Why So Many People With the Sun in the 11th House Say They Have Few Friends

A glowing gold Sun with fine rays beside a gold Sun glyph and a twelve-sector chart wheel whose 11th house wedge, just before the Midheaven, is filled terracotta and numbered, on a deep navy starfield

Most write-ups of this placement promise friends, groups, networks and a busy social life. The people who have it often describe something else. A thread on r/Advancedastrology asking how to read 11th-house placements in people with few friends drew more than a hundred replies, and the top answer came from someone with several planets in the house who called themselves a loner.

The sources disagree too. Firmicus describes fortunate people helped by friends; an English translation of Saravali describes someone capable but "devoid of affection." And in Placidus houses an 11th-house Sun tells you one thing with no interpretation at all: you were born in the middle of the morning.

Quick answer

In Placidus houses, the Sun in the 11th means a birth in the middle third of the morning, between sunrise and solar noon. Groups, causes, patrons and plans are where this Sun is said to find itself. The old texts mostly call it fortunate, with honours through the goodwill of friends, but one Indian text describes a cooler, self-reliant person.

House typeSuccedent, in the day half of the chart; the Hellenistic "Good Spirit," where Jupiter rejoices
Time of birthPlacidus: about 8 to 10 a.m. sun time at the equinoxes; most U.S. births between 8:48 and 10:45 a.m. by the clock
Old reputationFortunate: high position, and honours "through the goodwill of friends" (Firmicus)
Vedic viewAn upachaya house of gains, where a hard planet like the Sun does well
The dissentSaravali: "devoid of affection," yet "successful in undertakings"

House checkA Placidus 11th is whole-sign 11th for 45.6% of U.S. births and whole-sign 12th for 48.4%

Born around 9 a.m.? Depending on the season and daylight time, that can put the Sun in the 12th, the 11th or the 10th. A fixed two-hour clock rule names the right house for only about half of U.S. births in our model, so use your real birth time and place.

Is it good to have the Sun in the 11th house?

By the old books, yes, and it's one of the few houses where Western and Indian texts mostly agree. Firmicus Maternus (Mathesis III.5, section 38, in Bram's 1975 translation, p.93) writes that with the Sun in the eleventh "the natives and their fathers are fortunate and hold high position; their prosperity increases over time." If Jupiter or Venus are well placed with the Sun, the good fortune grows, "for all these honors are obtained through the goodwill of friends." Malefics with the Sun don't touch the high position, he adds, but they keep harming the house of children.

The house had a good name long before that. The Hellenistic astrologers called it the Good Spirit (Agathos Daimon), the place where Jupiter rejoices, and Firmicus's chapter on the houses (II.19) calls it "the house of Jupiter." That's why Jupiter in the 11th house gets treated as the textbook case of a planet at home. The same chapter warns that "the Medium Caelum is often found in exact conjunction with this house," which matters for anyone checking their house system, below.

The Indian texts are just as kind. Mantreswara's Phaladeepika (VIII.4) promises that the Sun here makes a person "very wealthy and long-lived," a king with "no sorrow." Varahamihira's Brihat Jataka gives "wealthy," and its translator, V. Subrahmanya Sastri, adds that the Sun is good in the 11th "because he is sextile to the Lagna," the Ascendant. Vedic astrology also files the 11th among the upachaya houses, the houses of growth, where a hard planet improves things over time.

The friends house, and the loner who has it

So where does the loner come from? One classical text describes exactly that person. An English translation of Kalyana Varma's Saravali (30.12) says that with the Sun in the 11th, a person "will be interested in gathering money, be strong, will hate others, be devoid of servants, be himself a servant, be devoid of affection, be modest and will be successful in undertakings." It's a harsh list, and it's also oddly specific: someone capable, working, self-reliant and not warm in groups.

Alan Leo takes a middle path. In How to Judge a Nativity (1928 printing, pp.219–220) he calls the placement favourable and says it brings "the good-will of elders, superiors, masters," so that the native "rises through association with these and benefits by them, even though they may not be his friends in the sense of manifesting affection for him." That's the key. The 11th was never mainly a house of intimate friendship. It's the house of allies: patrons, colleagues, clubs, causes, the people who back you.

Robert Hand puts the modern version well. In Horoscope Symbols (1981, chapter 14) he writes that the Sun or Moon in the eleventh "indicates a particularly strong need for group interaction or for having friends," and that these people "will only really thrive when they live in the context of shared ideals and aspirations." A need isn't a guarantee. Someone who needs the right group and hasn't found it can feel more alone than someone who never cared.

