Pluto in the 11th House: Friendship, Trust, Groups and Why Some Endings Hit So Hard
Modern astrologers link Pluto in the 11th house with intense friendships, power struggles in groups and hopes for the future that keep changing shape. The questions people post about it are mostly about a friendship that ended badly, or a group they never quite fit into. A house placement can't tell you why a particular friendship ended, but it can describe how much friendships weigh. Intense isn't doomed, though. No author we read says your friends will betray you, and the same books describe close, long friendships and real influence in groups.
This page is about Pluto in your birth chart. If Pluto is moving through your 11th house in the sky, that's a transit; it has its own section below.
Quick answer
Pluto in the 11th house puts Pluto's intensity into friendships, groups, causes and long-range hopes. Astrologers read a strong need to belong alongside a habit of watching from the edge, few but deep friendships, and endings that hit hard. It doesn't mean friends will betray you. The house depends on your birth time.
| Pluto house | 11th: friends, groups, networks, causes, hopes for the future |
| Natural sign of the house | Aquarius |
| The fear, answered | Betrayal is one possibility in the books, not a forecast |
| Our data point | In our model of 400,000 simulated U.S. births (1940 to 2024, CDC birth-time data), Pluto's real position in the sky was in the same house as its zodiac degree in 98.2% of 11th-house Plutos, more than any other house |
| How old the reading is | Pluto was found in 1930; the earliest readings tied it to groups |
An 11th-house Pluto on a chart with the wrong birth time can easily be a 10th or a 12th. In our model of 400,000 simulated U.S. births from 1940 to 2024, built on CDC birth-time data, moving the clock 30 minutes one way put Pluto in a different house about a quarter of the time (25.1%). Getting the date wrong by a day, with the clock right, did it only 3.3% of the time.

The modern books don't describe a life of betrayal. What they describe is friendships that carry too much weight. Howard Sasportas, writing about Pluto among friends in The Twelve Houses, says Pluto "suggests intense and complicated associations which significantly transform us or in which issues of betrayal, intrigue and treachery come into play" (p. 97). Betrayal is in that sentence as a possibility, beside friendships that change us for the better. He doesn't predict it for everyone with this placement.
Robert Hand is narrower still. In Horoscope Symbols (1981) he writes that "If Pluto is in the eleventh and aspected so as to indicate the danger of power struggles, then it, too, can signify disruptions in one's group contacts." That's a condition, an "if", not a rule for everyone with this placement.
So why do the endings feel so big? Because when a friendship holds a lot of you (your secrets, your plans, a version of who you'll be), losing it takes more than a person. You lose a piece of the future. If one friend is your main source of support, losing that friendship can also knock out your plans, your routines and your picture of the next few years.
Needing the group, or watching it from the edge
With Pluto in the 11th house, the two main authors pull in opposite directions, and both may be right about you at different times. Stephen Arroyo, in Astrology, Karma & Transformation (2nd edition, 1992), describes "a compulsion to be accepted by other people and as a need to achieve certain objectives that are consciously not very clear." That's the person who badly wants in. Jeff Green, in Pluto: The Evolutionary Journey of the Soul (1985), describes the opposite: "It is as if they have learned to stand on the sidelines of human activity, viewing themselves and others from afar" (p. 199).
The two descriptions can overlap, and neither tells you whether you'll end up leading the group or leaving it. Arroyo adds a second warning that's easy to miss: "The emphasis upon the future sometimes takes such precedence with these people that the present is neglected." Plans for the group, the cause or the friendship can crowd out the friendship itself. His advice: people with Pluto here "should learn to rely upon themselves, rather than upon others, for their fulfillment." Friends still matter in that reading. They just stop carrying the whole job of making you feel you belong.

