Calendars that use Pacific time give November 29 for the end of the post-shadow, and the Full Moon falls late on October 25 in the Central, Mountain and Pacific zones. Vedic (sidereal) calendars place this retrograde in Libra; this page uses the tropical zodiac.

Scorpio is the sign of what's shared and what's hidden: money owed, joint accounts, loans, and trust. Astrologers read any retrograde as a time for unfinished business, so start there, with the unpaid bill, the unanswered message, the paperwork you still need to send. And check a suspicion before you turn it into an accusation.

Venus has its own retrograde from October 3 to November 13. It passes between Earth and the Sun at 11:44 p.m. Eastern on October 23, three and a half hours before Mercury stations, and slips back into Libra on October 25. Then both planets turn direct on November 13: Mercury at 10:54 a.m. and Venus at 7:27 p.m. Eastern. Their November 13 stations are the first pair on the same US Eastern date since at least 1850, and the next pair falls on March 20, 2105. With Mercury on communication and Venus on love and money, astrologers expect old agreements to come back up, so check what you actually agreed to before you reopen an old argument. This retrograde stays entirely inside Scorpio, while all three in 2027 cross back into the sign before. So Mercury spends September 30 to December 6 in Scorpio, about 67 days, when a typical visit lasts about 20. The last retrograde to stay inside Scorpio ran from October 31 to November 20, 2019, and the next one starts in late October 2039.

Who feels it most? Scorpio Suns, Moons and risings first. Then anyone with a planet between 5°02′ and 20°58′ of a fixed sign: Mercury crosses those Scorpio degrees three times (forward in the pre-shadow, backward in the retrograde, forward again in the post-shadow), so it meets planets there in Scorpio by conjunction, in Taurus by opposition, and in Leo and Aquarius by square. Gemini and Virgo feel every Mercury station, because Mercury rules both signs. Taurus and Libra get a Venus retrograde over the same weeks, since Venus rules both.

What is Mercury retrograde, actually?

Astronomically, Mercury never moves backward. It orbits the sun in about 88 days, far faster than Earth, and three or four times a year it laps us on the inside track. From our vantage point it appears to slide backward against the stars for roughly three weeks, the same way a slower car seems to drift backward as you pass it. NASA's January 2025 Night Sky Notes show the same illusion with Mars, which seems to reverse as Earth overtakes it, and Popular Science has a good plain-English explainer on why the illusion happens on schedule.

In astrology, Mercury rules the mind's logistics: communication, learning, contracts, technology, short-distance travel, the small print. When Mercury appears to reverse, astrologers read those domains as entering a review period. Mercury rules Gemini and Virgo, so astrologers expect both signs to feel the wobble most, and Mercury is the chart ruler for anyone with either sign rising.

The 2027 pattern: water in, air out

The station degrees in the table show the same movement each time: Mercury begins each retrograde in water, then backs into the preceding air sign. Water brings up memory, mood and concerns that are still hard to name. Air asks for questions, clearer wording and a conversation. February and October spend more of their arc in air. June stays mostly in Cancer and crosses into Gemini near the end.

Retrograde 1: February 9 – March 3, from Pisces back into Aquarius (stations retrograde at 5°58′ Pisces at 12:36 p.m. ET, direct at 20°55′ Aquarius at 7:32 a.m. ET; shadow January 25 – March 23; cazimi February 18). Most of this window unfolds in Aquarius, so group plans, shared decisions and technology choices come back for review. Retrograde 2: June 10 – July 4, from Cancer back into Gemini (stations retrograde at 6°21′ Cancer at 2:15 p.m. ET, direct at 27°28′ Gemini at 3:39 p.m. ET; shadow May 26 – July 19; cazimi June 23). This cycle spends most of its retrograde arc in Cancer before a brief return to Gemini, Mercury's own sign. Family or home concerns may lead the conversation. When Mercury crosses back into Gemini in the final days, check the practical side of those conversations: dates, recipients and what each person agreed to. The post-shadow runs to July 19; use it to confirm what everyone understood and correct anything that still feels unclear.

Retrograde 3: October 7 – 28, from Scorpio back into Libra (stations retrograde at 4°55′ Scorpio at 10:37 a.m. ET, direct at 19°18′ Libra at 10:11 a.m. ET; shadow September 17 – November 13; cazimi October 19). This window begins in Scorpio, drawing attention to privacy, debt and shared resources, then returns to Libra and the terms of an agreement. Who feels the 2027 cycle most

Air signs (Aquarius, Gemini, Libra)

Every window ends in an air sign, and February and October spend most of their arc there, so air placements tend to notice more revising, renegotiating and second drafts. The air-sign primer covers how each of the three handles a review.

  • Review before you launch: check the names, dates, links and final version once more.
  • Leave room: add time around travel, appointments and deadlines. Don't book the 20-minute connection inside a window.
  • Back up important files before each station (February 9, June 10, October 7), while everything is working normally.
  • Watch the wording: each cycle ends in air, so give messages, agreements and instructions an extra read. Before you send, read it as the person receiving it.
  • Don't freeze: if a contract cannot wait, read every clause, confirm the names and dates, and keep a copy.

Why Mercury retrograde gets the blame

Mercury gets the blame for missed messages, lost files and travel trouble because astrology gives it communication, contracts, technology and short trips. When it appears to reverse, astrologers read all of that as up for review, which is why the advice never changes: check, back up, re-read, reconnect. And plenty of people are listening.
