Two fire signs and no built-in brake

Mars-ruled Aries and Sagittarius sit 120 degrees apart on the wheel, forming a trine, which astrology reads as two signs that understand each other with little effort. Both belong to the fire element, linked with enthusiasm, directness and a low tolerance for boredom. Aries is cardinal, the kind of sign that gets a plan started. Sagittarius is mutable and happy to change the plan once it's moving.

Ptolemy's version of the fire signs has a twist. His first triangle, Aries, Leo and Sagittarius, 'was assigned to the sun and Jupiter, since Mars is not of the solar sect', with the Sun governing it by day and Jupiter by night (Tetrabiblos I.18). So the popular line that Mars rules the fire triangle is a modern gloss. The night ruler of the Aries triangle is Jupiter, Sagittarius's own planet, while Mars, the Aries ruler, gets no share of it at all.

In astrology Jupiter is the planet of growth and possibility, so a triangle governed partly by Jupiter leans toward yes.

The Saturday yes: a puppy, a lease and nobody's calendar

Back to the market. The puppy is an adoption fee today and fifteen years of early walks. In plenty of couples one person would say 'let's sleep on it' without thinking. In this one, you may both be reaching for a wallet. The same thing happens with a second job, a friend who needs your spare room 'for a few weeks', or three weekends in a row booked by whichever of you saw the invitation first.

Agree now which decisions need a night to think. Anything you can't undo within a month (a pet, a lease, a loan, a new job) gets a one-night pause if either of you asks for it. The word is 'overnight', and nobody has to explain why. The yes stays on the table. The person who called the pause owes one question by the next evening: who walks the dog, where does the money come from, what are we saying no to instead?

A no from a fire sign often sounds like 'you're being reckless', and a fire sign hears that as an insult. 'Overnight' is a rule you both signed up to, so it doesn't judge anyone. Swap the role, too. If one of you always ends up as the brake, that person starts to feel like the parent and the other like the fun one, and resentment builds fast from there.

Mercury makes the yes fast

Aries birthdays put Mercury in Pisces, Aries or Taurus, and Sagittarius birthdays put it in Scorpio, Sagittarius or Capricorn. Pair the dates up and the Mercury signs end up in the same element in 38.7% of modeled pairs of dates, the highest of the twelve Aries pairings. Both Mercury signs match their Suns, Mercury in Aries with Mercury in Sagittarius, in 28.1%, also the highest of the twelve.

In astrology Mercury describes how you think and talk, and fire Mercuries talk fast. If your conversations race, check that you actually agreed on something. An excited reply can hide the question nobody answered, and it's usually 'can we afford this?'

Both Venus signs land in fire in only 6.4% of modeled pairs, because Sagittarius Sun dates most often have Venus in Scorpio (34.0%) or Capricorn (28.5%). So the partner who's first to say yes to the plan may want something slower and more private from love. The Aries and Sagittarius date-sample estimates

These estimates pair two dates drawn independently from the 1950–2005 sample, with equal weight for every date within each Sun sign. They describe planetary combinations, not observed couples or relationship success.

Most common Venus pairings in this model: Aries with Scorpio (10.8%), Aries with Capricorn (9%), Taurus with Scorpio (8.4%). Venus signs are listed in Aries Sun, then Sagittarius Sun order. Mars can occupy any sign with either Sun sign. The most frequent Mars signs on sampled Aries dates are Taurus (14.3%), Gemini (12.3%), Aries (11.4%), Aquarius (10.2%), and on Sagittarius dates Libra (15%), Scorpio (14.9%), Capricorn (11.2%), Aquarius (11.2%).

Figures come from one noon-UTC chart for every calendar day from January 1, 1950, to December 31, 2005 (20,454 days), with Sun, Mercury, Venus and Mars calculated for each and every date weighted equally. A pair figure combines one Aries date and one Sagittarius date drawn independently. It counts sky combinations on dates and says nothing about how couples behave or whether they stay together.

Sex and affection when one Venus runs cooler

Astrology usually rates this pair highly in bed, and early on it's often easy: two people who like spontaneity and don't need much ceremony. The difference tends to show up later, when one of you wants variety and the other wants it to mean something.

A Sagittarius with Venus in Scorpio tends to want depth before novelty and keeps desire private. One with Venus in Capricorn comes across as loyal, deliberate and slow to show it. Neither fits the 'wild Sagittarius' cliché. The cliché fits best when the Sagittarius has Venus in Sagittarius itself, which happened on 20.1% of sampled Sagittarius Sun dates.

So ask instead of assuming. 'More new things, or more of the same thing done slowly?' is a fair question for two fire Suns, and the answer can shift with the season. Astrologers associate Mars in Sagittarius with wanting room to experiment; if either of you has it, ask whether that description fits.

When fire-sign friends fall out

You'll both say yes to the concert, the last-minute dinner, the plan that starts with 'this is stupid, but'. The common complaint runs the other way. After one real argument, a friend goes quiet for weeks or walks off for good, and the other is left wondering whether the friendship was as solid as it felt.

Astrology gives the two signs different tempers. Aries tends to flare and forget, while Sagittarius says the blunt thing as a joke and doesn't notice it stuck. Neither likes long talks about feelings, so arguments either blow over in an hour or never get discussed at all. Try splitting the two questions. Send the plain message first: 'Still on for Thursday?' That tells your friend the friendship isn't in doubt. Then deal with the actual disagreement face to face, in five minutes rather than fifty.

Two people who love a yes, ten years on

Long term, the risk here is drift more than a blow-up. Plans multiply, both of you stay busy, and three years later you realize you've had a great time and never decided where you're going. Commitment can come slowly, because both signs like a door left open. Freedom is rarely the fight it is in other pairings, since both of you want room. Jealousy, when it comes, is usually about attention: one person's plans filling the calendar while the other waits to be asked.

In the first, you both say yes on the spot, and by July nobody remembers who agreed to water it. In the third, one says no and offers a later date: 'Ask me again in spring, when work's calmer.'

Only the first reply leaves the plot to chance. Sleeping on an offer is allowed, and so is liking it and saying no.

Venus can decide which reply you hear first. An Aries with Venus in Aries next to a Sagittarius with Venus in Sagittarius is the both-fire arrangement, 6.4% of modeled pairs, and astrology would expect two quick yeses.
