Neptune in Libra: The Soulmate Ideal of the Marriage-Boom Cohort, Dated

Everyone born between the autumn of 1942 and the summer of 1957 has Neptune in Libra. That is the whole of the early Baby Boom and the tail of the Silent Generation: the people who are, as of 2026, roughly 69 to 84 years old. If that is you, or a parent, this page gives the exact dates, including the three boundary years where a birth year on its own gives the wrong sign. Most guides say the same three things about this placement: idealised partnerships, artistic temperament, a weakness for romance. None of them tells you that Neptune entered Libra four times and left it four times between 1942 and 1957, or that the cohort was born into the steepest marriage boom the US Census has ever measured. Born October 1942 to August 1957? The one-minute check

Libra is your Neptune sign if you were born from October 3, 1942 to April 16, 1943, or from August 2, 1943 to December 23, 1955, or inside either of the two 1956–57 retreats listed in the table below. Any birth from January 1944 to November 1955 is Libra without argument. The fuzz lives at the edges: a spring 1943 birth is Virgo (Neptune had backed up to 29° Virgo), and a 1956 or 1957 birth can go either way depending on the month. If you are checking a chart for a parent, the thing to know is that the sign is the easy part. It tells you the era's ideal, which everyone their age shares. Four stints, three boundary years: the era to the day

Neptune's annual retrograde loop straddles a sign boundary at almost every ingress, so every stay opens and closes with an enter, retreat, re-enter shuffle. Libra got a one-retreat opening and a two-retreat closing, which makes 1955–57 one of the messier hand-offs in the whole cycle. Civil UT dates; each row runs to the day before the next:

Three birth years are therefore split: 1943 (Libra, then Virgo, then Libra), 1956 (Scorpio, Libra, Scorpio) and 1957 (Scorpio, Libra, Scorpio). Every other year in the range is unambiguous. What this Neptune dreamed: the other person

Neptune, in Richard Tarnas's summary, "is associated with the impulse to surrender separative existence and egoic control, to dissolve boundaries and structures in favor of underlying unities and undifferentiated wholes" (Tarnas, "The Planets", Archai vol. 1). Put that impulse in Libra, the sign of the pair, the contract, the balanced scale, and the unity it longs to dissolve into is another person. The boundary it blurs is the one between "me" and "us". The faith it keeps is that somewhere there is a partner who fits exactly, and that peace between people is natural, not an exception.

Dane Rudhyar, writing in 1966, gave the collective version: "Neptune … inspires all true forms of social cooperation and federation. It shows the way to an eventual global integration of humanity … a sort of spiritual United Nations" (Rudhyar, "The Planets and Their Symbols, Part Four"). He was not writing about Libra specifically, but no other Neptune era wears the sentence so well. The Charter of the United Nations was signed on June 26, 1945 (Wikipedia: United Nations), less than two years into the main stay. The Marshall Plan, the treaty-as-gift that rebuilt a former enemy, was enacted on April 3, 1948 (Wikipedia: Marshall Plan). A planet didn't cause either one. But both are the kind of thing a world does when its ruling fantasy is the fair and lasting pair.

In a single chart the same dream is smaller and more personal. The Neptune-in-Libra native tends to believe in the soulmate before they have met one, to find beauty almost devotional, to feel conflict as a kind of spiritual failure, and to be very, very good at seeing the best in the person across the table. Those are the gifts. The costs are the Neptunian ones, turned toward partnership: the partner imagined in place of the partner present; the peace kept so carefully that nobody says the true thing; the slow disillusion when the ideal and the human diverge. The romantic wiring of the sign is covered from the Venus side on Venus in Libra and from the Moon side on Moon in Libra; Neptune is the layer underneath both, the thing the whole generation hoped was true about love.

The marriage boom, in one Census table

Here is the number. The US Census Bureau's series "Estimated Median Age at First Marriage, by Sex: 1890 to Present" (Table MS-2, xls from census.gov) shows the median American first marrying at 26.1 (men) and 22.0 (women) in 1890, at 24.3 and 21.5 in 1940, and then falling through the postwar years to the lowest point in the entire series: 22.5 for men and 20.1 for women in 1956. It sat within a few tenths of that floor from 1949 through the mid-1960s, and has climbed ever since; the 2025 estimate is 30.8 and 28.4.

Read that against the Neptune dates. The people marrying at twenty in 1956 were mostly the Neptune-in-Virgo generation. The people born into those marriages, raised inside the picture of the young couple and the new house and the vow as the shape of adult life, were the Neptune-in-Libra cohort. Neptune describes what a generation is steeped in during its formative years, the ruling fantasy of the world it wakes up into, and this one woke up into the apex of the marriage ideal. That is the soulmate conviction at scale: not a personality trait, but the water the cohort swam in.

And it explains the arc that astrologers keep noticing in this generation's biographies. A cohort born into the marriage ideal reached its twenties in the late 1960s and 1970s, and a great many of them took the ideal apart, remarried, or redefined it. That is not a contradiction of Neptune in Libra. It is what the placement looks like when the dream meets weather: the partnership ideal survives, the particular form does not, and the search continues. The hub's generations table sets this cohort beside the published generation boundaries, which do not line up with Neptune's (Pew Research Center dates the Boomers from the 1946 birth surge, four years after Neptune's Libra ingress, and the Silent Generation to 1928–1945).

Who actually has it, and the three Virgo traps

Start with the one with a degree attached. Freddie Mercury, born September 5, 1946, has Neptune at roughly 7° Libra (cross-checked on Astro-Seek's chart), over a thousand days from any boundary. David Bowie (January 8, 1947), Elton John (March 25, 1947), Cher (May 20, 1946) and Meryl Streep (June 22, 1949) all sit mid-stay and mid-sign. Steve Jobs (February 24, 1955) is Libra by about ten months, at the far end of the main stay. A singer who built a career on operatic devotion, two musicians who treated persona as an art form, an actress famous for vanishing into other people: the "artistic, relationship-defined" commodity reading is not wrong, it is just undated.

