The planet that struggles in Virgo

Mercury rules Virgo and is exalted there too, and no other planet gets both in one sign. Venus gets the opposite treatment. Ptolemy puts it at its weakest in Virgo, in its depression, and astrologers read Venus for attraction, pleasure and ease.

Venus doesn't vanish from a Virgo's life, though. It still governs Virgo's earth triangle by day, and it has a house, an exaltation or a triangle share in six of the other eleven signs. So each partner sign below is read by what Venus finds there.

Who brings Venus back: the Virgo sign compatibility chart

Venus is in its depression in Virgo, Ptolemy's term for a planet at its weakest (Tetrabiblos I.19). Taurus and Libra are its two houses (I.17), Pisces is its exaltation, and it helps govern two of the four triangles. Of the earth triangle through Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn, Ptolemy writes that 'the moon governs it by night and Venus by day' (I.18), and Venus takes the day share of the water triangle, Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces, as well. Leo, Gemini, Sagittarius, Aries and Aquarius give it none of these.

In Ptolemy's scheme, Venus has a house, an exaltation or a share of a triangle in every one of Virgo's seven highest-scoring matches and in none of its five lowest. Our score doesn't use Venus's dignities at all, so these are two separate reckonings drawing the same line.

Other sites agree less further down the list: on October 26, 2026, AskNebula rated Virgo and Aries 72% and jobcannon rated the same pair 47%. The four relationships behind our numbers are set out lower on this page.

• Taurus is one of Venus's two houses and also sits in Virgo's earth triangle, so Venus is strong there twice over. The signs are a trine apart. The friction is advice: a Virgo spots an improvement, and Taurus would like to be asked before anything gets fixed.
• Libra is Venus's other house, on the Sun's half of the zodiac, and it sits right next door to Virgo, outside Ptolemy's four aspects. It's the one day sign above the Venus line, a point ahead of Leo. Both say yes too readily, Libra to invitations and Virgo to favors, so somebody in a Virgo and Libra couple has to start saying no.
• Pisces is where Venus is exalted, and it shares the water triangle Venus governs by day. It's also Virgo's opposite sign, where Mercury, Virgo's own planet, is at its weakest. One partner rests by stopping and the other by finishing the job, which is the whole fight with a Pisces who means to do nothing all afternoon.
• Capricorn sits in Virgo's own earth triangle, governed by Venus by day, and trines Virgo from four signs away. It tops the chart, the only Excellent match. The question it raises is ambition. A Capricorn and a Virgo who don't both want more have to tell selling yourself short apart from being happy where you are.
• Cancer shares the water triangle Venus governs by day and sits a sextile from Virgo. It leads Virgo's chart for friendship and for communication. Both look after people, and the Cancer partner who remembers the refills too still needs the jobs said out loud. PureWow's 2024 ranking puts Cancer first, while Cosmopolitan's 2024 guide files it among Virgo's so-so matches.
• Scorpio shares that water triangle and sits the other sextile away. William Lilly's 1647 tables put Venus in detriment in Scorpio, but in Ptolemy's scheme Venus still governs the triangle by day. Both judge people slowly, and the snag comes when a Scorpio trusts a hunch about someone that the Virgo wants evidence for.
• Another Virgo puts Venus at its weakest on both sides, though Venus still governs the earth triangle the two of you share. The same sign isn't one of Ptolemy's four aspects. Two careful people can each be certain of a different right way, so two Virgos have to settle whose method wins without turning every chore into a referendum.
• Leo is the Sun's house, and Venus has no house, exaltation or triangle share there. It sits just before Virgo, a point below Libra and on the far side of the Venus line. The Leo tends to brag about the Virgo's work while the Virgo lists its flaws, the push and pull of a Leo who's prouder of you than you are.
• Gemini is Mercury's other house, so the two signs share a ruler, and they still sit square. Venus has no house, exaltation or triangle share in Gemini. Before a big decision one partner is ready and the other wants one more look, so Gemini and Virgo have to agree when the research stops.
• Sagittarius makes the other square to Virgo, and Venus has none of those roles there either. Lilly puts each sign's ruler in detriment in the other: Jupiter in Virgo, Mercury in Sagittarius. One partner tells the story bigger and the other checks the mileage, which is how a Sagittarius with a tall tale ends up quiet in the car home.
• Aries sits five signs from Virgo, and Venus has no house, exaltation or triangle there (Lilly adds its detriment). It ties Aquarius for last place on the chart. When something looks wrong halfway through a job, an Aries who'd rather push through meets a Virgo who wants to stop and check.
• Aquarius, five signs the other way, shares last place with Aries, and Venus has none of those roles there either. Both signs like to be useful, and they disagree about how. The Virgo helps the person in front of them while an Aquarius who'd rather fix the whole system asks for the same evening.

