Aquarius traits and personality

Aquarius is sociable but private about feelings. Air signs are tied to thought and conversation, and Aquarius is also fixed, which astrologers connect with persistence. Put together, you get someone who will happily debate you for an hour and then not move an inch.

The strength is original thinking. An Aquarius is often the one in a group who asks why the rule exists at all, and who sketches a better way to do it. On a team, they tend to care more about whether the system is fair than about who gets credit.

The harder side shows up one on one. An Aquarius may question an unfair rule with real passion and then struggle to comfort a friend who's upset, analyzing the disagreement when the other person wants reassurance. That's the detachment people complain about.

Independence matters a lot here. In a relationship, that can mean wanting time alone without having to defend it. Aquarius is often described as wanting a friend at the center of a romance, and your Venus sign describes the rest of how you approach affection.

Aquarius dates and birthdays

Most lists run Aquarius from January 20 to February 18 in the tropical zodiac Western astrology uses. The table shows when the Sun actually arrives, computed on NASA's DE440s ephemeris and checked against JPL Horizons. Notice 2026: the Sun entered Aquarius on the evening of January 19, US Eastern time.

In US Eastern time the Sun has entered Pisces on February 18 every year since 2017, and our run shows the same through 2030. So a February 18 birthday is Aquarius only until that moment. Anyone born on a boundary date needs the birth year and time to be sure.

From 2000 to 2014, 8.04% of US births fell in the Aquarius range (5,001,409 of 62,187,024), in the Social Security Administration counts published by FiveThirtyEight. The busiest Aquarius birthday was February 14, at an average of 11,999 births, about 6% above the yearly daily average of 11,350.

Saturn or Uranus: the two rulers of Aquarius

In Ptolemy's Tetrabiblos, written in the second century, Saturn rules both Capricorn and Aquarius, the two signs opposite the houses of the Sun and Moon (Book I, chapter 17). That's the Saturn side of Aquarius: loyalty to a principle and a stubborn streak.

Uranus wasn't known until William Herschel spotted it in 1781. Modern astrologers later gave it Aquarius, and astrologers who use both rulers tie Saturn to commitment to principles and Uranus to resistance to convention. Read together, they describe an argument that goes on inside one person.

Aries, where Saturn sits from February 13, 2026 until April 12, 2028, forms a sextile with Aquarius. Gemini, where Uranus sits from April 25, 2026 until it first reaches Cancer on August 3, 2032, forms a trine. Both are angles astrologers count as harmonious.

Eclipses and Pluto in Aquarius

From 2026 to 2028, three solar eclipses fall in Aquarius, and all three are annular. Dates and types come from NASA's solar and lunar eclipse catalogs; the degrees are the Sun and Moon positions we computed on JPL data.

Astrologers pay close attention to eclipses near the natal Sun. The February 2026 eclipse sat near the Sun of Aquarians born in the last days of the sign, while the January 2028 eclipse lands near the Sun of those born around January 26. The true North Node, which marks where eclipses can happen, entered Aquarius on July 26, 2026 and stays until March 25, 2028.

Pluto is the slow layer under all of this. It first touched Aquarius on March 23, 2023, moved back into Capricorn twice, and settled in on November 19, 2024. It reaches Pisces on March 8, 2043, dips back once more, and leaves for good on January 19, 2044. Pluto crosses all 30 degrees of the sign in that time, and astrologers tie its pass over the natal Sun to changes in identity and personal power.
