Cancer and Capricorn compatibility: sister signs, and what happens when work comes home
Cancer and Capricorn compatibility is the classic case of opposites that fit. The signs face each other across the zodiac, and astrologers call them sister signs: Cancer looks after the home and the people in it, Capricorn looks after the plan and the future. Astrology rates the pair highly for loyalty, long-term potential and physical chemistry.
The friction is rarely about values. Both signs want security. It's about where security comes from on a given evening: being home together, or getting the work done that pays for the home. The trouble starts when work wins every time.
Cancer and Capricorn are a strong, steady match in astrology: opposite sister signs, both cardinal, both driven by security. Cancer builds it through home and closeness, Capricorn through work and planning. They do well when they settle in advance how work time and home time get shared, so neither keeps losing.

Some signs couldn't be confirmed
A date alone doesn't tell us the birth time or time zone, so we allow extra room around each position. Here that allowance covers two signs, which doesn't mean the planet changed signs that day. Both candidates are shown and this pair is left uninterpreted. The birth chart calculator opens empty, so you can enter either person's details.
Check the placement with birth time and placeThis tool compares Sun, Mercury, Venus and Mars signs. It doesn't calculate Moon compatibility or exact aspects, and rising sign and houses need a birth time and place.

What sister signs means here
'Sister signs' is the modern name for opposite signs. Capricorn sits six signs from Cancer, directly across the wheel, so they share a modality and a sign polarity while pointing in opposite directions. Ptolemy names them as the two solstitial signs (Tetrabiblos I.11): the Sun turns at the start of each, in midsummer and midwinter for the northern hemisphere.
The rulers mirror each other too. The Moon rules Cancer, and Ptolemy places Saturn's signs directly opposite the signs of the Sun and Moon (I.17). Their exaltations swap places: Jupiter is exalted in Cancer and at its weakest in Capricorn, while Mars is exalted in Capricorn and at its weakest in Cancer (I.19).
There's a softer link as well. Ptolemy gives the Moon a share in ruling the earth triplicity by night (I.18), so Cancer's own planet has a foothold in Capricorn's element. Ptolemy classes oppositions as disharmonious, but modern astrologers mostly read this one as two halves of one job: home and the world outside it. That split is why Cancer's traditional and modern best matches disagree about Capricorn.
Work comes home: the deadline on a family night
Here's the scene. Thursday is dinner with one partner's parents, booked weeks ago. On Wednesday, a project at work moves its deadline to Friday morning. One of you sees an obvious call: skip dinner, finish the work, apologise properly. The other sees a pattern: work always wins, and the people at home are expected to understand.
Both have a point, which is why it keeps happening. Decide the rules before the next deadline, not during it. Which evenings are fixed whatever happens? How much warning counts as fair? Who calls the family to explain? Either of you can be the one with the deadline, so write rules you'd accept from both sides.
And look at what each of you is protecting. Overtime can be a way of looking after the household, just as dinner with family is. Saying 'I'm doing this for us' out loud, and hearing 'I need you here', changes the argument from duty against feelings to two people guarding the same thing.
When one wants comfort and the other offers a fix
The classic argument goes like this. Cancer has a bad day and wants to talk about how it felt. Capricorn listens for a minute and then offers a plan: email your manager, update your CV, get some sleep. Cancer hears 'stop feeling this'. Capricorn hears 'your help isn't wanted'. Neither feels understood, and both meant well.
Ask first which one is wanted tonight: listening or solutions. It sounds too simple, and it works because it moves the guesswork out of the moment. Capricorn's care often looks like a solved problem, and Cancer's often looks like a long conversation over food. Both count.
In bed: slow trust, then real warmth
Astrology rates this pair highly for physical chemistry, and the reason given is the polarity itself. Cancer brings affection into the open. Capricorn takes longer, and responds to steady, reliable attention more than to grand gestures. Neither sign is usually quick to open up, so things tend to build slowly and then run deep.
The exaltation swap gives the traditional detail: Mars, the planet of drive, is strong in Capricorn and weak in Cancer. That suggests a contrast between a steady, determined approach and one that runs on mood and feeling. Mars in Capricorn is the exalted, steady version and the fallen Mars of Cancer the mood-led one, but check the actual placements. A Sun sign doesn't tell you where anyone's Mars is.
Mercury: where this pair matches least often
Mercury adds a different contrast. Across all twelve Cancer pairings, Cancer and Capricorn dates have the second-lowest share of Mercury signs in the same element: 12.2% of modeled pairs, just above Cancer and Virgo at 11.8%. The most common Mercury combination is Cancer with Capricorn, at 26.6% of modeled date pairs, which repeats the opposition. The next two, Leo with Capricorn (18.8%) and Cancer with Sagittarius (12.8%), are both five signs apart.
Venus looks friendlier. The most common Venus combination is Gemini for the Cancer date with Aquarius for the Capricorn date, at 11.9%: an air trine, so the commonest Venus pairing for these opposite Suns is a harmonious one in a third element. Next comes Leo with Aquarius at 9.4%, another opposition. Venus signs share an element in 26.4% of modeled pairs, near the top of the narrow Cancer range.
These figures count date combinations, not couples. Check both birth dates in the Cancer and Capricorn calculator before deciding which version of the pair you are.

