Neptune in Leo: The Glamour Machine, and How Hollywood's Star System Was Born With This Cohort

Marilyn Monroe, Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland and Audrey Hepburn were all born with Neptune in Leo, and so was the machine that made them famous. Neptune crossed into Leo on September 23, 1914, settled there for good on May 2, 1916, and left on July 24, 1929, and in that window the Hollywood star system, the talkie, the Hollywoodland sign and the Academy Awards all arrived. It is the neatest planet-to-era fit in the whole Neptune cycle, which is exactly why it gets over-claimed.

One thing before the timeline starts: the youngest person with this placement turned 97 this year. Neptune in Leo is a historical cohort, not a reading you are likely to own. Odds are you searched a sign you don't have. Neptune glamorises whatever sign it sits in. In Leo, the sign of the performer, the sovereign and the spotlight, the thing it glamorised was fame itself.

The star system, year by year: a Neptune in Leo timeline

The cleanest way to see what this Neptune did is to lay the ingress dates and the era's landmarks on the same line. Births in bold; ingresses marked ♆.

Event dates are from the Wikipedia entries for Prohibition, the Hollywood Sign, The Jazz Singer and the 1st Academy Awards; birth dates from each person's Wikipedia page; ingresses from our own ephemeris run, cross-checked against two independent tables (see the hub). The Oscars row is the one worth pausing on. The ceremony that formalised movie stardom as an institution landed inside a five-month retrograde retreat, at 28° Leo, ten weeks before Neptune left the sign for the rest of the century. If you wanted a closing scene for the Glamour Machine, the sky wrote one.

Four stints, to the day

Neptune retrogrades for about five months every year and its loop straddles the cusp at nearly every ingress, so no Neptune stay is a single clean block. Here is Leo's, in civil UT dates, each row running to the day before the next:

The ranking pages give "1914–1929", "1915–1929" or "1916–1928". Every one of those is just this table with the short stints deleted. The 1928–29 Virgo dip is the piece that matters most for real people: anyone born between September 21, 1928 and February 18, 1929 has Neptune at 0° Virgo, not 29° Leo, and belongs to the Virgo cohort, the oldest still alive in any numbers. Martin Luther King Jr., born January 15, 1929, is the famous case: Virgo, 0°54′, though the year-only lists frequently hand him to Leo.

Two smaller notes. The 1914–16 Cancer shuffle gives three boundary windows in eighteen months, so a 1915 birth has to be computed, not looked up; that shuffle is told from the other side on the Neptune in Cancer page. And the retrograde stints mean about 43 percent of this cohort were born with Neptune retrograde, which is the same share as every other Neptune cohort; it is not a Leo quirk.

The Wall Street Crash was a Neptune in Virgo event

This is the correction the page exists to make. The Roaring Twenties and Neptune's Leo stay overlap so neatly that several astrology sites roll the crash into the same paragraph: the glamour bubble inflates under Leo, the glamour bubble bursts under Leo. The second half is wrong. Neptune made its final entry into Virgo on July 24, 1929. The crash days were October 24 and October 29, 1929 (Wikipedia), three months after the sign changed. Neptune was in the first degrees of Virgo, the sign of accounting, rationing and repair.

But that distinction isn't pedantry. It's the whole method of reading outer-planet eras. Leo's Neptune built the illusion; Virgo's Neptune audited it, and the Depression, the New Deal and the penicillin decade belong to Virgo's ledger. Get the date wrong and every generational reading downstream of it is off by a sign. The same discipline applies to your own chart: a Neptune placement is only as good as the ephemeris behind it, which is why a computed chart beats a year table every time.

Who has Neptune in Leo? Verified natives, with degrees

The celebrity lists for this sign are long, unchecked and full of boundary errors. Every name below was date-checked on Wikipedia and placed inside one of the four stints; where a published chart exists we cross-checked the degree (Monroe's at astro-charts.com; Sinatra and Hepburn likewise).

