Scorpio and Scorpio compatibility: when both of you test instead of asking

Wednesday night, late, on the couch. One of you says, in a perfectly level voice, 'Priya invited me up to the lake house this weekend.' The other answers in the same voice: 'You should go.' Then nothing. The first was hoping to hear 'Can I come?' or maybe 'Stay here with me.' The second was waiting to be invited. Both go to bed sure they know what the other really meant, and both are wrong.

Two Scorpio Suns often read each other quickly, and that recognition is a big part of the pull. Astrology describes the sign as perceptive and private, and people like that tend to find things out instead of asking. They say something neutral and watch what happens. Put two of them together and both run that quiet test at once, so a couple who usually read each other well can still miss a want neither one says out loud.

Scorpio and Scorpio compatibility is close in astrology: two water signs who value privacy and commitment and read each other fast. Both are fixed, so a disagreement can drag on, and both tend to test instead of asking. Two Scorpios do best when one says what they want out loud, before the other has to guess.

What one Scorpio sees in another

The pull between two Scorpios is mostly recognition. The sign is said to be loyal, private and hard to fool, so each finds in the other someone who doesn't need things spelled out and means it when they commit. Each also sees the other's guard and wants to be the one let past it. For two people who hold back with almost everyone, it's a relief to tell someone something private and know it'll stay private.

Most of the time, the pairing is easy to live with. Two Scorpios tend to want the same kind of evening: at home, trading what they really made of the people they saw that week, or working through a detective series where both guess the culprit and keep score. Neither needs a crowd to feel close, and neither has to fill a silence to prove things are fine.

Can two Scorpios be soulmates? Astrologers often say so, because both signs put loyalty first, though the label won't tell you how either of you handles a breach of trust. For the long term, and for marriage, this is described as a pairing that lasts once trust is settled: two fixed signs who've chosen each other rarely leave over small things. The risk to watch is a long, cold standoff after a real hurt. That holds for a man and a woman, two women or two men. Gender doesn't change the reading.

Day to day, the harder part of a shared life is joint decisions, like money or where to live. Neither likes being overruled, and either may agree out loud while still minding.

Mercury often matches, Venus often doesn't

Mercury stays close to the Sun, so a Scorpio birthday can only have it in Libra, Scorpio or Sagittarius. In our 1950–2005 date sample it was in Scorpio on 56.5% of Scorpio Sun dates, in Sagittarius on 28.5% and in Libra on 15.0%. Mercury signs match in 42.3% of modeled pairs of two Scorpio dates, the second highest of the twelve same-sign pairs, just behind two Sagittarius dates at 42.8%. And across the twelve signs a Scorpio can pair with, no partner matches a Scorpio date's Mercury element as often.

Venus goes the other way. Two Scorpio dates share a Venus sign in only 23.7% of modeled pairs, the second lowest of the twelve same-sign pairs, because Venus on Scorpio birthdays spreads over five signs, from Virgo to Capricorn. One Venus figure does stand out. Both Venus signs fall in Scorpio in 10.2% of modeled pairs, the highest Venus repeat of the twelve same-sign pairings in our model.

In astrology, Mercury is how a person thinks and reads other people, and Venus is what they want from love and how they want it shown. In this sample, then, matching Mercury signs are far more common than matching Venus signs, and an astrologer reads the two separately. Two Scorpios may agree on how to talk something through and still want different kinds of affection.

Birth month moves the Mercury figure. Two October Scorpio dates share a Mercury sign in 53.4% of modeled pairs, two November dates in 43.7%, and an October date with a November date in only 38.3%. Early Scorpio birthdays can have Mercury back in Libra and late ones can have it ahead in Sagittarius, so an early Scorpio and a late one match least often. Run your two birth dates through the comparison above to see where yours land.

Trading the test for a plain question

Nobody lied on Wednesday. Priya really did invite one of you, and 'You should go' was a reasonable reply. What went unsaid was the part that mattered: 'Tell me you'll miss me' on one side and 'Ask me along' on the other. Astrology reads Scorpio as a sign that keeps a want to itself until it knows the answer is safe, and the safest way to find out is a test.

