What Your Mercury Sign Means, and Why It Sits Next to Your Sun

Zodiac ring with the Mercury symbol beside the Sun, and three arcs marking the Sun's sign and the two signs next to it.

Mercury in astrology is the planet of the reasoning mind, and it never strays far from the Sun. So the Sun sign you already know narrows your Mercury sign to three.

Quick answer

Your Mercury sign describes how you think, learn, argue and put things into words. It's always your Sun sign or the sign on either side of it. In our model of US births from 1930 to 2029, 51.0% of births have Mercury in the Sun's sign, 24.2% in the sign before and 24.7% in the sign after.

Your Mercury sign is your Sun sign or a neighbor

Mercury orbits so close to the Sun that from Earth it never appears far from it. From 1930 to 2029 the widest gap between the two was 27.8 degrees, on March 28, 2000, and the farthest point of each swing ranged from 17.8 to 27.8 degrees. A sign is 30 degrees wide. So Mercury can sit one sign ahead of the Sun or one sign behind it, and that's as far as it ever gets.

Ptolemy wrote that Mercury "never is farther removed from the sun than one sign in either direction" (Tetrabiblos I.17, Robbins translation, Loeb 1940). William Lilly put a number on it in 1647: Mercury is "never distant from the Sun above 27.degrees" (Christian Astrology, Book I, ch. XIII). The JPL figure for 1930 to 2029 is a shade wider, at 27.8.

The astrologer Jo Gleason said it plainly on The Astrology Podcast in 2021: "Mercury doesn't get very far away from the Sun in its orbit, so the chance for Mercury and the Sun to be in the same sign is pretty big." Our model puts that chance at 51.0%.

So the Sun sign is the key, and most Americans can name theirs: in a 2022 YouGov survey, 90% of US adults picked one of the twelve signs as their own and 10% said they weren't sure. Find your Sun sign in the table and read across. The split isn't even from sign to sign. With the Sun in Aries, 36.6% of births have Mercury back in Pisces. With the Sun in Pisces, 37.4% have Mercury in Aquarius.

Take a Taurus Sun. In 47.8% of Taurus births Mercury is in Taurus too, and the old readings call that mind slow to decide and hard to move once it has. In 31.9% Mercury is back in Aries, quick to take up an idea and quick to argue it. In 20.3% it's ahead in Gemini, talkative and always after something new. Same Sun sign, three different ways of making a point.

What Mercury rules in a birth chart

Mercury stands for the thinking mind: how you learn, reason, speak, write, bargain and joke. Ptolemy split the soul between Mercury and the Moon. "Of the qualities of the soul, those which concern the reason and the mind are apprehended by means of the condition of Mercury," he wrote, and he left the senses and the irrational part to the Moon (Tetrabiblos III.13).

Vettius Valens gave a longer list. "Mercury indicates education, letters, disputation, reasoning, brotherhood, interpretation, embassies, number, accounts, geometry, markets," he begins, and he adds that its effects "go in many directions, depending on the changes of the zodiac and the interactions of the stars" (Anthologies I.1, Riley translation, p. 2). That second line is why Mercury gets read by sign and by aspect: the same planet in a different sign, or touched by a different planet, makes a different kind of thinker. Alan Leo called Mercury "a mirror of the mind, just as the Moon is a reflector of the senses" (How to Judge a Nativity, 4th ed., 1928, p. 311), and Max and Augusta Foss Heindel opened their Mercury chapter with the myth of the "Messenger of the Gods" (The Message of the Stars, ch. X).

NASA calls Mercury the fastest planet, "zipping around the Sun every 88 Earth days", and notes that it's named "for the swiftest of the ancient Roman gods".

What's the best Mercury sign to have?

Virgo, by the traditional rules. It's the one sign where Mercury is both at home and exalted, and Mercury is the only one of the seven classical planets whose exaltation falls in a sign it rules. Chris Brennan, on the same 2021 podcast episode, put it this way: "Mercury is kind of weird because it has its exaltation in one of its domiciles, in the sign of Virgo." Gemini is Mercury's other home.

Home (domicile)Gemini and Virgo (Ptolemy, Tetrabiblos I.17; Valens; Lilly)
ExaltationVirgo, at 15° in Valens (Anthologies III.4), Lilly and the Vedic BPHS; Ptolemy names the sign only
DetrimentSagittarius and Pisces, the signs opposite its homes
FallPisces, opposite the exaltation
TriplicityThe air signs Gemini, Libra and Aquarius, by night (Ptolemy I.18; Lilly)
The other eight signsNone of Mercury's homes, its exaltation, its detriments or its fall; Mercury still holds term and face degrees in many of them

"Debilitated" means two things. William Lilly's scoring counts detriment and fall among a planet's essential debilities, which puts Mercury's in Sagittarius and Pisces. In Vedic astrology the word translates neecha, and Mercury is neecha in Pisces alone, most deeply at 15 degrees (Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra ch. 3 vv. 49–50, Santhanam translation, 1984, p. 19). Vedic charts use the sidereal zodiac, though, so a Mercury in tropical Pisces may sit in sidereal Aquarius.

In our model, 16.5% of US births from 1930 to 2029 have Mercury in Gemini or Virgo, the signs it rules, and 16.9% have it in Sagittarius or Pisces, the signs opposite them. The other two thirds have none of these. A dignity describes how well placed the planet is to do its work in the old scheme.

Which sign is bad for Mercury?

Sagittarius and Pisces are the two signs tradition counts against Mercury. Both are its detriments, because each sits opposite one of its homes: Sagittarius faces Gemini, and Pisces faces Virgo. Pisces is its fall as well. Ptolemy's reason for the exaltation and the fall was the season. Mercury is a dry planet, so he exalted it in Virgo, the sign of the dry autumn, and put its depression in Pisces, where the moist spring begins (Tetrabiblos I.19). Valens set every planet's depression opposite its exaltation, which puts Mercury's at 15 degrees of Pisces.

