Cancer compatibility
Cancer compatibility: all twelve matches, read around the wheel
Cancer's easiest matches are usually Scorpio, Pisces, Taurus and Virgo, and astrologers often add another Cancer. The water signs offer emotional understanding; the earth signs offer practical steadiness. The harder pairings tend to argue about privacy, reassurance and who makes the decisions. As the cardinal water sign and the Moon's own sign, Cancer is read through care, memory, family and the short list of people let into its private life. Each of the twelve pairings below tests that differently.
Cancer is ruled by the Moon, yet in our sample of every date from 1950 to 2005 the Moon was in Cancer at noon UTC on only 8.2% of Cancer Sun dates, and Venus on 20.4%. So check both placements in a birth chart with your Moon and Venus before assuming you love like the textbook Cancer description. The pair guides do that for each match.
Cancer's classic best matches are Scorpio and Pisces, the other water signs, and another Cancer. Taurus and Virgo, a sextile away, come next. Aries and Libra square Cancer and clash over who leads. Capricorn, the opposite sign, is a strong pull with a lot to negotiate. Gemini, Leo, Sagittarius and Aquarius depend more on the rest of the chart.

| Modality | Cardinal: associated with starting things. Ptolemy called Cancer a solstitial sign, because the Sun turns back at the summer solstice there |
| Ruling planet | The Moon. In traditional astrology Cancer is the Moon's only sign, as Leo is the Sun's |
| Dignities | Jupiter is exalted in Cancer; Mars is in its fall there |
| Dates | Usually June 21 to July 22. At noon UTC from 1950 to 2005, June 21 was a Cancer day in only 21 of 56 years, so a birthday on the cusp needs the year and birth time |

Some signs couldn't be confirmed
A date alone doesn't tell us the birth time or time zone, so we allow extra room around each position. Here that allowance covers two signs, which doesn't mean the planet changed signs that day. Both candidates are shown and this pair is left uninterpreted. The birth chart calculator opens empty, so you can enter either person's details.
Check the placement with birth time and placeThis tool compares Sun, Mercury, Venus and Mars signs. It doesn't calculate Moon compatibility or exact aspects, and rising sign and houses need a birth time and place.

Venus, Mercury and Mars on Cancer Sun dates
We worked out one noon-UTC chart for every day from 1950 to 2005 and grouped the dates by Sun sign. Cancer got 1,762 of them, more than any other sign. That's astronomy, not lore: the Sun appears to move most slowly in early July, when Earth is farthest from it, so it spends a little longer in Cancer than anywhere else.
On those dates Venus, the planet astrologers use for love and attraction, was in Gemini 34.8% of the time, Leo 27.5% and Cancer only 20.4%, with Virgo at 9.7% and Taurus at 7.5%. Venus in Cancer is the textbook Cancer lover, but 79.6% of Cancer Sun dates had Venus in another sign.
Mercury, the planet of talk, was in Cancer on 46.9% of the dates, Leo on 33.1% and Gemini on 20.0%. Mars was in Cancer on 16.9% of Cancer Sun dates, more than in any other sign, against 9.1% of all dates in the sample. Jupiter, exalted in Cancer, was there on 9.4%: the Cancer seasons of 1954, 1966, 1978, 1990 and 2002, plus a few days in 2001.
These are counts of dates, with every day weighted equally. They aren't a survey of people or couples, and a different birth-year window would shift the shares a little. Use them to see how much room a Cancer Sun leaves for the rest of the chart, then check real birthdays in the calculator above.

How we calculated the date sample
We calculated Sun, Mercury, Venus and Mars positions at noon UTC on each of the 20,454 calendar dates from 1 January 1950 to 31 December 2005, using PyEphem 4.2.1. Each date has equal weight. Apparent geocentric positions are converted to ecliptic longitude for that date and divided into twelve 30° tropical signs.
We group the dates by Sun sign, then count the share with Mercury, Venus or Mars in each sign. Pair estimates multiply those rounded shares, assuming two independent date draws with no age-gap restriction. For example, 20.5% of Taurus Sun dates and 20.4% of Cancer Sun dates have Venus in the same sign as the Sun: 0.205 × 0.204 × 100 gives about 4.2% for both placements together.
Shares are rounded to one decimal place and may not sum to exactly 100%. For two people with the same Sun sign, reversed Venus combinations are combined. These are frequencies in a date sample, not birth-population statistics or observations of couples. They cannot tell us how people communicate or whether a relationship will last.

