What is my Moon sign?

Your Moon sign is the zodiac sign the Moon was in at the minute you were born. Enter your birth date and place and the calculator finds it from NASA JPL data, in the Western tropical zodiac. A birth time adds the Moon's exact degree and its house, and it settles the answer on a date the Moon changed sign.

The Moon spends about 47 to 61 hours in each sign, so finding yours takes a date, a place and, on change dates, a birth time. Once you have your sign, read what the 12 Moon signs mean for the needs and habits behind each one.

How to read your result

One sign, no time entered: the Moon stayed in that sign for your whole birth date, so you're done. Two signs and a time: the Moon moved that day, and the result tells you which sign each side of that time belongs to. If your family remembers a morning or an evening birth, that's often enough to pick one. In almost every case the time is exact to the minute: enter it as a birth time and you get the old sign, and one minute later the new one. One sign, a degree and a house: you entered a time, so the Moon is placed for that minute, with its Placidus house.

Still missing a time? Many US long-form birth certificates list it, and the state vital records office that holds yours can issue a copy. Hospital records and a parent's baby book are the next places to look.

Worked example: July 4, 1995, in New York

The Moon moved from Virgo into Libra that afternoon, so the birth time decides the answer.

No birth time
Virgo or Libra. Still in Virgo at 3:55 PM EDT, in Libra at 3:56 PM.
Born at 9:00 AM
Virgo, at 26°14′.
Born at 6:00 PM
Libra, at 1°08′, in the 10th house.
A tool that assumes noon
Virgo, whatever time you were born.

From 3:56 PM on, that noon answer is wrong, which covers the last 8 hours of the date. A 6:00 PM birth also gets a house to read: the Moon sits near the top of the chart, in the 10th house.

How often your birth date isn't enough

On 43.9% of dates, the Moon changes sign at some point in the day: 12,192 of the 27,759 US Eastern calendar dates from 1950 through 2025. On the other 56.1%, your date and place are enough. The share comes out the same in London and Kolkata.

Several popular calculators treat a blank birth time as noon, often without saying so. How much that matters depends on when you were really born:

Share of birth minutes where a noon guess gives the wrong Moon sign, by birth time, US Eastern, 1950 to 2025
Born between Noon guess is wrong for
12 AM to 3 AM 19.15% of those minutes
3 AM to 6 AM 13.66% of those minutes
6 AM to 9 AM 8.19% of those minutes
9 AM to 12 PM 2.68% of those minutes
12 PM to 3 PM 2.81% of those minutes
3 PM to 6 PM 8.29% of those minutes
6 PM to 9 PM 13.79% of those minutes
9 PM to 12 AM 19.24% of those minutes

Across the whole clock that's 11.0% of birth minutes. Close to noon the guess rarely misses. Late at night it misses for about a fifth of those minutes, which is why this calculator shows you both signs instead of picking one.

US Eastern, 1950–2025. Shares of clock minutes, not of people, calculated with PyEphem and checked with Skyfield on NASA JPL's DE440s. Births aren't evenly spread across the clock.

Why moon sign calculators disagree

  • A blank birth time. One site fills in noon, another midnight. Enter the same time on both before you compare.
  • The time zone. The Moon crosses at one instant, but your clock reads it by place, which is why this form asks where you were born. Enter the local time written on your birth record.
  • The zodiac. Vedic sites use the sidereal zodiac. Results here use the tropical zodiac, like most Western astrology.

The calculation service behind this page runs on Lx Ephemeris, which is built on NASA JPL's DE440 ephemeris. If you want every other placement too, the free birth chart calculator draws the whole wheel.

Questions about finding your Moon sign

What is my moon sign if I don't know my birth time?

Leave the time blank and you'll get your Moon sign, or the two signs it could be. The Moon held one sign all day on 56.1% of dates, and that answer needs no time. On the rest, the calculator names both signs and the time of the change, so even a rough memory of morning or evening can settle it.

How do I find my moon sign by date of birth?

Enter your birth date and place in the form at the top of this page and press the button. The place sets the time zone, which decides where your date starts and ends. You'll get one sign, or two signs and the change time if the Moon moved that day. A time from your birth record narrows two signs to one.

Does my birth place change my moon sign?

It can, because the place sets the clock your birth time is read on. The Moon changes sign at one instant worldwide. That instant might be 1:00 AM on the 5th in New York and 10:00 PM on the 4th in Los Angeles, so a birth at 11:00 PM on the 4th gets a different Moon in each city.

How long does the Moon stay in each sign?

About 47 to 61 hours, or two and a quarter days on average. From 1950 through 2025 the shortest stay was 46.9 hours (Virgo, March 1993) and the longest was 61.1 hours (Capricorn, February 1983). It laps the zodiac in about 27⅓ days, so every sign gets close to the same share of time.

Can I be on the cusp of two moon signs?

At any given minute the Moon is in one sign, so your Moon has one sign even at 0° or 29°. A degree near the edge means the time on your birth record matters more, because a small error in it could change the answer.

Why is my Vedic moon sign different?

Vedic astrology uses the sidereal zodiac, which sits about 24° behind the tropical zodiac this calculator uses. That gap moves the Moon back one sign roughly four times out of five. Compare tropical results with tropical results, and sidereal with sidereal.

Why did my moon sign change when I added my birth time?

Adding your birth time places the Moon before or after that day's sign change, so one of the two signs drops away. Go with that answer as long as the time comes from a record.

Is my moon sign the same as my zodiac sign?

Your Moon sign can match your zodiac sign, but only if you were born close to a new Moon. The sign most people quote is where the Sun was, and your Moon sign is where the Moon was. Near a new Moon the two sit close together in the sky.

Is this moon sign calculator free?

Yes. The result is free with no account and no email. A free ZodiScope account saves it with the rest of your birth chart and reads each day's transits against it.
