Leo and Scorpio compatibility: one tells everyone, one waits until it's certain
At eight in the morning, the Scorpio is halfway out the door when the phone rings. It's the Leo's mother, calling to say congratulations on the promotion. The promotion isn't official until the company announces it later in the week. The Scorpio hasn't told their own mother yet, or their closest friend, or anyone. The Leo told theirs last night, glowing, because they were proud and it was too good to keep.
Astrology calls Leo and Scorpio a square, two fixed signs at a hard angle, and expects friction along with the pull. Some of that friction is about privacy. One partner celebrates out loud and early; the other keeps good news close until nothing can take it back. Scorpio and Leo can share a home, a bed and a great deal of loyalty and still trip over whose news it is to tell.
Leo and Scorpio compatibility is a hard match in astrology: two fixed signs in a square, magnetic and proud. Leo tends to share good news at once and Scorpio to wait until it's certain. Loyalty on both sides holds them together; the harder work is making room for different social lives and settling fights neither wants to lose.

Some signs couldn't be confirmed
A date alone doesn't tell us the birth time or time zone, so we allow extra room around each position. Here that allowance covers two signs, which doesn't mean the planet changed signs that day. Both candidates are shown and this pair is left uninterpreted. The birth chart calculator opens empty, so you can enter either person's details.

Courting fast, trusting slowly
The pull is usually quick on both sides; the courting runs at two speeds. A Leo is said to court in the open, with plans, compliments, a clear 'I like you' and an early introduction to friends. A Scorpio tends to court by paying close attention and saying less, and holds back the word 'serious' until they've watched for a while. Each pace can read wrong to the other. The Leo may decide the Scorpio isn't that interested, and the Scorpio may wonder how many other people get the same compliments.
Commitment evens that out. Both are fixed signs, so once the Scorpio trusts and the Leo has chosen, neither gives up on the other easily. Can a Leo and a Scorpio marry and stay married? Astrologers call it hard work, not a bad bet. Two people who both hold on tend to stay through rough patches. The same trait makes both of them dig in during an argument, and it can keep them together after the relationship has stopped working.
Two everyday differences are worth settling early. The Leo tends to want a wide circle and a shared social life, the Scorpio a few close friends and some time alone. Money can split the same way, spent to enjoy and to share on one side, kept back for security on the other. Keeping some friends separate, and deciding together what money is for, heads off a lot of arguments.
The ordinary days can be the best part. The Leo gets them out of the house and into plans; the Scorpio picks the place, the book or the person worth the time. Both are persistent, too, which helps with any goal they share once they've agreed who decides what.
Published verdicts on the pair are all over the place: zodiacsign scored it at 29% on October 17, 2026, while PrepScholar's ratings gave its romance and sex full marks. The split fits the square itself, which is said to bring a strong pull and steady friction at once.
A square written into the rulerships
Leo and Scorpio sit three signs apart, and this square also sits inside an old explanation of why each planet rules the signs it does. In the scheme Ptolemy explains in Tetrabiblos I.17, the Sun takes Leo, the Moon takes Cancer, and each of the other five planets gets one sign on the Sun's side of the zodiac and one on the Moon's, in the order of their spheres. Running on from Leo, that gives Virgo to Mercury, Libra to Venus, Scorpio to Mars, Sagittarius to Jupiter and Capricorn to Saturn. Mars's two signs, Ptolemy adds, sit square to the houses of the two lights, which suits a planet he treats as harsh and out of tune.
His Loeb translator, F. E. Robbins, spells out the result in a footnote: Aries is square to the Moon's house, 'and Scorpio to the sun's house, Leo.' So this is the one Scorpio pairing where the square is part of the reason Scorpio belongs to Mars at all. Ptolemy's general rule points the same way. He calls the square disharmonious on the grounds that it joins signs of opposite kinds (I.13), and that reason fits this square exactly, with Leo in his day series and Scorpio in his night series.
Ptolemy also sorts the planets into a day sect and a night sect, putting the Sun with the day and Mars with the night (I.7). So the pair sets the day's own light, at home in Leo, beside a night sign ruled by a night planet. Astrologers who like the symbolism read it as one partner who works things out in the open and one who works them out in private. Modern astrologers also give Scorpio Pluto, discovered in 1930, as a co-ruler, but Ptolemy's ruler is Mars.
Venus in Virgo meets Venus in Scorpio
Venus never gets far from the Sun, and for these two signs it never crosses into the other's Sun sign. In our 1950–2005 date sample, no Leo Sun date had Venus in Scorpio and no Scorpio Sun date had Venus in Leo. The two Venus signs match in only 5.3% of modeled pairs of dates, always in Virgo or Libra.
