What Chiron in the 4th House Says About Home, and What It Can't Say About Your Parents
A 4th-house Chiron is not evidence that your childhood home failed you, and it won't keep you from feeling at home somewhere. The house can't record what happened in the place you grew up.
What modern astrologers read here is a sensitivity about belonging: home, roots, family and the feeling of being safe. Zane Stein, the first to write about it, saw people who treat the whole world as family.
Quick answer
Chiron in the 4th house isn't evidence of a bad childhood or a failing parent, and it doesn't stop you from making a home. It means Chiron sat in the lowest part of your chart, the house of home, family and roots, when you were born. Modern astrologers read it as a tender spot around belonging and feeling safe.
| The fear, answered | A childhood home that failed you? The house can't record what happened there |

| What the house covers | Home, family, roots, private life |
| Our data point | In our model of 400,000 simulated U.S. births from 1940 to 2024, built on CDC birth-time data, 16.2% of 4th-house Chirons sat within 5 degrees of the IC |

Chiron's house needs the right year as well as the right clock. In our model of 400,000 simulated U.S. births from 1940 to 2024, built on CDC birth-time data, a birth year one off, with the same date and clock time, moved Chiron into another house in about 1 chart in 4 (25.6%), as often as a half-hour clock error. A Chiron close to the IC can slip into the 3rd on a few minutes' difference.
See whether Chiron sits on your IC or deeper in the 4th →What the 4th house can't record about where you grew up
The 4th house covers home in the widest sense: the house you grew up in, the family you came from, your roots and the private life you keep away from the world. Our houses guide shows how the 4th fits into the full set of houses, opposite the public 10th. Chiron here is read as a tender spot in that territory, but it doesn't tell anyone what happened there. No placement records a divorce, a move, a loss or anything a parent did or didn't do, and the house looks the same in a loving home and a hard one.
Hard childhoods are common, and they turn up in every kind of chart. A CDC analysis of survey data from 2011 to 2020, published in 2023, found that "Overall, 63.9% of U.S. adults reported at least one ACE; 17.3% reported four or more ACEs," where an ACE is an adverse childhood experience (Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report, June 30, 2023). Those figures cover U.S. adults of every Chiron house.
Liz Greene, who discusses Chiron in the 4th and 10th houses in Chiron in Love (The Wessex Astrologer, 2023), reads the placement as a way of seeing your parents, not a record of their choices. In her account a parent's real history can make that view easy to hold, yet what the chart describes is the one doing the seeing. So if your childhood was hard, it was hard on its own terms. The chart didn't cause it, and it doesn't prove it either.
Chiron right at the IC, or further into the house
The IC, short for Imum Coeli, Latin for "the bottom of the sky," is the point of the zodiac below you when you were born, and on a Placidus chart it's where the 4th house begins. In our model of 400,000 simulated U.S. births from 1940 to 2024, built on CDC birth-time data, 16.2% of fourth-house Chirons sat within 5 degrees of the IC, the lowest point of the chart, counting 5 degrees of zodiac longitude.
A Chiron that close is usually read as conjunct the IC, and astrologers give a planet or a point on an angle extra weight, so the home theme is often read as louder. But "conjunct the IC" and "in the 4th house" aren't the same thing. A Chiron 3 degrees before the IC sits in the 3rd house and still counts as conjunct it, inside the same 5 degrees. A Chiron 20 degrees past it is in the 4th and nowhere near the angle.
Chiron near the IC is also sensitive to the birth time. House cusps turn about a degree every 4 minutes, so 5 degrees is roughly 20 minutes of birth time. If your Chiron sits within a few degrees of the IC, check the time on the birth certificate before you settle on the 3rd or the 4th.
The house system moves it too. Our charts use Placidus, the usual method, which builds the houses from the exact birth time and place; whole-sign houses give each house one entire sign, counted from the rising sign. In the same model, 57% of Placidus 4th-house Chirons count as 5th-house Chirons in whole-sign houses, so another site may well show you a 5th-house Chiron.

Check today's sky against your birth chart →For parents looking at a baby's chart
Of all the Chiron houses, this is the one parents ask about most, often with a newborn's chart open. "I don't want his wound to be here at home," one parent wrote on Reddit after finding Chiron in a son's 4th house. So here is the plain answer. The chart doesn't say you'll hurt your child, and it doesn't name a mother or a father.
