North Node in the 11th House: Friends, Groups and Lilly's Table of Sincere Signs

A birth chart wheel with the line of the lunar nodes running across it, the North Node in the terracotta 11th-house sector and the South Node opposite in the 5th

Modern astrologers read an 11th-house North Node as learning to share decisions and keep friendships going. The older books asked something else: whether the 11th is a good house for the node at all. On that, they're kinder to this house than to almost any other.

One of them does something rare. William Lilly, in 1647, gave the Dragon's Head in the 11th a reading of its own, about friends, and split it by sign. Six signs get sincere friends. Six get friends who are "partly sincere, partly deceitfull."

Quick answer

An 11th-house North Node is read as learning to take part in friendships, groups and shared causes, where the result belongs to more than one person. The old sources mostly rate this house well for the node, and Lilly made the friends depend on the node's sign: sincere in six signs, mixed in the other six.

Is the 11th one of the best houses for the North Node?

In the old books it's close. This is where the sources agree most, which isn't true of the North Node's other houses. Lilly treated the Head as a benefic in general: "of himself a Fortune," he wrote, adding from his own practice, "I ever found the ☊ equivalent to either of the Fortunes" (Christian Astrology, 1647, p. 83; ☊ is his symbol for the Dragon's Head). The 11th also has a good name of its own. It's the house Jupiter is said to rejoice in, which is why Jupiter's own 11th-house placement gets called the planet's home ground.

The Vedic texts, which call the North Node Rahu and usually treat it as a malefic, are unusually positive here too. The Phaladeepika says that with Rahu in the 11th "the person born will be prosperous" and "will be long-lived," though the same verse adds fewer children and a disease (VIII.27, Sastri, p. 95). The Saravali counts the 11th among three houses where Rahu wards off harm, provided benefics aspect it (12.3–5, p. 37). R. Santhanam's note to the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra says Rahu and Ketu "give favourable results in the 3rd, 6th and 11th, the three Upachaya houses," but that's the translator's gloss, not a verse. Both traditions like this house, then, and they still disagree on whether the node helps in general, a split al-Biruni recorded in 1029 (Book of Instruction §384).

"Best" still depends on what you want from life. Modern readings put the weight on friendships, clubs and shared projects, including the unglamorous work of keeping them going. If you'd rather work alone and be known for it, this axis will feel like it's pulling the wrong way, at least at first. Fame is a separate question. The Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra does list "name and fame" among the results of Rahu's sub-period within the Sun's period, if Rahu is in an upachaya house, which Santhanam glosses as the 3rd, 6th, 10th or 11th (ch. 52 vv. 23–26½). That's a rule about a time window with conditions attached, and an old prediction isn't evidence that it will happen. The texts that read the placement itself, the Phaladeepika and Lilly, tie it to prosperity and friends.

Lilly's friends table: sincere in six signs, mixed in six

Lilly's chapter "Of Friends" in Book III of Christian Astrology tells you to look at the planets in the 11th house first. When Jupiter and Venus are there and well placed, he says, they show "aboundance of good and profitable Friends," and their love "is sincere, and will be profitable to the Native." Then he says the Dragon's Head shows the same, with a condition: "especially if it be in Gemini, Pisces, Cancer, Taurus, Libra, Leo." In the other six signs the Head means what weak benefics mean, "indifferency or moderate Friendship," friends who are "partly sincere, partly deceitfull" (pp. 634–635).

North Node in the 11th, in…Lilly's reading of your friends
Gemini, Pisces, Cancer, Taurus, Libra, LeoMany good friends whose love is sincere and useful to you
Sagittarius, Scorpio, Capricorn, Aquarius, Aries, VirgoModerate friendship; friends "partly sincere, partly deceitfull"

It is the fullest reading of the North Node in a natal house that we found in a classical text. Lilly mentions the node in only a couple of other houses, and Bonatti, the other big medieval source for the nodes by house, wrote his house-by-house list for the Tail and takes up the Head in separate rules, such as Consideration 111 on the Head in the Ascendant. Lilly gives no reason for the split, and it doesn't follow the elements: each row mixes fire, earth, air and water. One pattern we noticed, and it's only our observation, is that all four signs ruled by Mars and Saturn (Aries, Scorpio, Capricorn, Aquarius) fall in the mixed row, along with Sagittarius, where the old Persian and Greek lists that al-Biruni reports put the Tail's exaltation (§443). Gemini, where those lists exalt the Head, is in the sincere row.

