Family, Home and Chiron in Cancer, Plus the Opposition That Arrives at 13

Zodiac ring with the Cancer arc in terracotta and Chiron's yearly positions dotted on its orbit.

Chiron in Cancer doesn't mean your family hurt you, and it doesn't decide whether you'll ever feel at home. It's a birth-date fact. Babies born from June 21, 1988 to July 20, 1991 got it, in loving homes and hard ones alike, and so did most babies born between late 1937 and mid-1941. A placement can't record what a parent did.

The first Chiron writers tied Cancer to security, family and belonging. And the sky gave this generation something no other Chiron sign gets so early: its Chiron opposition, at around 13.

Quick answer

Chiron in Cancer is the placement of people born from June 21, 1988 to July 20, 1991, one unbroken stretch, and of a 1937 to 1941 generation before them. Modern astrologers tie it to belonging, family and feeling safe. It doesn't say your family hurt you, and it doesn't rule out a home and family of your own.

Born with itJune 21, 1988 to July 20, 1991 (ages 35 to 38 in 2026); 1937 to 1941 in three stretches (ages 85 to 89)

Does Chiron in Cancer mean your family hurt you?

No. Chiron's sign is shared by about three years of babies, so it can't record what one family did. Between June 21, 1988 and July 20, 1991 it went to children of happy marriages and messy divorces, to only children and to the youngest of five. No placement predicts abuse, neglect, a divorce or an estrangement.

Family rifts are common across every birth year. A 2020 Cornell Chronicle report on Karl Pillemer's book Fault Lines gave these figures: "27% of Americans 18 and older had cut off contact with a family member, most of whom reported that they were upset by such a rift," and "10% reported being estranged from a parent or child." Those numbers describe U.S. adults of every Chiron sign. If your family is one of them, your chart didn't cause it, and it didn't sentence you to it either.

Chiron's own myth has a mother story. In Hyginus's version (Fabulae 138), Philyra saw she had borne "a strange species" and asked to be changed into another form, and she became a linden tree. It's the closest the myth comes to the "mother wound" label that turns up in searches for this placement, and it's a story about a centaur's birth, not yours.

Will you ever feel at home?

Nothing in the placement rules it out. The readings describe how much home matters, not whether you'll get one. Stein's 1983 entry opens with a single word, "Security!", and goes on: "Nothing must stand in their way, as they work to achieve this." For him family was something these people defend, "a personal imperative to protect the self and family at all costs" (Zane Stein, Interpreting Chiron, 2nd ed., 1983, p. B10).

Lass, writing in 2002, put the fear plainly: "The core belief and feeling that love will never be found, that it was lost, that it was never there" (Martin Lass, Musings of a Rogue Comet, 2nd ed., 2002, ch. 5). Stein stresses protecting family; Lass describes the fear that love isn't there.

From a parent's side it looks different again. If a mother looks up her 1990-born son's chart and spots Chiron in Cancer, she might read it as a verdict on her parenting. But her son shares that sign with every child in his school year and most of the children in the years on either side. His birth time and place establish Chiron's house, and its aspects add more context, though other people share those too.

In a relationship, the theme can raise a practical question: which family habits do you want to keep, and which would you rather change? At work it can look like caretaking, holding a team together, or what Stein called "bridging the generations," taking "things from the past" and making them useful again. The lesson he names is about feelings: "One of their major lessons to learn is to control their emotions."

One unbroken stretch: who was born with it

On JPL Horizons positions, with US Eastern dates, Chiron crossed Cancer in one unbroken stretch from June 21, 1988 to July 20, 1991: no retrograde dip back into Gemini, no early step into Leo. Chiron entered Cancer at 5:40 a.m. EDT on June 21, 1988 and left for Leo at 11:54 a.m. EDT on July 21, 1991, so a birth on either of those days needs the birth time.

The older Cancer generation, 85 to 89 years old in 2026, is messier. It came in three stretches: August 27 to November 21, 1937; May 28, 1938 to September 28, 1940; and December 27, 1940 to June 15, 1941. The gap in late 1940 belongs to Leo, which is why John Lennon, born October 9, 1940, had Chiron just inside Leo (0°33′) and not in Cancer, as a birth-year list would say.

