Aries and Capricorn compatibility: whose rules, and who gets to break them
Ask about Capricorn and Aries and you'll usually hear about the clash: fire against earth, impulse against ambition, two signs that both want to lead. Fair enough. But the argument this pair actually has is usually narrower. It's about rules. Who wrote this one, does it still apply tonight, and who's allowed to make an exception?
Mars rules fire-sign Aries, Saturn rules earth-sign Capricorn, and each planet behaves very differently in the other's sign: Mars is exalted in Capricorn, while Saturn is in its depression, the modern fall, in Aries.
Aries and Capricorn compatibility is hard but workable in astrology: fire and earth in a square, two starters with different ideas of order. Expect friction and real respect. Aries tests rules; Capricorn writes and keeps them. The pair works when every shared rule comes with an agreed way to ask for an exception, and a date to change it.

Some signs couldn't be confirmed
A date alone doesn't tell us the birth time or time zone, so we allow extra room around each position. Here that allowance covers two signs, which doesn't mean the planet changed signs that day. Both candidates are shown and this pair is left uninterpreted. The birth chart calculator opens empty, so you can enter either person's details.

Strongest in one sign, weakest in the other
Ptolemy explains both dignities in Tetrabiblos I.19. Mars, 'which by nature is fiery and becomes all the more so in Capricorn because in it he is farthest south', takes Capricorn as its exaltation. Saturn, 'in order to have a position opposite to sun', takes Aries as its depression. Put plainly, the Aries ruler gains strength in Capricorn and the Capricorn ruler loses it in Aries.
Aries drive tends to do its best work inside a structure Capricorn would recognize: a plan, a deadline, a ladder to climb. Saturn's rules, set down on Aries ground, tend to slip. So an Aries partner may thrive on Capricorn's systems at work and still bristle at them at home, where a rule can feel like a fence. Astrologers describe Mars in Capricorn as patient, disciplined drive, and that's the version of Aries energy this pairing can bring out.
Ptolemy also splits the two so-called cardinal signs in I.11. Aries is equinoctial, because as the Sun enters it he 'makes the nights exactly equal to the days'. Capricorn is solstitial, because there 'the sun turns'. One sign begins at a point of balance, the other at a turning point.
The Wednesday guests and the rule with no way out
Picture a rule you've both agreed on: weeknights are quiet, friends come over on weekends. On a Wednesday an old friend is in town for one night, and by eight there are four people in the kitchen. One of you sees a one-off. The other sees an agreement broken without asking. Swap the details for phones at dinner, how long the in-laws stay or who gets the car on Saturdays, and it's the same argument. Astrology hands the rule-keeping to Capricorn and the exceptions to Aries, though the people involved may well have it the other way around.
Write the exception into the rule on the day you make it. Three questions do it. Who can call an exception? How much notice does it need, even if it's a text at five o'clock? How many a month before it stops being an exception? Then give every rule a review date, say three months out. Before that date you ask for an exception. On that date either of you can argue to change the rule itself.
That gives the rule-maker something solid and the rule-breaker a legitimate route instead of a workaround. It also heads off the worst version of this pairing, where one person polices and the other sneaks. When it does go wrong, astrology expects Aries to flare and Capricorn to go cool and formal, and each reads the other's reaction as the bigger offense. Money is the same argument in another form: a budget is a rule, and a spontaneous purchase is an exception.
Mercury in Aries, Mercury in Capricorn: how the rules get argued
Mercury, the planet astrology links with speech, often repeats the square here. Mercury in Aries for the Aries date and Mercury in Capricorn for the Capricorn date turns up in 27.3% of modeled pairs of Aries and Capricorn dates, the second highest of the twelve Aries pairings. In that arrangement the argument tends to sound like the stereotype: quick and blunt on one side, measured and procedural on the other. Across all modeled pairs, the two Mercury signs share an element in 22.7%.
The most common Venus pairing is a different story: Venus in Aries with Venus in Aquarius, at 10.8% of modeled pairs, because Venus was in Aquarius on 34.1% of sampled Capricorn Sun dates. Aries and Aquarius sit two signs apart, a sextile, which astrology counts as an easy angle. So a couple whose Suns square may find affection is the easy part and the house rules are the hard part. The Aries and Capricorn calculator shows which Mercury and Venus signs your two birthdays give.
In bed, the exalted Mars reading helps. Astrology reads desire in this pairing as slow-building and deliberate, which can suit an Aries who's tired of always being the one who starts things. The friction is pace: Aries wants it now, Capricorn wants to warm up. Ask what each of you wants, and don't let a rule about routine end up running your affection as well.

