Neptune in Scorpio: The Boomers' Dissolving Taboo, 1955–1970

Ask three tables when Neptune entered Scorpio and you'll get three answers: 1955, 1956, 1957. All three are right, for part of a year each, which is the first thing this page fixes. Neptune crossed the Libra–Scorpio line five times on its way in and the Scorpio–Sagittarius line three times on its way out, and anyone born in 1956, 1957 or 1970 needs the month, not the year. The cohort that shares this placement is, as of 2026, roughly 56 to 71 years old: the later Baby Boomers and the first six years of Generation X.

The second thing it fixes is the meaning. The commodity reading of this Neptune is "sex, death, the occult, addiction, the Boomer shadow", and that is the right list in the wrong tone. What this cohort was born into was a fifteen-year run in which those exact subjects stopped being unmentionable. The Pill, psychedelics on a university payroll, a hundred thousand people in one San Francisco neighbourhood, a best-seller about dying, a Hollywood hit about a pregnant woman and the Devil: Neptune does not cause any of that, but it is an unusually clean picture of what our Neptune sign guide calls the dream a generation is born into. Neptune signs are generational; this is the Scorpio chapter of the audit.

Neptune in Libra wanted the perfect pair. But Neptune in Scorpio wanted the truth about what happens between the pair, and after. Call it the dissolving taboo.

Four stints, two false starts: the dates first

Neptune's retrograde loop runs about five months a year, and at every sign boundary it tends to cross, back up, and cross again. Scorpio got the worst of it: two retreats on the way in and one on the way out. Civil UT dates; each row runs to the day before the next:

So 1956 splits three ways (Scorpio, Libra, Scorpio), 1957 splits three ways (Scorpio, Libra, Scorpio) and 1970 splits three ways (Sagittarius, Scorpio, Sagittarius). Every year from 1958 to 1969 is Scorpio without argument. Born 1955 to 1970: the Boomers' Neptune, and the Gen X tail

The Pew Research Center dates the Baby Boom from the 1946 birth surge to 1964 and Generation X from 1965 to 1980 (Pew, "The Whys and Hows of Generations Research"). Neptune does not respect either boundary. The first decade of Boomers carries Neptune in Libra; this placement begins in the last week of 1955 and runs six years into Gen X. So "the Boomers' Neptune" is accurate in the sense that matters culturally, since these are the Boomers who were teenagers and twenty-somethings when the 1960s happened, but it is worth being exact: a 1950 Boomer and a 1968 Gen Xer do not share it, and a 1962 Boomer and a 1968 Gen Xer do.

As of 2026 the main-stay cohort is about 56 to 69, with the 1955–57 vanguard up to 71. That makes this the third-oldest living Neptune generation, after the Virgo and Libra cohorts, and the one passing through its sixties. What dissolved: the taboo, dated

Richard Tarnas describes Neptune as governing the impulse "to dissolve boundaries and structures in favor of underlying unities" (Tarnas, "The Planets", Archai vol. 1). Scorpio is the sign of the things a culture keeps behind a door: sex, death, the body's secrets, other people's money, power, the occult. Put the dissolver on the door and you get fifteen years in which the door comes off. The record, in order:

The Pill. Enovid "was first approved on June 10, 1957, by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for treatment of menstrual disorders", five days before Neptune's last retreat into Libra, and "the FDA approved an additional indication for use as a contraceptive on June 23, 1960" (Wikipedia: Enovid), three years into the main stay. Sex detached from reproduction, by prescription, is about as literal as a Neptune-in-Scorpio event can be. Psychedelics. The Harvard Psilocybin Project, run by Timothy Leary and Richard Alpert, "began some time in 1960 and lasted until March 1962" (Wikipedia: Harvard Psilocybin Project); "Harvard fired Leary and his colleague Richard Alpert (later known as Ram Dass) in May 1963", and on January 14, 1967 at the Human Be-In Leary "coined the famous phrase 'Turn on, tune in, drop out'" (Wikipedia: Timothy Leary). Non-ordinary states of consciousness, the most Neptunian subject there is, went from laboratory to slogan in seven years.

