Pisces compatibility

Pisces compatibility with all twelve zodiac signs and their ruling planets

Ask which zodiac sign suits a Pisces and most lists give the same answer: Cancer and Scorpio first, Taurus close behind, Gemini and Sagittarius near the bottom. Those lists cover anyone born from about February 19 to March 20, and this guide adds one question to every pairing: whose planet feels at home in Pisces?

In traditional astrology each sign has a ruling planet, and Ptolemy, writing in the second century, gave Pisces an unusually wide spread of planetary ties. Jupiter rules it. Venus is exalted there. Mars and the Moon help govern the water triangle it belongs to, and Mercury is at its weakest in it. So for each partner sign we ask what that sign's own ruler finds when it comes to Pisces: a home, a place of honor, a share of the work, a weak spot, or none of these. We also counted where the planets sat on every date from 1950 to 2005, which shows, for one thing, how rarely Venus turns retrograde under a Pisces Sun.

Cancer and Scorpio, the other water signs, are Pisces's usual best matches, with Taurus next and Capricorn high on sites that give scores. Two Pisces share Jupiter and rate well. Gemini and Sagittarius square Pisces and lead most worst lists, Virgo sits opposite, and Aries, Aquarius, Leo and Libra get mixed reviews. Sagittarius shares Jupiter, Pisces's traditional ruler.

Pisces in relationships at a glance
Dates Usually February 19 to March 20. Anyone born on February 18, February 19 or March 20 needs the birth year and time to be sure
Element and kind Water. Ptolemy called Pisces bicorporeal, a two-bodied sign that closes winter and leans into spring (later astrologers say mutable), and counted it among his night signs
Ruling planet Jupiter in traditional astrology, shared with Sagittarius. Modern astrologers added Neptune after its discovery in 1846
Dignities In Ptolemy's scheme Venus is exalted in Pisces and Mercury is in its depression, his word for what later books call the fall. William Lilly's 1647 tables put Mercury in detriment here as well
Usual best matches Cancer and Scorpio, then Taurus; Capricorn scores high
Usual worst matches Gemini and Sagittarius, then Aries

Venus, Mercury and Mars on Pisces Sun dates

Our date sample holds a noon-UTC chart for every day from 1950 to 2005. The Sun was in Pisces on 1,678 of those dates, about 30 a year, and every share on this page counts dates, not people or couples. A different range of birth years would give different shares.

Venus is exalted in Pisces, and yet it turns retrograde on fewer Pisces Sun dates than on any other sign's. It was retrograde on just 2.3% of Pisces Sun dates in our 1950–2005 sample, 39 of 1,678, the lowest share of the twelve signs. On those dates it was retrograde in Aries or Aquarius, never in Pisces. In fact Venus didn't turn retrograde in Pisces or back into it at any point from 1950 to 2008. It has done so every eight years since 2009, most recently turning direct at 24°37′ Pisces on April 12, 2025.

Mars was retrograde on 13.6% of sampled Pisces Sun dates, second only to Aries among the twelve signs, and on every one of those dates it stood on the far side of the zodiac, in a sign from Cancer to Scorpio. On 40.2% of sampled Pisces Sun dates neither Mercury nor Venus was in Pisces, so neither one was in a water sign at all. And Mercury, Venus and Mars were never all in Pisces together on any Pisces Sun date in our 1950–2005 sample.

With each of the twelve signs, the most common Venus combination puts the Pisces date's Venus in Aries, the fire sign next door. So a Pisces who reads as soft by Sun sign may well love in a quicker, more direct way. When Venus does land in its exaltation, astrologers read Venus in Pisces very differently.

How we calculated the date sample

We calculated Sun, Mercury, Venus and Mars positions at noon UTC on each of the 20,454 calendar dates from 1 January 1950 to 31 December 2005, using PyEphem 4.2.1. Each date has equal weight. Apparent geocentric positions are converted to ecliptic longitude for that date and divided into twelve 30° tropical signs.

We group the dates by Sun sign, then count the share with Mercury, Venus or Mars in each sign. Pair estimates multiply those rounded shares, assuming two independent date draws with no age-gap restriction. For example, 20.5% of Taurus Sun dates and 20.4% of Cancer Sun dates have Venus in the same sign as the Sun: 0.205 × 0.204 × 100 gives about 4.2% for both placements together.

