The community's favourite proof is Martin Luther King Jr., born January 15, 1929 with Mars at about 22° Gemini. A thread reading his chart calls it "the much criticized Mars in Gemini" and then walks through what the placement produced: a campaign fought almost entirely with speeches, letters and negotiated strategy, by a man who understood that a paragraph could move a country when a fist could not. Neither study tested astrology, and neither can; what they measure is the cost of the habit itself, in anyone. A recurring question on r/AskAstrologers gets at something real: why is Mars in Gemini called weak when Mars in the 3rd house, Gemini's natural house, is called strong? The pairing itself is a modern shortcut. Traditional astrology doesn't map Gemini onto the 3rd house (Mars's own "joy" is the 6th), so the paradox dissolves once you stop treating sign and house as the same thing. On the sign: Mars has no domicile, exaltation, detriment or fall in Gemini. William Lilly's list of where Mars suffers, in Christian Astrology, 1647 (1659 printing), names Libra, Taurus and Cancer, and Gemini is nowhere on it. A traditional astrologer might still call a peregrine Mars mildly weak for lacking dignity, and that's fair as far as it goes. What the tradition actually says is that Mars in Gemini answers to Mercury. Gemini is Mercury's sign, so Mercury is the dispositor, and its condition decides how the Mars behaves. People are messier than one placement, so treat that as a pattern to check, not a verdict.

The "mixed signals" reputation has a specific source. A thread asking about someone with both Venus and Mars in Gemini wonders whether that's why they seem to send mixed signals "or is that just a stereotype?" Every other summer, Mars comes back

Mars has just left Gemini: the summer 2026 stay ran from June 28, 2026, with August 10 its last full day before the move into Cancer, and anyone born inside that window has Mars in Gemini (the entry and exit days themselves need a birth time). The next window opens on June 7, 2028 and runs until July 19, 2028.

The rhythm drifts. The last three entries fell on August 20, 2022, July 20, 2024 and June 28, 2026, each a few weeks earlier in the calendar than the one before, and every so often the visit is anything but brief. The 2022 to 2023 stay is the case that breaks the date tables: Mars entered Gemini on August 20, 2022, stationed retrograde on October 30 at about 25.6° Gemini, turned direct on January 12, 2023 at about 8.1°, and had its last full day in the sign on March 24, 2023 before crossing into Cancer on the 25th. Two older oddities are worth knowing if your birthday is near them. The 1990 stay split: Mars entered Gemini on August 31, 1990, retreated into Taurus from December 14, 1990 through January 20, 1991, came back on the 21st, and had its last full day in Gemini on April 2, 1991, so a birthday inside that retreat is Taurus, not Gemini. And in 1961 Mars stationed direct at 29.99° Gemini, producing a two-day Gemini visit on February 5 and 6, 1961 before it crossed into Cancer on the 7th. What Valens said about Mars's own degrees in Gemini

The old texts didn't write "Mars in Gemini" essays. What they did was divide each sign into terms, degree bands owned by one planet, and describe what a planet's own band produced. Mars owns the band from 17°00′ to 23°59′ of Gemini in the Egyptian table Ptolemy called "more worthy of credence" (Tetrabiblos I.20 and I.21; his own separate table moves it to 20°00′ to 25°59′). Vettius Valens, second century, delineated that band in Book I, chapter 3 of the Anthologies (Riley translation): "The fourth term, 7° belong to Mars: much-burdened, with no brothers, having few children, a wanderer, with a good income, destructive, bloody, inquisitive."

Read it for what it is. Valens is describing the bound itself, the degrees Mars rules by term (a minor dignity), and the passage was never written as a reading of Mars placed anywhere in Gemini. His vocabulary for Mars was always grim. Still, two of his words, "a wanderer" and "inquisitive," sit comfortably inside the modern reading, and we'd rather show you the resemblance than claim it as evidence. It's an interpretive echo across two thousand years, not an observation repeated by both.
