Scorpio is the sign astrology ties to determination and strong attachments, and to privacy about both. Traditional astrology gives it to Mars and modern astrology to Pluto, and in recent decades the Sun has reached the constellation Scorpius only after Scorpio season ends.
Scorpio traits: what drives a Scorpio
In astrology, Scorpio is fixed water, which means deep feeling that holds its course. You might recognize it in someone who asks you personal questions but takes a while to answer yours. Scorpios tend to commit hard, to people and to goals, and they don't drop either easily.
A Scorpio's curiosity usually centers on motives. Why did someone change their story? What are they avoiding? That attention can be perceptive, and it makes Scorpios good at work that rewards patience and digging, from research to negotiation. It can also turn into suspicion.
The hard part is letting go. An old betrayal can make a new disagreement feel bigger than it is, and quietly testing someone's loyalty tends to go worse than asking them straight out what happened.

Mars or Pluto: who rules Scorpio?
Both, in different traditions. In the Tetrabiblos, Ptolemy gives Mars two signs, "Scorpio and Aries" (Book I, chapter 17), and Mars stayed Scorpio's only ruler for roughly 1,800 years after him. Traditional astrologers call Scorpio Mars's night house: the same drive as Aries, aimed carefully and kept out of sight. Ptolemy also puts the Moon's depression, its weakest sign, in Scorpio. Pluto came into the picture after it was discovered in 1930. Twentieth-century astrologers gave it Scorpio, matching the sign's themes of secrecy and endings to a planet named for the god of the underworld. Modern Western astrologers usually list Pluto as Scorpio's ruler, and many keep Mars as co-ruler. The International Astronomical Union's 2006 decision to call Pluto a dwarf planet hasn't changed its use in astrology.
Scorpio season 2026 to 2028, and the Halloween dip
These times come from NASA's DE440s ephemeris and agree with JPL Horizons within two seconds. Born near the edges? An October 23 birth is still Libra before 5:38 a.m. Eastern in 2026 and before 11:33 a.m. in 2027, and a November 22 birth before 2:23 a.m. in 2026 or 8:16 a.m. in 2027 is still a Scorpio. In 2028 everything moves a day earlier: Scorpio season starts at 5:13 p.m. on October 22 and ends at 1:54 p.m. on November 21.
In Social Security Administration birth counts for 2000 to 2014 (published by FiveThirtyEight), 8.22% of US births fell between October 23 and November 21, almost exactly those dates' 8.21% share of the calendar. October 31 is the odd one out. Halloween averaged 10,263 births, 9.7% below Scorpio's daily average of 11,365, and only ten dates in the year were quieter, all of them around Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's Day or July 4.
A 2011 Yale study of US birth certificates found the same dip, with 5.3% fewer spontaneous births and 16.9% fewer cesarean births on Halloween than in the week on either side. Eclipses skip the sign for a while, too: none falls in Scorpio between the penumbral lunar eclipse of May 5, 2023 and the next one, late on May 6, 2031, Eastern time.

The Sun spends six and a half days in Scorpius
The sign Scorpio and the constellation Scorpius aren't the same thing. The signs of the tropical zodiac, which this site uses, are 30° slices counted from the March equinox. Precession, the slow wobble of Earth's axis, has shifted the constellations roughly a full sign away from them over the last two thousand years.
We calculated when the Sun crosses the official IAU constellation boundaries (Davenhall and Leggett's catalog) in 2026. During Scorpio season the Sun is in front of the stars of Virgo and then Libra. It reaches Scorpius at about 12:27 p.m. EST on November 23, a day and a half after leaving the sign Scorpio, and crosses into Ophiuchus at about 12:40 a.m. on November 30. That's six and a half days, the shortest stay in any constellation on the Sun's path.
The same holds in every year from 1940 to 2030: the Sun reaches Scorpius only after it has left the sign. So nobody born a Scorpio in those years has the Sun among Scorpius's stars.