Notice where Aquarius lands: in the mixed row. That doesn't make anyone's friends fake, and the table isn't evidence that a particular friend will deceive you.

Which row are you in?

Lilly's table runs on the node's sign, and that usually needs only your birth date. The free North Node calculator gives your node's sign and degree; the house still takes a full chart.

The Aquarius transit and your birth placement

Modern astrologers pair Aquarius with the 11th house as its natural sign, and the transiting North Node moves through Aquarius from July 26, 2026 to March 25, 2028. Neither fact makes a node in Aquarius the same placement as a node in the 11th. A natal node in Aquarius is a sign placement, and the birth date usually settles it (the time matters only for a birth on a day the node changes sign); each stretch lasts about a year and a half. A natal node in the 11th is a house placement that needs your birth time. The transit is the moving node in the sky, which crosses every chart. The Aquarius node guide explains the sign placement and the dated transit. The basics of what the North Node is explain why the sign and the house are read separately.

Moving backward through the zodiac, the transiting node spends about a year and a half in each whole-sign house. The note below says which rising sign has it in the 11th.

Transit note, October 2026

The transiting North Node has been in Aquarius since July 26, 2026 and moves on into Capricorn on March 26, 2028 (US Eastern dates). In whole-sign houses that puts it in the 11th house for Aries risings, with the South Node in their 5th. From March 26, 2028 the same transit passes to Pisces risings. Each rising sign gets about a year and a half of this once every 18.6 years. It is a passing transit, not the birth placement this page is about.

Your natal node holds still for life. A free ZodiScope account tracks what moves: each day it lists the transit aspects landing on the planets in your birth chart.

Why the Sun so often shares this house

In our model of 400,000 simulated U.S. births from 1960 to 2024 (CDC birth-time data, spread across U.S. counties), the North Node lands in the 11th about one time in twelve, like every other house. What stands out is the Sun. In 11.8% of modeled births with an 11th-house North Node, the Sun is in the 11th as well, the highest figure for any house and well above the 9.1% average. Birth timing explains it. A Placidus 11th-house Sun means a mid-morning birth, and mid-morning is one of the busiest times for U.S. births, as the Sun's own 11th-house page shows. The node can sit in any house at any hour, while the Sun's house is tied to the time of day.

The house label can also change with the recorded time or the house system. In about half of modeled births the node sits within 30 minutes of a Placidus house change, and even a time 15 minutes off in one direction moves it in about 1 in 8. Get the birth date wrong by one day, with the clock time right, and the house moves in only about 3% of them. House systems disagree as well: a Placidus 11th-house node stays in the 11th on a whole-sign chart in 48% of modeled births and moves to the 12th in 46%. The true node, which we use, and the mean node are never more than about 2 degrees apart, so that choice changes the house far less often, in about 3% of births.

George W. Bush, Bruce Springsteen and the few charts with one safe answer

These five come out in the 11th whichever way we cast them: true or mean node, Placidus or whole sign, and the clock moved 15 minutes earlier or later.

  • George W. Bush, 43rd U.S. president (Astro-Databank AA, hospital records), born 7:26 a.m., July 6, 1946, New Haven, Connecticut: North Node at 20°35′ Gemini. A 7:20 a.m. variant also gives the 11th.
  • Bruce Springsteen (AA), born 10:50 p.m., September 23, 1949, Long Branch, New Jersey: North Node at 16°40′ Aries.
  • Conan O'Brien (AA, birth certificate quoted), born 1:48 p.m., April 18, 1963, Boston: North Node at 24°45′ Cancer.
  • Gwyneth Paltrow (AA, birth certificate in hand), born 5:25 p.m., September 27, 1972, Los Angeles: North Node at 23°06′ Capricorn.
  • Will Smith (A), born 9:47 p.m., September 25, 1968, Philadelphia: North Node at 9°37′ Aries.