Two natives prove the table matters. Joe Biden, born November 20, 1942, is often filed under Virgo because 1942 reads as a Virgo year; he is Neptune in Libra, 48 days into the first stint. Tom Hanks, born July 9, 1956, is the reverse: lists that round to the year call him Neptune in Scorpio, and he is Libra, inside the March–October 1956 retreat at about 27½° of the sign, about 102 days clear of either edge.

Now the traps, all of which the celebrity lists get wrong in the same direction. Paul McCartney (June 18, 1942) is Neptune in Virgo, 107 days before the Libra ingress. Muhammad Ali (January 17, 1942) is Virgo. Mick Jagger (July 26, 1943) is the subtle one: he was born inside the spring 1943 retreat, with Neptune at 29°49′ Virgo, seven days before it re-crossed into Libra, so he is Virgo too, at the very last degree. If a list tells you the Beatles and the Stones share Neptune in Libra, the list rounded the year. Degrees this close to a cusp are exactly what degree theory is for, and exactly where a calculator beats a table.

"Is Neptune in Libra good?" The question in the search box

Two answers. First, on dignity: none. Neptune has no traditional dignities at all, because the traditional scheme predates its discovery; its modern rulership of Pisces and exaltation in Leo are attributions made after 1846, and Libra appears in neither. There is no "Neptune in detriment" or "in fall" argument to have here, which is a relief, because those labels mislead even where they exist (see how the Virgo page unpicks its "detriment").

Second, on whether it is good to have: Neptune in Libra is good at harmony and poor at friction, and a life needs both. The placement tends to give grace, taste, a real talent for mediation and a capacity to idealise that makes people feel seen. Its shadow is the Neptune shadow aimed at relationship: romance as a kind of intoxicant, the reluctance to name a problem because naming it breaks the spell, and the particular grief of discovering that a soulmate is a person. Liz Greene's line about Neptune generally fits this sign better than most: "The longing for redemption is an ancient, strange and many-headed daimon, which dwells within even the most earthbound and prosaic of souls" (Greene, The Astrological Neptune and the Quest for Redemption). In Libra the redeemer is expected to arrive as a partner.

One confusion to clear: Neptune in Libra is not Neptune in the 7th house, though several guides run them together. The sign is generational and says what the era idealised; the 7th house is personal, depends on birth time, and can hold anyone's Neptune from any decade. A 1950 birth with Neptune in Libra in the 10th house expresses the partnership ideal through career and public role; the same birth with Neptune in the 4th expresses it through home. The Neptune opposition: what the oldest natives are living through

Neptune's slow cycle aspects its own natal place at predictable ages: a sextile around 27 to 28, a square around 40 to 42, a trine around 54 to 56, and an opposition in the early-to-mid eighties. For this cohort, the square came while Neptune crossed Capricorn (January 1984 to January 1998; the 1942–43 births felt it first, the 1957 births last), and the trine while Neptune crossed Aquarius (1998 to 2012). Robert Hand, in Planets in Transit, writes of the last of these that it "will not occur to anyone before they are in their mid-eighties" (Hand, Planets in Transit), and it is the one aspect of the series most people never reach. The Neptune-in-Libra generation is reaching it.

Neptune is in Aries as of this page's latest build, where it has been since January 26, 2026 (first ingress March 30, 2025, with a retreat into Pisces from October 22, 2025 to January 25, 2026), and it stays until March 23, 2039 (its final exit). Aries is the sign opposite Libra, so transiting Neptune is opposing every natal Neptune in Libra in turn, degree by degree: the October 1942 – April 1943 vanguard and the late-1943 births, whose Neptune sits in the first few degrees of Libra, have their opposition exact across 2025–2027, at about 83 to 84; the 1950 births around mid-sign reach it in the early 2030s; the 1955–57 births at 29° Libra not until about 2037–39, finishing during the 2038–39 retreat into Aries. Neptune is retrograde as of this build (since July 7, 2026, stationing direct December 12, 2026), which is why each degree gets crossed three times rather than once.

What does the opposition mean for someone in their eighties? Astrologers read it as seeing one's life ideals from the far side: the partnership dream of 1950 looked at from 2030, with the knowledge of how it went. For a cohort whose Neptune was the soulmate, that is often a reckoning with what love actually turned out to be, and, not rarely, a late and unexpected peace with it. Libra against Aries: the generation being born opposite this one

There is a neat symmetry in the timing. The babies born since March 2025 (bar the three-month retreat into Pisces that winter) have Neptune in Aries, the opposite seat: where Libra dreamed of the pair, Aries dreams of the self that acts. Great-grandparents and great-grandchildren, with Neptunes facing each other across the zodiac, which is about as close as Neptune gets to a family argument. The signs either side of Libra tell the rest of the story: the Virgo cohort before it, who dreamed of service, and the Scorpio cohort after it, who inherited the soulmate ideal and dragged it through the 1960s.

The next Neptune in Libra is cycle arithmetic, not a tabled date. Neptune's orbital period is 164.8 years, so counting from the 1942 ingress puts the next arrival around 2106–07; our verified ingress table ends with the Gemini ingress of May 12, 2052, and the exact day will depend on where that year's retrograde loop lands on the Virgo–Libra cusp. Between August 1957 and then, nobody is born with Neptune in Libra, which means the cohort described on this page, which left the sky 69 years ago, is the only one any of us will meet.
