Chiron in Capricorn: Why No Achievement Feels Like Enough, and Why It Bites Around 19 and 37

The Capricorn symbol above the Chiron symbol, beside a ring with a terracotta Capricorn arc.

Zane Stein, whose 1983 readings are the oldest we found, tied Chiron in Capricorn to a need to succeed and a drive to build something that lasts. Martin Lass reads it as the pain of going unnoticed. On either reading you can reach the goal and still feel it isn't enough. Neither predicts failure.

The timing explains why it can feel sharper at certain ages. Astrologers who use Chiron watch the years when the sky's Chiron squares or opposes its birth position, and for this placement those come late: the first square at a median age of 19.4, the opposition at 36.6, later than for any other Chiron sign. People born with Chiron in Capricorn from December 2001 to December 2005, aged 20 to 24 in October 2026, met their first Chiron square between 2018 and 2026. The older group, born 1951 to 1955, met their opposition between 1988 and 1991.

Quick answer

Chiron in Capricorn is the Chiron sign of people born February 8, 1951 to January 26, 1955 or December 11, 2001 to December 4, 2005, with one gap in each. Astrologers tie it to achievement that never feels like enough and to a fear of failing. It doesn't predict failure, illness or a hard father.

Why it bites at about 19, and again at about 37

The years the sky's Chiron reaches a square to its birth position (90 degrees on), the opposition (180) and the return (back to the start) are read as the times a natal Chiron theme comes up for review. Chiron's orbit is lopsided, slow through Pisces, Aries and Taurus and fast through Virgo and Libra, so those ages differ by sign. On JPL Horizons positions, for every birth date from 1900 to 2026 with Chiron in Capricorn:

Point in the cycleMedian ageRange
First (waxing) square19.416.4 to 22.1
Opposition36.635.7 to 37.4
Waning square43.141.8 to 44.6
Return50.149.3 to 50.9

Natal Chiron in Capricorn meets its opposition latest of all twelve signs: at a median age of 36.6, and always between 35.7 and 37.4, for birth dates from 1900 to 2026. Between the square and the opposition, the sky's Chiron has to cross Aries and Taurus, two of the signs where it lingers longest, and then Gemini, which is why the gap is so long. After the opposition it speeds up, and the return follows about 13 and a half years later.

These are ages at the first exact hit of each aspect, not ages at which anyone measured a feeling, and your natal degree narrows them. Astrologers use the dates to revisit the questions this placement raises about achievement. The calculation tells you when an aspect is exact. It can't tell you how work or success will feel that year.

The square and the opposition take years to pass. A free account lists today's transit aspects to your natal planets and to Chiron, so you can follow the short ones too.

Born 2001 to 2005: the square from Aries, then a trine from Taurus

People born with Chiron in Capricorn from December 2001 to December 2005 met their first Chiron square between 2018 and 2026. It came from Aries: Chiron's Aries stay, from April 17, 2018 to the final move into Taurus on April 14, 2027, squares Capricorn by whole sign. A square that comes in three exact passes stretches over about a year.

By the same whole-sign logic, here is what follows for this group:

  • Taurus, from April 14, 2027 until the move into Gemini on July 19, 2033, then again from October 23, 2033 to the final move into Gemini on May 5, 2034: a trine, the easy angle between two earth signs.
  • Gemini, from July 19, 2033 (for good from May 5, 2034) until the move into Cancer on July 22, 2038: 150 degrees, no major angle.
  • Cancer, from July 22, 2038: the opposition. The 2001 to 2005 group meets its first exact opposition between 2038 and 2041, and its return between 2052 and 2055.

The opposition sets Capricorn's focus on public achievement against Cancer's focus on home, rest and belonging. Chiron in Cancer, the home-and-family end of this axis, covers that side.

For the older group the cycle is complete. Born 1951 to 1955, they met the first square between 1968 and 1976, the opposition between 1988 and 1991, and the return between 2001 and 2005.

For the sky's position on the date shown, see the note below.

Transit note, October 2026

Chiron entered Taurus on June 19, 2026, moved back into Aries by retrograde motion on September 17, 2026, and re-enters Taurus for good on April 14, 2027 (US Eastern dates). It has been retrograde since August 3, 2026, at 0°52′ Taurus, and turns direct on January 6, 2027, at 26°15′ Aries. Its next stay in Capricorn begins on January 16, 2052. By whole sign, the sky's Chiron in Aries squares natal Chiron in Capricorn, and when it hits a given chart exactly depends on the natal degree.