Start with the sign. Most babies born from April 17, 2018 to April 13, 2027 have Chiron in Aries; the exceptions are births from September 25, 2018 to February 17, 2019, when Chiron was back in Pisces, and from June 19 to September 17, 2026, when it was in Taurus (US Eastern dates). On a day Chiron changes sign, the birth time decides which one a baby has. Most children in the same few school years share that sign. The house is what differs between siblings, and it comes from the hour and the month. For a baby born with Chiron in Aries (about 1968 to 1977, or from 2018) in the 8 a.m. hour in November, the same model puts Chiron in the 4th about 66% of the time. A November morning birth tells you when your baby arrived, not what kind of home they arrived in.
"Our parents didn't put Chiron into our charts," Greene writes. In her reading a 4th-house Chiron belongs to the child's way of seeing, and a brother or sister raised by the same mother or father may see that parent quite differently. The house can't tell a mother from a father, and it can't tell a hard home from a happy one.
If you want something to do with the information, keep it light. Notice what helps your child feel settled, as you would anyway; a chart that says Chiron 4H doesn't ask for more than that. And if a reading online tells you the wound comes from your home, set it aside. A house placement can't establish what happened in a family.
Four writers on Chiron in the 4th, and where they split
Every one of these readings is modern. Charles Kowal found Chiron in 1977, and the oldest house-by-house reading we found is Zane Stein's, from 1983, so no ancient or traditional text says anything about Chiron in the 4th. The myth is older, and in the ancient accounts our guide quotes, Chiron's own wound was an accident, a poisoned arrow nobody aimed at him. Our guide sets out what the Greek sources say about Chiron's wound, including where the modern "wounded healer" label came from.
Stein's reading has nothing to say about parents or a hard childhood. "These people feel a very strong tie to humanity," he wrote (Zane B. Stein, Interpreting Chiron, 2nd ed., 1983, p. B5). He saw people who want to lift others up, take the side of ordinary people and treat the whole world as family, and who get upset when someone they know is left out. He described two types, a shy one who feels undervalued and a respected one who stays tough under fire, and said both like to work.
Barbara Hand Clow pointed to roots: "Chiron's presence in the fourth house signifies that the deepest healing of the self will come from a connection with roots" (Chiron: Rainbow Bridge Between the Inner and Outer Planets, 2nd ed., Llewellyn, 1993, pp. 55-56). She described people who recognize suffering in others and show strong compassion, teachers of depth who are often misunderstood.
Lisa Tahir turns the house into questions, starting with "Was there consistent love and nurturing in your home?" (The Chiron Effect, 2020, p. 85). She asks them of the reader; they aren't a reading of anyone's past. That's where the writers split. Stein widened family to all of humanity and never mentioned a childhood home. Tahir and most popular readings go straight to the home you grew up in, while Greene says the chart shows the lens you see your parents through.
Who has a 4th-house Chiron, by sign and by decade
Chiron in the 4th house is not Chiron in Cancer, the birth-year placement often blended with this one. Cancer is the 4th house's natural sign, but the sign comes from the birth date and is often shared with people born a few years either side of you, while the house comes from the birth time and place.
The decade still nudges the odds. In the same model, births in the 1950s had a 4th-house Chiron in 9.9% of modeled charts, births in the 1980s in 6.8%, because Chiron's sign in those years changed how long its degree stayed below the horizon. The signs people search most often with this house tend to read like this:
- Aries (born about 1968 to 1977, or from 2018). Acting first and taking up room. In the 4th it can look like being the first to leave home, or needing one room that nobody else gets a say in. Chiron in Aries, from Gen X to the 2018 to 2027 babies.
- Taurus (about 1976 to 1984, and babies born June 19 to September 17, 2026, with the birth time deciding on those two days). Worth, money and safety. Here home becomes something you want to hold in your hands: the lease, the mortgage, the kitchen that's yours. Chiron in Taurus and the safety question.
- Scorpio (about late 1946 to late 1948, or 1997 to 1999). Trust and control. In the 4th it tends to show in who you let into the house, and how much the family tells each other. Chiron in Scorpio, read for the late 1990s births.
- Sagittarius (about 1949 to 1951, or 1999 to 2001). Belief and meaning. Here it can be a home run by strong beliefs, or a sense that home is somewhere far away. The Sagittarius Chiron and the search for meaning.
Three charts with Chiron in the 4th, and the homes that moved
These three well-known charts show the kind of home story astrologers read into this house. Houses here are Placidus. Each birth time comes from Astro-Databank, rated AA (from a birth record) or A (from the person or family), and in each chart Chiron stays in the 4th with the birth time moved 30 minutes either way. One chart proves nothing.
Denzel Washington (Rodden AA; born 12:09 a.m., December 28, 1954, Mount Vernon, New York) has Chiron at 27°23′ Capricorn in the 4th, in whole-sign houses too. When he was 14 his parents divorced, and his mother sent him to Oakland Military Academy, a private preparatory school in New Windsor, New York.
