Sign pair guide
Leo and Pisces compatibility: one comes alive at breakfast, the other after midnight
Monday, 6:15 a.m. The Leo has been up for half an hour, coffee made, and wants to talk through the week while it still feels fresh. The Pisces is asleep, and with reason. They didn't drop off until 1:30, after lying awake going over the conversation they'd hoped to have all evening, the one the Leo was too tired for at eleven. Each has offered their best hour, and each time the other was asleep or only half there.
Either of you may be the night owl; in this couple it's the Pisces. Most guides to Leo and Pisces compatibility start with fire and water. For this couple the clock matters more. Pisces and Leo can love each other and still keep missing each other's best hour, so the real question is a practical one. Can a day person and a night person share a life?
Leo and Pisces compatibility is often rated low in astrology lists, since the signs are five apart and share no element. Their traditional rulers tell a warmer story: in Ptolemy, the Sun and Jupiter split the fire signs by day and night. The pair works best when two different daily rhythms get one shared hour on purpose.

Some signs couldn't be confirmed
A date alone doesn't tell us the birth time or time zone, so we allow extra room around each position. Here that allowance covers two signs, which doesn't mean the planet changed signs that day. Both candidates are shown and this pair is left uninterpreted. The birth chart calculator opens empty, so you can enter either person's details.

Strangers by sign, partners by ruler
Count from Leo to Pisces and you get five signs, a gap Ptolemy gives no aspect to. He calls such signs 'disjunct' and 'alien', without any of the familiarities he lists, and sets the five-apart gap against the true aspects, which 'make an equal division of the perimeter' (Tetrabiblos I.16). The modern name is a quincunx, and it often gets mixed up with an opposition. Leo's opposite is Aquarius.
The signs share little else. Leo is a fire sign and Pisces a water sign, and Leo is one of Ptolemy's day signs where Pisces is a night sign (I.12). The rulers are another matter. Leo's ruler is the Sun. Pisces belongs to Jupiter in traditional astrology and to Neptune in modern astrology. And Ptolemy puts those two rulers on the same side of the day: 'the sun and Jupiter diurnal' (I.7). Both are day planets, even though Pisces is a night sign.
They share a job, too. Ptolemy gives Leo's own element, the fire triangle, to the Sun and Jupiter: 'The sun assumes first governance of it by day and Jupiter by night' (I.18). So in Leo's own element, Pisces's ruler governs by night. The Sun has no part in Pisces's water triangle, which Ptolemy gives to Mars, sharing it with Venus by day and the Moon by night. In Ptolemy's scheme, then, these are strangers by sign whose rulers keep one fire going in shifts.
Their rising times differ too. By our calculation for New York's latitude, Leo takes about 2 hours 33 minutes of the sky's turn to rise and Pisces about 1 hour 11 minutes, more than twice as long for Leo. That's geometry at one latitude, and it says nothing about when either of you sleeps. For Pisces's trines, squares and neighbors, see each of the twelve Pisces matches.
Mercury five signs apart, and talk that needs translating
A Leo date and a Pisces date never share a Mercury sign or a Venus sign in our sample. Mercury, the planet of talk, tends instead to repeat the Suns' own gap. The two Mercury signs sit five signs apart in 47.7% of modeled pairs of dates, and share an element in 14.7%.
Take one possible case, a Leo with Mercury in Virgo beside a Pisces with Mercury in Pisces. One asks what needs doing; the other wants to say first why it matters. Before answering, each can ask what kind of conversation this is: a decision, a story or a chance to let off steam. That way nobody answers the wrong one.
The Leo and Pisces comparison above shows which Mercury signs you actually have. With a birth time, a full birth chart with houses also shows where each Mercury falls.

