Scorpio compatibility

Scorpio compatibility with all twelve zodiac signs, and why the night signs come first

Most Scorpio compatibility lists start with Cancer and Pisces, then Capricorn, Taurus and Virgo, and usually name Gemini, Leo and Aquarius the hardest. Astrology describes Scorpio as the zodiac sign that's slow to trust, which makes every pairing a question of who gets let in, and how. Scorpio season usually runs from October 23 to November 21.

Ptolemy, writing in the second century, recorded a split of the zodiac into six day signs and six night signs, and this guide follows it. Scorpio is a night sign, and so is every sign on its usual best list. We also counted placements on every date from 1950 to 2005. One result complicates the usual advice: in our model, pairs of Scorpio and earth sign dates were the least likely to have their Mercury signs in the same element.

Cancer and Pisces, the other water signs, are Scorpio's usual best matches, followed by Capricorn and Virgo, the earth sextiles, and Taurus, the opposite sign. Another Scorpio usually rates well too. Leo and Aquarius square Scorpio and join Gemini on the worst-match lists, while Libra, Sagittarius and Aries get mixed reviews.

Scorpio in relationships at a glance
Dates Usually October 23 to November 21. A birthday on October 22 or 23, or on November 21 or 22, needs the year and the birth time
Element and kind Water. Ptolemy called Scorpio solid, a sign where the season that began in Libra is felt more firmly (later astrologers say fixed), and counted it among his six night signs
Ruling planet Mars in traditional astrology, shared with Aries. Modern astrologers added Pluto after its discovery in 1930
Dignities In Ptolemy's scheme no planet is exalted in Scorpio. It is the Moon's depression, the modern 'fall', as the sign opposite the Moon's exaltation in Taurus (Tetrabiblos I.19). Later tradition, as in William Lilly's 1647 tables, adds Venus's detriment
Usual best matches Cancer and Pisces, then Capricorn, Taurus and Virgo
Usual worst matches Gemini and Aquarius, then Leo

Venus, Mercury and Mars on Scorpio Sun dates

We cast a noon-UTC chart for every date from 1950 to 2005, 20,454 in all, and the Sun was in Scorpio on 1,675 of them, about 30 a year. Each date counts once, so every share here is a share of dates, not of people or couples, and another span of birth years would shift it a little.

Venus, the planet astrology ties to attraction, was in Scorpio on 32.0% of sampled Scorpio Sun dates, the highest own-sign Venus share of any Sun sign. The rest had it in Sagittarius (24.2%), Libra (23.6%), Capricorn (10.1%) or Virgo (10.0%). Yet Venus in Scorpio turned up more often on Libra Sun dates (34.5%) and Sagittarius Sun dates (34.0%) than on Scorpio's own.

Mercury was in Scorpio on 56.5% of Scorpio Sun dates, against 8.9% of all sampled dates, and in Sagittarius (28.5%) or Libra (15.0%) on the rest. Mars, Scorpio's traditional ruler, was in Scorpio on 12.7% of Scorpio Sun dates, against 9.3% of all sampled dates, and its most frequent sign there was Libra, at 16.5%. There's more on what astrologers read into Mars in Scorpio.

Venus was retrograde on 12.3% of Scorpio Sun dates in our sample, against 7.3% of all sampled dates, the highest share of the twelve signs. Those dates came from seven Scorpio seasons eight years apart, from 1954 to 2002, and the same eight-year rhythm came round again in 2010, 2018 and 2026. The 2026 Venus retrograde spans October 3 to November 13, from 8°29′ Scorpio back to 22°52′ Libra, and what astrologers make of it is covered under Venus in Scorpio, retrograde or direct. Mercury's 2026 retrograde spans October 24 to November 13, from 20°58′ Scorpio back to 5°02′ Scorpio, so the two share an end date. The Mercury retrograde calendar lists each window with its dates.

How we calculated the date sample

We calculated Sun, Mercury, Venus and Mars positions at noon UTC on each of the 20,454 calendar dates from 1 January 1950 to 31 December 2005, using PyEphem 4.2.1. Each date has equal weight. Apparent geocentric positions are converted to ecliptic longitude for that date and divided into twelve 30° tropical signs.

We group the dates by Sun sign, then count the share with Mercury, Venus or Mars in each sign. Pair estimates multiply those rounded shares, assuming two independent date draws with no age-gap restriction. For example, 20.5% of Taurus Sun dates and 20.4% of Cancer Sun dates have Venus in the same sign as the Sun: 0.205 × 0.204 × 100 gives about 4.2% for both placements together.

Shares are rounded to one decimal place and may not sum to exactly 100%. For two people with the same Sun sign, reversed Venus combinations are combined. These are frequencies in a date sample, not birth-population statistics or observations of couples. They cannot tell us how people communicate or whether a relationship will last.

Scorpio sign compatibility chart, sorted by night signs and day signs

Ptolemy reports that the twelve signs were split into six day signs and six night signs, alternating around the wheel because 'day is always yoked to night and close to it' (Tetrabiblos I.12). Scorpio is a night sign, and so are Taurus, Cancer, Virgo, Capricorn and Pisces. Aries, Gemini, Leo, Libra, Sagittarius and Aquarius belong to the day.

