Sign pair guide
Cancer and Virgo compatibility: two caretakers and the list nobody sees
Somebody in every home keeps the list. The dentist on Thursday, the friend whose surgery is next week, the fact that the olive oil is nearly gone. Put a Cancer and a Virgo under one roof and you often get two people who both keep that list, and who both assume the other one is fine. That shared habit says more about Cancer and Virgo compatibility than any score.
Astrology gives this pair one of its friendliest readings. Water and earth, two signs apart, both happiest when they're useful to someone they love. So the questions worth asking a Virgo and Cancer couple are practical ones. Who notices? Who gets looked after? And who looks after you when you're both exhausted?
Cancer and Virgo compatibility is one of the easier matches in astrology: water and earth, two signs apart in a sextile, and both natural caretakers. The weak spot is quiet. One person ends up carrying the household's memory and the looking after, and it goes unseen until they're worn out. Share that load openly and this pair is steady.

Some signs couldn't be confirmed
A date alone doesn't tell us the birth time or time zone, so we allow extra room around each position. Here that allowance covers two signs, which doesn't mean the planet changed signs that day. Both candidates are shown and this pair is left uninterpreted. The birth chart calculator opens empty, so you can enter either person's details.
Check the placement with birth time and placeThis tool compares Sun, Mercury, Venus and Mars signs. It doesn't calculate Moon compatibility or exact aspects, and rising sign and houses need a birth time and place.
Compatibility Check requires a free account. You can save your birth details there and enter the other person's details. This comparison isn't saved to a profile. Deep Compatibility requires Pro and complete profiles for both people.

Why astrology calls this an easy match
Virgo sits two signs after Cancer, a sextile. Ptolemy counts the sextile among the harmonious configurations because it joins signs of the same kind, and both of these are feminine signs in his scheme (Tetrabiblos I.13). Modern astrologers put it more simply: water signs get along with the earth signs.
The older system adds a second link. Among the triplicity rulers, the Moon, Cancer's planet, helps rule Virgo's earth group by night (Tetrabiblos I.18). Mercury, Virgo's ruler, is also exalted in Virgo (I.19). So Cancer's planet has a foothold in Virgo's territory, while Virgo's planet is at its strongest in its own sign.
In everyday terms the reading is simple. Cancer feels first and wants the people around them safe. Virgo notices what's broken and quietly fixes it. Both read affection as action, so they understand each other's way of caring faster than most pairs do.
The list nobody sees
Here is the scene this pair knows. A Cancer partner remembers that Virgo's mother has a hospital appointment and sends a message the night before. A Virgo partner notices the boiler is making a noise and books someone before it breaks. Each of them is running a list in their head, and each list is invisible to the other.
Two list keepers can work beautifully. The trouble starts when one list gets longer. Maybe Cancer is tracking every birthday, every family mood and every friend in crisis, while Virgo handles bills and repairs. Neither job is small, and neither person asks for help, because asking feels like failing at the thing they're good at.
Then comes the moment one of them says, out of nowhere, "I do everything around here." The other is honestly shocked, because from where they stand they also do everything. They're both right. What's missing is a list they can both see.
Love and sex between two careful people
The early stage can be slow. Both signs tend to wait to be sure before they show their hand, so a first date can stretch into weeks of friendly messages before anyone names what's happening. That caution pays off later. Once they've decided, both are loyal and attentive.
Sex between these two tends to build on trust. Neither sign usually wants a performance; both respond to attention, consistency and a partner who remembers what they like. The catch is asking. Two people used to looking after others can fall into giving and never quite saying what they'd like, so make asking a habit, in bed and out of it.
Their Venus and Mars signs carry more of the detail than the Suns. A Cancer Sun has Venus in its own Sun sign on only 20.4% of sampled dates, and a Virgo Sun has Venus in Virgo on 24.8%, so the tender Cancer lover and the meticulous Virgo one are two possibilities among several. Mars in Virgo, the patient and skilled Mars of the textbooks, turns up on 17.0% of Virgo Sun dates. The Venus sign calculator settles the Venus half from a birth date.
Affection outside the bedroom matters just as much here. A cup of tea brought without asking, a coat taken to the cleaner's, a text that says "I remembered". For Cancer and Virgo those small acts are the romance.
Where Cancer and Virgo clash
Most fights in this pair are about withdrawal. When Cancer is hurt, they tend to retreat and wait to be noticed. When Virgo is stressed, they get busy, and busy can look exactly like distant. So Cancer reads a full to-do list as "you don't care", and Virgo reads a quiet partner as one more problem to solve.
Then there's Virgo's eye for detail. Picture Cancer cooking for friends, and Virgo saying, kindly, that the sauce needed salt and the table was a bit crowded. Virgo meant it as help. Cancer heard that the evening, and the effort, fell short, and goes quiet for the rest of the night. Two small habits fix most of this: Virgo asks "do you want advice or just company?" before offering any, and Cancer says "that stung" on the night instead of three weeks later.
They also talk differently. Cancer often hints and expects the hint to be caught; Virgo takes words literally and answers the question that was asked. "I'm fine" from Cancer can mean the opposite, and Virgo will believe it. Say the plain version, even when it feels exposing.
Cardinal Cancer likes to start things and mutable Virgo likes to improve them, so a redecorating plan can feel taken over once Virgo starts refining it. A short "this part is yours, this part is mine" heads off a lot of it.
The Mercury mismatch hiding inside an easy pair
Mercury, Virgo's ruler, is the planet astrologers read for how people talk and think, and it never strays far from the Sun. In our 1950–2005 date sample, Mercury on Cancer Sun dates was always in Cancer, Leo or Gemini, and on Virgo Sun dates always in Virgo, Libra or Leo. A Cancer Sun never had an earth Mercury, and a Virgo Sun never had a water one.
So their Mercury signs share an element in only 11.8% of modeled pairs, the lowest of any pairing in the Cancer compatibility guide. That happens only when both Mercuries are in Leo, or one is in Gemini and the other in Libra. The most common combination is still Mercury in each person's own Sun sign, at 23.7% of modeled pairs, which keeps the sextile between them. Different elements, then, at a friendly angle.
Venus is looser. Both people have Venus in their own Sun sign in 5.1% of pairs, and the single most frequent Venus pairing is Gemini for the Cancer date with Leo for the Virgo date, at 10.5%. A Cancer Sun has Venus in Virgo on 9.7% of sampled dates; a Virgo Sun has Venus in Cancer on 8.6%.
These count chart positions, not couples, so they can't say who stays together. They do tell you to check before you assume. Each person's birth chart shows their own Mercury and Venus signs.
The Cancer and Virgo date-sample estimates

