Sign pair guide
Virgo and Pisces compatibility: one rests by stopping, the other by finishing
The Pisces has kept the day off empty on purpose: no plans, phone in a drawer, a novel, maybe a nap around two. The Virgo means well and starts on the gutters, then the hall closet, then a run to the hardware store for a hinge, stopping by the couch now and then with 'if you're free later, we could…'. By four o'clock the Pisces feels watched and the Virgo feels alone with the house.
The awkward part is admitting what each thinks the other meant. Pisces and Virgo sit opposite each other on the zodiac wheel, and one place that shows is in how each of them rests. One rests by stopping. The other rests by finishing things, and can't settle while a job is half done.
Virgo and Pisces compatibility usually gets a warm reading: opposite signs, both mutable, each good at what the other skips. The friction starts small. One of you rests by stopping and the other by finishing jobs, and each can take the other's rest as a comment on their own.

Some signs couldn't be confirmed
A date alone doesn't tell us the birth time or time zone, so we allow extra room around each position. Here that allowance covers two signs, which doesn't mean the planet changed signs that day. Both candidates are shown and this pair is left uninterpreted. The birth chart calculator opens empty, so you can enter either person's details.

Opposite signs that trade strengths
When we read them on October 19, 2026, zodiacsign.com, jobcannon and asknebula all scored Virgo and Pisces well above the middle of their scales. The older case rests on balance more than ease. Virgo faces Pisces across the zodiac wheel, an opposition, which Ptolemy explains in one line: it 'causes the signs to meet on one straight line' (Tetrabiblos I.13). He files oppositions as disharmonious because they join signs of opposite kinds. Yet six signs on from any sign you always land on the same kind, so his reason never really works for an opposition. Here both are night signs, and like every opposite pair they share a modality: both are two-bodied, the kind modern astrology calls mutable. Virgo is an earth sign, Pisces belongs to the water element, and modern astrologers call pairs directly across the wheel 'sister signs'.
Ptolemy also sets their planets against each other. He makes Pisces the sign where Venus is exalted and Virgo the sign where it is depressed, then builds Mercury's placement as the reverse: Mercury, 'on the contrary … by contrast naturally is exalted, as it were, in Virgo', and is depressed in Pisces (I.19). Each sign is strong where the other is weak. Astrologers read Venus as pleasure and ease and Mercury as tasks, lists and words, so in modern terms the trade reads as a couple in which one partner is good at stopping and the other at getting things done.
The rulers follow the same pattern. Virgo is ruled by Mercury, and Pisces by Jupiter in traditional astrology, with Neptune added in modern charts. In William Lilly's 1647 tables each ruler is uncomfortable in the other's sign: Jupiter is in detriment in Virgo, and Mercury is in detriment in Pisces.
Even the daylight is split between them. With the Sun at 15° Virgo, New York gets 12 hours 49 minutes of daylight, and at 15° Pisces 11 hours 28 minutes, by our calculation, so each sign's day is roughly the other's night. The two signs also rise at very different speeds, yet by our calculation their rising times always add up to the same 55.8 degrees of the sky's turn, anywhere both signs rise and set, which is everywhere outside the far Arctic and Antarctic. Up there, part of one sign never sets and part of the other never rises.
Mercury in Virgo meets Mercury in Pisces
The commonest Mercury pairing for a Virgo date and a Pisces date is the textbook one, Mercury in Virgo with Mercury in Pisces, in 24.9% of modeled pairs of dates in our 1950–2005 sample. It's the trade above, repeated in the planet of talk, with Mercury at its strongest on one side and its weakest on the other. Day to day, the Virgo tends to say what needs doing in plain steps, and the Pisces tends to hear the mood behind the steps before the steps themselves. Gemini, the other sign Mercury rules, has its own page with Pisces, built on Mercury's weak sign.
Run both birth dates through the sign comparison at the top of this page to see each Mercury sign, or open a free birth chart for Mercury's house as well if you know the birth time. Venus is simpler. It never shared a sign between a Virgo date and a Pisces date in our sample, since it can't stray far enough from two Suns half a zodiac apart.
Mars ranges further, and here the opposition leaves an odd mark. Mars in Virgo was the rarest Mars sign on Pisces Sun dates in our 1950–2005 sample, 3.8%, and on all 63 of those dates Mars was retrograde. The 61 Virgo Sun dates with Mars in Pisces had Mars retrograde too. That's sky geometry. Mars reaches the sign opposite the Sun only around its opposition, when it appears to move backward, and the same holds for every Sun sign. It says nothing about anybody's energy. If the pace of the relationship is what puzzles you, look up both Mars signs, or read about the Mars in Virgo placement.