Cancer around the wheel: the twelve pairings by distance
Astrology measures a pairing first by how far apart the two signs sit. With two Cancers, it's the same sign: instant recognition, and the risk that both people need comforting on the same night. Gemini and Leo are the next-door signs. Gemini with Cancer turns on what gets shared with friends and what stays between you, while the Leo pairing is a running debate about dinner for two or a party for thirty.
Two signs away sit the sextiles. Cancer with Taurus is the comfort match, where the question is whether the care on offer is the care that's wanted. Cancer and Virgo is the caretakers' match: it asks who remembers the birthdays, refills and appointments, and whether anyone notices.
Three signs away come the squares, Aries and Libra, both cardinal like Cancer. The Aries match is about risk: how much of a safety net one person needs before the other jumps. Cancer and Libra clash over making up, and whether a lovely evening counts as an apology.
Four signs away are the trines, the other water signs. Cancer with Scorpio asks when an old hurt is settled, and the Pisces pairing asks who handles the practical side when feelings run high, and where helping should stop. Five signs away sit Sagittarius and Aquarius, which modern astrologers call quincunx. Cancer and Sagittarius argue about time and money spent on people outside the relationship; the Aquarius match about whether a personal question feels like care or prying. Directly across the wheel is Capricorn, the opposite sign, where a work deadline and a family evening want the same night.
Best match for Cancer, and an older list that disagrees
Most modern lists put Scorpio and Pisces first, then Taurus and Virgo, and many add Capricorn on an opposites-attract argument. The first four come from Ptolemy's rule in Tetrabiblos I.13: the trine and the sextile join harmonious signs, the square and the opposition join disharmonious ones.
That's where the old and new lists split. Ptolemy called the opposition disharmonious; modern lists often recommend Capricorn anyway, for its contrast with Cancer. He also had no quincunx. Gemini, Leo, Sagittarius and Aquarius share none of the sign relationships Ptolemy describes with Cancer, so he called them disjunct or alien (I.16). In Ptolemy's reading they aren't bad matches for Cancer. They're unconnected, which is a different thing.
If you want one answer, Scorpio and Pisces are the signs nearly every tradition agrees on. The pair guides above go further than a ranking, because the same match can be easy for one couple and a fight for another depending on the rest of the chart.
The Moon's sign, with the Moon somewhere else
No sign leans on the Moon like Cancer. It's the Moon's house in Ptolemy's rulership chapter, and modern astrologers use the Moon for emotional needs, comfort and the habits you fall back on when you're tired. That makes a Cancer reading lopsided if it stops at the Sun.
Our sample shows why. On Cancer Sun dates the Moon at noon UTC was spread almost evenly across all twelve signs, between 8.1% and 8.6% each, and in Cancer on just 8.2%. And the Moon moves fast: it changed sign at some point during the UTC day on 43.9% of sampled dates. On those days a birth date alone can't tell you the Moon sign. You need a time.
So the most useful next step for a Cancer comparison is both Moon signs. Run each person through the Sun, Moon and rising calculator with their birth date, time and place, then see how astrologers read two Moon signs together.
Worst match for Cancer: where the friction comes from
Aries is the sign most often named as Cancer's worst match, with the two quincunx signs, Sagittarius and Aquarius, not far behind. Libra joins Aries on the traditional difficult list, because both square Cancer. All three are cardinal signs, starters, and two people who both want to set the direction tend to collide over who does.
There's also an old dignity story behind the Aries reputation. Mars rules Aries and is in its fall in Cancer (I.19), so astrologers describe Mars energy as uncomfortable in Cancer's sign. Plenty of Cancer Suns carry it: Mars sat in Cancer on 16.9% of sampled Cancer Sun dates. Mars in its fall is usually read as anger that goes quiet first and comes out later.
None of this rules a person out. With Aries or Libra, decide early who handles which decisions. With Sagittarius or Aquarius, agree how much time together and how much privacy each of you wants. With Capricorn, settle what happens when work and home want the same evening.
Why we don't give Cancer pairings a percentage