If you have one or two close friends and wonder whether that's a Pluto problem, the national numbers may help. A Pew Research Center survey published in 2023 found that 53% of U.S. adults have one to four close friends and 8% have none, and 61% said close friends are extremely or very important to a fulfilling life, more than said the same of marriage or children. Loneliness is common too: in Gallup's 2024 data, 20% of U.S. adults reported feeling lonely "a lot of the day yesterday".
These surveys don't record anyone's birth chart; they describe the country as a whole. A small circle is ordinary. What a Pluto in the 11th adds, in the astrologers' reading, is how much each friendship weighs, not how many you get. If loneliness is wearing you down, that's worth talking to someone about, with or without a birth chart.
Groups and causes: the first Pluto reading was about this house
Clyde Tombaugh found Pluto at Lowell Observatory in Flagstaff, Arizona, on February 18, 1930, so every reading of Pluto in a house is modern. The earliest American reading we found is a good fit for the 11th. In Beginner's Horoscope Maker and Reader (1941), Elbert Benjamine wrote that "Aspects to Pluto affect the life through groups, through subtle force, or through coercion or co-operation." In that early reading, the keyword for Pluto itself was groups and what they do to people, which is the 11th house's own territory.
Arroyo carries that into the future-facing side of the house. Real fulfillment, he says, comes "only if it encompasses an entire transformation and clarification of their own creative purpose within the framework of social needs." Arroyo links fulfillment here to a purpose that serves other people: a cause, a movement, a club you help run. The harder side in modern readings is control: wanting a group to run your way, keeping score of who stays loyal, or holding an ideal so tightly that friends who disagree start to look like opponents. Two examples, chosen after we checked their charts:
- Denzel Washington, actor (birth record quoted at Astro-Databank, Rodden AA): born 12:09 a.m., December 28, 1954, Mount Vernon, New York. Pluto at 26°36′ Leo in the 11th. He grew up in the Boys & Girls Club of Mount Vernon, credits it as a steadying influence, and has been a longtime national spokesman for Boys & Girls Clubs of America.
- Nicole Kidman, actress (time from memory, Astro-Databank rating A): born 3:15 p.m., June 20, 1967, Honolulu, Hawaii. Pluto at 18°06′ Virgo in the 11th. In 2006 she became a Goodwill Ambassador for what is now UN Women, with a focus on ending violence against women.
Houses here are Placidus, and whole-sign houses agree. In both charts Pluto sits at least 9 degrees inside the 11th and stays there if the birth time is off by 30 minutes either way. We chose these facts after seeing the house, and one chart proves nothing.
Where Pluto's chart position and its sky position agree most
Pluto's orbit is tilted about 17 degrees, far more than any planet's, so Pluto itself can sit well north or south of the Sun's path. Charts, ours included, place it in a house by its zodiac degree, the usual method. Near the horizon that can put the printed house and Pluto's real position in different houses. High in the chart it barely matters. In our model of 400,000 simulated U.S. births from 1940 to 2024, built on CDC birth-time data, Pluto's real position agreed with its zodiac-degree house in 98.2% of 11th-house Plutos, more often than in any other house.
Whole-sign houses are another matter. In the same model, about 2 in 3 Placidus 11th-house Plutos (67.9%) fall in the whole-sign 12th, so if one site shows your Pluto in the 11th and another in the 12th, the house system is the likely reason. Our charts use Placidus. And an 11th-house Pluto was almost never in an intercepted sign, a sign with no house cusp in it, in the model: 0.5%.
The generation shifts the odds too. Pluto's sign is shared by everyone born over a stretch of 12 to 33 years, and in the same model the Leo-Pluto generation (born about 1939 to 1956) had Pluto in the 11th in 9.9% of charts, Virgo (about 1956 to 1971) in 8.9%, Libra (about 1971 to 1983) in 8.0%, Scorpio (about 1983 to 1995) in 7.0%, and the Sagittarius and Capricorn generations (about 1995 to 2024) in about 6.5%. Northern Leo degrees spend more of the day above the horizon at U.S. latitudes, where the 11th sits. In whole-sign houses the 11th holds Pluto in Leo for Libra risings, Virgo for Scorpio, Libra for Sagittarius, Scorpio for Capricorn, Sagittarius for Aquarius and Capricorn for Pisces risings.
When Pluto passes through the 11th house in the sky
A transit is the moving Pluto crossing a house of your chart, and it's a separate thing from your birth placement. Pluto entered Aquarius for good on November 19, 2024 and reaches Pisces on March 8, 2043 (US Eastern dates), so for that whole stay Aries rising charts have it in the whole-sign 11th.
Transit note, October 2026
Pluto has been in Aquarius since November 19, 2024 and moves into Pisces on March 8, 2043 (US Eastern dates). In whole-sign houses that puts transiting Pluto in the 11th house for Aries risings for the whole stay, and when it reaches Pisces the same transit passes to Taurus risings. It stations direct on October 15, 2026 at 3°04′ Aquarius, and its next retrograde begins on May 8, 2027. Pluto covers only about 1.6 degrees of Aquarius a year, so on a Placidus chart the years depend on where your own house cusps fall. This is a transit lasting years, not the birth placement this page is about.
The house opposite the 11th is the 5th, where the same intensity goes into romance, children and creative work, and the 5th-house end of this axis has its own page. For what the 11th means with any planet in it, our walk through all twelve houses puts it in context.

FAQ
Does Pluto in the 11th house mean friends will betray you?
Pluto in the 11th house doesn't mean friends will betray you. Howard Sasportas lists betrayal as one possibility among intense friendships, next to ones that "significantly transform us" (The Twelve Houses, p. 97). Robert Hand ties disrupted group contacts to Pluto being "aspected so as to indicate the danger of power struggles", a condition, not a rule. What the books share is depth: friendships that matter a great deal, for better or worse. If a friendship hurt you, start with what actually happened. The placement can't tell you who was responsible.
With Pluto in the 11th house, are you the outsider in groups or the one who leads them?
With Pluto in the 11th house you may find both in yourself, because the authors disagree. Stephen Arroyo describes "a compulsion to be accepted by other people", which pulls you toward the group. Jeff Green describes people who "have learned to stand on the sidelines of human activity, viewing themselves and others from afar". Someone who watches a group that closely often ends up shaping it, which is how the outsider and the leader can be the same person at different ages.
What does it mean when someone else's Pluto falls in your 11th house?
Someone else's Pluto in your 11th house is synastry, a comparison of two birth charts, and it's a different question from your own 11th-house Pluto. Astrologers read the overlay as a person who changes your friendships, your circle or your plans for the future, sometimes by pulling you into a group, sometimes by pulling you out of one. It needs your accurate birth time, because your houses are the frame. Your own 11th-house Pluto doesn't name anyone; it describes how you relate to groups in general.
How long does transiting Pluto stay in the 11th house?
Transiting Pluto stays in the 11th house for years, longer than almost any other transit. In whole-sign houses it stays for Pluto's whole visit to one sign: for Aries risings, that's Pluto's Aquarius stay, from November 19, 2024 to March 8, 2043, with a last step back into Aquarius from August 31, 2043 to January 18, 2044. In Placidus houses it depends on the size of your own 11th house. Pluto covers only about 1.6 degrees of Aquarius a year, so a 20-degree house takes about 12 years and a 40-degree house about 25.