That split, with the ties Ptolemy draws between signs, sorts Scorpio's twelve matches into four groups. The night signs share either Scorpio's whole water triangle or two of the three planets that govern it. Two day signs are held to Scorpio by a square. The other four day signs have no tie to it at all. The chart below runs through them in that order, with where most published lists put each one.

Why Scorpio's best matches are all night signs

Count the best-match lists and Cancer and Pisces come up most, with Capricorn, Taurus and Virgo close behind. All five are night signs. By aspect and by the planets that govern their elements, every other night sign is tied to Scorpio at least twice in Ptolemy's scheme. Of the six day signs, only Leo and Aquarius have any tie, a square each, and Ptolemy's rules on equal rising times and equal days link them a second time, as their own pages show. The other four day signs have none. Cancer and Pisces trine Scorpio and sit in its own water triangle, which Mars governs with the Moon by night and Venus by day (I.18). Virgo and Capricorn sextile it and Taurus opposes it, and their earth triangle belongs to the Moon by night and Venus by day, sharing two of water's three governing planets.

Ptolemy counts even the hard aspects as ties. Signs in aspect are 'familiar one to another,' he writes, the opposition and square included, though he calls those two disharmonious because they join signs of opposite kinds (I.13). That reason fits Scorpio's squares. It doesn't fit Taurus, a night sign just like Scorpio. And the lists can't make up their minds about Taurus either: those that read the opposition as attraction put it first, and those that read it as friction drop it toward the bottom.

Scorpio's ruler belongs to the night as well. Ptolemy's tradition gave each sect one of 'the two destructive stars,' Saturn to the day and 'Mars, which is dry, to the moisture of the night' (I.7), so the night's moisture would temper it. The same chapter makes the Moon and Venus night planets, so every planet that governs Scorpio's triangle belongs to the night. Modern astrology gets to a similar place by its own route, treating the water signs as the signs of feeling and earth as the steady ground beside them.

Who is Scorpio's worst match? Two squares and four strangers

Gemini, Aquarius and Leo are the signs worst-match lists name most, and YourTango's 2021 list hands Gemini the title outright. So what sign does Scorpio square? Leo and Aquarius, three signs away on either side. Both are fixed like Scorpio and both are day signs, so the reason Ptolemy gives for calling a square disharmonious fits them exactly.

A square reads as chemistry to some writers and as friction to others, which would explain why Leo and Aquarius turn up near the top of one ranking and the bottom of the next. Astrologers expect both pairings to start with a strong pull and then argue over terms: with Leo, what gets said in public and when, and with Aquarius, what shape the relationship should take.

The other four day signs share no aspect with Scorpio. Libra and Sagittarius sit next door, Gemini and Aries five signs away, and Ptolemy calls signs with none of his ties 'disjunct' (I.16). Their elements share none of water's governing planets either, since the Sun and Jupiter govern fire and Saturn and Mercury govern air. Aries is the odd one. Mars rules it and Scorpio alike, and Ptolemy still gives it no tie to Scorpio.

For anyone asking who Scorpio should avoid, the squares and the strangers call for different work. With Leo or Aquarius, agree at the outset who decides what gets shared, and with whom. With Libra or Sagittarius, check Venus before assuming you have little in common: in our sample, Venus in Scorpio was more frequent on their Sun dates than on Scorpio's own.

Where Mercury, Venus and Pluto blur the night and day line

Among the twelve Scorpio pairings in our model, Mercury signs share an element least often for Virgo and Scorpio, in 9.4% of modeled pairs of dates, and most often for two Scorpio dates, in 42.3%. The three earth partners are the three lowest and the three water partners the three highest. Aries, a day sign Ptolemy left unconnected, comes fourth at 33.5%.

The reason is astronomy. Mercury never strays far from the Sun, so on a Scorpio Sun date it sits in Libra, Scorpio or Sagittarius and never in an earth sign. A Virgo, Capricorn or Taurus can only match it through a Mercury that has left earth too. So Scorpio's favorite sextiles are the pairings least likely to share a Mercury element, and in astrology Mercury is how two people talk. Check both Mercury signs with a free birth chart.

Sharing a Venus element is about equally common for every Scorpio pairing, 24.3% to 25.7% of modeled pairs of dates, so the attraction astrologers see in Venus has to be checked birthday by birthday. Sexual compatibility works the same way: astrologers compare both partners' Venus and Mars, and a Scorpio Sun alone doesn't settle either one, since Venus was in Scorpio on 32.0% of sampled Scorpio Sun dates and Mars on 12.7%. You can look up each partner's Venus sign from a birth date.

Pluto, Scorpio's modern ruler, was in Scorpio on 21.8% of sampled Scorpio Sun dates, all of them from 1983 to 1995. Astrologers treat it as a generation marker more than a personal trait, and the Scorpio sign page weighs Mars against Pluto as rulers.