Shares are rounded to one decimal place and may not sum to exactly 100%. For two people with the same Sun sign, reversed Venus combinations are combined. These are frequencies in a date sample, not birth-population statistics or observations of couples. They cannot tell us how people communicate or whether a relationship will last.

Pisces sign compatibility chart, sign by sign

Ptolemy reports that the ancients counted 'Jupiter and Venus, together with the moon, as beneficent' (Tetrabiblos I.5), and all three have standing in Pisces. Jupiter rules the sign and Venus is exalted in it. The water triangle of Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces goes to Mars, with the Moon as co-ruler by night and Venus by day (I.18). Cancer can say the same of all three, so this isn't unique to Pisces.

Count houses, exaltations and the water triangle, and four of the seven traditional planets have standing in Pisces in Ptolemy's scheme. That means seven of its twelve partner signs have a ruler that's welcome there. Two, Gemini and Virgo, have a ruler at its weakest in Pisces, and three, Leo, Capricorn and Aquarius, have a ruler with none of those roles in Pisces.

The lists don't always agree with each other, either. Read on October 19, 2026, AskNebula's Pisces page put Capricorn level with Scorpio at the top of the twelve matches without saying how its percentages are worked out, while the FAQ in mindbodygreen's Pisces guide names Capricorn among the more challenging ones. Each entry below gives what the partner's planet finds in Pisces, how far apart the two signs sit and where most lists put the pairing.

Best match for Pisces: two water trines and two earth sextiles

Count the best-match lists and Scorpio, Cancer and Taurus come up again and again, while Capricorn rates highest on the sites that give scores. Those four are the two trines and the two sextiles, and Ptolemy calls those aspects harmonious because they join signs of the same kind (I.13). All four are night signs like Pisces, so his reason fits them exactly.

Jupiter was given Pisces partly because the sign sits trine to Cancer, the Moon's house, an arrangement Ptolemy calls 'a harmonious and beneficent configuration' (I.17). Add the Moon and Mars governing Pisces's triangle, and Cancer and Scorpio are tied to Pisces by aspect, by element and through their rulers.

The sextiles differ. Taurus's Venus is exalted in Pisces, so that pairing holds up on every count in the old scheme. Capricorn's Saturn has no house, exaltation or share of the triangle in Pisces, which makes Capricorn the one best match the planet reading doesn't back. Its easy sextile is what earns the pairing a good reading here.

That's also the short answer for love, for marriage and for friendship, and it doesn't change for a Pisces man, a Pisces woman or anyone else, since a Pisces Sun reads the same whoever has it. Virgo, the sign opposite, gets its own place among the hard matches below.

The hardest matches for Pisces: Gemini, Sagittarius and the unconnected signs

So what sign does Pisces square? Gemini and Sagittarius, three signs away on either side. Both are day signs and Pisces is a night sign, so Ptolemy's reason for calling a square disharmonious, signs of opposite kinds, fits them. They're also the two names worst lists give most often.

Sagittarius is the puzzle. It shares Jupiter with Pisces and is still a square, which is why one site lists it as a best match and the next as a worst. Astrologers read the shared Jupiter as a common interest in what life means, and the square as two different ways of going after it. Gemini has no such tie. Its ruler, Mercury, is at its weakest in Pisces.

Virgo, the opposite sign, is a night sign like Pisces, so the kind-against-kind reason doesn't apply. What the two share instead is a crossing of planets: Venus is exalted in Pisces and depressed in Virgo, and Mercury the other way round (I.19). In astrology the opposite sign is the one you're most drawn to and most often argue with, and for these two the argument is usually about effort.

Then come the signs with no aspect at all. Ptolemy's I.16 counts signs one or five apart as disjunct, which covers Aquarius and Aries next door and Leo and Libra five signs away. Leo and Aquarius stay disjunct on every reading. Aries and Libra are read both ways: disjunct on I.16's plain wording and in the Loeb editor's notes, yet tied to Pisces, counted from the equinox and the solstice, by the reasons Ptolemy gives for equal rising times (Aries) and equal days (Libra).

Who should a Pisces avoid, then? On these grounds, nobody. With Gemini or Sagittarius, say early which version of events or beliefs you're each working from. With Virgo, agree what rest looks like before anyone keeps score. And with the four unconnected signs, look at Venus and Mercury before deciding you've nothing in common.

