Mercury Sign Calculator
Your Mercury sign is the sign Mercury was in when you were born. It is your Sun sign or one of the two signs beside it, because Mercury never strays more than about 28 degrees from the Sun. Enter your birth date and place; add a birth time if Mercury changed sign that day.
Your Mercury sign
Calculated for midday at your birth place. That settles the sign on all but about one birthday in 25; if Mercury changed sign on yours, the card below says so.
Your Mercury, precisely
- The dates Mercury spent in your sign
- Retrograde or direct at your birth?
- Your Mercury and your Sun
Your Mercury has a house, and that's where your thinking goes to work
The sign is how you think and talk. The house says where that shows up most: work, home, love, money. Your free birth chart puts Mercury's sign, house and aspects on one wheel, with the other nine planets:

Why the birth date is usually enough, and when it isn't
Mercury changes sign on about 4% of calendar dates: 1,484 of the 36,525 US Eastern dates from 1930 to 2029. On the other 96% the birth date alone gives the Mercury sign. A quick pass through one sign takes about two to three weeks, so on most days Mercury sits inside a single sign from midnight to midnight, and the place only matters because it sets the time zone.
If you were born on one of those dates, the result depends on your birth time; the calculator checks the exact minute Mercury crossed. Counting every time zone on Earth, the date alone is ambiguous for someone somewhere on 8.5% of dates from 1930 to 2029, so the check starts from your birth place. It allows a few hours either side of your date for time zone borders and daylight saving, and covers every time zone when there's no map location.
The default time matters too. If a calculator assumes noon, it gets the Mercury sign wrong for 0.9% of births in our model of US births from 1930 to 2029. Counted by the clock instead of by births, a noon default is wrong for 1.01% of US Eastern clock minutes from 1930 to 2029, and a midnight default for 1.99%. Leave the time blank on a change day and you get both signs here, with the minute Mercury crossed.

Born with Mercury retrograde
About one birth in five happens while Mercury is retrograde. This calculator checks your birth date against the exact minute of every Mercury station since 1930, not a list of dates, and a birth on the day of a station is marked stationary. The motion is apparent: Mercury never reverses in its orbit, it only seems to drift backward against the stars, for about three weeks at a time, three times in most years and four in some.
Carl Sagan, born in Brooklyn on November 9, 1934, had Mercury retrograde in Scorpio. For the sky's own retrograde dates and their shadow periods, see the Mercury retrograde calendar.
Why Mercury sign tables and calculators disagree
When two tools give different Mercury signs for one birthday, one of these four things is usually the reason:
- Many tables print US Eastern or UT dates, so a birth late in the evening somewhere else can fall on the next or previous date in the table, and on a change day that flips the sign.
- Tables that give one entry date per sign skip the retrograde returns, when Mercury backs into the sign it just left for days or weeks. Every birth inside a return gets the wrong sign. The table behind this calculator keeps each return as its own dated row.
- A tool with no birth time usually assumes one, and noon and midnight give different signs whenever a single sign change fell during the morning.
- Vedic charts use the sidereal zodiac, which today sits about 24 degrees behind the tropical zodiac used here, so they often name the sign before.
Mercury in every sign
Each guide reads one Mercury sign's way of thinking, talking and learning, gives its traditional dignity and the Sun signs it pairs with, and names people born with it:
- Mercury in Aries
Quick to answer and quick to move on; tradition gives Mercury no debility here.
- Mercury in Taurus
Slow to decide, and slower to change its mind once it has.
- Mercury in Gemini (domicile)
One of Mercury's two homes, and the sign it crosses fastest.
- Mercury in Cancer
Thinks through memory and mood, and is not a debilitated Mercury.
- Mercury in Leo
Speaks to be heard, and means it.
- Mercury in Virgo (domicile and exaltation)
Home and exaltation at once: tradition's strongest Mercury.
- Mercury in Libra
Weighs every side before it speaks.
- Mercury in Scorpio
Sharp, private and hard to fool.
- Mercury in Sagittarius (detriment)
In detriment, and still a frank, big-picture thinker.
- Mercury in Capricorn
Careful, structured and drier in its humor than it looks.
- Mercury in Aquarius
Original and independent; its exaltation is Virgo, not Aquarius.
- Mercury in Pisces (detriment and fall)
Detriment and fall in one sign, read as imagination first.
Where Mercury is, November 2026
Mercury has been in Scorpio since September 30, 2026, and moves into Sagittarius on December 6, 2026 (US Eastern dates). It has been retrograde since October 24 at 20°58′ Scorpio and turns direct on November 13, 2026, at 5°02′ Scorpio. Everyone shares this transit. The Mercury sign in your own chart was set when you were born and does not change.
Mercury sign dates, 2025 to 2027
US Eastern dates. Each row runs from the day Mercury entered the sign to the day it moved on, so on both of those dates Mercury spent part of the day in each sign. A retrograde return is Mercury backing into the sign it had just left. The calculator runs the same table for every birth date from 1930 on.

Questions about birth times and Mercury signs
My birthday is a day Mercury changed signs. Which sign do I have?
Your birth time decides it: this calculator shows both candidate signs and the exact moment Mercury crossed, and the time you enter settles which side you were born on. The card gives that moment in UT and in US Eastern time, with the sign before it and the sign after it. Add your time and recalculate, and the result is computed for that minute at your birth place. If you only know roughly when you were born, compare it with the crossing time in your own time zone; a birth well before or well after the crossing is settled either way. In the US, the long-form birth certificate often records the time.
Why do two Mercury sign calculators disagree about the same birthday?
Most disagreements come from a birthday on which Mercury changed sign, read with a different default time or a different date line. A tool that assumes midnight when no time is given and a tool that assumes noon give different signs whenever a single sign change fell that morning. A table printed in UT or in US Eastern dates can put a birth late in the evening somewhere else on the next or previous date. Tables that list one entry date per sign drop the retrograde returns, when Mercury backs into the sign it just left, so every birth inside a return gets the wrong sign. And a Vedic chart is cast in the sidereal zodiac, now about 24 degrees behind our tropical one, so it often names the previous sign.
How does this calculator tell if Mercury was retrograde when I was born?
It compares your birth date and time with the exact minute of every Mercury station since 1930, so it can say direct, retrograde, or stationary that day. A station is the moment Mercury seems to stop before it turns, and each one is held to the minute in UT, from JPL's DE440s ephemeris and checked against PyEphem and the Swiss Ephemeris. Without a birth time the check uses midday at your birth place. When a station falls on your birth date or within a few hours of it, the card says Mercury was stationary: it had all but stopped, whichever side of the turn you were born on.
What house is my Mercury in, and can this calculator show it?
The free birth chart calculator shows Mercury's house and degree; this calculator gives the sign, not the house. The house needs your birth time as well as your place, because the houses turn through all twelve signs about once a day. The sign doesn't: on most dates it holds from midnight to midnight, which is why the time can stay blank here. If you don't know your birth time, the sign and the retrograde check on this page still stand.