Best match for a Virgo: Capricorn and Taurus, then Cancer and Scorpio

Capricorn is Virgo's best match on our chart, and Taurus is one point behind. They're Virgo's fellow earth signs, each a trine away. Cancer and Scorpio, the water signs a sextile away, come next. Trines and sextiles are the aspects Ptolemy calls harmonious, on the grounds that they link signs of one kind (I.13). Capricorn, Taurus, Cancer and Scorpio are night signs, as Virgo is, so the reason holds for every one of them. They're also four of the six signs where Venus governs a triangle by day.

By area, Taurus and Capricorn tie for love, and Taurus has the highest marriage score Virgo gets with anyone, Capricorn just behind. Cancer leads for friendship and for communication. For sex the top spot goes to Pisces, from the middle of the chart. A Virgo man, a Virgo woman or anyone else with a Virgo Sun reads from this same list.

Between the two earth signs, the difference is who sets the plan. Capricorn, a cardinal sign, likes to start one; Taurus, a fixed sign, likes to keep one once it's set. A Virgo adjusts to either. Cancer and Scorpio want feeling first, so a Virgo's fixed tap or booked appointment lands better with a sentence attached about why.

Another Virgo comes fifth. Two Virgos make strong friends and talk easily, and their marriage score is the lowest of their five areas, still good.

The opposite sign and the two next door: Pisces, Libra and Leo

Pisces is sixth on the Virgo chart and first for sex. It's the opposite sign, the one people call Virgo's sister sign, and the trade between them is plain in Ptolemy: Venus is exalted in Pisces and weakest in Virgo, and Mercury goes the other way round.

Then the score drops sharply to Libra and Leo, the two signs on either side of Virgo, a point apart. Neither makes one of Ptolemy's four aspects with Virgo, both are day signs, and both get along better as friends than as lovers on our chart. What splits them is Venus. Libra is Venus's house, so it lands just above the line; Leo belongs to the Sun, and Venus has no house, exaltation or triangle share there.

They share Virgo's edges as well. A birthday at either end of the season can fall on either side of the line depending on the year and the hour, and a Big 3 reading from birth time and place confirms the Sun sign along with the Moon and rising signs.

Virgo's worst match is a tie: Aries and Aquarius

Aries and Aquarius share last place on the Virgo chart, five signs away on either side. Neither shares Virgo's element or modality, both are day signs, and Venus has no house, exaltation or triangle share in either. Sagittarius comes just above them, then Gemini.

Virgo squares Gemini and Sagittarius, the signs three places off on each side. Each is a day sign facing a night sign, exactly the mismatch Ptolemy gives as the reason a square is disharmonious. Gemini also shares Mercury with Virgo, and that's the reason it finishes above Sagittarius on our chart.

Leo, Libra, Aries and Aquarius all sit one or five signs from Virgo, the distances Ptolemy's I.16 calls disjunct. Leo and Aquarius are disjunct on every reading. Libra and Aries can be read two ways. By the rule Ptolemy gives in I.14 for signs equally far from an equinox, counted from the equinox point, Libra takes the same time to rise as Virgo by our calculation; the Loeb editor pairs Virgo with Scorpio instead.