The most common Venus pairing is Venus in Virgo on the Leo date with Venus in Scorpio on the Scorpio date, at 11.0% of modeled pairs. Tradition is hard on both. Ptolemy puts Venus in her depression in Virgo (I.19), and William Lilly's 1647 table, a later source, counts Scorpio as Venus's detriment. Astrologers describe Venus placed in Virgo as love shown through attention and useful things, and the Scorpio partner's Venus in Scorpio as love that goes deep and stays private. Neither is the showy Venus of the Leo stereotype. So love between these two can look quieter than either Sun sign suggests: practical care on one side, private loyalty on the other.
Mercury, the planet tied to talk and news, adds friction. The two Mercury signs sit square to each other in 39.9% of modeled pairs of dates, the highest of the twelve pairings a Scorpio can have. Most of that is Mercury in Leo with Mercury in Scorpio, repeating the Suns' square, at 27.1%. The next most common combination, Mercury in Virgo for the Leo with Mercury in Scorpio at 20.8%, is a sextile instead. The two Mercury signs never match. A square between two Mercury signs is said to mark a gap in how two people talk things through and hear each other.
Both Venus and Mercury depend on the exact birth date, so see which signs your own two dates give in the comparison above, or check where Venus fell for each of you one birthday at a time.

The most frequent Mars signs on sampled Leo dates are Leo (17.7%), Cancer (14%), Virgo (13.5%), Libra (11.9%), and on Scorpio dates Libra (16.5%), Virgo (13.7%), Scorpio (12.7%), Capricorn (11.5%).
Our date sample records where the Sun, Mercury, Venus and Mars stood at noon UTC on each of the 20,454 days from January 1, 1950, through December 31, 2005, and no day counts for more than another. Each pair figure joins a Leo date and a Scorpio date picked independently. The figures describe planetary placements, not how relationships turn out.
Ask before you announce
The Leo acted out of pride, and the Leo's mother out of kindness. To a Leo, good news is meant to be shared while it's warm, and telling people about a partner's win is a way of showing pride in them. Astrology reads Leo, the Sun's own sign, as a sign that lives in the open, and Scorpio, which traditional astrology gives to Mars, as one that holds what matters until it's safe. So the Scorpio doesn't mind that people know. They mind that they didn't get to choose who heard first, when they'd meant to tell their own mother before anyone. The Leo may be stung in turn, because pride in a partner just got treated as a breach.
One question, asked before the call, would have headed this off: 'Is this mine to tell yet?' The Leo can still celebrate. Asking costs a few hours of sitting on something good, and it saves the Scorpio from hearing their own news from someone else. The Scorpio can make it easier, too, by saying when news will be ready as soon as it arrives: 'Once the announcement's out, tell whoever you like.'
The rule runs both ways. When the Leo has news, the Scorpio's instinct may be to keep it close on their behalf, telling no one and being proud quietly. To a Leo, that silence can feel like the win never happened. So ask the reverse question as well: 'Who do you want to hear this from me?' A Scorpio who tells one person on the Leo's behalf, warmly and on purpose, does more for a Leo than they might expect.
Some news belongs to both of you, like a move, an engagement or a job that changes your life together. Decide the order before anyone hears it: which family first, which friends, all at once or one at a time. Then neither of you learns from a relative what the other already said.
Mars, heat and two kinds of pride
Mars was in Leo on 17.7% of Leo Sun dates in our 1950–2005 sample, a higher own-sign share than Mars reaches for any other Sun sign. On Scorpio Sun dates, Mars was in Scorpio on 12.7%. Both at once turn up in only 2.2% of modeled pairs of dates, so neither temper can be read straight off the Sun sign. First find out where each Mars actually sits.
Astrologers see a Leo Mars as a quick, proud flare and a Scorpio Mars as a slow, steady burn. In an argument, that tends to mean one partner wants it out and finished while the other wants it understood before it's over. The Leo can ask 'Is there more?' before calling it done, and the Scorpio can say the rest out loud instead of going quiet. Then settle who gets to hear about the fight. A Leo may want to talk it over with a friend that night, and a Scorpio may want nobody to know there was one, so ask before telling anyone, the same as with good news.
Talking it through doesn't always settle it. Sometimes both have said their piece, calmly, and still want different things. Maybe it's whether the Leo's younger brother can stay with them for a month. Who wins when a Leo and a Scorpio fight? By the usual reading, neither: two fixed signs can outlast each other for a long time, so pick a way to decide instead of waiting for a winner. A guest in a shared home needs both of you to say yes, so trade specific offers rather than positions, such as 'Two weeks works for me if we set his leaving date now.' Until one offer suits you both, the visit waits.
In bed, chemistry is the part of this square that astrologers rate most generously, and the pride shows here as well: a Leo wants to be wanted openly and told so, and a Scorpio wants to be chosen completely and in private. With the most common Venus pairing, a Virgo Venus on the Leo side, the Leo may be more attentive and less theatrical in private than the sign suggests, which a Scorpio tends to welcome. Jealousy follows the same split. A Leo enjoys being admired in public, and a Scorpio can read an admiring crowd as competition, so settle what counts as flirting and what's just warmth before it comes up. None of this changes with gender.
