Gemini compatibility

Gemini compatibility: the twelve signs, by how each one handles change

Gemini is the zodiac sign of quick talk and changed minds, so its compatibility question comes down to who keeps up. Most astrology lists answer Libra and Aquarius first, then Aries and Leo. Virgo and Pisces, the two squares, are named most often as Gemini's worst match, and Sagittarius, straight across the wheel, splits opinion. Gemini season usually runs from May 21 to June 20, though some May 20 births are Gemini too.

For Gemini sign compatibility, the most telling thing is how each partner handles change, and the four kinds of sign Ptolemy described in the second century sort the twelve along that line. We also counted placements across every date from 1950 to 2005. Mercury, the planet that rules Gemini, sat in Gemini on just under half of those Gemini Sun dates. The rest had it in Taurus or Cancer, so plenty of Gemini birthdays come with a Mercury that, in astrology's terms, talks more like a neighbor sign.

Gemini, usually May 21 to June 20, matches best with Libra and Aquarius, the other air signs, then Aries and Leo. Virgo and Pisces square Gemini and top most worst-match lists. Sagittarius, the opposite sign, is a strong pull with plenty to argue about. Taurus, Cancer, Scorpio, Capricorn and another Gemini depend on the full charts.

Gemini in relationships at a glance
Dates Usually May 21 to June 20. In US Eastern time the Sun entered Gemini on May 20 in most years since 2008, so a May 20, May 21 or June 21 birthday needs the year and the birth time
Element and kind Air. Ptolemy called Gemini bicorporeal, a sign at the turn of a season; later astrologers call it mutable
Ruling planet Mercury, which also rules Virgo. Mercury never gets more than about one sign from the Sun
Dignities No planet is exalted or in its depression (the modern 'fall') in Gemini in Ptolemy's scheme. Later tradition, following William Lilly, puts Jupiter in detriment here
Usual best matches Libra and Aquarius, then Aries and Leo
Usual worst matches Virgo and Pisces, the two squares, with Sagittarius, the opposite sign, often added

Venus, Mercury and Mars on Gemini Sun dates

Our sample has one chart for every day from 1950 to 2005, cast at noon UTC. The Sun was in Gemini on 1,754 of those dates, about 31 a year, second only to Cancer.

Venus, the planet astrologers read for attraction, was in Gemini on 26.7% of sampled Gemini Sun dates. It was more often in Cancer (28.7%), almost as often in Taurus (25.8%), and less often in Aries (10.3%) or Leo (8.5%). Astrologers read Venus in Gemini as flirty and talkative, but that placement turned up more often on Cancer Sun dates (34.8%) and Taurus Sun dates (30.9%) than on Gemini Sun dates. A Gemini Sun doesn't guarantee a Gemini Venus, then, and a Taurus or Cancer Sun date was more likely to have one.

Mercury, Gemini's traditional ruler, was in Gemini on 48.5% of Gemini Sun dates, against 7.5% of all sampled dates. On the other 51.5% it was in Taurus (27.4%) or Cancer (24.1%), and nowhere else, because Mercury stays close to the Sun. Mars was in Gemini on 15.2% of Gemini Sun dates, about twice its 7.9% share of all dates, though its most frequent sign was Cancer, at 16.1%. Astrologers' reading of it is on the Mars in Gemini page.

Every calendar day counts once. These are shares of dates, not of people or couples, and a different span of birth years would move them a little. The table gives the full Venus and Mercury spreads and the six most common Mars signs, and the calculator above looks up two real birthdays.

How we calculated the date sample

We calculated Sun, Mercury, Venus and Mars positions at noon UTC on each of the 20,454 calendar dates from 1 January 1950 to 31 December 2005, using PyEphem 4.2.1. Each date has equal weight. Apparent geocentric positions are converted to ecliptic longitude for that date and divided into twelve 30° tropical signs.

We group the dates by Sun sign, then count the share with Mercury, Venus or Mars in each sign. Pair estimates multiply those rounded shares, assuming two independent date draws with no age-gap restriction. For example, 20.5% of Taurus Sun dates and 20.4% of Cancer Sun dates have Venus in the same sign as the Sun: 0.205 × 0.204 × 100 gives about 4.2% for both placements together.

Shares are rounded to one decimal place and may not sum to exactly 100%. For two people with the same Sun sign, reversed Venus combinations are combined. These are frequencies in a date sample, not birth-population statistics or observations of couples. They cannot tell us how people communicate or whether a relationship will last.

Gemini compatibility chart, by how each sign handles change

Ptolemy sorted the signs into four kinds by where they fall in the year (Tetrabiblos I.11). The equinoctial signs, Aries and Libra, and the solstitial signs, Cancer and Capricorn, open a season. The solid signs, Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius, follow them. Gemini is one of the four bicorporeal signs, with Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces. He gave the name because they sit between one season and the next and share in both, 'at end and beginning.' It had nothing to do with the Twins. Later astrologers call the three groups cardinal, fixed and mutable.

