Libra and Scorpio compatibility: next-door signs and a jealousy that can run either way
Every Friday the Scorpio has lunch with Theo from work. Same taco place, the same running joke about the office printer, a playlist they've both been adding to since spring. Theo is usually the first to hear when the Scorpio's week has gone badly. The Libra partner has more friends than free evenings and is warm with all of them, and it's the Libra who minds. When it finally comes up, the Scorpio is baffled: 'It's just lunch.' The Libra can't say exactly what the problem is, either.
Most lists would cast this the other way round, with Scorpio as the jealous partner and Libra as the charmer who sets it off. The placements behind Scorpio and Libra let the roles run either way. In our 1950–2005 date sample, Venus was in Scorpio more often on Libra Sun dates than on any other sign's, Scorpio's own included, and Mars turned up in Libra on Scorpio Sun dates more often than in any other sign. Whoever minds, start with what you miss: their time, their attention or being the one they confide in.
Libra and Scorpio compatibility is a next-door match in astrology: air beside water, two neighbors Ptolemy gives no aspect. The pull is Libra's ease meeting Scorpio's focus, and jealousy, felt by either partner, is the usual sticking point. They do best when each names what they're jealous of (attention, time or a confidant) and asks for it.

A date alone doesn't tell us the birth time or time zone, so we allow extra room around each position. Here that allowance covers two signs, which doesn't mean the planet changed signs that day. Both candidates are shown and this pair is left uninterpreted. The birth chart calculator opens empty, so you can enter either person's details.

Venus in Scorpio, Mars in Libra
Libra, the sign Venus rules, sits next to Scorpio, whose ruler is Mars in traditional astrology (modern astrologers add Pluto; the case for each ruler is on the Scorpio page). In our 1950–2005 date sample, each sign's ruler turned up most often in the other's sign. Venus was in Scorpio on 34.5% of sampled Libra Sun dates, more often than on any other Sun sign's dates, Scorpio's own 32.0% included. Mars was in Libra on 16.5% of sampled Scorpio Sun dates, more than in any other sign.
Put two dates together and the Scorpio Venus doubles up. Both Venus signs are in Scorpio in 11.0% of modeled pairs of Libra and Scorpio dates, the highest of the twelve Scorpio pairings and higher than for two Scorpio dates (10.2%). No other Venus pairing is as common for these two signs.
Astrology reads a Scorpio Venus as love that wants depth, privacy and one person's full attention. A Libra Mars is described as drive that goes into keeping the peace, slow to start a fight and good at the polite version of one. So a Libra with Venus in Scorpio can easily be the one who wants the Scorpio's undivided attention, and a Scorpio with Mars in Libra can be the one who swallows a complaint to keep the evening pleasant. William Lilly's 1647 tables count both placements as detriments, each planet in the sign opposite one of its own.

Mars can occupy any sign with either Sun sign. The most frequent Mars signs on sampled Libra dates are Virgo (17.1%), Libra (15.1%), Sagittarius (11.8%), Leo (11.8%), and on Scorpio dates Libra (16.5%), Virgo (13.7%), Scorpio (12.7%), Capricorn (11.5%).
Planet positions come from one noon-UTC reading of the Sun, Mercury, Venus and Mars on all 20,454 days from January 1, 1950, to December 31, 2005, every day weighted the same. Pair figures combine a Libra Sun date and a Scorpio Sun date picked independently, so they describe how often combinations of positions occur on dates, not how couples behave or whether they last.
Once the Scorpion's Claws
Libra hasn't always been the Scales. F. E. Robbins, who translated Ptolemy's Tetrabiblos for the Loeb Classical Library, notes that 'Claws of the Scorpion' was the earlier name of Libra, and that Libra 'came into general use in the first century before Christ. Ptolemy uses both names' (Robbins' note on I.9). So the sign next door once carried the Scorpion's own name.
Next door isn't opposite, though the two often get mixed up. Scorpio's opposite is Taurus, six signs on. Libra and Scorpio share none of Ptolemy's four aspects and none of the other links he describes between signs, so in his terms they're disjunct (I.16). Modern astrologers call the 30° gap a semi-sextile.