Most common Venus pairings in this model: Aries with Aquarius (10.8%), Taurus with Aquarius (8.4%), Pisces with Aquarius (8.2%). Venus signs are listed in Aries Sun, then Capricorn Sun order. Mars can occupy any sign with either Sun sign. The most frequent Mars signs on sampled Aries dates are Taurus (14.3%), Gemini (12.3%), Aries (11.4%), Aquarius (10.2%), and on Capricorn dates Scorpio (13.8%), Sagittarius (12.6%), Aquarius (12%), Libra (11.2%).
We calculated Sun, Mercury, Venus and Mars at noon UTC for each of the 20,454 calendar days from January 1, 1950, to December 31, 2005, and gave every date equal weight. Pair figures combine one Aries date and one Capricorn date drawn independently; the Saturn share uses the same daily sample. Saturn's ingress dates are US Eastern. None of these numbers describes how couples behave or whether they last.
The supper club test: friends who run something together
Take two friends who run a rec league team, a supper club or a small business on the side. One writes the process and keeps the spreadsheet. The other wants to skip three steps because the customer's waiting. Both are useful. The trouble is deciding, in the moment, whose call it is.
Split it by area before you need to. One person owns the money and the schedule; the other owns new ideas and the first conversation with anyone outside. Anything that touches both areas waits for a real conversation, not a text sent mid-argument. Astrology ties Capricorn's earth element to exactly this kind of practical structure.
Saturn's two years in Aries, and what lasts
Saturn re-entered Aries on February 13, 2026, and leaves for Taurus on April 12, 2028, so for those two years the planet of rules passes through the sign where Ptolemy calls it weakest. Astrologers read Saturn's time in Aries as a test of anything built on impulse alone.
Saturn was in Aries at birth on only 9.6% of sampled Aries Sun dates from 1950 to 2005, all of them in the Aries seasons of 1967 to 1969 or 1996 to 1998 (in 1996, only from April 7). For those birthdays, Saturn comes back to its exact birth degree at some point between February 2026 and April 2028: a Saturn return, the first for the 1996 to 1998 group and the second for 1967 to 1969. Everyone else has Saturn in another sign, so the depression describes the sign, not every Aries person.
For the long run, the square doesn't decide anything on its own. Among the Aries pairings side by side, this is one of two squares; Aries with Cancer is the other, fire against water rather than earth. Mars to Saturn across the two charts is where this couple's rules argument shows up most plainly: one person's Saturn conjunct, square or opposite the other's Mars, or the reverse. Astrologers read that contact as the limit-setter and the limit-tester built in. Finding it needs each person's birth chart and a comparison of the two.
When the Capricorn wants the full kitchen
In some couples the roles run backward. Say the Aries has Venus in Aries and the Capricorn has Venus in Aquarius, the most common Venus pairing for these Suns at 10.8% of modeled pairs, rather than a Capricorn Venus, which turns up with the Aries Venus in 6.7%.
Back to the Wednesday. This Capricorn may be the one who loves a full kitchen and an open door, and the Aries the one asking why nobody checked first. They still need to agree when an unexpected guest is welcome.

Aries and Capricorn questions
What attracts Capricorn to Aries?
Capricorn admires drive, astrologers say, and Aries has plenty of it. Aries also says what it wants, which saves Capricorn the guessing. Traditional astrology adds a twist: Mars, the Aries ruler, is exalted in Capricorn, so Aries energy at its most focused looks a lot like something Capricorn already values.
Why do Aries and Capricorn butt heads?
Both signs are cardinal, so both expect to set the direction. Aries pushes against limits and Capricorn builds them. The clash usually comes over one specific rule rather than the whole relationship. Agree who owns which decisions, and give every shared rule an exception process and a review date.
Are Aries and Capricorn good business partners?
Often, yes, in astrology's reading. Aries brings speed and the nerve to pitch; Capricorn brings structure and follow-through. Divide ownership clearly, with money and process on one side and new ideas and first contact on the other, and write down how a disagreement gets settled before the first one happens.
Can Aries and Capricorn last long term?
Yes. Astrology reads the square as friction that builds something, and these two share a respect for effort. The long-term risk is a rulebook only one person wrote. Put a date on the calendar to review your shared rules, and check both Venus signs, since the most common Venus pairing for these Suns is an easy one.
