Saturn in the 11th House: The Outsider in the Group, and an Ancient Rule About Turning Thirty

"Will I always stay without close friends?" That's close to how the first post in a long AstrologyWeekly thread on this placement put it, from someone who found small talk hard and groups harder. Replies from people with the same Saturn describe the same thing: anxiety about fitting in, a preference for two real friends over twenty acquaintances, the sense of standing slightly outside every circle.

The older books are kinder than the forum threads. The Vedic texts count this among the houses where Saturn improves with time, and a fourth-century delineation puts a date on it, though the date is for position and possessions, not friends: "after his thirtieth year."

Quick answer

Saturn in the 11th house is read as caution about friends and groups. You may feel like an outsider, keep a small circle and choose friends for loyalty, and you can be the dependable one in a group who still finds it hard to ask for help. Traditional texts rate it well for long-term gains, and Firmicus dates position and possessions to after thirty.

The 11th house follows the Midheaven on the chart wheel, and the cusp between the 11th and 12th is where most mix-ups happen. Nearly half of all Placidus 11th-house Saturns are 12th-house Saturns in whole-sign houses.

Will I always feel like the outsider in groups?

Feeling excluded now doesn't tell you how every future group will treat you. Liz Greene, whose Saturn: A New Look at an Old Devil (1976) is still the best-known psychological reading of the planet, describes the feeling exactly: Saturn in the 11th "may display his usual aloofness and isolation and thereby mark the individual as a 'lone wolf', one who somehow does not fit into the group" (p.67). She calls the usual effect "a deep, although often concealed, feeling of loneliness" (p.68). On the same page she adds that the placement "is often interpreted as giving few and faithful friends; and it is the quality, rather than the quantity, which is important."

It also helps to know how common a thin social life is. In a 2023 Pew survey of 5,057 US adults, "some 8% say they have no close friends." If you're in that 8%, you have plenty of company, and if you have two close friends you'd call at three in the morning, there's no reason to add more for appearances.

The first poster in that AstrologyWeekly thread came back later with an update: people had started telling them they hadn't had such a good conversation in a long time. And being well known in a group isn't the same as letting anyone get close, as the famous charts below show.

What Firmicus actually said about turning thirty

Most Saturn pages say things improve "after thirty" without a source. For this house there's an old one, and it's about status, not friends. Firmicus Maternus, writing around 335 CE (Mathesis III.2.25, in Bram's translation), gives Saturn in the 11th "moderately good fortune," then says: "When an important promotion is destined for the native, he will receive the same position his father had, but only after his thirtieth year. Before his thirtieth year whatever he achieves will be lost; he will not attain position or possessions until after his thirtieth year."

Firmicus doesn't say why thirty. We'd point at Saturn's own cycle: it takes about 29.5 years to go once round the zodiac, so everyone's Saturn returns to its birth position around 29. That link is our observation, not his, and we can't show whether his line shaped the "after thirty" claim modern pages make. In our simulation of 240,000 births, transiting Saturn got back into the natal Saturn's house at a median age of 28.0, about two years before Firmicus's threshold.

Astrologers read the return in the 11th as a time when your circle gets reviewed. Friendships that depended on seeing each other every day may need deliberate effort to survive a move or a job change, and some won't. The practical Saturn return survival guide includes an exercise for reviewing your commitments, your friend group among them.

Good fortune in one text, difficult friends in another

The ancients called the 11th the Good Daimon, the house of good spirit, and they thought it could soften a malefic. Vettius Valens, in Book II of the Anthologies (Riley's translation), is blunt: "If malefics are in conjunction with the Good Daimon, they cannot do any evil." The Vedic texts agree from a different angle. The 11th is one of the four upachaya houses, the 3rd, 6th, 10th and 11th, where a slow malefic is expected to improve with age, and Phaladeepika (VIII.24) is unusually warm: someone with Saturn in the 11th "will have a long span of life, lasting wealth and good income, will be brave, free from disease and moneyed." That's a historical prediction; a house placement can't tell you whether you'll stay healthy or live long.

William Lilly is harsher about friends. In the aphorisms of Book III of Christian Astrology (1647) he writes: "Saturn in the 11th gives false and sluggish Friends." Lilly also calls the 11th the house where "Jupiter doth especially rejoyce," which is why Jupiter in the 11th gets the easy version of this territory. Saturn in Jupiter's favourite house raises a different question: how much responsibility can a friendship carry before it starts to feel like work? Modern psychological astrologers take that question further than Lilly did, and they point it back at the person.

"Your friends will restrict you" versus "you restrict your friendships"

The clearest modern answer to Lilly is a worked example from Howard Sasportas's The Twelve Houses (1985), and it happens to be this exact placement. An "event-orientated" astrologer, he writes, "might say to a man with Saturn in the 11th house something like 'Your friends will restrict and disappoint you.' This may be true, but what good does such an interpretation do for anyone?" (p.20). His alternative: "it is not friendship which restricts him, but his own restrictions which limit his friendships" (p.21). And: "How infinitely more beneficial this interpretation of an 11th house Saturn is than 'Sorry, old chap, your friends are no good'."

In practice that means the loneliness is at least partly under your control. The habits astrologers attach to the placement (waiting to be sure before you invest, holding back in groups until you know the rules, judging new people hard) protect you from shallow friendships and also from most new ones. A group that meets regularly gives you repeated chances to find out whether you actually like the same people, which suits a planet that trusts what's proved over time.

