The red ribbon is framed and hanging in the hall by Saturday evening. The Virgo's plum cake took second place at the town fair that afternoon, and the Leo has already told half their friends. The Virgo walks past the frame on the way to the kitchen and talks about the underbaked middle, and about the judge's note on the crumb.

The Leo can't understand why 'second in the whole town!' isn't enough, and the Virgo can't understand why the Leo won't hear about the crumb. Virgo and Leo sit next to each other in the zodiac, and each cares in a way the other doesn't always want: one applauds, the other improves. And they haven't agreed which of the Virgo's wins are ready for a fan and which are still with the editor.

Side by side on the wheel, strangers by element

Leo and Virgo are neighbors, one sign apart, and Ptolemy gives signs that close together no aspect. He calls them disjunct, or alien (Tetrabiblos I.16). Modern astrologers call it a semi-sextile. Leo is one of the three fire signs and Virgo belongs with Taurus and Capricorn in earth. Leo is fixed and Virgo mutable, and in Ptolemy's scheme Leo is a day sign where Virgo is a night sign (I.12).

So every area lands in the mixed band. Friendship does best, because neighbors make easy company and a fixed sign beside a mutable one settles into roles: the steady one anchors and the flexible one bends. Love and sex do least well. Fire wants warmth said out loud, earth shows it in tasks, and the two signs keep different paces. The Sun's house and the sign beside it

The reason these two signs sit together starts with the Sun. Ptolemy gives Leo to the Sun and takes 'the semicircle from Leo to Capricorn to be solar' (I.17), handing each planet one sign on that side in order of distance. Mercury gets the very next sign, Virgo. Elsewhere he notes that Mercury 'never is far removed in longitude from the heat of the sun' (I.4), and seen from Earth it never is. Leo's ruler and Virgo's travel together all year.

He also sets the two rulers apart from the rest. Most planets in his scheme are either kindly or harmful, but 'the sun and Mercury, however, they thought to have both powers, because they have a common nature, and to join their influences with those of the other planets, with whichever of them they are associated' (I.5). In a couple, astrologers can read that as two people who catch each other's mood, so the Leo's confidence spreads and so does the Virgo's doubt.

They share no triangle. The Sun governs the fire signs by day, Mercury helps govern the air signs by night, and neither has a share in the other's element (I.18). What they do share is the end of summer. From the start of Leo season to the end of Virgo season, New York loses about 2 hours 28 minutes of daylight, by our calculation. And at latitude 36° north the two signs together take 73.3 degrees of the sky's turn to rise, about 4 hours 53 minutes, tied with Libra and Scorpio as the slowest pair of neighboring signs.

Venus in Virgo, as often as not

At least one of a Leo date and a Virgo date has Venus in Virgo in 50.7% of modeled pairs, the highest of the twelve Virgo pairings. The single most common Venus pairing is a swap, Venus in Virgo on the Leo's birthday with Venus in Leo on the Virgo's, in 10.5% of modeled pairs. Mercury follows suit, with at least one of the two in Virgo in 68.8% of pairs.

Ptolemy puts Venus at its weakest in Virgo, in its depression (I.19), and astrologers read it as love shown through usefulness: the mended zipper, the booked appointment, the honest second opinion. Fan or editor, and which win gets the frame

The frame is still in the hall, and the Virgo has started a second plum cake to get the crumb right. The Leo was proud and said so to everyone. The Virgo was proud too, and showed it the only way that felt honest, by already planning the next cake. To the Leo, the crumb talk sounded like a win being waved away. To the Virgo, the frame was a fuss over a cake that wasn't right yet.

What helps is a plain agreement about the Virgo's wins. The Virgo picks which ones count as finished enough to celebrate, maybe the ribbon but not yet the recipe, and on those the Leo has free rein. The Leo then asks how the Virgo likes to be celebrated: a frame in the hall, a dinner for two, or a story told to friends. A long marriage between them stays mixed, and the strain to watch is feeling judged at home. The Virgo's Venus sign changes what that frame feels like.

A Virgo with Venus in Leo, the commonest Venus sign on Virgo birthdays, is secretly pleased by the frame and a bit embarrassed to say so, and the crumb talk is partly cover. A Leo who says 'you're allowed to like it' may get a smile, and later a photo of the ribbon sent to an old friend.

A Virgo with Venus in Virgo may honestly find the ribbon premature. This Virgo wants it in a drawer until the next cake is right, and praise for an unfinished thing feels like being misread. The Leo still wants it where guests can see it. What they haven't settled is whether the frame stays in the hall until next year's fair, or waits in a drawer for a cake the Virgo calls finished.
