North Node in the 5th House: Children, Romance or Your Own Creative Work?

A birth chart wheel with the line of the lunar nodes running across it, the North Node in the terracotta 5th-house sector and the South Node opposite in the 11th

The 5th is the house of children, romance, play and the things you make, and the North Node marks the direction a chart asks you to grow in. So which one does a 5th-house node point at: a family, a love life, or work with your own name on it? It can be any of them. On children, the placement doesn't decide the question, and the old texts that mention it contradict each other.

The other common worry is about friends. The South Node always sits opposite, in the 11th house of friends and groups, and some people with bad luck in friendship read the axis as a sign they're meant to be alone. Neither of the old rules for this end of the axis says that.

Quick answer

A 5th-house North Node points toward what you make and enjoy for its own sake: creative work, romance, play and, for some people, children. It doesn't forecast whether you'll have children. The one old verse that says "childless" sets no conditions, and Lilly counted the Dragon's Head among the fruitful points.

Does a North Node in the 5th house mean no children?

No. The claim traces back to one verse. Of the major Vedic classics, the Phaladeepika is the one that gives Rahu, the Vedic name for the North Node, a line in every house, and for the 5th it says: "If at a person's birth Rahu should be posited in the 5th house, he will talk through the nose, will be childless, will be hard-hearted and suffer from belly-ache" (VIII.26, V. Subrahmanya Sastri's 1950 translation, pp. 94–95). The verse sets no conditions, and "childless" sits in the list next to a nasal voice. The bigger classic, the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, has no house-by-house chapter for Rahu, and where it does put Rahu in the 5th, conditions stack up. In its chapter on obstacles to offspring, one of eight combinations for "no male issue" is Rahu in the 5th aspected by Mars (ch. 83 vv. 9–16, R. Santhanam's translation); another verse needs Rahu in the 5th, the 5th lord with a malefic and a debilitated Jupiter all at once (16.21). Vedic astrology also counts Rahu as a malefic, which most Western astrologers don't do with the North Node, and that split is old: al-Biruni wrote in 1029 that "according to the Hindus" the ascending node is "in general maleficent" (Book of Instruction §384, Wright's translation).

William Lilly, the English astrologer, took the opposite line. In Christian Astrology (1647) he names Jupiter and Venus as the "Fruitfull or Prolificall Planets" and adds that "some do adde hereunto" the Dragon's Head, the old name for the North Node, as "being of the nature of Jupiter and Venus" (p. 565). In his chapter on children he lists the Head again among the points that "signifie Issue" (p. 602). So one old source says childless and another says fruitful. They read the same point in opposite directions.

Our own model can't settle it either. It spreads 400,000 simulated U.S. births from 1960 to 2024 across U.S. counties using CDC birth-time data, and it shows the North Node landing in the 5th about one time in twelve, but it holds no record of who has children. The reasons people give for not having kids are ordinary ones. In a 2024 Pew survey of U.S. adults under 50 without children who say they're unlikely ever to have them, 57% said a major reason is that they just don't want to. And the modern karmic reading puts children at the center of this placement, not outside it. Martin Schulman wrote that "major turning points in the current life revolve around children, through whose eyes the individual comes to understand his own sense of self-worth" (Karmic Astrology Vol. 1, 1975, pp. 73–76). You might apply that to parenting, to teaching, or to time with younger relatives.

Children, romance or art: what the 5th asks of the node

Start with whichever matters to you. The 5th covers what you do for the pleasure of it: a hobby, a crush, a song written for nobody in particular. Schulman's one-line summary is that "the individual is learning about the Creative Process," and he adds, a little against the grain of a house about play, that "he would do well to spend much of his time learning self-discipline." Take that loosely. Practice lets the fun go further, but a song you only ever play for yourself still counts as 5th-house living.