If the problem is feeling lonely in a crowd, that's an emotional question, and the Moon's version of this house speaks to it directly: Moon in the 11th house covers the "plenty of friends, still lonely" complaint. The Sun's version is more about purpose. It asks which group you belong to, and it can take years to find one worth belonging to.

A mid-morning birth, and a very common one

In Placidus houses, the system most Western apps use, the Sun's house works like a clock. The time from sunrise to sunset is split into six equal parts. The 12th is the first, the 11th the second, the 10th the last stretch before solar noon. At the equinoxes the 11th runs from about 8 to 10 a.m. by a sundial, at any latitude. In summer the morning houses stretch and in winter they shrink.

We estimated how common it is with a model of real births: 400,000 simulated births drawn from the 2024 birth-time data in the CDC's natality file (time of day by month, weekday and delivery type), placed by state birth totals and county population because the public file has no birthplace, each given its Placidus house with Swiss Ephemeris. In that model 10.6% had the Sun in the 11th. The 10th came out at 10.5%, the same within our margin of error, so the two are effectively tied, each well above the 8.3% an even spread would give. The middle 80% of 11th-house births happened between 8:48 and 10:45 a.m. by the clock, with a median of 9:48.

Why so many? Hospitals. The CDC's own report on when babies are born, using 2013 births, found 8 a.m. is the busiest hour in the U.S., and cesareans with no trial of labor peak at that hour too. In our model, 39% of 11th-house Sun babies were cesareans with no trial of labor, against 23% of all births. Only the 12th house had a higher share. Summer helps too: 13.3% of June and July births had an 11th-house Sun, against 8.4% in December and January.

That's also why rules of thumb fail. Fixed two-hour clock rules, 8 to 10 a.m. for the 11th and so on round the day, name the right house for only 50.9% of births in our model, because daylight time and time zones put the typical American birth clock about 55 minutes ahead of the Sun. An exact time and place settle it; a guess doesn't.

The leader of the group, with an eye on the future

Modern readings build on the allies theme. Howard Sasportas, in The Twelve Houses (1985, p.96), writes that the Sun or Leo here "may have to be the leader, deriving a good proportion of its worth and identity from group involvement." Stephen Arroyo calls the 11th "probably the most future-oriented of all the houses," and says people with the Sun there "tend to be particularly attuned to the future, both in the sense of what they want to become and in the sense of how society is developing" (Astrology, Karma & Transformation, 2nd ed., 1992, pp.99–100).

In practice that tends to look like someone who works best inside an organisation with a mission: a nonprofit, a movement, a team building something new, a professional network they help run. The career readings lean toward technology, advocacy, community work and anything that depends on reputation among peers. The Vedic reading adds income: the 11th is the house of gains, and a Sun there is often read as earning through authority, public office or well-placed contacts.

On this reading, love follows the same route: partners met through friends, work groups or shared causes, and relationships that do best with a plan in them. Venus in the 11th house is the friends-to-lovers placement proper. The older rules are narrower. Ptolemy's marriage chapter (Tetrabiblos IV.5) puts the 11th among the eastern quadrants, so in a woman's chart he expected an early marriage or a younger husband. And Firmicus warns that malefics with an 11th-house Sun leave the high position alone but keep harming the house of children.

Group approval can start to matter more than your own plans. A sense of self that depends on belonging can keep someone in a group that no longer fits. The 11th's other old meaning, hopes and wishes, points to the fix: know what you want for yourself, and choose groups that serve it.

Not an Aquarius, even if it feels like one

The 11th is the eleventh house and Aquarius is the eleventh sign, so people with an 11th-house Sun hear they have an Aquarius vibe. A thread on r/astrology asked exactly that, and the poster's edit noted that everyone answering seemed to be a humanitarian. Steven Forrest's distinction (The Inner Sky, 1984, chapter 2) is the useful one: "signs are identity, while houses are the arena within which identity operates." For the 11th, our houses guide maps that arena as friendships, networks and long-term hopes.

So a Taurus Sun in the 11th brings steadiness and patience to its causes; a Leo Sun brings showmanship to them. In whole-sign houses an Aquarius Sun falls in the 11th only when Aries rises, so the echo people notice is usually a coincidence of sign and rising sign.

