Cancer starts at the June solstice and is the one sign ruled by the Moon. It's cardinal water, and when US births from 2000 to 2014 are grouped by the usual date ranges, Cancer is the largest group.
What type of person is a Cancer?
Astrology reads Cancer as protective and private, with feelings close to the surface and a long memory. The Moon rules the sign, so mood matters. So does home, in whatever form you've built it.
Cancer is also a cardinal sign, and cardinal signs start things. A Cancer usually starts by looking after people: organizing the family dinner, or speaking up for a friend who's being treated badly. The difficult side is that protectiveness can tip into managing other people's choices, and a hurt can harden into a grudge. The symbol is the Crab, and the sideways approach fits: a Cancer often comes at a conflict indirectly rather than head-on. At work the same instinct makes you the one who looks after the team and notices who's struggling.
In love, Cancer takes its time. You test people quietly before you let them in, and once they're in, you remember their birthdays and their slights with the same accuracy.

The most common Sun sign in US birth records
Group every US birth from 2000 to 2014 by the usual date ranges and Cancer comes out on top. Social Security Administration data (published by FiveThirtyEight) puts 5,595,033 of 62,187,024 births on calendar dates between June 21 and July 22. That's 9.00%, just ahead of Virgo (8.96%) and Leo (8.88%).
Part of the lead is length. June 21 to July 22 is 32 days, the longest of the 12 usual date ranges. Cancer averaged 11,656 births a day, 2.7% above the daily average for the whole dataset, though Virgo and Leo were busier still per day.
July 4 stands out. It averaged 8,815 births, the fewest of any date in Cancer, and about 25% fewer than the same weekday a week or two either side.
Cancer begins at the June solstice
Cancer's first moment is the June solstice, when the Sun reaches its farthest point north. Ptolemy called Cancer a solstitial sign because the Sun "turns" there. In Eastern time the solstice lands on June 20 or June 21, so the June 21 start on most lists is right only in some years.
A June 20, 2028 birth after 4:02 p.m. Eastern is a Cancer, and a July 22, 2028 birth after 2:54 a.m. Eastern is already a Leo, though most lists give all of July 22 to Cancer.
The Sun also stays in Cancer longer than in any other sign: 31 days, 10 hours and 49 minutes in 2026. Earth is farthest from the Sun in early July, and the Sun's apparent motion is slowest then. We computed these instants on NASA JPL's DE440s ephemeris and checked each against JPL Horizons, within 2 seconds.

Three eclipses in Cancer in 2028
All three of these 2028 eclipses are in NASA's eclipse catalog, and we worked out the sign and degree of each on JPL DE440s. The times below are the exact new or full moon.
The July eclipse falls at 29° Cancer, about four hours before the Sun moves into Leo at 2:54 a.m. EDT on July 22. NASA's catalog lists it on July 22, the date in Universal Time. On the US East Coast it's still the evening of July 21.

Why the Moon sign matters so much for a Cancer
The Moon is Cancer's ruler, so astrologers give a Cancer Sun's Moon sign extra weight. The Moon changes sign every two to three days. Two Cancers born a week apart can have their Moons three signs apart, and an astrologer would read them quite differently.