Mercury, Venus and Neptune: what a birth date adds to the Pisces lists

Mercury and Venus never stray far from the Sun, so a Pisces birthday limits them. On a Pisces Sun date Mercury is in Aquarius, Pisces or Aries, and Venus in one of five signs from Capricorn to Taurus. So a couple's two Venus signs often differ even when their Sun signs sit close, and a Venus sign lookup for each partner's birth date shows which two you're comparing.

Neptune, Pisces's modern ruler, moves too slowly to tell apart two Pisces born the same year. From 2012 to 2025 the Sun passed exactly over Neptune inside Pisces once a year, two or three days later each time, from February 19, 2012 at 0° Pisces to March 19, 2025 at 29°. Whether Jupiter or Neptune should count as Pisces's ruler is a longer story, and the sign page tells it.

Uranus in Gemini squares Pisces degree for degree. By the end of 2030 it will have squared the Sun's exact degree on 76.0% of sampled Pisces Sun dates, and by the end of 2031 on 90.8%, the February birthdays first, so two Pisces partners born a few weeks apart can meet it years apart.

All of this assumes the Sun really was in Pisces. Pisces season's first and last days shift from year to year, and the Aquarius and Aries pairings in the chart above take the two edges. For any one birthday, a Big 3 check with birth time and place settles the Sun along with the Moon and rising signs.

Pisces in love and marriage: soulmate picks, twin flames and the long run

Who should a Pisces marry, going by the lists? Scorpio, Cancer and Taurus are the three that marriage.com's guide (updated June 18, 2026) picks, and the same three fill most soulmate lists. mindbodygreen is the odd one out, picking Virgo, the opposite sign, as the soulmate. Twin flames are a modern idea, and no classical source assigns one to any sign, Pisces included.

For the long run, astrologers look past the Sun pair to the Saturn and Moon contacts between two charts, the ones they read for staying power and everyday comfort. Treat any list, this one included, as a place to start, never a forecast.

Love and sex, in astrology, sit with Venus and Mars more than with the Sun. Venus is the planet Ptolemy exalts in Pisces, and in synastry astrologers check whether one person's Venus touches the other's Moon or Jupiter, the contacts they read for tenderness. They also check whether either chart's Neptune sits on the other's Venus, the classic sign of idealizing a partner. Comparing two complete birth charts lists those contacts in both directions, and with birth times it shows which houses they fall in. For the desire side, Mars in a Pisces chart has its own guide.

Friends, siblings and coworkers: who adapts back to a Pisces?

Pisces gets cast as the friend who adjusts to everyone's mood, the one people call first when something goes wrong. The better question is who adjusts back.

A Cancer or Scorpio friend often understands before anything's explained, which makes it tempting to leave things unsaid. A Taurus or Capricorn friend tends to turn talk into plans, so check that you both wanted one.

Between siblings, astrologers expect the water and earth signs to find each other easiest and the square signs, Gemini and Sagittarius, to argue back. A Pisces parent may think they know why a child is upset before a word is said, and letting the child explain first is the habit worth building. At work, Pisces is often the first to notice who's struggling. Agree early who raises it with the person, so the noticing doesn't turn into quietly covering for them.

Family ties are where the Moon sign matters most in astrology, and a birth date alone often can't fix it. How two Moon signs fit together explains the pairings, and a free birth chart run with the birth time shows where each person's Moon actually is.

Pisces compatibility questions

What sign does Pisces get along with best?

Cancer and Scorpio, by the count of published lists, with Taurus close behind and Capricorn high on the sites that give scores. Cancer and Scorpio are the water trines, and their rulers, the Moon and Mars, both help govern Pisces's element in Ptolemy's scheme. Taurus and Capricorn are the earth sextiles.

What sign does Pisces square?

Gemini and Sagittarius, the signs three places away on either side. Ptolemy called the square disharmonious because it joins signs of opposite kinds, and astrologers read it as friction that keeps two people engaged. With Gemini the friction tends to be over facts against feelings, and with Sagittarius over belief, though Sagittarius also shares Jupiter, Pisces's traditional ruler, which is why some lists rate it highly.

Which sign makes the best friend for a Pisces?

Bustle's sign guide (updated February 20, 2024) picks reliable Taurus for Pisces friendship, the friend who can give comfort and emotional support. The other usual answer is a fellow water sign, Cancer or Scorpio.