Stephen King (Rodden A; born 1:30 a.m., September 21, 1947, Portland, Maine) has Chiron at 7°42′ Scorpio in the 4th in Placidus houses, and in the 5th in whole-sign houses. His mother raised him and his older brother David on her own, and when he was 11 the family moved to Durham, Maine, where she cared for her own parents.
Miley Cyrus (Rodden AA; born 4:19 p.m., November 23, 1992, Nashville, Tennessee) has Chiron at 23°27′ Leo in the 4th, in whole-sign houses too; Wikipedia gives nearby Franklin as her birthplace, and Chiron is in the 4th there as well. Her first acting role was in her father Billy Ray Cyrus's television series Doc, and when she was eight the family moved to Toronto while he filmed it.
When the moving Chiron reaches the 4th
Searches for this placement often mean the moving Chiron, which visits each house for years at a time, rather than the birth Chiron, which never leaves your 4th.
Transit note, October 2026
Chiron first entered Taurus on June 19, 2026, moved back into Aries by retrograde motion on September 17, 2026, and re-enters Taurus for good on April 14, 2027 (US Eastern dates). In whole-sign houses that puts transiting Chiron in the 4th house for Capricorn risings until then, and when it reaches Taurus the same transit passes to Aquarius risings. It has been retrograde since August 3, 2026, at 0°52′ Taurus, and turns direct on January 6, 2027. On a Placidus chart the timing depends on where your own house cusps fall. This is a transit, not the birth placement this page is about.
From April 14, 2027 to May 5, 2034 (US Eastern dates), apart from a few months in Gemini in 2033, Chiron's long Taurus stay puts it in the whole-sign 4th house of Aquarius rising charts, about seven years of Chiron at the base of the chart. Read as a transit, those years bring home, family and the question of where you belong into focus; the transit itself doesn't cause a move or a family break.
Your own Chiron return comes at about ages 48 to 51, when the moving Chiron reaches its birth degree again, back in your 4th house.
Someone else's Chiron landing in your 4th, a partner's or a parent's, is a separate question. That's synastry, which compares two charts, and your own 4th-house Chiron doesn't name a person.
Making a home that holds
Clow's line about roots turns into plain tasks: learning where your family came from, keeping the recipes and stories that matter to you, or choosing roots of your own in a town you decide to stay in. Tahir's questions work best on paper, answered privately, as questions and not as charges against anyone.
Cafe Astrology's page calls the 4th-house version "'bottomless pit' energy, a feeling of insatiability or never being satisfied." At home that can look like redoing the kitchen once more, or moving again in search of a feeling a new address can't supply. Noticing that pull before you sign the next lease is the practical part.
Stein's reading suggests another route, a home built from people: the friends you host at the holidays, the neighbor you check on, the table with one more chair than you need. The catch modern readings point to is the person who makes everyone else's home feel safe and still doesn't feel settled in their own, so leave room to be looked after too.
The 4th sits opposite the 10th, private life against public life, and the career end of this axis, Chiron in the 10th, carries the same sensitivity into work and reputation.

FAQ
My baby has Chiron in the 4th house. Does that mean our home will hurt them?
No. A 4th-house Chiron can't tell you what will happen in your home, and it doesn't name a mother or a father. Liz Greene, in Chiron in Love (2023), reads a 4th or 10th-house Chiron as the lens a child comes to see their parents through, rather than a record of what the parents did. Two siblings raised in the same house can see the same parent very differently. The house your baby's Chiron fell in records the hour they were born. Noticing what helps your child feel settled, as you would anyway, is all the placement asks.
Our two children both have Chiron in Aries. Why is it in the 4th house for only one of them?
Because Chiron's sign stays the same for years at a time, while the house comes from the hour, the date and the place of birth. Most babies born from 2018 to early 2027 share Chiron in Aries, but the 4th house is a slice of the sky below the horizon when a baby is born, and that slice turns with the clock. In our model of 400,000 simulated U.S. births from 1940 to 2024, built on CDC birth-time data, a birth time 30 minutes off moved Chiron into another house in about 1 chart in 4, so two births on different days and hours can easily differ. The difference records when each child was born, not how either one is being raised.
If Chiron is in my 4th house, will I keep moving and never feel settled?
No placement decides how often you move or whether a place will ever feel like home. Modern writers read a 4th-house Chiron as a sensitivity about belonging, and Cafe Astrology describes a feeling that home is never quite enough, which is a feeling about places, not a forecast of your next lease. Zane Stein, whose 1983 reading is the oldest we read, went another way and described people who treat the whole world as family. The house points to a practical question: what makes a place feel safe to you?
