What your Mars sign actually means

Mars is the part of the chart that acts. It governs how you pursue what you want, how you handle a fight, how your anger arrives and how long it stays, what you find hot as opposed to what you find lovely (that one is Venus), and how much energy you bring to a Tuesday afternoon. Two people can share a Sun sign and handle pressure very differently, and astrologers read that difference through Mars. The Sun says who you are. Mars says what you do about it.

The old texts were blunt about this planet. William Lilly, writing in 1647, called Mars "Masculine, Nocturnall Planet, in nature hot and dry, cholerick and fiery, the lesser Infortune, author of Quarrels, Strifes, Contentions," and then, in the next breath, credited a well-placed Mars with being "in feats of Warre and Courage invincible" and "of prudent behaviour in his own affaires" (Christian Astrology, ch. X, spelling as printed). That double edge is the whole subject. Every Mars sign is a way of being brave and a way of being difficult, and the sign decides which shows first.

Astrology gives Mars two daily jobs, anger and exertion, and population surveys measure both. Gallup's global emotions tracking found that 22% of adults worldwide felt a lot of anger the previous day, and the American Time Use Survey has 23.4% of people aged 15 and over in the US taking part in sport or exercise on an average day. Neither survey tested astrology, and the two samples don't match, so read the numbers as scale rather than proof: plenty of people are angry or exerting themselves on any given day, and the Mars sign is astrology's account of what that looks like from the outside.

Why your birth date is almost always enough

Mars takes six to nine weeks to cross a 30-degree sign when it's moving normally (its top speed is a little under a degree a day, and it slows to a standstill at a station). On a birthday that isn't an ingress day, the sign at midnight and the sign at 11:59 pm are the same, which is why this calculator can answer from a date and a place; the place matters because it sets the time zone. We counted: across the 40,543 days from 1930 to 2040, Mars crossed a sign boundary on 762 of them, or 1.9%, counted in UT. On those days, and the local dates that overlap them, a birth time decides the sign, and the card above tells you when your birthday is one of them.

The complication is the retrograde. NASA's description is the clearest one: "The two planets are like race cars on an oval track. Earth has the inside lane and moves faster than Mars ... About every 26 months, Earth comes up from behind and overtakes Mars" (NASA Mars Exploration Program). For 60 to 80 days around that overtaking, Mars appears to move backwards through the zodiac, and when the loop straddles a sign boundary the stay splits three ways: enter, retreat, re-enter. Lilly had the figure nearly right in 1647: "he is retrograde 80 dayes."

A year-per-row table can't show a three-way split, so it silently misfiles everyone born in the retreat. The most recent case, in civil UT dates: Mars entered Leo on November 4, 2024, stationed retrograde on December 6, backed into Cancer on January 6, 2025, turned direct on February 24 at 17° Cancer, and only re-entered Leo on April 18, 2025. A baby born on Valentine's Day 2025 has Mars in Cancer, retrograde, and a flattened table calls it Leo. The next split runs Virgo to Leo and back between November 2026 and May 2027, with the station on January 10, 2027 at 10° Virgo.

This calculator computes your Mars from your actual date, time and place, and its window lookup runs on an ingress table that keeps every retreat from 1930 to 2040 as its own dated row, cross-checked row by row against JPL Horizons across the whole span and against two published tables through 2035. It also checks your date against the exact station days, because about one birth in 10 (9.6% of days across our station table) happens with Mars retrograde, which many Mars tools skip.

Is there a best Mars sign? The dignity table, and the catch

Traditional astrology grades Mars by sign. It rules Aries (its day house) and Scorpio (its night house), it's exalted in Capricorn and in its fall in Cancer, and it's in detriment in Libra and Taurus, the two signs Venus rules. Ptolemy gave reasons rather than lists: Mars got Aries and Scorpio because they sit "in quartile aspect to the luminaries," matching "Mars' destructive and inharmonious quality," and Capricorn as its exaltation "because in it he is farthest south," with "Cancer as his depression" (Tetrabiblos I.17 and I.19).

Now the catch. Read the labels as style, never as ability. We computed Mars for a few hundred famous birth dates while building this page, and the "weak" placements hold plenty of people who won everything: Lionel Messi, Roger Federer and Michael Phelps all have Mars in Cancer, its fall; Nelson Mandela, Winston Churchill, Pelé and Malala Yousafzai all have Mars in Libra, its detriment. A dignified Mars gets results the way the textbooks expect. A debilitated one gets them by a route the textbooks didn't anticipate, and the twelve guides below spend most of their length on exactly that route. The sign label is one piece of a full judgment, which also weighs degree, house, sect and aspects.

Venus versus Mars, and why you need both

Venus is the attracting half of a relationship and Mars is the pursuing half. Venus describes what appeals to you, how you want affection delivered and what makes a relationship feel good; Mars describes how you go after it, what desire feels like from the inside and what you do when it's threatened. A gentle Venus with a blunt Mars is a common reason people feel they send mixed signals, and a matched pair (Venus in Taurus with Mars in Taurus, say) is why some people seem to want one thing and pursue it the same way every time. Mars sign compatibility, in one paragraph

Two Mars signs meet in the argument and in bed, in that order of frequency. The element rule is the useful shorthand: fire Mars (Aries, Leo, Sagittarius) fights loud and fast and forgets; earth Mars (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) fights slow and remembers; air Mars (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius) fights with reasons and sometimes with silence; water Mars (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces) fights sideways and keeps score in private. Same-element pairs tend to share a tempo, fire with air usually runs hot and talkative, earth with water usually runs slow and loyal, and fire with water or air with earth is where the "why are you being like this" arguments live. That's the rough first pass. The "Mars effect," stated honestly

Whenever Mars comes up, so does Michel Gauquelin. The French psychologist first reported in 1955 that eminent sports champions were born more often than chance would predict at the hours when Mars had just risen or just crossed the meridian; in the pooled sample he published in 1970 it was 452 of 2,088 champions, 21.65%, against an expectation of about 17% (Kurtz, Nienhuys and Sandhu, 1997). The claim is about Mars's daily position relative to the horizon, a house-like "sector," and, as the skeptic Geoffrey Dean put it, "had nothing to do with sun signs or other zodiacal signs" (Skeptical Inquirer, 2002). A Belgian committee reproduced the raw figure in 1976 (119 of 535, 22.24%) but rejected the baseline; an American sample in 1979 found 55 of 408 (13.5%); the French CFEPP study published in 1996 found 207 of 1,120 (18.48%), no different from controls. Suitbert Ertel pooled 4,391 athletes in 1988 and argued the rate rose with eminence (Ertel, 1988); Nienhuys documented that Gauquelin had reported birth-time corrections selectively and called the effect "most likely... an illusion" (Skeptical Inquirer, 1997). Seventy years on, the honest position is that a small excess in the original data has never been confirmed with independently collected champions. It's the most famous Mars statistic there is, and it says nothing about your Mars sign either way.

Mars sign dates, 2024 to 2028

Civil dates in UT; "last full day" is the final complete day in the sign, and Mars enters the next sign the day after. A retreat row is Mars backing into the sign during a retrograde.
