We ranked by where Saturn, Mars, and the five 2027 eclipses actually sit, with dates on every claim and, where it matters, degree bands. The bands are the part sun-sign lists skip, and they're why a transit that hammers a March 30 Aries can leave an April 19 Aries almost untouched. Positions are cross-checked against a published 2027 ephemeris; the mirror-image list is at lucky zodiac signs.

One caveat before the ranking: your sign does not make you unlucky, and there's research on that at the end. But some signs genuinely host more of 2027's heavy traffic than others, and that part is measurable. Here's the ranking and the dates behind it.

How we ranked this: the hard signatures of 2027

"Unlucky" is a feeling. Transits are a calendar. Three of them carry most of the weight in this ranking:

• Saturn's second year in Aries, now at the hard degrees. Saturn entered Aries in February 2026 and spends every day of 2027 there, still in its fall. The difference from 2026 is where in the sign it sits: the mid and late degrees. It stations retrograde on August 9, 2027 at 27°53' Aries and stations direct on December 23 at 21°01', so the 21° to 28° band of every cardinal sign gets three exact hits. From Aries, Saturn sits on Aries, squares Cancer and Capricorn, and opposes Libra.
• The Leo and Aquarius eclipse axis. The eclipse family that began in early 2026 peaks in 2027: of the year's five eclipses, three fall on the Leo or Aquarius side, headlined by the August 2 total solar eclipse at 9°55' Leo. Per NASA's eclipse data, its 6 minutes 23 seconds of totality near Luxor is the longest any land eclipse will run this century. Eclipses read as forced change, and Leo and Aquarius host this family through early 2028.
• A Mars retrograde opens the year. Mars stations retrograde on January 10, 2027 at 10°26' Virgo, backs into Leo on February 21, and stations direct on April 1 at 20°56' Leo. Mars retrograde is the frustration transit: stalled launches, conflicts that come back for a second round, effort that doesn't land. It hits early Virgo and late Leo degrees directly.

• Jan 10, 2027: Mars stations retrograde at 10°26' Virgo (retrograde until April 1).
• Feb 6, 2027: Annular solar eclipse at 17°38' Aquarius.
• Feb 20, 2027: Penumbral lunar eclipse at 2°06' Virgo, the last of the Virgo and Pisces eclipse series that ran since late 2024.
• Feb 21, 2027: Mars retrogrades back into Leo.
• Apr 1, 2027: Mars stations direct at 20°56' Leo.
• Jul 18, 2027: Lunar eclipse at 25°49' Capricorn. A borderline one: it's so shallow that some almanacs classify it as a plain full moon. We count it, and we say so.
• Jul 26, 2027: Jupiter leaves Leo for Virgo.
• Aug 2, 2027: Total solar eclipse at 9°55' Leo, the century's longest on land.
• Aug 9, 2027: Saturn stations retrograde at 27°53' Aries.
• Aug 17, 2027: Penumbral lunar eclipse at 24°12' Aquarius.
• Dec 23, 2027: Saturn stations direct at 21°01' Aries.

Method note: we rank by hard aspects (conjunction, square, opposition) from slow planets, plus eclipse contact. The weighting, in one line: a year-long Saturn hard aspect outranks an eclipse, an eclipse in your sign outranks one opposing it, and Mercury retrogrades only break ties. Mercury retrogrades barely move this ranking; 2027 has three (February 9 to March 3, June 10 to July 4, October 7 to 28), and we note them per sign where they pile on. Now the list.

1. Aries: year two of Saturn, and now it's personal degrees

Aries tops the list for the second year running, and 2027 is arguably the harder of the two. In 2026 Saturn was new to the sign, grinding over the early degrees. In 2027 it works the middle and end: anyone with an Aries Sun around 8° to 28°, which is birthdays from roughly March 29 to April 18, gets Saturn exactly on their Sun at some point this year. And the retrograde loop means the late-decan group (birthdays near April 11 to 18) gets it three times: once on the way out, again retrograde after August 9, and a third pass after December 23.

Meanwhile Neptune, which met Saturn at 0° Aries in 2026, sits on the sign's first degrees all year. Add it up and nearly every Aries degree hosts a slow, heavy planet at some point in 2027. The July 18 Capricorn eclipse also squares the late-Aries zone at the exact moment Saturn occupies it, which makes late July and early August the densest stretch of the Aries year.