Look at what the cohort did with the era's dream. Monroe became the most glamorised face of the twentieth century. Sinatra turned the crooner into a sovereign. Garland was the star system's child and its casualty. Hepburn and Elizabeth II each became a global image more than a person, and Kennedy and Mandela each became an image that outlived the man. None of that is evidence that a planet did it. It is the pattern the placement predicts, laid next to the people who had it, and you can weigh it yourself.

The misfiles next, because the top lists for "Neptune in Leo celebrities" include them. Billie Holiday is not Neptune in Leo. Born April 7, 1915, she falls inside the first Cancer retreat, and her Neptune sits in the last degrees of Cancer. Grace Kelly is not Neptune in Leo either. Born November 12, 1929, 111 days after the final Virgo ingress, she is a Virgo native who gets pulled onto Leo lists by the "1929" in her birth year. And the list pages run the trap the other way too, filing Sinatra under Cancer: he was born inside the second Leo stint, ninety-eight days from the nearest boundary, and is Leo at 2°19′. The list sites also add Shirley Temple, Doris Day, Mel Brooks, Stan Lee and Dick Van Dyke; their years fit, but we did not check their dates against the stints, so they stay off our table.

What Neptune in Leo means: glamour as a spiritual technology

Strip away the listicle adjectives and the placement is a single proposition. Neptune dissolves the boundary between the individual and the collective dream; Leo, the fixed sign of the fire triplicity, is the sign of the self performed in public. Put them together and the self becomes the thing the collective dreams through. That is what a movie star is. It is also what a monarch is, and what a martyr is, and the cohort supplied all three.

For the individual native the signature was an appetite for romance, spectacle and being seen, paired with a difficulty telling the performed self from the private one. The era's pathologies are the placement's shadow: celebrity as a substitute religion, the glamorised addiction (Prohibition ran for all but the first five years of the stay), the fan who mourns a stranger as family. The classic "Neptune in Leo woman" search is the same person as the "Neptune in Leo man"; the placement does not come in gendered editions, and the pages that say otherwise are recycling one paragraph.

On dignity: Neptune has none in the traditional scheme. Its rulership of Pisces is a modern assignment, with Jupiter the traditional ruler, and Leo belongs to the Sun. Nothing classical makes Leo a strong or weak seat for Neptune, so the "is it good?" question has no dignity answer, only a chart answer. One more transfer worth making for the people who do not have this Neptune but wanted the flavour: Leo's performance instinct in a chart is usually a Sun, a Venus or a rising sign, not a Neptune. Venus in Leo is the placement that actually wants the spotlight in love; Leo rising is the one that walks in like a star. Both are common and both are probably in somebody you know.

Before you go: the sign you were actually born under

Neptune takes 164.8 years to orbit the Sun and spends thirteen to fourteen years in each sign (orbital data on Wikipedia's Neptune entry), so a Neptune sign is a birth-cohort label. Leo's cohort closed 97 years ago, and nobody alive who is younger than 97 carries it. If a site gave you Neptune in Leo from a later birth date, one of three things happened: it used a sidereal zodiac, which shifts most Neptune-in-Virgo births back into "Leo"; it confused the sign with the 5th house, the Leo house of the chart, where Neptune can sit in any birth year; or it simply read from a wrong table.

When Neptune returns to Leo

Around 2078, and we will not print a day for it. Our verified ingress table runs to Neptune's final entry into Gemini on May 12, 2052; add a Gemini stay and a Cancer stay of roughly thirteen to fourteen years each and Leo arrives in the late 2070s, with the usual retreat into Cancer the following winter. One competitor page states 2078 flatly, which is the right neighbourhood, but it is cycle arithmetic, not an ingress date, and we label it that way. The full 1861–2052 table is in the hub.

For orientation, this page's latest build has Neptune in Aries, where it has been since January 26, 2026, with the final hand-off to Taurus on March 23, 2039 for good. It is retrograde at the moment, having stationed at 4°25′ Aries on July 7, 2026, with the next station on December 12, 2026.