Ptolemy also explains why these two rulers sit side by side. In his chapter on the planets' houses he works inward from Saturn, the outermost planet, giving each a pair of signs. Mars gets Scorpio and Aries, and Venus, 'which is temperate and beneath Mars', gets the next two, Libra and Taurus (I.17).
Venus also gets a share, by day, in governing Scorpio's water triangle, alongside Mars and the Moon. Mars gets no share in Libra's own triangle, Gemini, Libra and Aquarius, which goes to Saturn by day and Mercury by night (I.18). So in that scheme the shared rulership runs one way: Libra's planet has a foothold in Scorpio's element, and Scorpio's planet has none in Libra's. It doesn't tell you which of the two will find the relationship easier.
What exactly are you jealous of?
The Libra in the Friday story doesn't object to tacos, or even to Theo. What stings is that Theo hears about the bad week first. That's jealousy of a confidant. It's different from jealousy of attention, minding how a partner lights up for a room, and from jealousy of time, minding where the free evenings go. Each needs a different fix, so work out which kind it is before asking for anything.
A Libra who minds a confidant usually doesn't want the lunch cancelled. They want to hear about the bad week too, before Theo or at least the same day. A Scorpio who minds the Libra's warmth toward everyone isn't usually asking for less charm. They want to know where they stand while the Libra's attention is spread across a room: a look, a hand on the back, a joke only the two of them get. 'What would help me feel included?' gets further than 'Why do you need him?'
Make the third person known instead of watching them from a distance. If Theo matters to the Scorpio, suggest lunch with Theo. And the Scorpio can bring the bad week home first, with Theo second to hear. Your partner may agree to all of that and still want the friendship to stay as it is, so be clear about which change you're asking for: more of their time, or less of someone else's.
None of this assumes who minds. Often it is the Scorpio, and in astrology Scorpio's water wants a closeness that belongs to two people. Check before you hand out the role.
Why the pull is strong, and the Venus signs in bed
The attraction tends to hit early. In astrology, a Libra is won over by the way a Scorpio gives one person complete attention, stays loyal once they've chosen and holds the same opinion in private as in a crowd. For a sign that spends so much effort keeping everyone comfortable, being chosen that wholeheartedly is a relief. A Scorpio, in turn, may love how easily a Libra starts a conversation, introduces them around or talks a tense room down. With a Libra beside them, a crowded evening feels like less work.
That pull carries into bed, and the Venus signs give it a shape. If you both have Venus in Scorpio, the commonest pairing for these dates, astrology puts privacy and trust at the center of the reading. Check the placements first, because most pairs don't have it.
Venus in Libra, its own sign, reads differently. It's found on 19.9% of sampled Libra Sun dates, and astrologers describe a Libra Venus that values courtesy as wanting love to come with grace and visible effort. Paired with a Scorpio Venus, the Libra may want the evening to feel easy while the Scorpio wants it to feel close. Does one of you want flirting and a planned date, while the other wants a quiet night and a long talk? Ask before assuming the same evening suits you both.
Mars adds a twist. A Scorpio with Mars in Libra may want things talked through more than the sign's reputation suggests, and may hold back sooner than spoil the mood. Say plainly what you'd like and what you'd rather not, before holding back turns into resentment.
Pace, hurt and smoothing things over
Pace comes up early. Libra, the sign most at home in a partnership, is described as ready to say 'we' soon: meet my friends, let's plan the summer. Scorpio, fixed water, comes across as slow to trust and all in once it does. A Libra can mistake that slowness for second thoughts, and a Scorpio can suspect the Libra's quick warmth is handed out to everyone. Say where each of you is, and how long you'd like before the next step.
Plenty of their fights have no third person in them. Say the Scorpio mentions something that matters to them and the Libra, reaching for a lighter mood, answers with a joke. Scorpio, as astrologers tell it, takes a hurt inward first, so the Scorpio goes quiet, sometimes for a day. Libra, the sign of the Scales, is said to want the balance back fast, so the Libra stays cheerful and acts as if nothing happened. To the Scorpio that looks like not caring. To the Libra the silence looks like a punishment with no end date.
