How the moon phase soulmate test works
You look up the moon on your birthday and on your partner's, then slide the two pictures together. If they make one Full Moon, the trend calls you soulmates. Know Your Meme traces it to a TikTok from January 2022; it went viral in March 2023 through a CapCut template that puts two moon images side by side.
In the phase drawings the fit is exact. The line between light and shadow, called the terminator, is drawn as half of an ellipse, and a moon 180° from yours has the same terminator with the light on the other side, so its lit part is an exact copy of your dark part. Photos of the real Moon differ a little in tilt and size. The trend's four soulmate pairs:
- New Moon and Full Moon
- Waxing Crescent and Waning Gibbous
- First Quarter and Last Quarter
- Waxing Gibbous and Waning Crescent
Every other pair leaves a gap, an overlap or both. Some people play a graded version, in which the closer two moons come to one full disc, the stronger the match. The calculator measures that too. Add a second birthday and it lays one moon over the other and reports the puzzle fit: the share of the disc lit in exactly one of the two pictures. Only two moons exactly 180° apart reach a perfect fit.
Why a birth date alone can miss your phase
We computed every phase change from 1950 to 2025 with NASA JPL's DE421 ephemeris. On 7,520 of those 27,759 days (27.1%), the Moon moved into the next phase partway through the day. The phases are uneven, too, because the Moon speeds up and slows down along its orbit: a single phase lasted anywhere from 3.14 to 4.17 days. On a change day, a lookup that checks the Moon at one fixed hour gives the wrong phase to everyone born on the other side of the change.
So this calculator checks the whole day in the time zone you were born in. If the phase changed, it gives the minute and the phase on each side, and a birth time usually settles it. The same run shows the Full Moon is the rarest phase in the sky, at 12.29% of the time against 12.71% for First Quarter: the Moon moves slightly faster near New and Full Moon, an effect astronomers call the variation.
Method: phase from the Moon's apparent ecliptic longitude minus the Sun's, eight 45° phases centred on New, First Quarter, Full and Last Quarter; calendar days in US Eastern time, January 1, 1950 to December 31, 2025. The browser math agrees with DE421 to within 1.4 minutes on every phase change in that span.
Your lunation type: the astrology of the phase
Astrologers read the birth phase through Dane Rudhyar's The Lunation Cycle (1967), which splits the month into eight 45° types counted from the exact New Moon. Each of his types begins halfway through a sky phase, so the two names can differ for the same birthday. The calculator shows both. In his words:
-
New Moon type 0° to 45°
“eminently subjective, impulsive and emotional”
-
Crescent type 45° to 90°
“self-assertiveness, faith in oneself”
-
First Quarter type 90° to 135°
“crisis in action”
-
Gibbous type 135° to 180°
“personal growth”
-
Full Moon type 180° to 225°
“Relationship means everything”
-
Disseminating type 225° to 270°
“a disseminator of ideas”
-
Last Quarter type 270° to 315°
“crisis in consciousness”
-
Balsamic type 315° to 360°
“prophetic and completely turned toward the future”
In that book Rudhyar wrote about one person's phase, not about matching two. The older matching rule comes from Ptolemy's Tetrabiblos, which compares one partner's Moon with the other's Sun by their zodiac positions; that is the idea behind a synastry chart.
Moon phase vs moon sign
They come from the same Moon at the same minute, but they measure different things. The phase is the Moon's angle from the Sun, and it runs through all eight phases every 29.5 days. The Moon sign is the zodiac sign the Moon stood in, and it changes about every two and a quarter days: on 43.9% of days from 1950 to 2025 it changed sign at some hour. A Full Moon can fall in any sign, so your phase tells you nothing about your sign.
The Moon sign describes how you feel and what makes you feel safe; the Moon sign guide covers all twelve. To get yours, the Sun, Moon and Rising calculator needs your birth date, time and place. For two people, Moon sign compatibility compares the signs where this page compares the phases.
What a phase match can and can't tell you
The puzzle fit measures how two pictures fit. It doesn't measure how a relationship goes. When the sociologist David Voas checked the birthdays of 10,317,649 married couples in the 2001 census of England and Wales, Sun sign pairs turned up together no more often than chance would predict. Astrologers who compare two people use the full charts: the Moon, Venus and Mars of each, and the angles between them.
The zodiac compatibility calculator compares two people's Sun, Mercury, Venus and Mars signs from their birthdays, and the free birth chart calculator gives each of you every planet and house.
FAQ
What is a moon phase soulmate?
It is the phase opposite the one you were born under. New Moon pairs with Full Moon, Waxing Crescent with Waning Gibbous, First Quarter with Last Quarter, and Waxing Gibbous with Waning Crescent. Two moons exactly 180° apart make one Full Moon when you put the pictures together, because the lit part of one has the same outline as the dark part of the other.
Does your soulmate have the same moon phase as you?
Not under the trend's rule, which pairs opposite phases. Two moons in the same phase can't make a perfect puzzle fit: laid together they leave a gap, an overlap or both. Some versions of the trend call a same-phase pair twin flames instead of soulmates.
Do I need my birth time to find my moon phase soulmate?
Usually not. Each phase lasts between about three and four days, so most birthdays fall well inside one. From 1950 to 2025, though, the Moon moved into a new phase partway through 27.1% of days. On those birthdays the calculator gives the minute it changed and the phase on each side, and a birth time usually settles it.
Which moon phase is the rarest?
The Full Moon, by a small margin. From 1950 to 2025 the Moon spent 12.29% of the time in its Full Moon phase and 12.31% in its New Moon phase, against 12.71% for First Quarter and 12.70% for Last Quarter. The Moon runs slightly faster near New and Full Moon, so those two phases pass more quickly. Births don't follow the Moon either way: a study of 564,039 North Carolina births found no difference across the eight phases.
What if our moon phases don't fit?
Most couples don't. Pick two random moments from 1950 to 2025 and they land in opposite phases only 12.5% of the time, and in the same phase just as often. The puzzle fit tells you how the pictures fit. To compare the birth charts themselves, Compatibility Check does that with a free account.
Is a moon phase the same as a moon sign?
No. The phase measures the angle between the Moon and the Sun, which repeats every 29.5 days. The Moon sign is the zodiac sign the Moon was in, which changes about every two and a quarter days. Two people can share a phase and have different Moon signs, or the reverse.
Why does my birth moon look different on another site?
There are three usual reasons. The drawings here show the Moon as it looks from the Northern Hemisphere, lit on the right while it waxes; from the Southern Hemisphere the same phase looks mirrored. Sites also draw the lines between phases in different places, and this one uses eight equal phases centred on the exact New, First Quarter, Full and Last Quarter moons. And many sites check the Moon at one fixed hour, such as noon UTC, so on a day when the phase changed they can name the other phase.