The one cushion Aries had, Jupiter's easy trine from Leo, expires on July 26 when Jupiter moves to Virgo. Aries carries the longest stretch of hard contacts on this list. 2. Capricorn: the square, plus an eclipse in your own sign

Capricorn moves up the list this year. Saturn, its own ruler, squares the sign from Aries all year, and the same degree logic applies: Suns around 8° to 28° Capricorn, birthdays roughly December 30 to January 18, take the exact square, with the 21° to 28° group squared three times by the retrograde loop.

What pushes Capricorn to #2 is the July 18 lunar eclipse at 25°49' Capricorn, which lands inside the exact zone Saturn's retrograde is squaring. An eclipse in your own sign while your ruler squares you from its fall is a genuine double hit. One footnote: this eclipse is so shallow that some sources classify it as an ordinary full moon. If you want to treat it as half an eclipse, Capricorn and Cancer effectively tie for second.

The real consolation is what's over. Pluto, which spent 2008 to 2024 demolishing and rebuilding Capricorn, is now fully gone into Aquarius, no retrograde re-entries left. 2027's pressure tests plans, deadlines, and commitments; it doesn't dig up the foundations the way Pluto did. 3. Cancer: squared all year, opposed by the eclipse

Cancer takes the same Saturn square from the other side. Suns around 8° to 28° Cancer, birthdays roughly July 1 to 21, get the exact aspect, and the late-degree group gets the triple pass. Where Capricorn's eclipse lands in-sign, Cancer's arrives by opposition: the July 18 eclipse at 25°49' Capricorn opposes late-Cancer placements, and oppositions tend to arrive through the people on the other side of your commitments.

Cancer also picks up the year's most on-the-nose Mercury retrograde: the June 10 station happens at 6°22' Cancer before Mercury backs into Gemini, a small but well-aimed communications snarl for early-Cancer birthdays right before eclipse season. Unlike 2026, there's no Jupiter cushion arriving mid-year; that protection ended in June 2026, and nothing comparable reaches a water sign in 2027. 4. Leo: the eclipse of the century lands on you

Leo is the newcomer to this list, and its case is different from the Saturn signs. On August 2, 2027 the total solar eclipse at 9°55' Leo puts the year's headline sky event directly on the sign: the longest land totality of the century, six-plus minutes of shadow crossing Spain, North Africa, and the Arabian Peninsula. Two weeks later the August 17 lunar eclipse at 24°12' Aquarius opposes Leo from across the axis. First-decan Leos, birthdays roughly July 28 to August 6, are the epicenter of the year's forced-change energy.

Before any of that, Leo hosts the tail end of the Mars retrograde: Mars backs into Leo on February 21 and sits stalled on the sign's late degrees until April 1, a ten-week stretch where drive and visibility run at half power. Late-decan Leos feel that one most.

So why only #4? Because Leo also holds the year's best mitigation: Jupiter stays in Leo until July 26, and Saturn in Aries trines Leo rather than squaring it. Leo gets a concentrated stretch of change around the eclipses with real support underneath, which is a very different year from a Saturn grind. 5. Aquarius: two eclipses in the sign, and Pluto isn't done

Aquarius keeps its place from last year because in 2027 the sign hosts two eclipses of its own, on top of the one opposing it. The February 6 annular solar eclipse lands at 17°38' Aquarius and the August 17 lunar eclipse at 24°12' Aquarius; between them, the August 2 Leo total eclipse opposes the sign. Mid-to-late-decan Aquarians, birthdays roughly February 5 to 13, get the most direct contact.

Underneath the eclipses, Pluto sits between roughly 4° and 7° Aquarius all year, slow generational pressure that early-February birthdays already know. The Mars retrograde in late Leo opposes late Aquarius through the spring, and the year's first Mercury retrograde spends its second half in the sign. What Aquarius does not have is any hard Saturn aspect; Aries sextiles Aquarius. That's why it sits below the cardinal signs despite the busiest eclipse schedule on the list. 6. Libra: the opposition nobody writes about

Libra drops from #2 to #6, but it doesn't leave the list, because Saturn's opposition never turns off. Suns around 8° to 28° Libra, birthdays roughly October 1 to 21, spend 2027 with the planet of limits staring at them from across the relationship axis, and the late-degree group gets the retrograde's triple pass. Oppositions play out through other people: partners, clients, the person on the far side of a negotiation.