The repair starts with naming what was missing. 'I wanted you to stay with that for a minute before the joke' tells the Libra exactly what the Scorpio needed, which a day of silence never does. The Libra's part is to skip the cheerful version and ask what landed badly. And check who's doing which, since a Scorpio with Mars in Libra may be the one smoothing things over.
The friend who knows everyone and the friend who knows three people well
Several compatibility guides rate Libra and Scorpio higher as friends than as a couple, partly because jealousy has less riding on it. The Libra friend enjoys introducing people and may assume an invitation includes the whole group. The Scorpio friend would often rather see the Libra alone, so check before bringing extra people along. Each can feel slighted by the other's way of doing friendship: the Scorpio feeling like one of fifty, the Libra feeling shut out of a very small circle.
One habit trips them up. The overbooked Libra cancels, and the Scorpio reads the cancellation as a ranking. A specific new date in the same message, 'Can't do Thursday. Sunday morning?', does more than any apology.
Families run into the same thing. A Libra parent may hear about a Scorpio child's day from someone else first and feel it, since in astrology a Scorpio child tends to confide in one person, and it isn't always a parent. A Scorpio parent may worry about a Libra child's packed calendar of friends when the child is simply happiest in company.
Will Libra and Scorpio last?
By the usual astrological account they can, though it takes more work than the first months suggest. Scoring sites split on it: when we looked on October 17, 2026, AskNebula rated it 78% and zodiacsign only 29%. For two neighbors with no aspect between them, either verdict is easy to argue.
For marriage, the practical question is whether you can agree on time together without either of you resenting the arrangement. Talk through an ordinary week: evenings with friends, family visits, nights alone, and who hears the news first. Marriage brings in-laws, old friends and colleagues who all want a share of your time, so come back to that agreement whenever one of you starts feeling left out.
Two full charts can answer what the Sun signs can't. Is the Libra's Venus really in Scorpio, and does it touch the Scorpio's Mars or Moon? Astrologers read one person's Venus meeting the other's Mars as attraction and meeting the other's Moon as comfort, with a square or opposition marking where it rubs. A synastry chart runs those checks both ways round. Birth times add one more layer: the house of the Scorpio's chart where the Libra's Venus lands. Each of you can begin with a birth chart from a date, time and place.
One check comes first if either birthday falls on October 22, 23 or 24: the October edge of Scorpio moves from year to year, so make sure which sign the Sun was in.
The other way round: a Scorpio and a full calendar
Take a different couple. This Libra has book club on Tuesdays, a standing Sunday brunch with college friends and a birthday dinner most weekends, and enjoys every one of them. The Scorpio partner has Mars in Libra, found on 16.5% of sampled Scorpio Sun dates, more than any other Mars sign, and read as putting its drive into keeping the peace. So the Scorpio goes to the brunches, smiles through the dinners and keeps a private tally of the evenings that went to someone else.
It comes out months later over something small: a group chat the Libra answered halfway through a film. The Libra hears an accusation out of nowhere and starts listing the nights they did stay in. The Scorpio hears a scorecard, which is fair, since that's what they've been keeping, and goes quiet. No single friend is the problem. It's the time, and the Scorpio still hasn't found a way to ask for more of it that doesn't sound like a request to drop everyone.

Libra and Scorpio questions
Did Libra and Scorpio use to be one sign?
Not in Ptolemy's zodiac, which already has twelve signs of 30° each. What they share is a name. The sign before Scorpio was once called the Claws of the Scorpion, and Ptolemy still uses that name alongside Libra. F. E. Robbins, translator of the Loeb edition, dates the general use of the name Libra to the first century BC.
Is Libra the opposite sign of Scorpio?
No. They're next-door signs, one apart on the wheel. Scorpio's opposite is Taurus and Libra's is Aries. The two feel different, air beside water and a social sign beside a private one, but the geometry makes them neighbors, and Ptolemy gives neighbors no aspect at all.
Do Libra and Scorpio work well together?
Often, when they split the work by strength. Libra tends to be cast as good with clients, colleagues and the politics of a room, and Scorpio as good at finding the real problem and staying on it. The friction to watch is who has the boss's ear. Agree who speaks for the project, and give each other credit out loud.