Search any Cancer pairing and you'll see a score, and the scores don't agree. On 2 October 2026, zodiacsign.com scored Cancer and Leo at 29%, jobcannon at 55% and Google's AI Overview at 65–67%. For Gemini and Cancer the same three gave 21%, 55% and 60%. None of these pages says how its number is worked out.
We'd rather show you something you can check. Every pair guide carries real counts from the 1950–2005 date sample, such as how often both Venus signs repeat the Sun signs, and the calculator looks up Sun, Mercury, Venus and Mars for two actual birth dates. That tells you which planets to read. A Sun-sign percentage can't.
Cancer in love and bed, and Cancer soulmates
In love, Cancer is read as slow to trust and very loyal once it does. Sexual chemistry in astrology follows Venus and Mars more than the Sun, but the Sun-sign lore is consistent: Scorpio and Pisces bring the most intense emotional and physical connection, Capricorn the strongest opposite-sign pull, and the fire signs Aries and Leo more heat than safety, which Cancer needs first. Taurus and Virgo are described as unhurried, attentive partners.
Soulmate lists for Cancer almost always name Scorpio or Pisces, sometimes Taurus or Capricorn. That's the trine, the sextile and the opposition talking, plus a lot of family and home lore. For marriage specifically, astrologers favour the signs read as builders: Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn for steadiness, Scorpio for loyalty. A shared element is a good start in astrology's terms; whether someone is your person comes down to how the two of you treat each other.
Marriage is where Sun-sign claims have actually been tested. Helgertz and Scott (2020) looked at Swedish register data covering 66,063 marital unions and found no consistent support for the Sun-sign compatibility rules they tested, in who married whom or in who divorced. Full-chart synastry wasn't part of that test.
For a long relationship with a Cancer, the questions that come up are concrete: whose family gets the holidays, how much privacy each person needs, and what happens to a hurt that never got said.
Cancer as a friend, sibling or coworker
In astrology's telling, Cancer friendships run on memory. The Cancer friend is the one who knows your coffee order, keeps the group chat alive and still mentions the thing you said three years ago, kindly or not. They tend to have a small inner circle and a wider ring of people they're warm to but don't confide in.
Some pairings work better as friends than as couples. Cancer and Aquarius is a common friendship search, and astrologers often rate it higher as a friendship, because independence matters less between friends than at home. Gemini makes an easy talking friend, Sagittarius a good travel friend, and Scorpio or Pisces the friend you call at 2 a.m.
With siblings and family, Cancer's reputation is the keeper of traditions: holidays, recipes, the photo albums. At work, the cardinal side shows. Cancer often looks after a team the way it looks after a home, and it takes criticism of that team personally. In any of these roles, the easiest friction to avoid is the unsaid hurt. Say it while it's small.

Cancer compatibility questions
What is a Cancer's best match?
Scorpio and Pisces are the most common answer. They're the other water signs, a trine away, and both ancient and modern astrology read the trine as harmonious. Taurus and Virgo, a sextile away, come next. Capricorn appears on many modern lists too, though Ptolemy called the opposition disharmonious.
Which signs clash with Cancer?
Aries and Libra square Cancer, so astrologers expect friction, usually over who sets the direction, since all three are cardinal signs. Capricorn is the opposite sign, which modern astrology reads as attraction plus tension. Sagittarius and Aquarius sit five signs away and are often listed as awkward matches, though Ptolemy described no relationship between them and Cancer at all.
Who shouldn't a Cancer marry?
Astrology can't rule anyone out. The Swedish register study above found no consistent marriage or divorce pattern for the Sun-sign rules it tested. If you're thinking about marrying a Cancer, the useful questions are about family, privacy and how each of you handles a hurt, whatever the other person's sign.
Is Cancer compatible with other water signs?
In astrology, yes, more than with any other element. Scorpio and Pisces form trines with Cancer, and two Cancers share everything by sign. The common warning for an all-water pairing is that both people can feel a mood strongly at once, so someone still has to be the steady one.