A test leaves you a way out if the answer hurts, since you never technically asked. It also leaves your partner unsure what you wanted. Between two Scorpios, both running one at once, it mostly produces two people who each think they know, and neither does.

The fix is small and a little uncomfortable. Say the want along with the news. 'Priya invited me, and I half want you to talk me out of it' is a harder sentence than 'Priya invited me', and a far more useful one. And when a flat sentence comes your way, don't guess at what's under it. Ask. 'Do you want me to come, or do you want me to ask you to stay?' sounds clumsy, and it saves a whole weekend of guessing. It doesn't matter much which of you goes first, as long as somebody does before bed.

Privacy is fine. Nobody owes a partner a running account of every thought, and two Scorpios tend to respect that in each other. A trap is something else. Leaving a plan half explained to see whether the other person asks, or saying 'it's fine' to see whether they push, sets someone up to fail a test they don't know they're taking. And quietly checking where a partner went or who they talked to has stopped being a test altogether. That's surveillance, and it wears trust down.

Born where the Moon sits lowest

Ptolemy gives the Moon her exaltation in Taurus, the sign where she first shows her light after meeting the Sun in Aries, and gives 'the diametrically opposite sign, Scorpio, her depression' (Tetrabiblos I.19). Depression is his word; modern astrologers say the Moon is in its fall there. He offers no reason beyond Scorpio's place opposite Taurus, and he exalts no planet at all in Scorpio.

In astrology the Moon stands for feelings, comfort and what a person needs to feel at home. Its weak place in Scorpio belongs to the sign's traditional symbolism of feeling deeply while showing little. A Scorpio Sun doesn't mean a Scorpio Moon, though. Each of you has a Moon of your own, in whatever sign it fell, and that Moon gives an astrologer something far more specific to read.

The same scheme gives the Moon a second job. Ptolemy hands the water triangle of Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces to Mars, with the Moon as co-ruler by night and Venus by day (I.18). So the planet of feeling helps govern Scorpio's element and sits at its weakest in Scorpio's own sign. For one of the three water signs, that's a neat summary: the feeling is there, and showing it is the hard part.

Two people born in the same sign don't form one of Ptolemy's four aspects, so the classical picture is less a link between two Scorpios than the same starting point, twice. Mars rules that starting point in traditional astrology. Modern astrologers added Pluto after its discovery in 1930, and the case for each of Scorpio's rulers is set out on the Scorpio page.

Jealousy, and the fights neither will drop

Jealousy between two Scorpios rarely looks like one suspicious partner and one oblivious one. Both notice everything: a name that comes up three times in a week, a reply that took longer than usual, a change in tone. Each also knows the other notices, so both may keep quiet about what they've seen and simply watch. Watching feeds it. Say what you noticed once, as a question ('You've mentioned the same name a lot lately. Anything I should know?'), and when that question comes your way, answer it straight and don't hear it as an accusation.

Speaking plainly doesn't settle everything. Sometimes both of you say exactly what you want, about how often either family visits, say, and the wants don't fit. Two fixed signs tend to dig in then, each waiting for the other to tire, sometimes for weeks. It goes faster if each of you sorts what you can't give up from what you'd only prefer. Preferences can be traded, split or taken in turns. When the things neither of you can give up collide, say so plainly. Trading won't fix that. You may have to change the arrangement itself, and sometimes there's no version both of you can live with.

When the hurt is real, a broken promise or a betrayal, two Scorpios tend to go silent and wait, each sure the other should move first. If you both want to stay, the one who broke the trust tells the whole of it once, without needing to be asked twice, and the other spells out what would let them stop looking for more. Trust comes back faster when the facts are offered than when they have to be found. Arguments that keep circling back to an old hurt get their own treatment in the way a Cancer and a Scorpio settle an old hurt.

The friendship where nobody asks 'How are you, really?'

Two Scorpios often make close friends. Each can keep things private without having to explain why, which is what astrology says a Scorpio wants from a friend. Both tend to keep a few trusted friends rather than a crowd, and a kept confidence counts for more with them than being asked along to everything. The weak spot is the one couples have. Neither asks how the other is really doing, because each assumes they'd already know.

