Why Ptolemy called Gemini and Cancer disjunct
Modern sites call adjacent signs a semisextile. Ptolemy didn't count it at all. In Tetrabiblos I.16 he calls signs that share none of his listed relationships 'disjunct', and neighbours like Gemini and Cancer are among them. So the classical answer to 'are Gemini and Cancer compatible?' is that the Sun signs simply don't speak to each other.
The personal planets tell another story. Gemini and Cancer often carry Venus or Mercury in each other's signs, and people in this pairing often point to it when they describe a pull the textbook says shouldn't be there. Gemini is ruled by Mercury, the planet of messages, and Cancer by the Moon, the planet of home and private feeling. One sign collects news; the next one along decides what's safe to keep.
What stays between you
A lot of Gemini and Cancer friction is about where information goes. A screenshot sent to a friend for advice. A funny story about your partner told at a dinner party. Arguments follow a known pattern too. Cancer withdraws to process. By the time Cancer is ready to talk, Gemini has often moved on and is surprised the issue is still alive. Born June 20, 21 or 22? Check the Sun first
The Gemini and Cancer border moves from year to year, so a birthday near it doesn't settle your sign. In our 1950–2005 sample, the Sun had reached Cancer by noon UTC on June 21 in only 21 of 56 years. On June 22 it was in Cancer every year. Time zone matters as well, because the change happens at one moment worldwide.

The Venus swap: how often each Sun borrows the other's sign
Venus never strays more than about two signs from the Sun, and these two signs are next door. So the love planet often crosses over. In our sample, 28.7% of Gemini Sun dates had Venus in Cancer, and 34.8% of Cancer Sun dates had Venus in Gemini.
Put those together and the most common Venus combination for this pair is a swap: a Gemini Sun whose Venus is in Cancer alongside a Cancer Sun with Venus in Gemini. It turned up in 10.0% of modeled pairs of dates, more than both Venus signs repeating the Suns (5.4%). Mercury is similar. 24.1% of Gemini Sun dates had Mercury in Cancer, and Mercury repeats the Sun pair in 22.7% of modeled pairs.
