Does a good story have to be accurate?

It's Friday dinner at a friend's house, and the Sagittarius is telling the story of last month's hike: 'Fifteen miles, straight up, and we ran out of water at the top.' One of the friends says she's been meaning to try that trail next month. The Virgo, who saved the route, says, 'Eleven point two, and you had half a bottle left.' In the car it comes out. 'You made me look like a liar.' 'I made it accurate.'

Sagittarius and Virgo spent that drive in two different conversations. The Virgo was answering the friend, who'd plan her day around whatever number she heard. The Sagittarius heard a verdict on the story, delivered in front of everyone, and nobody in the car mentioned her plan.

Fifteen miles or eleven point two

Skip who was right about the hike and ask one thing: is anyone about to act on the number? Until the friend spoke up, nobody was. After that, the distance and the water mattered a lot. Someone who packs for eleven miles with water to spare is in for a different afternoon from someone who packs for fifteen and expects to run dry, and she's the one who'd be out on the trail.

That gives the corrector a rule. Correct in private unless someone is about to rely on the figure. Then correct once, plainly, with the source, and say it to the person who needs it: 'If you go, it's eleven point two. Take a second bottle.' If the exaggeration is only the joke, leave it alone. And when a correction has already stung, start the repair with the embarrassment, before any figure: 'I should've told her, and left your story alone.' Calling the tall version 'the legend' helps too, so either of you can ask 'legend or real?' in front of friends.

The storyteller has a side of the deal too. In an argument, 'you always' and 'you never' are tall stories aimed at a person, and there the Virgo's precision is fair: if it happened twice, say twice.

Four two-bodied signs, two planets

Virgo and Sagittarius aren't opposites. They're a square, three signs apart, earth against fire, the element of appetite and nerve, and Virgo's opposite is Pisces. The square is on Ptolemy's disharmonious list, and this one sets Virgo, a night sign in his scheme, against Sagittarius, a day sign (Tetrabiblos I.13).

Both also belong to the kind Ptolemy calls bicorporeal, the signs that close a season, and he lists them as 'Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius, and Pisces' (I.11). Virgo closes summer and Sagittarius closes autumn. By the arrangement Ptolemy gives in I.11 and I.17, those four are the houses of Mercury and Jupiter, so this pair is Mercury's two-bodied sign meeting Jupiter's.

The triangles keep them apart. Jupiter governs the fire signs by night, with the Sun by day; Mercury governs the air signs by night; and neither has any share in the other's element. The same chapter sets 'Sagittarius to the winter solstice' (I.18), while Virgo leans toward the autumn equinox. Later, William Lilly's 1647 tables put each ruler in detriment in the other's sign, Mercury in Sagittarius (Skyscript's Mercury table) and Jupiter, in turn, in Virgo. Astrology reads Mercury as the planet that keeps count and Jupiter as the one that makes things bigger, and Virgo, where Ptolemy also exalts Mercury, gives the counting planet its strongest seat.

Mercury a square apart, daylight three hours apart

Their Mercury signs sit three signs apart, square to each other, in 40.0% of modeled pairs of dates in our 1950–2005 sample, the highest of the twelve pairings on the Virgo compatibility rankings. Mercury in Virgo with Mercury in Sagittarius makes up most of those, and the two Mercury signs never once matched in our sample. Their Venus signs also land a square apart more often than in any other Virgo pairing, if only just. By our calculation for latitude 36° north, Sagittarius takes 35.1 degrees of the sky's turn to rise, within about 1.3 of Virgo, yet New York gets 12 hours 23 minutes of daylight at 25° Virgo and 9 hours 16 minutes at 25° Sagittarius.

Why the attraction runs hotter than the talk

A Virgo likes how a Sagittarius will try a plan before every detail is settled, and ends up saying yes to trips they'd have ruled out alone. The pull the other way is attention: the Sagittarius likes the dry, exact wit and the sense that this person notices everything, including them.

In bed the square works in their favor. It's the one area of the five that scores well for them, and no single area scores higher in any of Virgo's five lowest-ranked matches. Play is the common ground, and pace is the difference. The Sagittarius is ready sooner; the Virgo relaxes through trust and small, repeated signs of attention, and once relaxed is often the one suggesting the next idea.

A Virgo's Venus is most often in Leo, Libra or Virgo, a Sagittarius's in Scorpio, Capricorn or Sagittarius, so the free-spirited lover of the stereotype is only one of the possibilities on that side. Our date figures read the Sun, Mercury, Venus and Mars at noon UTC on all 20,454 days from January 1, 1950, to December 31, 2005. Each pair figure matches a Virgo Sun date with a Sagittarius Sun date drawn independently, so it describes combinations of planets, not couples anyone observed.