Builder or overlooked? What the Chiron books say about Capricorn

Chiron was only found in 1977, so every reading of it in a sign is modern. Charles Kowal caught it on Palomar plates in October 1977 and recognized it on November 1, and an IAU circular announced it three days later. The oldest sign-by-sign readings, Zane Stein's, followed in 1983.

Stein's Capricorn entry is about building: "These people need to create some type of order or structure that will not fall apart when other things do, and which, it is hoped, will function after they are gone." Then comes the line closest to the never-enough feeling: "They have a strong need to succeed at their unique path, and can't stand failure" (Interpreting Chiron, 1983, p. B11). He split the placement in two. The more evolved types, he wrote, believe each person's path is their own; the others find a path and expect everyone to follow it. He also tied every Chiron sign to childhood: the sign shows "what the current preoccupation of the parents is" at the birth, and that worry becomes the child's own (p. B1). For Capricorn that would be a home where order, work and getting it right came first.

Martin Lass reads the same placement as being overlooked: "The Wound of feeling unrecognized, unappreciated, unnoticed, unacknowledged, unheard and 'passed over'" (Musings of a Rogue Comet, 2nd ed., 2002, ch. 5). Barbara Hand Clow is the most hopeful of the three: "Patience is the keyword for those with Chiron in Capricorn, for they never stop believing they will get what they want" (Chiron, 2nd ed., Llewellyn 1993, ch. 7). Richard Nolle, as quoted by Clow, says they "desire to conquer time."

Stein stresses building something that lasts; Lass stresses going unrecognized. In a reading, the fear of failing can show as overwork, or as not trying at all so that nothing can be judged. At work it shows in titles and in the sense that the next promotion will finally count. In relationships it can look like earning your place by being the indispensable partner instead of relaxing into being loved.

The house and the aspects decide where it lands. In the 10th house it's read through career and public standing, in the 4th through home and family. A close aspect from Chiron to the Sun ties it to identity and confidence; one to the Moon ties it to feeling safe, and that one needs a birth time to confirm.

Is Chiron in Capricorn a hard placement, then? It has a heavy reputation, and one Reddit reader asked outright whether it meant their career was doomed for good. It doesn't. No placement blocks success. What helps, on these readings, is choosing your own measure before the result comes in, the way Stein's evolved types decide the path is theirs. A concrete version: before you start a project, write down what done looks like in your own terms, and judge the result against that rather than against someone else's feed. Clow's patience fits the same habit, and Stein's split suggests the same for mentoring: help someone find their own path instead of copying yours. If the feeling turns into burnout or depression, talk to a doctor or a therapist.

Who has Chiron in Capricorn, to the day

Chiron's sign comes from the birth date alone, except on a day it changes sign. The US Eastern dates, on JPL Horizons positions:

  • February 8 to June 17, 1951, then November 8, 1951 to January 26, 1955. From June 18 to November 7, 1951, Chiron was back in Sagittarius.
  • December 11, 2001 to February 20, 2005, then July 31 to December 4, 2005. From February 21 to July 30, 2005, Chiron had moved ahead into Aquarius.

Born on a change day (February 8, June 18 or November 8, 1951; January 27, 1955; December 11, 2001; February 21, July 31 or December 5, 2005)? Then the birth time decides, and the birth-date lookup that flags change days marks those dates for you.

That puts the two groups at 71 to 75 and 20 to 24 in October 2026. In our count, 8.9% of U.S. births from 1940 to 2024 have Chiron in Capricorn (28.62 million births): 14.15 million in the 1951 to 1955 window and 14.47 million in the 2001 to 2005 one. The count spreads NCHS yearly birth totals (1940 to 2018; 2019 to 2024 from NCHS's Births: Final Data reports and 2024 natality file) evenly over the days of each year, so it counts births, not the people alive in 2026.

Names from both groups, with Chiron computed for noon UT on the birth date: Oprah Winfrey (January 29, 1954) at 23°35′ Capricorn, Jenna Ortega (September 27, 2002) at 3°30′ and Olivia Rodrigo (February 20, 2003) at 15°27′. Kevin Costner and Eddie Van Halen were born in January 1955, days before Chiron entered Aquarius, and both charts put it at 29° Capricorn, at the very end of the sign. A list that files every 1955 birth under Aquarius gets both of them wrong. Five famous charts prove nothing about 28.62 million U.S. births.