Ptolemy was sorting the calendar, not people. The character readings came later: modern astrology reads mutable signs as adaptable, fixed signs as persistent and cardinal signs as quick to start things. For Gemini, the practical question in each pairing is what the partner does after a plan changes. The rundown below takes all twelve in those groups, with each one's distance from Gemini and where published rankings tend to put it.

Gemini as a friend, a sibling and a coworker

In astrology's telling, Gemini makes friends fast and keeps up with them in bursts. That makes for easy company: the one who finds the new place to eat, has a fresh hobby every spring and can talk to anyone's parents. Libra and Aquarius make the friends Gemini can talk to for hours. Aries, a season starter, is the one who turns the talk into a plan.

The 'two-faced' label is mostly unfair. Changing your view after new information isn't lying, and astrologers pin the same charge on Gemini rising for the same reason. Going quiet is a different matter. That's a behavior, not a sign trait, and if a Gemini friend drops out of touch, a plain 'are we good?' tends to get a plain answer.

With siblings, and between a Gemini parent and a Gemini child, astrology expects lots of talk and short attention on both sides. At work, Gemini is read as the one who generates options, so a colleague from a fixed or cardinal sign who closes them makes a good partner. For emotional compatibility, astrologers also compare both people's Moon signs, which they read for how each one looks for comfort and reassurance.

Best match for Gemini: Libra and Aquarius, then the fire sextiles

Libra and Aquarius are the usual first picks. They're Gemini's fellow air signs, four signs away in each direction, the trine that Ptolemy counted as harmonious. In his scheme the air triangle belongs to Saturn by day and Mercury by night, and Venus, Libra's own ruler, gets no share in it (I.18).

Aries and Leo come next, two signs away in fire, the element astrology pairs with air. Neither is a mutable sign. Modern astrology reads cardinal Aries and fixed Leo as quicker to say what they want, and astrologers count that as a useful counterweight for a Gemini who keeps revising.

Sagittarius, across the wheel, splits the rankings. Some call it Gemini's other half and others put it in the bottom half. It's the classic pull of opposites, and of all twelve it's the sign whose Mercury is least likely to share Gemini's element, as the Mercury section below shows.

What the best matches share, in astrology's telling, is speed. Libra and Aquarius follow a change of topic without asking why. Aries and Leo follow a change of plan, provided someone finally picks one. A Gemini can enjoy a partner who disagrees. Trouble starts when a change of subject leaves something unsettled.

Why worst-match lists split between Virgo and Pisces

Ask which sign is worst for Gemini and the answers scatter. On October 9, 2026, Google's AI Overview for Gemini's worst match named Scorpio, Capricorn and Pisces. PureWow's ranking from July 30, 2024 put Pisces first of all twelve and Virgo ninth. Most other lists file Virgo and Pisces at or near the bottom.

The three signs that share Gemini's kind, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces, sit exactly three, six and three signs away. They're its two squares and its opposite. Ptolemy classed the square and the opposition as disharmonious (I.13). His reason, that they join masculine and feminine signs, fits Virgo and Pisces, which are feminine, but not Sagittarius, which is masculine like Gemini.

So the signs closest to Gemini in rhythm are the ones astrology's geometry files as hardest. Read for rhythm, Pisces looks like a natural match. Read for aspect, it looks like one of the worst. Virgo gets the same split, plus a shared ruler. In Ptolemy's scheme the four in-between signs are exactly the houses of Mercury (Gemini and Virgo) and of Jupiter (Sagittarius and Pisces) (I.17). And the two squares are where Mercury is strongest and weakest: exalted in Virgo, in its depression in Pisces (I.19).

None of that rules a match out. In modern astrology's reading, trouble between two mutable signs looks like a decision nobody makes. Both keep options open, both wait for one more piece of information, and the concert sells out. With Virgo or Pisces, decide early who makes the final call. With Sagittarius, agree what counts as settled. Scorpio and Capricorn, the other names on some worst lists, sit five signs away, a distance that isn't one of Ptolemy's four aspects.

Gemini marriage and soulmate picks, and one large test of them

For marriage, most guides say Libra or Aquarius, and marriage.com (updated May 14, 2026) adds Sagittarius. Soulmate lists start from the same air trines. 'Twin flame' is a modern idea with no place in classical astrology, so there's no traditional twin flame sign for Gemini to find.

Sun-sign marriage claims have had one large test. In 2020 Helgertz and Scott checked Sun-sign pairings against 66,063 marital unions in Swedish population registers and found no consistent pattern in who married whom or in who divorced. Their test stopped at Sun signs and didn't compare whole birth charts.

A Sun sign can't show whether one person's Mercury touches the other's Moon, Venus or Mercury. Comparing two whole charts, which astrologers call synastry, lists those contacts both ways, and the step-by-step synastry guide shows how to read them. Add birth times and it also places each person's Mercury in a house of the other's chart.