Most common Venus pairings in this model: Virgo with Aries (11.7%), Virgo with Aquarius (10.5%), Cancer with Aries (9.1%). Venus signs are listed in Leo Sun, then Pisces Sun order. Mars can occupy any sign with either Sun sign. The most frequent Mars signs on sampled Leo dates are Leo (17.7%), Cancer (14%), Virgo (13.5%), Libra (11.9%), and on Pisces dates Aries (13.3%), Taurus (12.3%), Capricorn (11.6%), Pisces (10.8%).
Our Mercury, Venus and Mars counts use one noon UTC chart for each of the 20,454 days between January 1, 1950, and December 31, 2005. For a pair figure, a Leo Sun date and a Pisces Sun date are drawn separately and compared, so the result describes skies, not anyone's sleep habits.
Finding the hours you share
Back to Monday morning. Nobody did anything wrong. The Leo offered the best hour of the day, the Pisces had offered theirs the night before, and each time the other was running on empty. In this example both want the conversation. They haven't found an hour when both can stay with it.
Start by naming each person's best hour, as plainly as you'd say you're left-handed. Then agree on one window that works for both, maybe eight to half past nine in the evening, and treat it as the slot for anything that matters: money, family, the thing that's been nagging at you. Hard conversations never go at the other person's worst hour, so no big talks at 6:15 a.m. and none at 1:30 either.
Then give each clock a night of its own. The late talker gets one evening a week when the other stays up, and the early talker gets one unhurried breakfast. Neither rhythm is a flaw for the other to fix. Conflict style differs too. Leo is a fixed sign in modern terms and tends to want a problem out and settled tonight. Pisces is mutable and tends to go quiet, then come back to it a day later. A Pisces who says 'still thinking' before going quiet saves the Leo from reading the silence as indifference.
Love, sex and a warm Sun beside an exalted Venus
The pull often starts in one exchange. The Leo tells a funny story about a big day, and the Pisces asks about the part the Leo skipped, the nerves the night before. Few people catch that. The Leo answers by saying plainly, in front of friends, that it mattered, and a Pisces who has spent the week soaking up other people's moods finds warmth said out loud restful.
Venus is exalted in Pisces in Ptolemy's scheme, and a Pisces Venus, if they have one, gives freely. The Leo side is less showy than the stereotype. On Leo birthdays Venus turns up in Virgo or Cancer more often than in Leo itself, so the Leo you're with may show love by doing things for you before announcing anything.
In bed, ask what makes each of you feel wanted. A Leo often wants to hear it and see it, while a Pisces may need more time before saying what they like. And a Leo who enjoys affection in public may be with a Pisces who saves it for home. Mars was in Pisces on only 3.6% of sampled Leo Sun dates, so a Leo rarely has the slow, mood-led Mars that sign is known for. See where Mars was for each of you, then talk about pace and time of day without treating either as the right one.
The brunch friend and the 1 a.m. friend
A Leo and Pisces friendship can work well. The Leo brings plans, loyalty and a good time. The Pisces brings patience, a long memory for what matters to people and the late phone call nobody else would pick up. The snag is the same clock problem: one wants Saturday brunch, the other wants the call at 1 a.m. Decide which slot belongs to the friendship, and stop hearing the other one as a no.
In families, a Leo parent may want a Pisces child up, out and on stage at the recital, while the child needs a quiet hour afterward. Give them both. A Pisces parent can read a Leo child's moods well and should still clap loudly, because the Leo child is listening for it. Leo and Pisces siblings may split the house into day and night territory, which works fine as long as nobody gets woken. At work, split the jobs out loud: who leads the meeting, and who follows up afterward with the people who didn't speak.
Marriage, and a life run on two clocks
A long marriage is well within reach for this pair, whatever the low scores say. Those scores come from the basics: the signs share no element, kind or sect, and no aspect in Ptolemy links them. What helps most is structure: the shared hour, a night each, and the habit of saying 'that's my bad time' without apologizing for it. Their everyday strength is generosity, the Leo with praise and presence, the Pisces with time and forgiveness. Watch only that it runs both ways, so one of you isn't always choosing the plans while the other makes room.
What a Sun-sign page can't show is who in the couple was born by day. Traditional astrologers call it a day chart when the Sun was above the horizon at birth, which puts it in the top half of a chart's house wheel, and a night chart when it was below. With birth times you can see which of you is which, and whether the Leo's Sun touches the Pisces's Moon or the Pisces's Sun touches the Leo's Moon. Astrologers read those Sun and Moon contacts for whether two daily rhythms fit. A two-chart synastry comparison lists them in both directions, and a Leo Sun with a Pisces Moon beside it is a different reading again. For the Moon and rising signs alone, each person's Big 3 comes from birth date, time and place.
Flip the clocks: a Pisces at dawn, a Leo at midnight
Swap the roles. Now the Pisces is up at six and the Leo does their best talking after midnight. Give the Leo Mercury in Leo and the Pisces Mercury in Pisces, so their Mercury signs repeat the Suns' five-sign gap.
At half past twelve the Leo wants to tell the story of the week with a beginning, a high point and a verdict. The Pisces, half asleep, hears it as a mood and answers the mood. At six the Pisces wants to say something delicate before the day starts, and the Leo, still asleep, answers with a grunt that sounds like a ruling.
The swap moves the shared window. With the Leo as the night talker, they settle on seven to half past eight, straight after dinner, while the Pisces still has energy and before the Leo hits full stride. The Pisces brings the delicate thing to that hour instead of six a.m., and the Leo puts the phone away for it.

Leo and Pisces questions
What does a Leo see in a Pisces?
Someone who notices. A Pisces tends to pick up the feeling under a Leo's story, the nerves or the hurt covered with confidence, and responds to that instead of the performance. Leos also like a partner with imagination who doesn't compete for the room. Traditional astrology adds a reason of its own, since the Sun and Jupiter, the two signs' rulers, are both day planets that share the fire signs.
Why do Leo and Pisces get rated so low?
Because on paper they share almost nothing. They're five signs apart with no Ptolemaic aspect, a fire sign beside a water sign, a day sign beside a night sign. When we checked on October 19, 2026, zodiacsign.com scored the pair 14%, and a 2022 Woman's World list put Leo among Pisces's worst matches. The zodiacsign.com reasons rest on Neptune, Pisces's modern ruler, which the site says falls in Leo. It doesn't mention the Sun and Jupiter, which share the fire signs in Ptolemy's scheme, and no score can say how a particular couple arranges its days.
Is Leo a good friend for a Pisces?
Usually, yes. A Leo friend is loyal, turns up and says good things about you to other people, and a Pisces friend listens without keeping score. The friction is timing and volume: the Leo wants the party, the Pisces the late, quiet call. Settle on one standing plan that suits both, a Sunday walk, say, and the friendship tends to hold.