Uranus for the 1950s group, Saturn for the 2000s group

In 1983 Stein wrote of "increasing evidence" that it also matters "where Chiron is in relation to Saturn and Uranus" (p. B10). Each Capricorn group was born with one of the two across the sky from Chiron.

Chiron in Capricorn stood exactly opposite Uranus seven times from February 1952 to December 1954 (Chiron from JPL Horizons, Uranus from the Swiss Ephemeris). In our count, 27.8% of U.S. births from 1940 to 2024 with Chiron in Capricorn came within 5 degrees of a Chiron opposite Uranus.

The younger group got Saturn instead. Chiron stood exactly opposite Saturn on September 25 and October 24, 2003, and on August 15 and December 28, 2004, each time from Capricorn, and 12.1% of U.S. births from 1940 to 2024 with Chiron in Capricorn came within 5 degrees of a Chiron opposite Saturn. Saturn is Capricorn's traditional ruler, the planet of rules, work and time, so a reading of this contact leans on the same themes twice. Both contacts are generation markers; the degrees in one chart show how close they are there.

Retrograde Chiron in Capricorn, at birth and in the sky

Retrograde Chiron in Capricorn can mean two things. The first is about your birth. Chiron looks as if it's moving backward for four to five months of every year, while Earth overtakes it on the inside track. On JPL Horizons positions it was retrograde on 39.0% of the days it spent in Capricorn from 1900 to 2060, and in our count 38.8% of U.S. births from 1940 to 2024 with Chiron in Capricorn came while it was retrograde. A chart marks it with ℞, and the free chart linked near the top of this page shows that mark on the Chiron row.

If you take a retrograde planet as turned inward, a retrograde Capricorn Chiron is a more private version of the feeling, judged by your own standards more than a boss's. Nothing in the astronomy makes it weaker, and at 38.8% of these births it's an ordinary feature, not a rare mark.

The second question is about the sky. Chiron turns retrograde once a year. In every loop centered in Capricorn from 1876 to 2100 on JPL positions, the backward phase lasts 142 to 149 days and covers about 5.7 degrees, and across those years Chiron still gains about 7.9 degrees a year. Chiron's next stay in Capricorn starts on January 16, 2052, so until then retrograde Chiron in Capricorn is a birth-chart question.

FAQ

Can you be successful or famous with Chiron in Capricorn?

Yes. Nothing in a birth chart blocks success, and very successful people have this placement: Oprah Winfrey, born January 29, 1954, has Chiron at 23°35′ Capricorn. What the readings describe is how success feels from the inside. Zane Stein wrote in 1983 that these people 'can't stand failure', and Martin Lass reads a feeling of being 'passed over'. The usual complaint is different from failing: success arrives and doesn't register.

Does Chiron in Capricorn point to a difficult father?

Not on its own. None of the Capricorn readings quoted on this page mentions a father. The link comes from Capricorn's ties to Saturn, authority and the 10th house, which some modern astrologers read as a parent, so a reading may connect the never-enough feeling to a demanding parent or boss. Whether that fits depends on your own history. A sign shared by most people born across about four years can't describe one family.

Does Chiron in Capricorn mean bone or joint problems?

No. Lists online pair Chiron in Capricorn with knees, bones and joints because older astrology linked Capricorn with the knees and its ruler Saturn with the bones, but none of the Chiron authors quoted here makes a health claim, and Chiron names no illness. A birth chart can't diagnose anything. If you have joint pain, see a doctor.

What happens during Chiron retrograde in Capricorn?

It depends whether you mean your birth chart or the sky. If Chiron was retrograde when you were born, your chart marks it with ℞: on JPL Horizons positions that was true on 39.0% of the days Chiron spent in Capricorn from 1900 to 2060, and in our count for 38.8% of U.S. births from 1940 to 2024 with this placement. Some modern astrologers read a retrograde planet as turned inward, which would make the never-enough feeling a more private one, but nothing in the astronomy makes it weaker. In the sky, each retrograde loop centered in Capricorn lasts 142 to 149 days, and Chiron's next stay in the sign starts on January 16, 2052.