In our count, 4.9% of U.S. births from 1940 to 2024 have Chiron in Cancer (15.72 million births): 12.54 million from the 1988 to 1991 window and 3.18 million from 1940 and 1941. We spread each year's NCHS annual birth totals (1940 to 2018; 2019 to 2024 from NCHS's Births: Final Data reports and 2024 natality file) evenly over its days and checked Chiron's sign hour by hour, so these count births, not people living in 2026.

Rupert Grint (born August 24, 1988; Chiron at 5°22′ Cancer), Daniel Radcliffe (July 23, 1989; 11°02′) and Emma Watson (April 15, 1990; 11°17′) were born within 20 months of one another, and all three have Chiron in Cancer. Taylor Swift (December 13, 1989; 15°02′) has it too, and so does Al Pacino (April 25, 1940; 15°04′) from the older group (degrees for noon UT on each birth date). Sharing the placement doesn't mean their family lives were alike, and a handful of famous charts proves nothing.

One more source of mixed answers: a few sites use a "true sidereal" zodiac and can show a different Chiron sign for the same birth date, while this page uses the tropical zodiac of most Western astrology. Our guide to Chiron in astrology explains the difference.

An opposition at 13, younger than any other Chiron sign

The moving Chiron opposes its birth position once a lap, at an age that depends on the sign. Natal Chiron in Cancer meets its opposition youngest of all twelve signs: at a median age of 13.2, and never later than 14.3, for birth dates from 1900 to 2026. Across all birth dates in those years, the median is 26.7.

The orbit explains it. After Cancer, Chiron runs through Leo, Virgo, Libra, Scorpio and Sagittarius, the five signs it crosses fastest, each in under two and a half years on average. The first square comes even earlier, at a median age of 6.3.

For people born from 1988 to 1991, the square came in 1995 to 1996 and the opposition from 2001 to 2005, while Chiron crossed Capricorn, the sign opposite Cancer. Babies born in those years carry that sign natally, and the Capricorn end of the axis, achievement that never feels like enough, has its own page. Exact timing depends on the natal degree. For this group the opposition fell somewhere between seventh grade and the first year of high school.

Neptune on the far side for a third of these births

Our count puts Chiron on JPL Horizons positions and the planets on Swiss Ephemeris. Of U.S. births from 1940 to 2024 with Chiron in Cancer, 35% came while Chiron was within 5 degrees of opposing Neptune. The exact oppositions fell on July 18, 1989, January 18, 1990 and May 26, 1990, with Chiron in Cancer and Neptune across the zodiac in Capricorn, the sign it held through most of 1984 to 1998, as the Millennial Neptune in Capricorn guide dates in full.

Saturn and Uranus were on the far side as well: 23.0% of these births came with Saturn opposite and 24.6% with Uranus opposite, within the same 5 degrees. In astrology Neptune stands for longing and ideals, so a reader with this pairing may hear the home theme as a longing for an ideal family. The data only shows the geometry.

Clow's "very difficult position", and the generation she meant

Is Chiron in Cancer a hard placement? Barbara Hand Clow thought so: "No one has mentioned it so far, but Chiron in Cancer is a very difficult position because the native is tied to the past" (Barbara Hand Clow, Chiron, 2nd ed., Llewellyn 1993, ch. 7). But she was writing about people "born in the depths of World War II to parents who feared for their own survival," the 1937 to 1941 group. The 1988 to 1991 babies were born into a different world, and her reason doesn't carry over to them.

Stein, the earliest writer, didn't call it hard at all. He expected these people to be "more in tune with their emotions than is the average person." Lass framed it as a lack, the frame search results lead with. So the fair answer depends on the writer, and on the chart: what Chiron touches counts for more than a sign shared with many people your age. And no placement predicts an illness, a breakup or a lost family.

A Chiron touching the Moon, Cancer's traditional ruler, gets read as a louder version of the home theme. Aspects to the Sun and the slow planets can be checked from the birth date, while aspects to the Moon or the rising sign need the time. The house adds the setting, such as home, work or partners, and needs a birth time and place. In our count, 37.3% of U.S. births with Chiron in Cancer came while it was retrograde, which the date settles except on a station day. A retrograde planet works more inwardly in some modern readings, but none of the Chiron writers quoted on this page makes that a rule.

A comet's haze, seen while this generation was being born

Chiron had been known for only about eleven years when this group arrived. Charles Kowal spotted it on November 1, 1977, on photographic plates taken at Palomar Observatory that October, so every reading of Chiron in Cancer is modern.