Picture someone who runs the group chat, books the restaurant and remembers everyone's birthday, and hasn't shown anyone their drawings in ten years. The South Node in the 11th makes them good at the group's plans. The North Node in the 5th keeps asking when they'll put their own name on something, and the fear of being judged is part of why they haven't. They don't have to leave the group to answer it. The same organizing skill can carry a project of their own, like a group show they set up or a band they start.

Leo is the 5th house's natural sign, so some writers treat a 5th-house node and a Leo node as one placement. They aren't. The birth date usually settles the sign (the North Node calculator finds it from a birthday), while the house needs the birth time, and Schulman himself read the house as the arena and the sign as the manner, which matches our guide to the North Node's sign and house. If your node happens to be in Leo as well, read the meaning of a North Node in Leo for that half.

Why another app may call it the 6th house

Switching from Placidus to whole sign can move your North Node from the 5th house to the 6th. In our model, a node in the Placidus 5th stays in the 5th on a whole-sign chart only 45% of the time. In 48% of modeled births it moves one house later, into the 6th; in 6% it moves back to the 4th, and in about 1% it lands two houses away. Neither chart is broken. Placidus divides the sky by time, while whole sign simply counts signs from the rising sign, so the two answer slightly different questions.

The birth time matters even inside one system. The houses turn under the node about once a day. If the time on your birth record is 30 minutes off, the node's Placidus house changes in about 1 in 4 modeled births, and an hour off changes it in about half. A date one day off, at the right clock time, changes it in only about 3%, because the node itself barely moves in a day. So check how your birth time was recorded before you lean on the house.

With the North Node in the 5th, the Sun is in the 5th too in 7.9% of births, against 9.1% across all houses and about 10% to 12% for every house above the horizon. This reflects when U.S. babies are born. A 5th-house Sun means a birth in the middle of the evening, as the Sun's own 5th-house page explains, while the Sun crosses houses 7 to 12 in daylight, when U.S. births are busiest.

The South Node in the 11th house: life by committee

Schulman wrote of this end of the axis that "in past incarnations he lived for the fulfillment of wishes." In plainer terms, you're good at wanting what the group wants. The 11th is friends, groups, causes and what the old books called hopes and wishes, and on this axis it's read as the place you already know too well.

That's where the worry about bad luck with friends belongs. The medieval rule for the Tail, Guido Bonatti's 139th Consideration, reads the South Node in the 11th as "loss by his Friends, or for their sakes" (Coley's translation, 1886 reprint, p. 61). The Phaladeepika reads Ketu, the Vedic South Node, in the 11th the other way, as someone who "will be successful in obtaining all his requirements" (VIII.33). What neither says is that you'll be alone. A modern reading would put it like this: friendship comes easily to you and can swallow your own plans, and the fix is to bring something of yours to the group instead of leaving it.

People with the node the other way round, in the 11th, ask a different question: which friends can they trust? Lilly's friends table for an 11th-house node answers it by sign.

Why only Picasso, Whitney Houston and George Carlin made the list

Each chart below puts the node in the 5th under every check we ran: Placidus or whole sign, true or mean node, and the birth time a quarter hour early or late.

  • Pablo Picasso (Astro-Databank AA, birth certificate quoted), born 11:15 p.m., October 25, 1881, Málaga, Spain: North Node at 9°24′ Sagittarius in the 5th.
  • Whitney Houston (AA), born 8:55 p.m., August 9, 1963, Newark, New Jersey: North Node at 20°11′ Cancer in the 5th.
  • George Carlin (A, the time he remembered from having his chart done), born 11:45 a.m., May 12, 1937, Manhattan: North Node at 15°13′ Sagittarius in the 5th.

They were the only three charts in our pool of 261 rated births that passed every test for the 5th. The list confirms where the node sits and says nothing about their work. Bill Murray and Lou Reed show up as 5th-house nodes with the birth times that circulate online, but Astro-Databank rates both X, meaning no reliable time, so we left them out.

Is a 5th-house North Node about past-life karma?