Most common Venus pairings in this model: Leo with Aries (10.2%), Leo with Aquarius (9.2%), Libra with Aries (8.7%). Venus signs are listed in Virgo Sun, then Pisces Sun order. Mars can occupy any sign with either Sun sign. The most frequent Mars signs on sampled Virgo dates are Virgo (17%), Leo (16.1%), Libra (12.3%), Scorpio (12.1%), and on Pisces dates Aries (13.3%), Taurus (12.3%), Capricorn (11.6%), Pisces (10.8%).
Each date figure reads the Sun, Mercury, Venus and Mars at noon UTC, once a day for 20,454 days (January 1, 1950, to December 31, 2005). A pair figure puts one Virgo Sun date beside one Pisces Sun date, each picked independently: a count of sky combinations, not of observed couples.
Rest that doesn't have to be earned
Back to the day off. The Virgo wasn't cleaning at the Pisces, and the Pisces wasn't lying on the couch to make a point. But a day off can start to feel like something you have to earn, and when one person is up a ladder the other's nap looks like a verdict. It runs the other way too. Someone who's finally sat down can hear every clank from the garage as a reproach.
Check the workload first. If the jobs really are lopsided, split them. If they're fair and one of you still feels judged for sitting down, the question is permission. The same goes for advice: if a Virgo's 'you could just…' lands as criticism, the Pisces says so that day, not weeks later in a list. A few habits help:
- Once the shared jobs are covered, announce a day off instead of justifying it. Nobody has to invent an errand to earn it.
- The busy partner takes one hour with no tasks, in the same room as the one resting. Reading counts.
- The resting partner joins one job by choice, and picks which one.
- Drop the 'must be nice' remarks and the sighing at the ladder. If you're doing extra work, name the job that needs sharing.
Why each falls for the other, and what bed is like
The pull often starts with a small rescue. The Virgo has the flat bike tire pumped before the Pisces has finished explaining how it went flat, and later the Pisces sits through the Virgo's long account of a bad day without once saying what should have been done. Each gets something they rarely get: help without asking, and a hearing without a grade.
In bed the same trade applies. Venus exalted in Pisces and depressed in Virgo gives astrologers a contrast to work with: enjoying the moment against checking that it's going well. Take that loosely. A Virgo partner often shows desire through attention, by learning exactly what the other likes and getting it right, and a Pisces through mood, wanting closeness to feel unhurried and a little unguarded. Most Pisces Suns don't have Venus in Pisces, though; it's more often in Aries or Aquarius. Find both Venus signs from the two birthdays before deciding who's the careful one, and compare a Venus in Virgo reading with one for Venus in Pisces. Then ask, rather than assume, what each of you wants on a given night.
Virgo and Pisces as friends, parents and siblings
As friends they suit each other well. One turns up at the beach with sunscreen, snacks and a plan for the afternoon; the other wants to lie on a towel until the light goes. It works as long as both agree that doing nothing counts as doing something. Both are mutable signs, the adjusting kind, so a rained-out plan can suit them fine, as long as neither has quietly spent hours preparing for it.
In families the same split turns up early. A Virgo parent with a Pisces child may need to leave unplanned hours in the week and treat a long daydream as time well spent. A Pisces parent with a Virgo child may need to offer more structure than feels natural, such as a clear plan for the day and promises kept to the minute. Virgo and Pisces siblings often end up with set family jobs, one running the errands and the other hearing everyone out, and it's worth asking now and then whether either is tired of theirs. At work the pairing is useful too, with the Virgo catching the details and the Pisces reading the room, as long as the credit is shared.
Will Virgo and Pisces last, and what two charts add
A long marriage suits this pair, mainly because both can change plans, roles and minds without a standoff. The risk is the slow kind: one partner turning into the household's manager and the other into its guest, often because both signs are quick to help and slow to ask for help back. Swap now and then. Let the Pisces plan a weekend, and let the Virgo take an afternoon off without making up for it later. Sun signs set the theme, but they don't decide how any particular couple does.
Then look past the Sun signs. Does the Virgo's Mercury actually aspect the Pisces's Venus? That's the contact that shows how one person's planning sits with the other's way of enjoying things. Does the Pisces's Neptune touch the Virgo's Mercury, softening how the Virgo thinks or muddling it? Both can run in either direction, and with birth times you can also see whose planets fall in the other's sixth or twelfth house, the modern houses of routine and retreat. Synastry, read one contact at a time, is the next step, and Pisces's eleven other pairings show how this opposite compares with the rest.
Gutters, a closet and the Pisces's Venus
Keep the Sun signs and the day off, and change only the Pisces's Venus.
With Venus in Pisces, where Ptolemy puts the planet at full strength, the empty day is the whole point: the novel, the nap, nothing on the calendar. The ladder and the drill sound like noise in a room that was meant to be quiet, and 'if you're free later' sounds like a list with a smile on it.
With Venus in Aries, the Pisces may rest by doing something instead, a long bike ride and a swim, and come home at four to find the Virgo still up the ladder. Now the Pisces is the one who had a good day and the Virgo the one left with the house, and nobody was lying on the couch at all. Both versions end with the same decision: the gutters wait until Sunday morning, and they do them together in an hour.

Virgo and Pisces questions
What makes Virgo and Pisces sister signs?
'Sister signs' is a modern name for two signs directly opposite each other, and Virgo and Pisces sit six apart. Ptolemy's word is opposition. Like every opposite pair they share a modality and are both day signs or both night signs; here that means two mutable night signs. And Ptolemy sets their planets against each other: Venus is strongest in Pisces and weakest in Virgo, Mercury the reverse.
How does a Virgo parent get along with a Pisces child?
Well, as long as the parent watches how the child takes correction. The Virgo parent sees what needs doing and wants it done properly, and the Pisces child often needs time with no point to it, to draw, wander or stare out of a window. Protect some of that time, praise effort as well as results, and explain rules with reasons. If the child hears 'that needs fixing' as 'you've let me down', name the one thing to change and leave their character out of it.
Why does Pisces seem lazy to Virgo?
Because they rest in opposite ways. A Virgo often relaxes by finishing things, so a Pisces lying still with jobs undone can look like avoidance. For the Pisces, stopping completely is the rest. Ptolemy puts Venus, the planet of ease, at full strength in Pisces and Mercury, the planet of tasks, at its weakest, and the reverse in Virgo. Ask what the other is resting from before judging how.