Famous friendships in charts with rated birth times

We only name people whose birth time is rated AA (a birth record) or A (from the person or family) at Astro-Databank, and we computed their Placidus houses ourselves. The three leads below have Saturn at least five degrees from any cusp.

George Clooney (AA) has Saturn at 29°51' Capricorn, the last degree of Saturn's own sign, in the 11th. In a 2020 GQ interview he confirmed giving fourteen friends $1 million each in 2013, because they had helped him "over a period of 35 years," including when he was broke. Loyalty kept over decades and then repaid is the placement read at its most generous. Stevie Wonder (A) has Saturn at 12°35' Virgo in the 11th, and used "Happy Birthday" (1980) to campaign for Martin Luther King Jr.'s birthday to become a national holiday. The 11th is also the house of causes and collective hopes. Johnny Cash (A, time from his mother) has Saturn at 0°15' Aquarius in the 11th. In 1985 he released the album Highwayman with his friends Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson and Kris Kristofferson, and the four first toured together as the Highwaymen in 1990, a band made out of friendships.

Greta Garbo (AA), famous for wanting to be left alone, also has Saturn in the 11th, which is a useful reminder that the placement doesn't dictate how sociable anyone is. Robin Williams (AA) is a tempting example, since his friendship with Christopher Reeve from Juilliard lasted their lives, but his Saturn is only 3.1 degrees inside the 11th cusp, the line it shares with the 10th, and a birth time fifteen minutes later moves it. We'd call him a probable 11th, not a proof.

Gemini rising and the 2026 to 2028 transit

From February 13, 2026 to April 12, 2028, Saturn is in Aries, and in whole-sign houses that's the 11th house for Gemini risings the whole way through. On a Placidus chart the dates depend on your own cusps. Astrologers read the transit as a time to look at your commitments to friends and groups, and at whether you've taken on a role you actually want. In whole-sign houses the transit house comes from your rising sign, which depends on your birth time, so if you're not sure of it, check your rising sign first.

Transit note, October 2026

Transiting Saturn is in Aries from February 2026 until April 2028. In whole-sign houses that puts it in the 11th house for Gemini risings for the whole stay. It is retrograde from July 26, 2026 (at 14°45′ Aries) until December 10, 2026, going back over ground it already crossed. When Saturn moves into Taurus, the 11th-house transit passes to Cancer risings. A transit is a passing season, not the birth placement this page is about. On a Placidus chart the dates can differ by months, sometimes by more than a year, because the house cusps rarely sit at 0° of a sign.

Is your Saturn in the 11th or the 12th?

Look at our three leads again. Clooney is 11th in both house systems. Stevie Wonder and Johnny Cash are Placidus 11th and whole-sign 12th. That split is normal: in our simulation of births between 25 and 55 degrees north, a Placidus 11th-house Saturn stays in the whole-sign 11th in 44.5% of charts, moves to the whole-sign 12th in 47.7%, and falls back to the 10th in 6.0%; the last 1.8% land in the 1st or 9th. If your chart shows a whole-sign 12th, the 12th-house Saturn page is the other half of your reading, and it covers solitude you chose as well as isolation you didn't.

Retrograde Saturn adds a curiosity. Natal Saturn is retrograde in about 36% of charts, and a retrograde Saturn sits roughly opposite the Sun, so its house usually matches one side of the horizon for the Sun. With Saturn retrograde in the 11th, the birth was at night in 81.9% of the charts we simulated. Daytime cases are ordinary enough, though, and Stevie Wonder is one.

In your own chart, the 11th house is ruled by whatever planet rules the sign on its cusp, which is worth knowing before you read Saturn here as the whole story, and the house-by-house map shows how to find it.

FAQ

Does Saturn in the 11th house mean most of my friends will be older than me?

Some people with the placement say so, but it isn't a rule. A young person with Saturn here may be more comfortable with people who already take things seriously, and those people are often older. What you may really be looking for is experience or reliability in a friend, and that doesn't require an age gap.

Is Saturn in the 11th house good for money and income?

Several traditional texts favour it. Phaladeepika promises 'lasting wealth and good income', the 11th is one of the four upachaya houses where Vedic astrology expects a malefic to improve with time, and Firmicus puts position and possessions 'after his thirtieth year'. Astrologers read that as gains that build through long relationships and networks rather than windfalls. It's an astrological interpretation, not evidence of how your income will go.

Can Saturn in the 11th house delay finding a partner?

Not directly. The 11th is friends and groups, and the marriage house is the 7th. The indirect path is ordinary: a lot of partners are met through friends, and someone who keeps a small circle and skips the big group events meets fewer new people. If you'd like to meet more, a regular activity you enjoy gives you repeated chances to talk, and you don't need to wait for a transit.

Does Saturn in the 11th house slow down my hopes and goals?

Lilly gives the 11th "Friendship, Hope, Trust, Confidence", so the house covers hopes as well as friends, and Saturn there is usually read as goals that take longer and need more planning than you'd like. Firmicus's line about the thirtieth year is about position and possessions, not wishes, so it isn't a promise that your plans pay off at 30. Treat it as a description of pace. It says nothing about whether a particular goal will work.