The karma language is newer than it sounds. The medieval house rules were about the Dragon's Tail, the South Node, and they talked about loss, not past lives. Reading the North Node house by house as a life direction comes from 20th-century karmic astrology, mainly Schulman's 1975 book. He gives this axis big words: through the 5th-house node, he says, the person receives "the greatest gift that man can receive," which he names as "the power to create his own destiny."

In a Pew survey fielded in December 2017, 33% of U.S. adults said they believe in reincarnation. We can't confirm a past life, and nobody else can either. But you don't need one to use the axis. Try it as a question instead: what have you wanted to make or try for years and still not started?

Love affairs, and whether the node names a soulmate

Many readers want to know whether the North Node points to a soulmate. Your natal node doesn't name anyone. What the 5th-house version describes is how you grow through romance: by saying what you want, flirting badly, taking the risk of a first date with someone outside your usual circle. The 11th-house South Node would rather wait and let things happen in the group, safely, which can mean watching a crush turn into a friendship because asking felt riskier.

The soulmate idea comes from synastry, the comparison of two charts. When another person's Sun, Moon or Venus lands on your North Node, astrologers read a strong pull toward growth together, and that takes both charts, not one. The 5th describes romance and the 7th describes committed partnership, so a 5th-house node can say a lot about how you date and very little about who you'll end up with. Read the 5th house's place among the twelve and you'll see why: it's the house of the love affair, not the marriage.

When the moving North Node crosses a 5th house

A transit through your 5th house can come whatever house your natal node is in. The moving node drifts backward through the zodiac and, in whole-sign houses, spends about a year and a half in each one. Astrologers read its time in the 5th as a season that leans toward creative work, dating and children.

Transit note, October 2026

The transiting North Node has been in Aquarius since July 26, 2026 and moves on into Capricorn on March 26, 2028 (US Eastern dates). In whole-sign houses that puts it in the 5th house for Libra risings, with the South Node in their 11th. From March 26, 2028 the same transit passes to Virgo risings. Each rising sign gets about a year and a half of this once every 18.6 years. It is a passing transit, not the birth placement this page is about.

FAQ

Does a North Node in the 5th house mean I won't have children?

No. The idea comes from one verse in the Phaladeepika, which lists 'childless' for Rahu in the 5th with no conditions at all, next to a nasal voice and belly-ache. The larger Vedic classic, the Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra, only ties Rahu in the 5th to trouble with children when other conditions are met, such as an aspect from Mars. William Lilly went the other way and counted the Dragon's Head among the 'Fruitfull' points. Our birth model counts where the node falls, not who has a family, so it can't test the verse either way.

Is a 5th-house North Node a sign of past-life karma?

That's how 20th-century karmic astrology reads every node placement, and Martin Schulman's 1975 book is the main source for the house-by-house version. He wrote that people with this axis 'lived for the fulfillment of wishes' in past lives, which is the 11th house's theme. Nobody can check a past life, so a more usable reading keeps it in this one: the South Node in the 11th is the group habit you fall back on, and the North Node in the 5th is the personal work you keep putting off. The older astrologers, Lilly and Bonatti, read the nodes in houses without any talk of past lives.

I'm a working musician with a North Node in the 5th house. What does it say about my career?

Less than you might hope about the business side. Career belongs to the 10th house, and the 5th is the house of making things for the pleasure of it, so this placement speaks to the music you write and play as yourself. Schulman wrote that the individual 'is learning about the Creative Process' and would do well to learn self-discipline. With the South Node in the 11th, the familiar role is a group one, such as session work or a band where someone else picks the songs, and the reading favors putting your own name on some of the work. It can't tell you whether a music career will pay.

I have bad luck with friends and a North Node in the 5th house. Am I meant to be alone?

No. The old rule closest to that worry, Guido Bonatti's, speaks of loss through friends, not of a life without them. The South Node in the 11th is read as the place you already know well, groups and friendships, and some people with it feel let down by friends or tired of fitting in. The North Node in the 5th points you toward what you love doing, and a class, a band or a team built around that is a common place to meet new friends. This placement isn't a reason to stop looking for them.