The crowd. The Summer of Love, "a major social phenomenon that occurred in San Francisco during the summer of 1967", drew "as many as 100,000 people" to Haight-Ashbury and Golden Gate Park (Wikipedia: Summer of Love). The occult, in a multiplex. Rosemary's Baby, "a 1968 American psychological horror film written and directed by Roman Polanski, based on Ira Levin's 1967 novel", opened in the US on June 12, 1968 (Wikipedia: Rosemary's Baby). Death, on the best-seller list. Elisabeth Kübler-Ross's five stages, "denial, anger, bargaining, depression and acceptance", were "introduced by Kübler-Ross in her 1969 book On Death and Dying", drawn from her work with terminally ill patients (Wikipedia: Five stages of grief). Dying, the last taboo, got a framework and a paperback months before Neptune left the sign.

None of this is astrology causing history. It's what the cohort was born into, the ruling fantasy of the world they grew up in: that the hidden should be spoken, that the body and the psyche and the grave could be looked at directly, and that looking would set people free. That is the Neptune-in-Scorpio ideal. The places it fell short are the Neptune-in-Scorpio shadow, and the cohort knows them better than anyone.

"Is Neptune in Scorpio good or bad?" Addiction, obsession and the short answer

Neither, by dignity: Neptune has no traditional dignities, its modern ones (Pisces rulership, plus a disputed Leo exaltation) do not involve Scorpio, and the "Neptune is strong in water signs" line you will find on some pages is a vibe, not a rule. What the sign does is change Neptune's method. In Libra the longing went toward another person; in Scorpio it goes toward intensity, toward the real thing under the polite thing, toward experiences strong enough to dissolve the self. Robert Hand's aphorism fits this seat almost too well: "Saturn is the illusion that there is a reality that is truth; Neptune is the truth that there isn't" (Hand, Essays on Astrology). Scorpio wants the truth. Neptune in Scorpio wants the truth that there is no floor.

The gifts are real: psychological depth, an instinct for the subtext, a refusal to be fobbed off with the official story, a capacity for devotion that goes all the way down. The costs are the famous ones. The era's relationship with drugs is not a stereotype invented by astrologers, it is the history above; and in a single chart the same pull shows up as whatever dissolves the boundary fastest, which can be a substance, a person, a belief, or a crisis. Obsession gets mistaken for insight. Intensity gets mistaken for intimacy. A 2014 r/astrology post about this cohort reaches for the phrase "collective despair" in its title (r/astrology), which is too strong as a verdict and exactly right as a description of the placement's low tide. None of it is destiny. If you want the emotional layer of the same sign without the generational fog, Moon in Scorpio is the personal version of "feels everything, trusts nothing"; and the love-and-loyalty version is Venus in Scorpio. Neptune is the generation's ideal running underneath both.

The "Neptune in Scorpio woman", and the 8th-house mix-up

Two search-box ghosts, handled together. The placement does not come in a gendered edition: "Neptune in Scorpio woman" pages describe the same fifteen-year ideal with different pronouns, and half the women born 1955–1970 would not recognise themselves in the femme-fatale copy. If the question under the question is "how does this play out in my relationships?", the answer is: through Venus, Mars and the 7th house, which are personal, rather than through Neptune's sign, which is not.

The second ghost is the 8th house. Several guides file "Neptune in Scorpio" and "Neptune in the 8th house" under one heading because Scorpio is the 8th sign; they are different things at different scales. The sign is generational, shared with everyone your age. The house is personal, set by the time and place of birth, and a 1990 birth can have Neptune in the 8th while a 1962 birth has Neptune in Scorpio in the 2nd, which points the dissolving-taboo theme at money and self-worth rather than at shared resources and death. Madonna at 2° Scorpio: who has it, and the Tom Hanks trap

The summer of 1958 alone produced three of the cohort's emblems. Madonna, born August 16, 1958, has Neptune at about 2° Scorpio (cross-checked on Astro-Seek's chart), a year into the main stay. Prince (June 7, 1958) and Michael Jackson (August 29, 1958) sit within weeks of her, the three performers who spent the 1980s dragging sex, religion and the body into pop's daylight, all born as Neptune cleared the first degrees of the sign. Barack Obama (August 4, 1961) and Princess Diana (July 1, 1961) are mid-stay; Johnny Depp (June 9, 1963) and Kurt Cobain (February 20, 1967) are deep in it, hundreds of days from any boundary. Matt Damon, born October 8, 1970, is the interesting one: he is inside the May–November 1970 retreat, Neptune at 29° Scorpio, 29 days before the final exit. That passes as Scorpio, but it is a border post; anyone born January 4 – May 1, 1970, or from November 6, 1970 onward, is Neptune in Sagittarius.

