Neptune in Cancer: The Greatest Generation's Homeland Dream, Dated to the Day

Neptune entered Cancer on July 19, 1901 and left it for the last time on May 2, 1916. Every person born with Neptune in Cancer belongs to the Greatest Generation, and the youngest of them turned 110 this year. So this page won't tell you what Neptune in Cancer says about your love life, because the odds you carry the placement are close to zero. If you are reading this, you almost certainly searched a sign you do not have.

What the page does instead: give the era its exact dates, including the three retreats that split it into four stints; name the famous natives whose birth dates we checked against those stints, with chart degrees where we have them; and call out the boundary traps that put Frank Sinatra on Cancer lists where he does not belong. One idea runs through it. Neptune dissolves and idealises whatever sign it occupies, and Cancer is the sign of home, mother, memory and nation. Between 1901 and 1916 the world dreamed about homeland, and then sent that dream's children to war.

First: you almost certainly don't have this

Neptune takes 164.8 years to orbit the Sun (per Wikipedia's orbital data) and spends thirteen to fourteen years in each sign, so a Neptune sign is a birth-cohort label more than a personal one. Cancer's cohort closed on May 1, 1916, 110 years ago. The people who carry it were children during the First World War, young adults in the Depression, and the soldiers, nurses and factory hands of the Second. History calls them the Greatest Generation; astrologically they are the Neptune-in-Cancer generation, and the two labels line up better than most generation-to-planet pairings do.

If a website told you that you have Neptune in Cancer and you were born after 1916, one of three things happened. The site used a sidereal zodiac, which shifts every placement back about 24 degrees and turns many Neptune-in-Leo births into "Cancer". Or it confused the sign with the house: Neptune in the 4th house, the Cancer house of the chart, is common and describes much of what the sign copy promises (see how the twelve houses are assigned). The dates, to the day: four stints and three retreats

Neptune retrogrades for about five months every year, and its retrograde loop straddles the sign boundary at nearly every ingress. Cancer's stay is the textbook case: one retreat back into Gemini at the start, and two retreats from Leo back into Cancer at the end. Civil UT dates, each row running to the day before the next:

Two things follow. First, the 1914–1916 Leo/Cancer shuffle means a birth in late 1914, 1915 or early 1916 cannot be filed by year: September 23 to December 13, 1914 is Leo; December 14, 1914 to July 18, 1915 is Cancer; July 19, 1915 to March 18, 1916 is Leo; March 19 to May 1, 1916 is Cancer again. Second, the competitor year ranges ("1901–1915", "1902–1914", "1901–1916") are all the same table with the short stints dropped, which is why they disagree with each other by a year at each end. A widely copied generations PDF even prints the December 1901 retreat a month early; the daily ephemeris shows Neptune still at 0°40′ Cancer on December 1, 1901, so the retreat is December 25.

The degree matters for the natives. Neptune enters a sign at 0° and leaves it at 29°, so a 1901 birth carries Neptune at 0° Cancer and a 1914 birth carries it near 28–29°. The homeland dream, 1901–1916: what the era actually looked like

Read Neptune in Cancer as a question the world was asking: what is home, and what would you give up for it? The answers arrived fast. On December 27, 1904, J. M. Barrie's Peter Pan, or the Boy Who Wouldn't Grow Up opened in London (Wikipedia), a play whose entire plot is children leaving the nursery for a dream island and then aching to get back to their mother. It is hard to write a more Neptune-in-Cancer sentence than that.

Home as a place you leave: 1907 was Ellis Island's peak year, and April 17, 1907 its busiest single day (New-York Historical Society). Home as something you train children to defend: Baden-Powell's experimental camp on Brownsea Island ran in August 1907, Scouting for Boys appeared in January 1908, and the Boy Scouts of America incorporated on February 8, 1910. Home as the mother, sanctified: the first Mother's Day was observed on May 10, 1908, and Woodrow Wilson proclaimed it a national holiday on May 9, 1914 (Wikipedia), four months before Neptune first crossed into Leo. Even the dream factory itself was founded in this window: Nestor opened the first Hollywood studio on October 27, 1911, though the star system it produced belongs to the Leo era that followed.

And the dissolution that Neptune always brings. On April 15, 1912 the Titanic, the floating home that was sold as unsinkable, went down in the North Atlantic (Wikipedia). On June 28, 1914 Franz Ferdinand was shot in Sarajevo, three months before Neptune's first Leo ingress. The children born under Cancer's Neptune would spend their twenties and thirties answering the question the era had posed, and the answer was a homeland worth dying for.