Most common Venus pairings in this model: Gemini with Leo (10.5%), Gemini with Libra (9%), Gemini with Virgo (8.6%). Venus signs are listed in Cancer Sun, then Virgo Sun order. Mars can occupy any sign with either Sun sign. The most frequent Mars signs on sampled Cancer dates are Cancer (16.9%), Leo (15.1%), Gemini (11.8%), Virgo (11.4%), and on Virgo dates Virgo (17%), Leo (16.1%), Libra (12.3%), Scorpio (12.1%).
We calculated Sun, Mercury, Venus and Mars at noon UTC for every calendar day from 1 January 1950 to 31 December 2005 (20,454 days), giving each date equal weight. Pair percentages combine independent dates from the Cancer and Virgo Sun groups using rounded placement frequencies. This models possible chart combinations. It is not a survey of births or couples and holds no data about personality or how relationships turn out.
Cancer and Virgo as friends
As friends these two are the ones everyone else calls in an emergency. The hard part is getting started, because neither likes to make the first move. Two reserved people can like each other for months at work or in a class without ever suggesting a coffee.
A standing plan solves it. A walk every other Sunday, a shared allotment, a monthly dinner on the same night: once the plan exists, nobody has to be brave enough to ask. And because both are good at noticing, the friendship tends to deepen quietly into the kind where one of you turns up with soup without being asked.
Do Cancer and Virgo last?
They can, and astrology counts Virgo among Cancer's better long-term matches. Both signs value loyalty, a settled home and keeping promises, which is most of what a marriage runs on. When this pair does break up, the usual story isn't a dramatic fight. It's slow resentment from one person carrying more of the looking after, and not saying so until it's late.
Money and family tend to be easy to agree on, because both like a buffer in the bank and a plan for the people they look after. The friction is in standards: how clean is clean, how much help a relative should get, whose turn it is to host. Settle those early, in writing, and the rest gets simpler.
- Write the list down. A shared note of appointments, birthdays and bills shows who carries what.
- Swap one job a month. Each of you learns what the other's list really involves.
- Ask for care directly. "Can you make dinner tonight, I'm done in" is allowed.
- Name the retreat. Say "I'm quiet because I'm tired, not because of you" so the other doesn't have to guess.
- Decide who owns a plan. The person who starts it keeps the final say on the parts they care about.
Same sextile, two Mercury conversations
Take two made-up couples. In the first, the Cancer Sun has Mercury in Cancer and the Virgo Sun has Mercury in Virgo, the most common combination in our model. A reading would describe one person who talks from memory and feeling and another who talks in lists and specifics. They can still meet, but one may say "I just want you to know how I feel" while the other replies with a plan.
In the second couple, both Mercuries are in Leo, which happens in about 4.8% of modeled pairs (33.1% of Cancer dates times 14.5% of Virgo dates). Now the reading has two people who talk warmly and directly, and who may both want the last word. Put two real birth dates into the calculator above to see which couple you are.

Cancer and Virgo questions
Is Cancer and Virgo a good love match?
In astrology, yes. They form a sextile, water and earth support each other, and both signs show love through practical care. The usual problem is unspoken needs: two givers who rarely ask for anything back. It works best when both say plainly who's carrying what.
Why are Virgos attracted to Cancers?
Astrologers usually point to warmth. Virgo spends a lot of energy keeping things in order, and Cancer offers comfort without asking Virgo to be perfect first. Cancer also notices the effort Virgo puts in, which Virgo rarely gets thanked for. Your own Venus and Moon signs say more about what you're drawn to than the Sun pairing does.
If Cancer and Virgo fight, who wins?
Usually nobody, because the fight rarely happens out loud. Cancer tends to go quiet and hope to be noticed; Virgo tends to get busy, cleaning something or working late. The useful move is to have the argument, calmly and early, before both of you have spent a week being polite about it.
Do Virgo and Cancer break up often?
There are no reliable breakup statistics by Sun sign, so nobody can give you a rate. When a Virgo and Cancer couple does split, the usual story is slow resentment over unequal care rather than one big blowup. Naming the uneven workload early, then agreeing who takes what over, is the fix.