Now the trap the celebrity lists fall into. Tom Hanks, born July 9, 1956, appears on "Neptune in Scorpio celebrities" pages because 1956 rounds to a Scorpio year. He is Neptune in Libra, inside the March–October 1956 retreat, at about 27½° Libra and about 102 days clear of either boundary. He belongs on the Libra page, and he is the reason the stint table above exists. Degrees this close to a cusp are what degree theory and a proper calculator are for; a year table cannot see them.

The cohort's Neptune cycle: the square was 1998–2012, not 1984

Neptune aspects its own natal place on a fixed schedule: sextile around 27 to 28, square around 40 to 42, trine around 54 to 56, opposition in the early-to-mid eighties. Howard Sasportas puts the square "around the age of 42" and the trine "around the age of 55" (Sasportas, The Gods of Change). Mapped onto this cohort, with Neptune in Scorpio, the square came from Aquarius, which Neptune crossed from January 28, 1998 to April 2011 (with the usual retreats): the 1957–58 births at 0°–4° Scorpio had it in 1998–99, the mid-1960s births in the mid-2000s, the 1969–70 births at 27°–29° in 2010–12. Several pages put this generation's square in 1984–86. That was the sextile: Neptune entered Capricorn, 60 degrees from Scorpio, on January 18, 1984, when the oldest natives were 26 to 28. Hand calls the square part of "the 'crisis of middle age'" (Hand, Planets in Transit), and for this cohort the middle-age crisis was a turn-of-the-millennium event, not a Reagan-era one.

The trine came from Pisces, the sign Neptune rules in modern astrology, which it crossed from 2011 to March 29, 2025, with a last retreat from October 22, 2025 to January 25, 2026: the 1958 births had it around 2012, the 1969 births around 2024–25. For the whole cohort that transit is complete. The opposition will come from Taurus, the sign opposite Scorpio, which Neptune enters on May 21, 2038 (with a retreat into Aries from October 21, 2038 to March 22, 2039) and crosses until 2051–52: the 1955–57 vanguard at 0°–3° Scorpio meets it in 2038–40, at about 80 to 83, and the 1970 retreat births not until around 2051.

Neptune is in Aries as of this page's latest build, since January 26, 2026, until March 23, 2039 (its final exit). Aries makes no major aspect to Scorpio (the 150-degree quincunx is a minor one), so this cohort is in the gap between its Neptune trine, which ended for good when Neptune left Pisces 6 months ago, and its Neptune opposition, which begins with the Taurus ingress. Neptune is retrograde as of this build (since July 7, 2026, stationing direct December 12, 2026), the same annual loop that produced the four stints above. Next Neptune in Scorpio: around 2120, beyond the table

Neptune's orbital period is 164.8 years (Wikipedia: Neptune), so the next Scorpio ingress falls roughly 165 years after December 1955: around 2120, give or take the retrograde shuffle that opens every stay. Our verified ingress table runs to the Gemini ingress of May 12, 2052, so treat 2120 as cycle arithmetic, not a computed date. Between November 1970 and then, nobody is born with Neptune in Scorpio; it left the sky 56 years ago, and nobody alive will meet another Neptune-in-Scorpio generation. The neighbours on either side are still with us too: the Libra cohort before, who dreamed of the pair, and the Sagittarius cohort after, Gen X, who inherited the open door and went looking for a guru to walk through it.

One more note on what the placement can and cannot tell you. Sign is generational; house is personal; aspect is biographical. If Neptune sits on your Sun, Moon or rising, the dissolving-taboo theme is yours by name. If it sits quietly in a house with no aspects, it is the era you grew up in and not much more.