A standing rule helps. Either friend can say 'tell me straight', and the other answers the question as asked, with nothing to read between the lines. Watch for a quieter contest too, over who needs the other less. If one of you always makes the first move, mention it once, calmly, before it turns into a count.

Scorpio siblings, and a Scorpio parent with a Scorpio child, often know the pattern from the inside: two people who can tell from the doorway that something's wrong, each waiting for the other to bring it up. Ask first, even when you're sure. At work, two Scorpio coworkers usually trust each other's discretion quickly and share information slowly, so decide up front who passes what upward.

Two Scorpios in bed, read through Venus and Mars

Astrologers describe strong sexual attraction between two Scorpios. Feeling wanted doesn't mean either of you feels ready to say what you like, though, and two private people can leave that unsaid for a long time. What helps most is naming what feels good and what you don't want, rather than hinting and waiting to see if the other picks it up.

Venus shows how far apart two Scorpio Suns can be here. When both Venus signs are in Scorpio, astrologers see a Venus in Scorpio as wanting all of one person, with no half measures. William Lilly's 1647 table counts Scorpio as Venus's detriment, a later tradition than Ptolemy's. More often one Venus is in Scorpio and the other next door. Venus in Scorpio with Venus in Libra turns up in 15.1% of modeled pairs, and the textbooks describe Venus in Libra as affection that likes ease and an even give and take. One partner wants depth on their own terms; the other wants it offered gracefully.

Mars is the sign's traditional ruler, and it rarely doubles up. Both Mars signs fall in Scorpio in just 1.6% of modeled pairs of dates, so in nearly every modeled pair at least one Mars sits in a different sign. Find where each of your Mars signs sits, and don't take a shared pace for granted until you have.

Their two Moons matter more here than their shared Sun. They might sit in the same sign, a trine apart, square to each other or with no aspect at all, and that Moon-to-Moon contact is where astrologers check whether two people feel understood without having to explain themselves. Comparing the two charts contact by contact shows it, and the reading for a Moon in Scorpio only applies if one of your Moons actually landed there. A birth time often decides that, so start with each Scorpio's own birth chart.

An October Scorpio, a November Scorpio and two flat remarks

Two Scorpios born a few weeks apart can have Mercury in different signs. In our date sample, Mercury was back in Libra on 32.1% of October Scorpio dates and ahead in Sagittarius on 38.7% of November ones, and an October date shares a Mercury sign with a November date in only 38.3% of modeled pairs. Take an October Scorpio with Mercury in Libra and a November one with Mercury in Sagittarius.

The November partner gets home and says, flatly, 'Your brother called. Again.' Mercury in Sagittarius is usually read as frank and quick, so to them it was a message with a mild joke tacked on. The October partner, whose Libra Mercury is said to weigh tone and keep the peace, hears a complaint about their family and starts working out how to raise it without a fight.

Then it runs the other way. Asked about the weekend, the October partner says 'Whatever you want is fine,' as a courtesy, and hopes to be asked again. The November partner takes it at face value and books a weekend at the coast. Neither has said anything untrue, and neither has asked what the other meant.

Scorpio and Scorpio questions

Do two Scorpios get along?

Usually, and quickly. Two Scorpios recognize each other's loyalty and need for privacy almost at once, and they tend to enjoy the same quiet kind of closeness. Where they struggle is saying what they want before the other has to guess, and backing down once both have dug in. Astrologers expect two Scorpios who work on those two habits to get along very well.

Is an October Scorpio different from a November Scorpio?

In Mercury, often. In our 1950–2005 date sample, Mercury was back in Libra on 32.1% of October Scorpio dates, while November Scorpio dates had it ahead in Sagittarius 38.7% of the time. Venus in Scorpio itself barely changes with the month. Since astrology links Mercury to the way a person thinks and talks, two Scorpios born weeks apart can share a Sun sign and still process things differently.

What problems do two Scorpios run into?

The usual ones are hinting instead of asking, jealousy between two people who both notice everything, and long standoffs, since two fixed signs rarely back down once they've decided what happened. After a real betrayal, both tend to go quiet and wait. Saying the want out loud helps with all of them, and so does a firm rule that neither checks up on the other in secret.