Early 20th-century astrologers pushed back on the bad name. The Heindels wrote of Sagittarius, "Though in detriment it is still a strong position of Mercury" (p. 204), and Adams complained that "Too much emphasis has been laid by astrologers on the fact that Mercury is in his fall and detriment in Pisces" (p. 243). They still saw the weak spots. Alan Leo found Mercury in Sagittarius "Facile in expression, but lacking in continuity" (p. 312), and Adams thought Mercury in Pisces usually lacks a keen edge of reason.

Mercury sign or Mercury house

Your Mercury sign and your Mercury house are two separate placements, and only the sign comes from the date. The sign describes the style of thinking. The house is the part of life where that thinking gets the most use, such as work, home, money or friends. The houses turn with the clock, so the house needs your birth time and place, and Mercury in Virgo and Mercury in the 6th house are different things, however often they're mixed up. A house-by-house guide to the birth chart covers what each of the twelve rules.

The rising sign is a third placement: the sign on the eastern horizon at the minute you were born, which needs the birth time too (what a rising sign is and how it's found). With a birth time and place, a full chart shows all three at once. A free birth chart marks Mercury's house, degree and any retrograde, and it reads Mercury's sign, house and aspects.

Born during a Mercury retrograde

About one birth in five has Mercury retrograde. Mercury was retrograde at 19.2% of US births from 1930 to 2029 in our model, close to its share of the calendar (19.2% of the time). By Mercury sign the share runs between 17.3% and 20.4%, as the table above shows. Mercury turns retrograde three times in most years and four in some, and each retrograde lasts about three weeks.

Nothing actually reverses. NASA's StarChild calls retrograde "an APPARENT change in the movement of the planet through the sky": the faster planet catches up to the slower one and passes it, and for a few weeks Mercury seems to drift backward against the stars. A chart marks a retrograde Mercury with ℞. Some chart programs also flag a Mercury that was at a station, the point where it seems to stand still before turning.

Tradition marks it down. William Lilly counted retrograde motion among a planet's accidental debilities, a weakness of condition rather than of sign. At one birth in five, though, it's an ordinary placement. The sky's own retrograde dates, with their shadow periods, are on the guide to when Mercury goes retrograde in the sky.

How often Mercury changes sign

Mercury changes sign about 15 times a year: 1,484 times from 1930 to 2029, 142 of them moving backward into the previous sign. Any single calendar year from 1925 to 2045 holds between 12 and 19 changes. A clean pass, straight through a sign with no station on the way, takes 13.8 to 20.7 days. When Mercury turns retrograde and direct again inside one sign, the stay stretches to about two months, between 66.5 and 68.7 days on average depending on the sign.

About one visit in four is split by a retrograde: 283 of Mercury's 1,200 visits to a sign from 1930 to 2029. A split visit takes one of two shapes. Mercury enters the sign, backs out and comes in again (142 visits), or it leaves, backs in and then leaves for good (141). A sign table that lists one entry date per sign misses those returns, and with them every birth that falls inside one.

That's also why most people don't need a birth time to find their Mercury sign: most birthdays fall well inside a stay, and the date settles it. On a change day, the birth time decides which side of the line you were born on.

Mercury in the sky versus Mercury in your chart

The sky's Mercury is a transit. Everyone lives with its sign for a few weeks, and the babies born during it keep that sign for life.

Where Mercury is, November 2026

Mercury has been in Scorpio since September 30, 2026, and moves into Sagittarius on December 6, 2026 (US Eastern dates). It has been retrograde since October 24 at 20°58′ Scorpio and turns direct on November 13, 2026, at 5°02′ Scorpio.

FAQ

Which house is worst for Mercury?

Traditional astrologers counted the 6th and the 12th among the weakest houses for any planet, Mercury included: Firmicus Maternus calls each a 'passive house because it is not aspected to the ascendant.' In Book II of his Mathesis (Jean Rhys Bram's 1975 translation) he names the 6th Mala Fortuna, bad fortune, and the 12th Malus Daemon, the bad spirit. A Mercury in either house is still read through its sign and its aspects, and the house itself needs an exact birth time and place.

Can Mercury be my rising sign?

Mercury is a planet, not a rising sign, but it becomes your chart ruler when Gemini or Virgo is rising. Mercury rules both of those signs (Ptolemy, Tetrabiblos I.17), so with either one rising, Mercury is the planet traditionally watched for the chart as a whole. Your rising sign is the sign on the eastern horizon when you were born, so it needs an exact birth time and place, while the Mercury sign usually needs only the date. Mercury can also sit in the same sign as your rising sign. That comes from the hour you were born, and the two stay separate placements.

Why don't I relate to my Mercury sign?

Usually something else in the chart is louder: the planets aspecting Mercury, or a Sun close enough to set its tone. Alan Leo held that Mercury often turns into a copy of the planet aspecting it (1928, p. 313). Evangeline Adams thought a Mercury close to the Sun takes on the Sun's character, so that its quality is 'as a rule, practically that of the Sun himself' (1930, p. 186). And if you were born on a day Mercury changed sign, check the birth time, because the wrong hour gives the wrong Mercury.

Is Mercury negative or positive?

Traditional astrology counts Mercury as neither: it takes on the nature of the planets it touches. William Lilly wrote that 'with the good he is good, with the evil Planets ill,' and Ptolemy gave it to both genders because it can dry or moisten. Ptolemy also sorted it with the day planets when it rises before the Sun as a morning star, and with the night planets as an evening star. In our model, Mercury was a morning star at 49.65% of US births from 1930 to 2029, so the day side and the night side come up about equally.
