Neptune in Virgo: Service as Spirituality in the Oldest Living Neptune Generation

This page is written for two people. The first is checking a chart that belongs to a grandmother, a great-uncle, a neighbour in their nineties: someone born between the autumn of 1928 and the summer of 1943, the years Neptune spent in Virgo. The second typed "Neptune in Virgo" into a search bar and landed here by mistake, because a calculator somewhere said so or because Virgo is their Sun sign. If you were born after August 1943, this isn't your Neptune. The first section below gets you to the right one in about a minute.

For the first reader, the page gives the era its exact dates, including the two retrograde wobbles that split it into three stints, and it names the boundary births that other pages file under the wrong sign. First, is this even your Neptune? The one-minute check

Neptune moves slowly enough that your birth year almost always settles the sign. If you were born between 1944 and the late 1950s your Neptune is in Libra; 1957 to 1970, Scorpio; the 1970s to 1984, Sagittarius; roughly 1984 to 1998, Capricorn; 1998 to 2011, Aquarius; 2012 to early 2025, Pisces. Only the people born from September 1928 to August 1943 have Neptune in Virgo, and the year before that belongs to Neptune in Leo.

The month Neptune entered Virgo, a mould grew in a dish

On September 3, 1928, Alexander Fleming came back from holiday to find a contaminated culture plate in his London laboratory: a mould had killed the bacteria around it (Wikipedia: Alexander Fleming). Eighteen days later, on September 21, Neptune crossed from Leo into Virgo. Penicillin was noticed before the ingress, not under it, so we won't pretend the planet did the work. But as an image of what the next fourteen years would be about, it is hard to improve on: something formless and half-accidental (Neptune) turned, by patient lab work, into medicine (Virgo).

The stay itself was not one clean block. Neptune's annual retrograde loop straddles the sign boundary at almost every ingress, and Virgo got the standard enter, retreat, re-enter treatment at both ends. Here is the era exactly, in civil UT dates; each row runs to the day before the next:

Most guides print "1928–1943" or "1929–1942" and stop, which is why they mis-file the boundary births. The whole table of every Neptune ingress since 1861, with each retreat marked, lives on the hub page; the bit that matters here is the one-month-each-way fuzz in 1928–29 and 1942–43. Those four seasons are the only times a Virgo-or-not question cannot be answered from the year alone.

What this Neptune dreamed: service as spirituality

Every Neptune sign is a collective ideal, the thing a generation is born believing in before it can argue. Leo's cohort was born into the star system; Libra's would be born into the marriage boom. The Virgo cohort was born into the Depression and the war, and the ideal it absorbed was that goodness is something you do, in small, exact, unglamorous acts, for other people. Faith as service. The mystic who washes the dishes.

And the era's institutions say it more plainly than any keyword list. On June 10, 1935, Alcoholics Anonymous was founded (Wikipedia: Alcoholics Anonymous): a fellowship that treats Neptune's oldest shadow, addiction, with Virgo's oldest tools, a daily routine, a written inventory, one alcoholic being of use to another. It is the cleanest single anchor for this placement that exists. Nine weeks later, on August 14, 1935, the Social Security Act was signed (Wikipedia: Social Security Act), turning the vague ideal of looking after the old and the out-of-work into payroll arithmetic. The year before, from July 1, 1934, the Hays Code began to be enforced in Hollywood, a moral filter applied to Leo-era glamour by a committee with a checklist. Walt Disney's Snow White premiered December 21, 1937: a fairy tale whose heroine keeps house for seven working men. Britain began food rationing on January 8, 1940. And on March 14, 1942, penicillin was given to its first patient in the United States (Wikipedia: Penicillin), closing the loop that opened in Fleming's dish the month the era began.

Notice what all of these share. None is a vision; each is a procedure. Twelve steps, a payroll deduction, a production code, a ration book, a dosing schedule. Neptune in Virgo does not stop dreaming. It insists the dream come with instructions.

"Detriment": what the label really means here

You will read that Neptune is "in detriment" in Virgo, and the phrase deserves a footnote before it deserves a reading. Neptune was only discovered on September 23, 1846 (STScI news release, 2011), so its rulership of Pisces is a modern assignment; the traditional ruler of Pisces is Jupiter, as our Pisces rising guide explains. "Detriment" is the sign opposite a planet's home, so Neptune's detriment in Virgo is a modern attribution resting on another modern attribution. It is not a verdict from the old dignity tables, the way Jupiter's detriment in the same sign is (see Jupiter in Virgo for that older argument).

Read functionally rather than as a grade, "opposite its home" says something useful: the planet has to work in the style of its opposite. Pisces dissolves boundaries; Virgo, an earth sign, draws them with a ruler. So the fog gets filtered. Neptune in Virgo is discernment applied to the numinous, the generation that asked of every ideal "yes, but does it work, and for whom?" That is not a weak Neptune. It is the Neptune that turned a mould into an antibiotic and a prayer into a twelve-step meeting.

The real cost shows up elsewhere: as worry wearing the mask of duty, as a health anxiety that never quite resolves, as the perfectionism that keeps postponing the dream until the conditions are right. Virgo's failure mode is to let the checklist replace the thing it was written for, and Neptune makes the checklist infinite. The practical reading for anyone with this placement, or caring for someone who has it, is that rest is not a lapse in service.