Aries is the stranger case. For signs equally far from a solstice, Ptolemy says the days match and each of the pair 'rises from the same part of the horizon and sets in the same part' (I.15). By our calculation for New York, the Sun at 5° Virgo (August 28, 2026) gives 13 hours 15 minutes of daylight and the Sun at 25° Aries (April 14, 2026) gives 13 hours 16 minutes, the equal-days pairing Ptolemy describes. The Loeb editor pairs Virgo with Taurus there.

So who should a Virgo steer clear of? Aries and Aquarius take the most work, then Sagittarius and Gemini. With Aries, agree in advance when a job gets a second look and when it simply gets finished. With Aquarius, settle whose kind of help comes first before the calendar fills. With Gemini, set a deadline for the decision, and with Sagittarius, correct a detail only when someone is about to act on it.

Virgo's best marriage match, and the soulmate lists

Taurus, on our marriage scores, with Capricorn close behind, then Scorpio and Cancer. Sagittarius has the lowest marriage score on the Virgo chart, with Aries next to it. marriage.com's Virgo guide (updated June 18, 2026) picks Taurus, Capricorn, Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces, and Bustle's soulmate list (updated July 26, 2024) names Taurus, Cancer and Capricorn. mindbodygreen goes for Pisces, the opposite sign, as the soulmate match. On our love scores Taurus and Capricorn share the top. Helgertz and Scott compared Sun signs with Swedish marriage and divorce registers from 1968 to 2001 and found the pairings didn't line up consistently with who married whom or which marriages ended (their 2020 paper).

With two full charts you can go past the Sun. Set each person's Venus against the other's Venus and Mars: astrologers read those contacts for whether two ways of showing affection meet or miss. A synastry comparison of both charts sets those contacts out for each partner, and with birth times it shows which house of the other person's chart each Venus falls in.

A Virgo's best friend, and the favors that come back

Most Virgo friendships run on favors: the proofread résumé, the cheaper flight found at midnight, the allergy remembered at a dinner party. The friendships worth keeping are the ones where the favors come back.

Cancer tops the Virgo chart for friendship, with Scorpio and Capricorn level just behind and Taurus next. A Cancer friend tends to notice when the Virgo is worn out before the Virgo admits it. Sagittarius scores lowest as a friend, with Aries and Aquarius tied just above; with those three, plans tend to go better when somebody else does the organizing.

In a family the Virgo is often the one who books the reunion and keeps the shared calendar honest. A Virgo parent who spots a mistake in the homework can ask 'want a hint?' and wait for the answer. Between parent and child, astrologers lean on how the two Moon signs pair up as much as on the Sun. At work, agree a review deadline, so the Virgo has time to catch errors and everyone else knows when the work is done.

Venus, Mercury and Mars on Virgo Sun dates

The shares in this section come from one chart a day, cast for noon UTC, from January 1, 1950 to December 31, 2005. That's 20,454 days, and the Sun was in Virgo on 1,731 of them. Each date counts once, so these are shares of dates, never of people or couples.

Venus never strays far from the Sun, so on a Virgo birthday it can only be in one of five signs, Cancer through Scorpio. It was in Libra, its own house, on 25.8% of sampled Virgo Sun dates, about as often as in Virgo, its depression, and it was in Leo more often than either. Pisces is out of reach, so a Virgo is never born with Venus exalted. A separate search of Venus's stations from 1950 to 2040 puts its last retrograde in Virgo on July 25, 2015, when it stationed under 1° into the sign; none of its retrogrades through 2040 reaches Virgo. Mercury sits closer still, in Leo, Virgo or Libra. Mercury was retrograde on 21.1% of Virgo Sun dates in our 1950–2005 sample, 366 of 1,731, the highest share of the twelve signs, though the twelve differ by less than four points. And on 39.4% of Virgo Sun dates in our sample, neither Mercury nor Venus was in Virgo, so neither was in an earth sign at all. On those birthdays the planets astrologers read for talk and attraction both sit outside Virgo's element.

Every Virgo Sun date from 1962 to 1968 had both Uranus and Pluto in Virgo, 216 dates in our sample, and the only years in it when a Virgo birthday had two of the outer planets in Virgo.