Cancer and Capricorn as friends
This friendship often starts slowly. Both signs are reserved with new people, and they may know each other for a long time through work or family before it becomes a real friendship. When it does, it's dependable: the friend who helps you move, remembers your mother's surgery and turns up on time.
The risk is that every meeting has a job attached. If you only see each other at work events or family occasions, plan something with no task in it. A walk, a meal, an afternoon with no agenda.
Marriage and the long game
Most astrologers give this pair good odds in marriage, because both signs think in years and both take commitment seriously. A shared household plays to their strengths: one tends the people and the rituals, the other the budget and the plan. What wears it down is a slow drift into separate lives, one centred on home and one on work, with each partner quietly feeling like the one who gives more.
Have a yearly money talk with both lists side by side: the renovation, the holiday with family, the emergency fund, the course that might lead to a promotion. Rank them together. Then check in on the work and home balance regularly rather than waiting for a fight. The Moon matters here too, since Cancer is the Moon's own sign, and the Moon sign compatibility guide works through a Cancer Moon with a Capricorn Moon. Each person's Moon, Venus and rising sign depend on birth date, time and place, and the free chart calculator shows all three.
One opposition or two?
Consider a hypothetical couple with the commonest Venus match in the model, where the Cancer Sun has Venus in Gemini and the Capricorn Sun has Venus in Aquarius. Those Venus signs form an air trine, so the affection side of the reading is light and easy: shared jokes, ideas, a sociable streak that softens the opposition between the Suns.
Now give the Cancer person Venus in Leo. Together with the Capricorn person's Venus in Aquarius, that combination accounts for 9.4% of modeled date pairs. Leo and Aquarius are opposite signs, so the pair now has two oppositions, Sun and Venus. One wants a clear show of devotion; the other, with an Aquarius Venus, wants room to breathe.

Cancer and Capricorn questions
Are Cancer and Capricorn sister signs?
Yes. 'Sister signs' is the modern term for opposite signs, and Cancer and Capricorn sit exactly six signs apart. They share the cardinal modality and are the two solstice signs, which is why astrologers describe them as two halves of one axis: home and family on one side, work and public life on the other.
Why does Capricorn love Cancer?
In astrology, Capricorn spends a lot of energy holding things together, and Cancer offers a place where it can stop. The warmth Capricorn often keeps private comes out more easily with someone who leads with feeling. The attraction of opposites is strongest when each partner values what the other does best.
Can a Cancer and Capricorn relationship last?
Astrologers usually say yes, and rank it among the more durable pairings, because both signs value commitment and think long term. The thing to watch is drift: one partner living for home, the other for work. Couples who set rules for shared time and check in on the balance tend to do well.
