The case against Taurus and Sagittarius, and its limits

Ptolemy describes disjunct signs as lacking the major aspect relationships, including separations of five signs, in Tetrabiblos I.16. Modern astrology calls the five-sign relationship a quincunx and reads it as requiring adjustment. Taurus and Sagittarius share neither element nor modality. That's the basis of the difficult-match label, not a measurement of relationship outcomes.

A concrete version might involve a Saturday plan. One person has bought ingredients for dinner; the other wants to take a last-minute trip. The first hears 'our plan didn't matter'; the second hears 'we can never change anything.' Neither interpretation follows automatically. Say what you want before interpreting a quick departure as rejection. Physical preferences also need their own words. Mars in Sagittarius and Mars in Taurus offer contrasting themes of exploration and pace; neither Sun sign establishes either Mars placement.

Marriage, money and the settling-down question

Marriage doesn't have to mean identical routines. A couple can want a reliable home, independent friendships and occasional solo travel at the same time. If you're discussing commitment, get specific about how much time you'll share and which decisions require both people's agreement.

Money makes the discussion concrete. After shared costs and agreed savings, you might each have an amount to spend without permission. That can give one person room for a trip and the other room for a long-planned purchase. The amounts should fit your circumstances; a zodiac sign doesn't tell you who saves responsibly or spends carelessly.

Venus in Scorpio or Capricorn: the four-planet count

Venus stays within about 48 degrees of the Sun as seen from Earth, as shown in the University of Nebraska's elongation guide. A Sagittarius Sun can therefore have Venus in Libra, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Capricorn or Aquarius. Our 1950–2005 daily sample puts Scorpio at 34.0%, Capricorn at 28.5%, Sagittarius at 20.1%, Aquarius at 10.5% and Libra at 6.9%.

Scorpio's themes of depth and Capricorn's themes of responsibility widen the Venus reading beyond freedom alone. They don't establish that 62.5% of Sagittarius people want marriage. These are equally weighted dates, not surveyed people. For Taurus Sun dates, the leading Venus signs were Aries at 34.3%, Gemini at 30.9% and Taurus at 20.5%.

We model pair combinations by independently drawing a date from each Sun-sign group. Venus repeats Taurus and Sagittarius in 4.1% of combinations. Mercury repeats those signs in 28.0%, and 29.8% of combinations share a Mercury element. Those are different ways of describing the placements, not compatibility scores. Mars led with Libra for Sagittarius Sun dates at 15.0%, narrowly ahead of Scorpio at 14.9%; Gemini led Taurus's at 15.3%. The Taurus and Sagittarius date-sample estimates

These estimates pair two dates drawn independently from the 1950–2005 sample, with equal weight for every date within each Sun sign. They describe planetary combinations, not observed couples or relationship success.

Most common Venus pairings in this model: Aries with Scorpio (11.7%), Gemini with Scorpio (10.5%), Aries with Capricorn (9.8%). Venus signs are listed in Taurus Sun, then Sagittarius Sun order. Mars can occupy any sign with either Sun sign. The most frequent Mars signs on sampled Taurus dates are Gemini (15.3%), Taurus (13.4%), Cancer (11.8%), Aries (9.9%), and on Sagittarius dates Libra (15%), Scorpio (14.9%), Capricorn (11.2%), Aquarius (11.2%).

The sample covers all 20,454 calendar dates from 1 January 1950 to 31 December 2005, with planetary signs computed at noon UTC and every date weighted equally. Pair percentages multiply the Taurus and Sagittarius placement shares as independent draws, without an age-gap restriction. They describe possible combinations in this model, not a sample of actual births or relationships. They provide no evidence about commitment, marriage or compatibility. Percentages are rounded.

Try these questions while you still have time to think about the answers. They're useful whether the sign descriptions fit neatly or hardly at all.

• Directness. What helps you hear criticism, and what makes it feel contemptuous? Being honest doesn't remove responsibility for how you speak.
• Time apart. Name the trips, friendships and interests you'd like to keep independently. Ask the other person what amount of shared time they want.
• Firm plans. Separate a suggestion from a promise when you make it, especially if money or other people are involved.
• Personal spending. Agree on shared costs and goals before deciding what each person can spend freely.

Change one Venus placement, keep the same question about commitment

For an illustrative reading, keep a Taurus Sun with Venus in Taurus. Compare a Sagittarius Sun with Venus in Sagittarius to one with Venus in Capricorn. Both Sun and Venus combinations occur in the date sample; we're leaving Mercury, Mars and the rest of the charts unspecified.

Venus in Sagittarius gives an astrologer a reason to ask about freedom and shared discovery. Venus in Capricorn adds questions about reliability, responsibility and what you want to build over time. Neither placement tells the Taurus partner whether they will be left. In both readings, the practical question stays the same: what are you each willing to commit to, and what freedom do you want inside that commitment?