Mid-morning births on record

We used Astro-Databank birth times rated AA (from a birth certificate) and computed the houses with Swiss Ephemeris. All of these Suns stay in the Placidus 11th if the recorded time moves 35 minutes either way.

Frida Kahlo was born at 8:30 a.m. in Coyoacán, with the Sun at 13° Cancer. Salvador Dalí was born at 8:45 a.m. in Figueres, Sun at 20° Taurus. Angelina Jolie was born at 9:09 a.m. in Los Angeles, Sun at 13° Gemini. Two painters and an actor-director, three different Sun signs, all within forty minutes of each other on the clock. On a whole-sign chart Dalí keeps the 11th, while Kahlo and Jolie move to the 12th.

The clock can also correct a reading. For years Astro-Databank carried a rectified time of 6:21 p.m. for Jimmy Fallon, which put his Sun in the 7th, the partnership house. It now uses 9:50 a.m., the time he gave on The Tonight Show, and that puts his Sun in the 11th (rated A). Same man, same day, a different house, because of the clock.

Placidus 11th, whole-sign 12th

In our model of 2024 U.S. births, a Placidus 11th-house Sun was a whole-sign 11th 45.6% of the time and a whole-sign 12th 48.4% of the time. In whole-sign houses the rising sign is the whole 1st house, so a Sun early in the morning is often still in the sign just above the horizon. If your app says 12th and another says 11th, both can be right for their own system, and the 12th reads quite differently, starting with Firmicus's harsh verse on a 12th-house Sun.

Firmicus's warning about the Midheaven matters here too. In whole-sign houses the Midheaven, the highest point of the chart, can fall in the 11th sign rather than the 10th. A whole-sign 11th-house Sun close to the Midheaven is doing some of the work astrologers give to the 10th-house Sun that Vedic astrology rates strongest. The ancient authors quoted above worked in whole signs as well.

Transit note, October 2026

The Sun entered Libra on September 22, 2026 and moves into Scorpio on October 23, 2026 (US Eastern dates). In whole-sign houses that stretch puts the transiting Sun in the 11th house for Sagittarius risings. From October 23, 2026 until November 22, 2026 it is the turn of Capricorn risings. Every rising sign gets about a month of the Sun in its 11th house once a year, so this is a yearly season, not the birth placement this page is about. That one depends on the time of day you were born.

When someone's Sun lands in your 11th house

Chart comparison calls this the friendship overlay: the other person's Sun in your 11th house. Astrologers associate this overlay with friendship, shared plans and teamwork: someone who brings you into their circle and backs your plans.

On its own it doesn't say whether there's chemistry; other contacts carry that. To start without birth times, you can compare two birth dates side by side for the signs of the Sun, Mercury, Venus and Mars. Your own birth time and place set the houses; for them, a birth date is usually enough, unless their Sun falls close to one of your cusps.

FAQ

Does the Sun in the 11th house make you act like an Aquarius?

Not by itself. The 11th house and Aquarius share themes, groups, causes and the future, which is why people with the placement often hear they have an Aquarius vibe. But your Sun sign stays your Sun sign. A Cancer Sun in the 11th is still a Cancer: it brings care and loyalty to its groups and causes, where an Aquarius Sun brings ideas and independence. The house shows where the Sun acts, the sign shows how.

Does the Sun in the 11th house bring help from powerful people?

That's the oldest reading of it. Firmicus Maternus wrote that natives with this placement hold high position and that their honours come 'through the goodwill of friends,' especially when Jupiter or Venus are involved. The 1928 printing of Alan Leo's How to Judge a Nativity says it brings 'the good-will of elders, superiors, masters,' even from people who aren't close friends. Modern astrologers translate that as patrons, mentors and the right group at the right time.

Is a Sun in the 11th house more common among cesarean births?

In our model of 2024 U.S. births, yes: 39% of babies with the Sun in the 11th were cesareans with no trial of labor, against 23% of all births, because those deliveries cluster in the morning. Most 11th-house Suns were still born another way, and the house says nothing about how a particular birth went.

Does the Sun in the 11th house make you the leader of every group you join?

Howard Sasportas wrote that the Sun here 'may have to be the leader,' drawing a good part of its identity from groups. That describes a pull, not a job title. Some people with the placement lead, some organise from the side, and some keep looking for a group that fits before they take any role in it. What they share is that belonging to something larger than themselves matters to how they see themselves.