Mercury, Gemini's planet, across all twelve pairings

Mercury rules Gemini, and Ptolemy pictured it as the changeable planet, drying at some times and moistening at others, apt 'to change quickly from one to the other' because it moves so fast near the Sun (I.4). He was describing the planet, not Gemini people.

Mercury never strays far from the Sun, so on a Gemini Sun date it can only be in Taurus, Gemini or Cancer. That shapes every pairing. Among the twelve Gemini pairings in our model, Mercury signs share an element least often for Gemini and Sagittarius (10.7% of modeled pairs of dates) and most often for Gemini and Aquarius (37.9%). The three fire partners are the lowest three, and the three air partners, Aquarius, Libra and another Gemini, are the highest three. Right behind them come the two squares, Virgo at 30.8% and Pisces at 29.2%, one more reason the worst-match label sits on them so awkwardly.

Venus doesn't sort the matches like that. Venus signs share an element in 24.1% to 25.9% of modeled pairs of dates for every Gemini pairing, close to one in four each time. Across these pairings, then, the share with matching Mercury elements varies far more than the share with matching Venus elements. A free birth chart for each person shows where Mercury sat on the day you were born.

Mercury retrograde wasn't more common on Gemini birthdays, either. In our 1950–2005 date sample it was retrograde on 17.6% of Gemini Sun dates, against 19.2% of all sampled dates. In 2028 a whole Mercury retrograde loop, with its station dates, falls inside Gemini. Mercury stations retrograde at 16°19′ Gemini on May 21, 2028, one day after the Sun enters Gemini, and turns direct at 7°45′ Gemini on June 14.

The May 20 cusp, and the slow planets crossing Gemini

Gemini is usually listed as May 21 to June 20, and for most recent births the label holds. Across 1950 to 2040, the calculated Gemini ingress in US Eastern time falls on May 20 or May 21 every year. From 2008 to 2026 it fell on May 20 in every year except 2011, 2015, 2019 and 2023. In 2026 it crossed at 8:37 p.m. Eastern on May 20 (00:37 UT May 21).

So the real question is how much of May 20 was left. Call a date mostly Gemini when the Sun was in Gemini for more than half of that US Eastern day. By that test, every date from May 21 through June 20 was mostly Gemini in 63 of the 67 years from 1960 to 2026. In 42 of those years, those were the only mostly Gemini dates. The exceptions sit at the edges. May 20 was mostly Gemini in 2012, 2016, 2020 and 2024, and partly Gemini in most other recent years. May 21 was mostly Taurus in 1963, 1967, 1971 and 1975. June 21 was sometimes mostly Gemini too, most recently in 2015. A May 20 or June 21 birthday can be either sign, depending on the year and the time. For birthdays near June 21, see the Cancer pairing in the chart above.

A Taurus and Gemini cusp isn't a third sign; at any moment the Sun is in one or the other. To settle it, enter the birth date, time and place and read off the Sun sign. The time matters for the Moon as well. On 43.9% of sampled Gemini Sun dates the Moon changed sign during the UTC day, so a birth date alone often can't settle the Moon sign.

Astrologers also time change in a Gemini's life, relationships included, by the slow planets crossing the Sun's sign. They read Uranus as sudden change. It first entered Gemini on July 7, 2025, slipped back into Taurus that November, and re-entered Gemini on April 25, 2026 (00:52 UT April 26). It leaves for good on May 22, 2033; its previous stay ended in June 1949. By the end of 2028, Uranus will have passed exactly over the Sun's degree for 47.4% of sampled Gemini Sun dates, and over every Gemini degree by August 2032. Saturn, the planet astrologers read for commitment, enters Gemini on May 31, 2030, and meets Uranus at 28°01′ Gemini on June 28, 2032.

Gemini compatibility questions

Who is Gemini most compatible with?

Libra and Aquarius, the other air signs, are the usual first answer, with Aries and Leo next. That's the same for a Gemini woman, a Gemini man or anyone else, because Sun-sign astrology reads the sign the same way for every gender. For a closer read, compare both Mercury signs from real birth dates, since two Sun signs can't show whether those match.

Who should a Gemini avoid?

No sign is off limits. Virgo and Pisces, the two squares, are the signs lists name most often, then Sagittarius, Scorpio and Capricorn. Astrology reads the friction with Virgo and Pisces as two people who both like to keep options open, so with either one, agree early on who makes the final call.

What is Gemini's #1 soulmate?

There's no agreed soulmate sign in astrology. For a more personal reading, astrologers look past the Sun to Venus and the Moon, and two Gemini Suns can differ a lot there: across sampled Gemini Sun dates, Venus turned up in five different signs. You can find the Venus sign behind each birthday with the free lookup.

Do Gemini and the other mutable signs get along?

They understand each other's need to keep options open, and that's where it gets hard. Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces all square or oppose Gemini, so astrology expects lively talk and slow decisions. Decide who settles what before anything is urgent.