Pluto entered Aquarius for good on November 19, 2024, square to Scorpio degree for degree, and leaves for good on January 19, 2044. Its exact squares reach the Sun's degree for 18.5% of sampled Scorpio Sun dates by the end of 2026 and for 50.9% by the end of 2032. A Pluto square to the Sun is said to bring a slow push to change, and it reaches Scorpio birthdays in order, the late October ones first.

Scorpio's best match for marriage, and the soulmate question

Marriage picks stay on the night side. The marriage.com guide (updated June 18, 2026) names Cancer, Capricorn and Pisces as Scorpio's best bets, and YourTango (2021) says Pisces or Capricorn. Soulmate lists lean on the same three, while mindbodygreen makes the case for Taurus on the idea that opposite signs are soulmates. Ask for Scorpio's twin flame and the older texts have nothing to say, because the term is modern.

Sun-sign compatibility has been tested against real marriage records. Helgertz and Scott (2020) worked through Swedish register data on 66,063 marital unions and found no consistent sign that the Sun-sign pairs astrology calls compatible were likelier to marry each other or less likely to divorce. They compared Sun signs only, not whole charts. No pairing on this page can tell you whether a given couple will last.

In synastry, astrologers compare the planets' actual positions. They check whether one person's Mars, Scorpio's traditional ruler, touches the other's Venus or Moon, the contacts they look to for pull and for trust. A synastry reading of two full charts lists those contacts both ways, and with birth times it shows which house of one chart the other's Mars and Venus fall in.

Scorpio friendship compatibility: best friends, family and coworkers

Astrology describes Scorpio as selective about close friends, slow to trust and very loyal once it does. Any Scorpio friendship turns on whether a confidence stays safe, even after an argument.

Cancer and Pisces, the other water signs, are seen as the friends who understand a Scorpio's moods without being told, and Virgo and Capricorn as the ones who turn up with practical help. The two squares, Leo and Aquarius, can make easier friends than partners, since a friendship doesn't have to settle who decides what. Libra and Sagittarius, the neighbors, are the friends who get Scorpio out of the house.

In families, astrology expects deep loyalty and a strong need for privacy, whether between siblings or between a Scorpio parent and child, and a Scorpio child tends to tell more when nobody presses. At work, decide early who raises a concern and who sees it through. Astrology casts Scorpio as the colleague who notices trouble before anyone else admits to it.

For friendship and family, astrologers lean on the Moon more than the Sun. On 43.9% of sampled Scorpio Sun dates the Moon changed sign during the UTC day, so a birth date alone often can't settle it, and how astrologers pair two Moon signs depends on birth times.

The Libra and Scorpio cusp, October 22 to 24, year by year

Most lists start Scorpio on October 23, and in recent years that mostly holds. The Sun's 2026 move into Scorpio is timed at 5:38 a.m. Eastern on October 23 (09:38 UT). Call a date mostly Scorpio when the Sun was in Scorpio for more than half of that US Eastern day: from 1960 to 2026, every date from October 23 to November 21 was mostly Scorpio in 43 of the 67 years.

The edges move. October 23 was mostly Libra in 24 of those 67 years, most recently in 2023. October 22 was never mostly Scorpio, though in 10 of those years the Sun crossed late that day, most recently at 11:51 p.m. Eastern in 2025. October 24 was Scorpio all day in every one of them. The Libra page lists the exact crossing for 2026 to 2028.

A Libra and Scorpio cusp isn't a third sign. At any moment the Sun is in one or the other, and a Big 3 lookup with the birth time and place settles which, along with the Moon and rising signs astrologers weigh beside the Sun.

The other end of the season, November 21 and 22, depends on the year too. The Scorpio season table on the Scorpio sign page has the times for 2026 to 2028, and the Sagittarius pairing in the chart above covers the birth years.

Scorpio compatibility questions

What sign is Scorpio most compatible with?

Cancer, then Pisces, by the count of published lists, with Capricorn, Virgo and Taurus next. In Ptolemy's scheme all five are night signs tied to Scorpio twice, by an aspect and by the planets that govern their element. Gender doesn't move the list, since astrology interprets a Scorpio Sun the same way for anyone. What moves it is the rest of each chart.

What zodiac sign should Scorpio avoid?

None outright. Gemini, Leo and Aquarius are the names that turn up most on worst-match lists. Leo and Aquarius square Scorpio, which astrology reads as a strong pull with friction built in, and Gemini shares no aspect with it at all. With any of the three, talk early about what stays private and who has the final word.

What is Scorpio's soulmate sign?

Pisces, Cancer and Capricorn are the soulmate picks that recur most, and some writers add Taurus as the opposite sign. Astrology has no single soulmate sign, though. Astrologers looking for that kind of bond compare Venus and the Moon in both charts, and a Scorpio Sun's Venus can sit in any of five signs, from Virgo to Capricorn.

What sign is most compatible with a Libra-Scorpio cusp?

Check which sign the Sun was actually in first, since a cusp isn't a third sign, and near the change that takes the birth year and time. If the Sun had reached Scorpio, Cancer and Pisces lead the list on this page. If it was still in Libra, the usual lists start with Gemini and Aquarius, Libra's fellow air signs.