Friends, and the stories each one may tell
As friends, a Leo might praise you in front of everyone while a Scorpio checks in privately afterward. Either can feel like support. The trouble starts when the praise includes something you hadn't agreed to share.
The friendship has a lot going for it. The Leo pulls the Scorpio into plans they end up enjoying, and the Scorpio is where the Leo goes for an honest opinion instead of a flattering one. Both signs are known for lasting friendships, and the same persistence can make it hard to admit when one needs to change. Two fixed signs can turn competitive, too. If a friend's success leaves you feeling overlooked, say so before it turns into a running contest.
Families meet the same sharing question. A Leo parent proud of a Scorpio child's good grade can ask before telling the relatives, and Leo and Scorpio siblings can do the same for each other. At work the two share a high standard and little patience for being undercut, so divide up who speaks to what before the meeting, and the rivalry stays friendly. Credit for shared work is a related problem, and who gets thanked when a Gemini and a Leo make something together looks at that one.
Two signs that take the same time to rise
Ptolemy pairs Leo and Scorpio in one more place. Attacking an argument made for the Egyptian system of dividing up the signs, he notes that its rough method of reckoning rising times would have Virgo and Libra each rise in 38⅓ 'times', and 'Leo and Scorpio each' in 35, though the tables show those two take longer (I.20). A 'time', Robbins explains, is the period one degree of the celestial equator takes to rise, and the grouping treats Leo and Scorpio as two signs that rise in equal times.
They do, wherever both signs rise and set in full, which covers nearly everywhere people live. Leo and Scorpio sit at equal distances on either side of the start of Libra. By our calculation for latitude 36° north, each takes 36.9 degrees of the sky's turn to rise, about two and a half hours, the longest rising time of the twelve signs, tied. Their bands of sky mirror each other too, Leo from about 20° to 11.5° north of the celestial equator and Scorpio from 11.5° to 20° south.
Day length is another matter. By our calculation for New York, the Sun at 15° Leo (August 7, 2026) gives 14 hours 6 minutes of daylight, and at 15° Scorpio (November 7, 2026) only 10 hours 12 minutes. The two signs still take equal time to rise, though the Sun crosses them in very different seasons.
What the Leo says that evening
Put the Leo's Venus in Virgo and the Scorpio's in Scorpio, the most common Venus pairing for these two Sun signs. A Virgo Venus is said to show love by being useful, and the Leo's call home was partly that. Their mother likes to plan a celebration dinner, and now she had a few days' notice. A Scorpio Venus, by the usual account, keeps the important things close until they're safe. So the useful part didn't register with the Scorpio. What registered was that the Leo's mother heard first, before the Scorpio's own.
The apology works better when it starts with what happened. 'It was yours to tell, and I told it. I'm sorry, and next time I'll ask first.' The reason, 'I was proud of you', can come afterward if the Scorpio wants to hear it. The Scorpio calls their own mother before dinner, and once the announcement is out, the Leo gets to tell everyone else.
For a fuller reading, an astrologer would compare each person's Sun with the other's Moon: whether the Leo's Sun makes an aspect to the Scorpio's Moon, and the Scorpio's Sun to the Leo's Moon. A Sun on a partner's Moon is read as one person's pride landing straight on the other's private feelings, for better or worse. A plain guide to reading synastry walks through those cross-chart aspects once you have a birth chart for the Leo and one for the Scorpio.

Leo and Scorpio questions
Why are Leos and Scorpios so attracted to each other?
Astrologers usually describe Leo as drawn to Scorpio's focus and Scorpio as drawn to Leo's warmth. The Leo is open and sure of itself, which a Scorpio rarely sees all at once, and the Scorpio is hard to read, which keeps a Leo curious. Both are fixed signs, so once the interest starts, neither lets go of it lightly, and the square's friction is part of the pull.
Why do Leo and Scorpio form a square?
They sit three signs apart, a quarter of the zodiac, and that distance is a square. They aren't opposites, which would be six signs apart: Leo's opposite is Aquarius. In Ptolemy's scheme this square is deliberate. Leo is the Sun's house, and Mars's signs were placed square to the houses of the Sun and Moon, so Scorpio lands square to Leo, as his Loeb translator notes. Ptolemy also counts the square as disharmonious because it joins a day sign with a night sign, which is exactly this pair.
How loyal are Leo and Scorpio as friends?
Very, in opposite styles. A Leo friend defends you out loud and turns up for every celebration; a Scorpio friend keeps your secrets and never repeats a word. Neither drops a friend easily. The usual friction is pride, since neither likes to apologize first, so a falling-out between them can last longer than the problem did.