Then astronomers saw Chiron behave like a comet. When Karen Meech and Michael Belton reported a coma around Chiron, from images taken on April 10, 1989, Chiron stood at 2° Cancer (IAU Circular 4770). A coma is the thin cloud of gas and dust around a comet's core. Chiron is a centaur, a small icy body about 200 km across on an orbit that dips inside Saturn's and reaches out near Uranus's. That report came six years after Zane Stein published the first sign-by-sign Chiron readings.

Until Chiron comes back on July 22, 2038

For the 1988 to 1991 group, the waning square falls inside Chiron's crossing of Aries, from 2018 until it moves into Taurus for good on April 14, 2027: the moving Chiron squares each natal degree in Cancer from the same degree of Aries. For natal Cancer that square comes at a median age of 32.0 (29.2 to 35.7). From April 14, 2027 until it moves into Gemini on July 19, 2033, Chiron in Taurus sextiles Cancer by whole sign, and from 2033 to 2038 it crosses Gemini, the sign just before Cancer.

Chiron moves into Cancer on July 22, 2038 (US Eastern date), and babies born from that day will be the next Cancer-Chiron generation. People born with Chiron in Cancer from 1988 to 1991 met their Chiron opposition from 2001 to 2005 and meet their return from 2038 to 2041. The return arrives at a median age of 50.1 (49.4 to 50.9), and for natal Cancer half of all returns come in one exact pass and half in three.

The transit note below is about the moving sky, shared by everyone.

Transit note, October 2026

Chiron entered Taurus on June 19, 2026, moved back into Aries by retrograde motion on September 17, 2026, and re-enters Taurus for good on April 14, 2027 (US Eastern dates). It has been retrograde since August 3, 2026, at 0°52′ Taurus, and turns direct on January 6, 2027, at 26°15′ Aries. Its next stay in Cancer begins on July 22, 2038. By whole sign, the sky's Chiron in Aries squares natal Chiron in Cancer, and when it hits a given chart exactly depends on the natal degree.

Two people, two birth dates

Family and partners are where a Cancer Chiron gets talked about most. You can compare two people's Sun, Mercury, Venus and Mars signs from their birth dates alone, with no birth time or account needed. Chiron isn't part of that comparison.

FAQ

Is Chiron in Cancer the same as a mother wound?

No. "Mother wound" is a pop-psychology phrase that online readings attach to this placement, while the early Chiron books framed Cancer around security, family, love and the past. Zane Stein wrote about family as something these people protect, Martin Lass about a feeling that love is missing, and Barbara Hand Clow about being tied to the past. The nearest the myth comes is Hyginus's story of Chiron's mother turning into a linden tree. Whatever happened with your own mother, your Chiron sign can't tell you, because it's shared by millions of people born around the same time as you.

Can I have a happy family of my own with Chiron in Cancer?

Yes. Nothing in the placement rules out a happy family, and nothing in it guarantees one; it went to children born across a three-year window, whatever their families were like. If anything, the early readings point toward caring a great deal about getting family right: Stein's Cancer entry calls family "paramount" and talks about protecting it at all costs. What shapes a family is the people in it and the choices they make, not a sign shared by more than 12 million U.S. births.

Does Chiron in Cancer say anything about my stomach or my health?

No. Some online lists tie each Chiron sign to a body part and give Cancer the stomach and the chest, but treat those lists as folklore. None of the Cancer readings quoted on this page makes a medical claim, and no birth placement can diagnose anything. The sign is shared by millions of people born in the same few years, healthy or not. If you have symptoms, talk to a doctor.

When was Chiron last in Cancer, and when does it move back in?

Chiron was last in Cancer from June 21, 1988 to July 20, 1991, in one unbroken stretch (on June 21, 1988 and July 21, 1991 the birth time decides), and before that in three stretches between August 27, 1937 and June 15, 1941. It moves back into Cancer on July 22, 2038 (US Eastern dates throughout), re-enters Gemini on January 8, 2039, returns to Cancer on April 26, 2039 and moves into Leo on August 28, 2041. A last visit to Cancer runs from February 9, 2042 until Chiron leaves for Leo on May 16, 2042. Babies born in those stretches will have Chiron in Cancer, and the 1988 to 1991 generation meets its first exact Chiron return between 2038 and 2041.