Two smaller pile-ons: Neptune opposes Libra's first decan all year, blurring exactly the judgments an opposition year asks you to make sharply, and the year's last Mercury retrograde backs into Libra in mid-October, finishing at 19°18' on October 28. The saving grace is the same as 2026: Libra is where Saturn is exalted, so its hard aspects tend to land here as a clarifying relationship audit rather than wreckage. Near misses: Virgo's split year, and the fixed-sign eclipse squares

• Virgo has the strangest 2027 in the zodiac: the year opens with Mars stationing retrograde at 10°26' Virgo on January 10 and the February 20 eclipse closing the old Virgo and Pisces eclipse series at 2°06' Virgo. A rough first quarter for early-decan Virgos. Then on July 26 Jupiter enters Virgo for a thirteen-month stay, and the second half gets much stronger support. If the ranking were January-to-June only, Virgo makes the list; over twelve months, it nets out.
• Taurus and Scorpio each catch the August 2 eclipse by square across the fixed grand cross, sharpest for placements around 5° to 15° of either sign. One hard week apiece, not a hard year. Scorpio also hosts the October Mercury retrograde's first week. Uranus, meanwhile, has finally and fully left Taurus; that eight-year rattle is over.

About the Year of the Goat

If you got here searching for whether 2027 is unlucky because of the Goat: that's the Chinese zodiac, a different system making a different kind of claim. The Year of the Goat (also translated Sheep or Ram) runs from February 6, 2027, the lunar new year, into late January 2028, and 2027's element makes it a Fire Goat year. The unlucky reputation comes from a proverb claiming only one in ten people born in Goat years finds good luck. Historical support for the saying is thin.

Two things that system actually says about 2027: the traditional risk falls on people whose own birth-year animal is the Goat (the Ben Ming Nian idea, that your own animal year is the risky one), and on the Ox, the Goat's clash sign. None of it connects to where Saturn or the eclipses sit; the proverb is folklore about birth years, not a forecast for 2027 itself. The two systems can coexist, but they shouldn't be blended into one list, and here we don't.

Why your rising sign changes this ranking

A sun-sign ranking can only go so far, and here's why. A transit doesn't land on a sign in the abstract. It lands on a specific house in your chart, and the house is set by your rising sign, not your sun.

Take Saturn in Aries. For an Aries rising it's transiting the 1st house: body, identity, the way you walk into a room. For a Cancer rising the exact same Saturn is in the 10th house, career and reputation. For a Libra rising it's in the 7th, partnership. So the right question isn't "is my sign unlucky in 2027." It's "which area of my life do these transits land in for me." Who actually has a good 2027

The six signs outside the ranking still have hard weeks, but their pressure runs lighter or shorter:

• Sagittarius has the quietest slow-planet year on the wheel: no hard Saturn aspect (Aries trines it) and no eclipse in the sign. Its dents are brief and early-degree, from the January Mars station square, and once Jupiter reaches Virgo in July the square from there is the year's only lasting friction.
• Gemini dodges the slow-planet hard aspects as well; its hits are brief (the January Mars station squares early Gemini, and June's Mercury retrograde ends in the sign). The wildcard is Uranus, newly settled into the first decan, which reads as restlessness and reinvention rather than misfortune.
• Virgo after July 26 gets the year's biggest single upgrade: Jupiter in the sign for thirteen months, its first Virgo run since 2015 and 2016. Taurus and Capricorn pick up the earth trine from it, a genuine second-half consolation for Capricorn's rough top half.

Notice Leo appears on both sides of 2027's ledger: eclipse epicenter and Jupiter host at once. What happened to the 2026 ranking

Last year this page ranked Aries, Libra, Cancer, Capricorn, and Aquarius as 2026's hardest-hit, on the strength of Saturn's February 13, 2026 entry into Aries, the once-in-36-years Saturn and Neptune conjunction at 0° Aries on February 20, and an eclipse schedule split across the fixed and mutable axes. Most of that architecture carried into 2027; what changed is the details. Saturn moved from the early degrees to the late ones, so the pressure shifted from early-decan cardinal birthdays to mid-and-late-decan ones. The eclipse series consolidated onto the Leo and Aquarius axis, which is what pulled Leo onto the list and pushed the Virgo and Pisces lunar-eclipse story into history. And Libra, 2026's #2, eased to #6 as the Saturn opposition became the sign's only major hit.

The through-line: 2026's hard aspects didn't hit "Aries" in the abstract, they hit particular houses of particular charts for dated windows. 2027 works the same way, two years into the cycle instead of one.

Psychologist Richard Wiseman spent three years studying more than 400 people who described themselves as consistently lucky or unlucky, published as The Luck Factor.