Astrologer Patrick Watson adds a sharper material reading of the same period: synthetic vitamins, commercial baby food and early plastics, what we would call artificial nurture, all arrive under this Neptune (his Neptune in Cancer essay). Whichever lens you prefer, the pattern is the one Neptune leaves everywhere: the sign's domain gets idealised, mass-produced, and then mourned.

Who has Neptune in Cancer? The verified natives, with degrees

The list sites that rank for this query are long and unchecked. Ours is short and checked: every birth date below was confirmed on the person's Wikipedia entry and placed inside one of the four stints, and degrees were cross-checked against the published chart where one exists (Disney's at astro-charts.com).

Notice how the cohort rhymes with the era. Disney built an entire industry out of childhood nostalgia and a theme park called Main Street, U.S.A.; Reagan's politics ran on an idealised American past; Rosa Parks forced the nation to decide who counted as family; Kahlo painted her own body and her own house, the Casa Azul, over and over. Billie Holiday recorded Strange Fruit, a song about the homeland's worst secret. None of this is proof. It is the sort of pattern Neptune in Cancer predicts, which is different from evidence that it caused it.

Now the traps. Frank Sinatra (December 12, 1915) is not Neptune in Cancer. He was born during the second Leo stint, with Neptune at 2°19′ Leo, and belongs on the Leo page. Billie Holiday, born eight months earlier, is the mirror case: she lands inside the third Cancer stint and gets mis-filed as Leo. Armstrong and Disney, both 1901, are routinely listed under Gemini by year-only tables; both are Cancer, though Armstrong's sixteen-day margin is close enough that a computed chart, not a table, should be the authority. The list sites also add John Wayne, Bette Davis and Lucille Ball; their years fit, but we did not check their dates against the stints, so we leave them off.

About 43 percent of all days in the era had Neptune retrograde, so roughly four in ten of these natives carry a retrograde Neptune. The conventional reading is that a retrograde Neptune internalises the dream; Disney, born twenty days before the crossing with Neptune already sliding backward toward Gemini, is the clearest example of a retreat-season birth.

What the placement meant for the people who had it

Neptune idealises, dissolves and spiritualises the sign it sits in. In Cancer, the cardinal water sign that opens the water triplicity, the objects of that idealisation are home, mother, family, country and the past. The native is not necessarily sentimental in person; many of the people above were famously difficult. The generational signature is a willingness to sacrifice for kin and homeland, a tendency to remember the past as better than it was, and a gift for building sanctuaries, whether a theme park, a studio system or a national myth.

On dignity, be careful with what you read. Neptune has no place in the traditional dignity scheme at all; its domicile in Pisces is a modern assignment (Jupiter is the traditional ruler, as our Pisces rising guide explains), and nothing classical makes Cancer a throne or a prison for it. Modern writers who call Cancer a comfortable seat are reasoning from element: water planet, water sign, the Moon as Cancer's ruler cooperating with Neptune's tides. That is a sympathy, not a dignity, and it tells you nothing an individual chart cannot override. The cohort's Neptune cycle is also finished history. Transiting Neptune squared their natal Neptune around age 40 to 42, in the 1940s and 1950s, as Neptune moved through Libra; it trined it around age 55 from Scorpio; and the opposition, at roughly 81 to 84, fell while Neptune ran through Capricorn between 1984 and 1998, the sign directly opposite Cancer. The few still living have outlasted every Neptune transit a chart can offer.

Neptune in Cancer versus Neptune in the 4th house

But most traffic to a page like this is really looking for the house. Neptune in the 4th house, which the Cancer analogy governs, can appear in any birth year, and it describes the personal version of everything above: a home that is idealised or hard to pin down, a parent who was absent, saintly or both, a pull toward living near water, a family story with a fog in it. Sign and house are not interchangeable, and neither is a Cancer Sun. A Cancer Sun's year ahead is read from transits to the Sun, and a Cancer's relationship with Neptune this decade is a transit story, not a natal one. The clean distinction: sign is shared with everyone born in the same fourteen years; house is yours; aspects decide whether you notice either.

When will Neptune be in Cancer again?

Roughly the mid-2060s, and we mean roughly. Our verified ingress table ends with Neptune's final entry into Gemini on May 12, 2052. Add a Gemini stay of thirteen to fourteen years and the Cancer ingress lands somewhere around 2065 or 2066, with the usual retreat into Gemini that winter. We will not print a day for it until we have computed and cross-checked one, because a date copied from a year-only table is how the 1901–1915 confusion above began. For orientation, this page's latest build has Neptune in Aries, where it has been since January 26, 2026, with the final hand-off to Taurus on March 23, 2039 for good. Neptune is retrograde at the moment, having stationed at 4°25′ Aries on July 7, 2026; the next station is December 12, 2026. Cancer is three signs further on.
