Libra has a reputation for diplomacy, and it comes with a catch: keeping the peace can mean leaving a disagreement unresolved. Its season also starts at the exact minute of the September equinox.
What a Libra is like
Libra is a cardinal air sign. Cardinal signs open a season, and air signs work through ideas and conversation. A Libra often raises the question or starts the introductions, and talking a choice through with someone else helps them work out what they think.
Libra is the only sign whose symbol is an object, the scales, and the indecision Libras get teased about comes partly from weighing competing needs at once. Sometimes that's useful. Sometimes asking for one more opinion just postpones the choice. Conflict is the harder part: many Libras will smooth over a problem to keep the peace, then resent having done it.
Venus, Libra's ruler, is the planet astrologers associate with taste, which is where the sign's eye for proportion comes from. A Libra might spend an hour adjusting a room before guests arrive when everyone else thinks it looks fine. In company that attention often turns to who feels welcome and who keeps getting talked over.

Libra season starts at the equinox
The Sun enters Libra when it reaches 180° of ecliptic longitude, which is how astronomers define the September equinox. So Libra's start times match the US Naval Observatory's equinox table to the minute. We computed them on NASA's DE440s ephemeris and checked each against JPL Horizons too.
The usual September 23 to October 22 dates don't settle every birthday near the edges. A September 22 birth is Libra after 8:05 p.m. Eastern in 2026 and after 7:45 a.m. in 2028. An October 23 birth is still Libra until 5:38 a.m. in 2026 and until 11:33 a.m. in 2027, and in 2028 Scorpio season begins at 5:13 p.m. on October 22.
In Social Security Administration counts for 2000 to 2014 (via FiveThirtyEight), 8.41% of US births fell between September 23 and October 22, against 8.21% of the days. Libra's first days sit on the tail of the late-September peak: September 26 was the ninth busiest birthday of the year.

Venus rules Libra, and Saturn is exalted there
Ptolemy's Tetrabiblos gives Libra to Venus, alongside Taurus. It also makes Libra the exaltation of Saturn, the sign where Saturn is strongest, and the depression of the Sun, where the Sun is weakest (Book I, chapters 17 and 19). His reason for the Sun is seasonal: at Libra it passes into the southern half of the sky, and in the Northern Hemisphere the days grow shorter than the nights.
Saturn's place here helps explain a side of Libra the diplomacy hides. Libras can be stubborn about fairness, and keeping everyone happy gets hard once someone is being treated badly.
Libra in love and partnership
Libra tends to want a partner who's also a good companion to talk with, and it can put a lot of effort into keeping a relationship pleasant. The traditional matches are the other air signs, Gemini and Aquarius, plus Leo and Sagittarius, the fire signs a sextile away. Aries is the opposite sign, and astrologers often describe that pairing as independent action pulling against the habit of consulting first.
Since Venus rules Libra, a Libra's own Venus sign carries extra weight in a relationship reading. With the Sun in Libra, Venus can sit anywhere from Leo to Sagittarius.
The rising sign can explain why some Libras don't fit the easy-charmer stereotype. A Libra with Scorpio or Capricorn rising can take longer to show their warmth.
Saturn, Jupiter and a long gap without eclipses
Saturn spends February 13, 2026 to April 12, 2028 in Aries, the sign opposite Libra, so over those two years it opposes each degree of the Libra Sun in turn. The last eclipse in Libra was the annular solar eclipse of October 2, 2024, at 10°04' Libra. Taking the eclipse dates in NASA's catalogs and computing each one's sign, the next eclipse in Libra is the total lunar eclipse of April 14, 2033, with the Moon at 25°09' Libra. That leaves more than eight years with none in the sign.