In our checks, only about one famous chart in four gives a single, safe answer for the node's house, which is why these five made the list and many others didn't. None of it measures what the node did in their lives.

The South Node in the 5th house: the solo act

Schulman's phrase for this side of the axis is that the person "was the sole creator" (p. 91). The 5th is romance, play, children and creative work done for your own pleasure, and on this axis it's read as the comfortable end: the stage you already know how to stand on. Whatever you make of his past-life language, the habit is easy to recognize: keeping every part of the work under your own control.

None of that means giving up love, children or art. The 5th stays in your chart. Your own projects still matter. The question is whether you make room for anyone else's ideas. In love, this reading gives more weight to the friendship inside a relationship. It doesn't tell you which attraction to pursue, and it can't tell you whether you'll have children. With the node the other way round, the worry is about children, and the "childless" verse for a 5th-house North Node traces where it comes from.

Learning to be a friend, and other modern readings

Modern karmic astrology, which reads the North Node by house as a life direction, shifts the emphasis from the friends you receive to how you take part in friendship. Martin Schulman wrote in 1975 that "through his eleventh house North Node he is to learn the value of friendship," and later that "friendships, clubs and societies become important to him for it is through such associations with others that he ultimately comes to sense his own identity" (Karmic Astrology Vol. 1, pp. 92–94). He also wrote that the person "will at one time in this life do much to further the career of another." Donna Cunningham put it more plainly on her blog in 2010: this node is "learning how to be a friend and what the proper boundaries are in friendship."

In practice that might look like someone who has always made things alone, songs or code or paintings, and who joins a band, an open-source project or a shared studio. Decisions get made with other people now, and some go a way they wouldn't have chosen. The growth this axis describes is staying in and contributing when the result isn't entirely yours. Joining doesn't cancel the solo work, either: what you learned making things alone is what you bring. The 11th is also the old house of hopes, and in how the 11th house is interpreted, long-term plans sit right next to friendship.

Cunningham's word "boundaries" matters here. Sharing decisions can feel awkward at first, and you can practice it and still leave a group that ignores your limits. In a fair group the give and take evens out over time: you lose some votes and win others, and the work and the credit are both shared. A group where your ideas never land, or where you do the work and someone else takes the credit, isn't the growth this reading describes.

FAQ

Will a North Node in the 11th house bring me loyal friends?

William Lilly, writing in 1647, said it depends on the node's sign. With the Dragon's Head in the 11th in Gemini, Pisces, Cancer, Taurus, Libra or Leo, he expected an 'aboundance of good and profitable Friends'. In Sagittarius, Scorpio, Capricorn, Aquarius, Aries or Virgo, he expected friends who were 'partly sincere, partly deceitfull'. Modern astrologers read the placement as learning how to be a friend, so loyalty is something you practice here as much as something you receive.

Does a North Node in the 11th house bring fame or a big following?

Not by itself. The 11th is the house of friends, groups and shared goals, and an audience isn't the same thing as a group you belong to. The Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra mentions fame only in a timing rule, for Rahu's sub-period inside the Sun's period when Rahu sits in the 3rd, 6th, 10th or 11th, and an old prediction like that isn't evidence it will happen. The Phaladeepika gives Rahu in the 11th prosperity and a long life, and Lilly gives friends. If anything, the South Node in the 5th is the end of this axis that's comfortable on a stage.

How should I approach making art with my North Node in the 11th house?

Modern readings point it toward work made with other people or for a group: a band, a shared studio, a community mural, an open-source project. The South Node in the 5th is the habit of making everything alone, which Schulman described as being 'the sole creator.' You don't have to give up solo work. The reading favors letting other people shape part of the result and showing the work to a group that cares about it.

Why do so many 11th-house North Nodes have the Sun in the 11th too?

Because of when U.S. babies are born, not because of anything the node does. In our model of 400,000 simulated U.S. births, the Sun shared the 11th in 11.8% of births with an 11th-house North Node, the highest figure for any house and above the 9.1% average. A Placidus 11th-house Sun means a mid-morning birth, one of the busiest times of day for U.S. births. The node itself can sit in any house at any hour, so the pairing tells you about birth timing, not about what the placement means.