The oldest living Neptune generation

For almost everyone alive today, Neptune runs only from Virgo to Aries. The Cancer, Gemini, and Taurus cohorts have gone, a few Leo natives aged 97 and up survive, and the Aries cohort is made of babies born since 2025. That makes the Virgo cohort the oldest Neptune generation still alive in any numbers. As of 2026, the cohort is roughly 83 to 98 years old, with the small September 1928 to February 1929 vanguard about 98. In the usual vocabulary this is the Silent Generation, though the published generation boundaries do not line up exactly with Neptune's, a mismatch the hub's generations table lays out sign by sign.

Something else follows from the dates. Neptune in Pisces, from February 2012 to March 2025, sat exactly opposite every natal Neptune in Virgo, which is the Neptune-opposite-Neptune transit that arrives around age 81 to 84. For this cohort it has already happened: the 1929 births felt it early in that window, the 1942 births at the end of it, as transiting Neptune reached 29° Pisces. Astrologers read the opposition as the point where a life's ideals are seen from the far side, and it is worth knowing that for a living relative, that passage is behind them, not ahead.

What does the placement look like at that age? In practice it tends to show as an allergy to fuss about spirituality combined with a deep, unspoken practice of it; thrift that outlived the need for it; the instinct to tidy a hospital room; a faith that expresses itself as showing up. Who actually has it, and the two boundary traps

Martin Luther King Jr. was born on January 15, 1929 (Wikipedia: Martin Luther King Jr.), inside the first, short Virgo stint, with Neptune at 0°54′ Virgo and just 35 days before it slipped back into Leo. A Neptune in the first degree of the sign of service, in the chart of a minister whose movement was built on disciplined, procedural non-violence: the degree is a detail, but an elegant one, and if degrees interest you our degree-theory explainer covers how much weight to give them.

The main stay holds the rest of the verified cohort. Elvis Presley (January 8, 1935) has Neptune at 14°27′ Virgo, mid-sign and mid-era. Jane Goodall (April 3, 1934), the 14th Dalai Lama (July 6, 1935), John Lennon (October 9, 1940), Bob Dylan (May 24, 1941), and Stephen Hawking (January 8, 1942) all sit comfortably inside it, hundreds of days from any boundary. Paul McCartney (June 18, 1942) is Virgo too, 107 days before the Libra ingress, which is worth saying out loud because several lists file him under Libra by rounding the year. A scientist who spent decades in a Tanzanian forest taking notes, a monk, a physicist, three musicians who treated the studio as a workshop: "practical mysticism" is the commodity phrase for this placement, and for once the commodity phrase fits.

The two traps. Joe Biden, born November 20, 1942, is often listed as a Virgo Neptune because 1942 reads as a Virgo year. He is not: Neptune had entered Libra on October 3, and he is a Neptune in Libra native, 48 days into that first stint. Mick Jagger is the opposite case and the genuine edge. Born July 26, 1943, he lands inside the spring re-dip with Neptune at 29°49′ Virgo, seven days before it crossed into Libra for good. That passes as Virgo, but at 29 degrees it is as Libra-adjacent as a Virgo Neptune can be, and any birth-time uncertainty of a week would move it. He is the example to keep in mind whenever a calculator gives you a 29° anything: the sign is right, and the placement is still a border post.

Three more for the record, all main-stay and safe: Elizabeth Taylor (February 27, 1932), Sophia Loren (September 20, 1934), Muhammad Ali (January 17, 1942). Ali, like McCartney, is a 1942 birth that year-rounding wrongly pushes into Libra.

Sign is not house: Neptune in Virgo versus Neptune in the 6th

Several widely read guides file "Neptune in Virgo" and "Neptune in the 6th house" under a single heading, and the conflation is worth undoing, because the two mean different things at different scales. The sign is generational: everyone born in the fourteen-year window has it, so it tells you about the era's ideal and very little about one person. The house is personal: it depends on the time and place of birth, it changes every two hours, and a 6th-house Neptune can belong to anyone of any generation. Neptune in the 6th describes an individual whose work, routines, and health carry the fog directly: the person who cannot tell where the job ends, who is drawn to healing work, or who has symptoms no one can pin down. So a 1936 birth with Neptune in Virgo in the 10th house has the generation's service ideal expressed through career and public role; the same birth with Neptune in the 4th expresses it through home and family. Only a full chart shows the difference. The next Neptune in Virgo: roughly 2092, beyond our verified table

Neptune's orbital period is 164.8 years (Wikipedia: Neptune), about 13 to 14 years per sign. Counting forward from the 1928 ingress puts the next arrival in Virgo around 2092. Our computed and cross-checked ingress table runs only to the Gemini ingress of May 12, 2052, so treat 2092 as cycle arithmetic, not a date we have verified; the exact day will depend on where that year's retrograde loop falls relative to the Leo–Virgo cusp, the same shuffle that produced the three stints above.

For orientation, at this page's latest build Neptune is in Aries, where it has been since January 26, 2026; it hands off to Taurus on March 23, 2039 for good. From there it still has Taurus, Gemini, Cancer and Leo to cross before it reaches Virgo again, which is how the 2092 figure falls out. It is retrograde as of this build (since July 7, 2026, stationing direct December 12, 2026), the same annual loop that split the 1928–43 era.
