Mercury in Scorpio Reads Between the Lines and Keeps Its Own Counsel

Mercury in Scorpio is a strong placement for a sharp, probing mind, with no traditional debility: Evangeline Adams wrote in 1930 that "no other position so thoroughly accentuates the fierce acuteness of the mind."

For birth charts, Mercury's long 2026 stay gives babies born from September 30 to December 6, 2026 a Scorpio Mercury, a late-November batch of Sagittarius Suns included, and those born from October 24 to November 13 a retrograde one. On each end date, the birth time decides.

Is Mercury in Scorpio good?

Yes, and its strength is depth. Adams described it with a borrowed phrase: in Scorpio, Mercury is "quick and powerful, sharper than a two-edged sword" (Evangeline Adams, Astrology: Your Place Among the Stars, Dodd, Mead, 1930, pp. 217-218). Alan Leo put the cost beside the gift: "Mentally positive; obstinate and difficult to convince; but capable of much enthusiasm or great indignation" (Alan Leo, How to Judge a Nativity, 4th ed., 1928, p. 312). That stubbornness cuts both ways: hard to fool, and slow to drop a wrong first read.

Scorpio holds none of Mercury's homes, its exaltation, its detriments or its fall. William Lilly's 1647 list gives Mercury its houses in Gemini and Virgo, its exaltation at 15° of Virgo, its detriments in Sagittarius and Pisces and its fall in Pisces (Christian Astrology, Book I, ch. XIII), so a Mercury in detriment in Scorpio is a myth.

Nor is it debilitated in Vedic astrology. That word (neecha) belongs to one Mercury sign, Pisces, the seventh sign from its exaltation in Virgo, counted in the sidereal zodiac (Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra ch. 3, vv. 49-50, Santhanam translation, 1984, p. 19).

Mercury's long 2026 stay in Scorpio

Mercury's 2026 stay in Scorpio lasts 66.9 days, September 30 to December 6, because its whole retrograde, October 24 to November 13, stays inside the sign (20°58′ back to 5°02′ Scorpio). That's close to the sign's record: Mercury's longest stays in Scorpio last about 67.1 days, as in 2019 and 1973.

In 2026 the Sun reaches Sagittarius on November 22 and Mercury stays in Scorpio until December 6, so Sagittarius babies born in that window have a Scorpio Mercury. For a birth on either end date, check the time.

Mercury passes between Earth and the Sun at 12°10′ Scorpio at 9:24 a.m. Eastern on November 4, 2026, the cazimi of this retrograde, inside the stretch Vettius Valens gave to Mercury itself. Valens on Mercury's own degrees of Scorpio, the 12th through the 19th: "The third term, 8°, belongs to Mercury: military, competitive, prizewinning, and, where words are concerned, bitter, contentious, not to be despised" (Vettius Valens, Anthologies I.3, Riley translation, pp. 6-7). A term is a band of degrees, so the line fits those degrees rather than every Mercury in Scorpio, and the 2026 retrograde backs through all of them.

Retrogrades that stay inside Scorpio from one station to the other are spaced years apart: 13 of them from 1930 to 2029. The last one before 2026 ran from October 31 to November 20, 2019; the next starts on October 26, 2039.

The transit has a reputation of its own. In a 2019 Ipsos online poll of about 1,005 US adults, 14% agreed that "When Mercury is in retrograde, things go wrong," 40% disagreed and 46% said they didn't know (Ipsos topline, December 2019). Sharp tongue, long memory, closed door

Max and Augusta Foss Heindel wrote that Mercury in Scorpio "gives a shrewd mind, a keen aspiration, a quick wit and a sharp tongue with biting sarcasm that can sting like the scorpion" (Max and Augusta Foss Heindel, The Message of the Stars, ch. X, p. 204). Alan Leo saw the same wit and gave it better manners: "Clever in detection, having much tact and diplomacy. Often witty but sarcastic" (p. 312). The Heindels lead with the sting, Leo with the tact.

In practice this Mercury thinks like an investigator. It asks the question under the polite answer, notices when a story has a gap, and learns by going deep on one subject instead of skimming ten. Research, editing, auditing and interviewing suit it, and so does negotiation, because it hears what the other side isn't saying.

Ptolemy didn't read Mercury sign by sign. He grouped the signs that hold Mercury and the Moon by type, and Scorpio is one of his solid signs, which "make them just, unaffected by flattery, persistent, firm, intelligent, patient, industrious, stern, self-controlled, tenacious of grudges" (Ptolemy, Tetrabiblos III.13, Robbins translation, Loeb 1940). That last phrase is the long memory: Mercury in Scorpio still remembers an argument years after the other person has let it go.

It talks less than it knows. Texts come short and exact, and shorter still to someone it doesn't trust yet. The humor is dry and dark, the aside that lands a beat late. Under a Libra Sun's softer manner, most of that edge comes across as plain privacy.

Libra, Scorpio and Sagittarius Suns

Because Mercury can't get more than about 28 degrees from the Sun, a Scorpio Mercury has only three possible Suns, the rule behind Mercury in each of the twelve signs. For Mercury in Scorpio that means a Scorpio Sun in 51.5% of these births, a Libra Sun in 30.6% and a Sagittarius Sun in 17.9%, in our model of US births from 1930 to 2029.

A Libra Sun with Mercury in Scorpio is a familiar mix, found in 32.2% of Libra Sun births in our model: Libra's warm, fair manner over a Scorpio mind that's slower to trust and quicker to spot the angle. Sagittarius Suns are the smallest of the three groups, and the mix can feel like a mismatch: a Sun sign known for blurting things out, with a Mercury that holds them back. Sagittarius babies born after December 6, 2026 have Mercury in Sagittarius, the frank and far-reaching version instead.

Carl Sagan, Mark Twain and Joni Mitchell were all born with Mercury in Scorpio.

• · Carl Sagan, born November 9, 1934, had a Scorpio Sun and was born with Mercury retrograde at about 3° Scorpio, the same sign as Mercury's October 24 to November 13, 2026 retrograde. He co-wrote and narrated Cosmos (1980).
• · Mark Twain, born November 30, 1835, had a Sagittarius Sun and Mercury in Scorpio, the same pairing as the late-November 2026 babies.
• · Joni Mitchell, born November 7, 1943, has a Scorpio Sun and Mercury at about 13° Scorpio. She's known for personal lyrics and unconventional compositions, and she worked out her own guitar tunings after polio weakened her left hand.

In love, Mercury in Scorpio listens hard and says little until it trusts you. A woman or man with this Mercury flirts by paying attention: a question about something you mentioned weeks ago, a long look, a slow build of private jokes. Small talk bores them, and they can tell when they're being handled.

In a long marriage the strength is loyalty in conversation. It keeps confidences, it remembers what matters to a partner, and it wants the real answer to "how was your day," not the polite one.
