Pet Astrology: The Best Sites for Your Dog or Cat's Zodiac Sign, and How to Get the Birthday Right

Pet astrology starts with your dog or cat's birthday. The birthday falls in a zodiac sign, and the sign comes with a personality read you can hold up against the animal asleep on your feet. It's a fun thing to know, it makes a good gotcha-day present, and a handful of sites and apps now do it well.

Here's how to find your pet's sign, which pet astrology sites to use, and how to work with an estimated birthday. For that last part we also calculated how often an estimated birthday gives a different Sun sign, since ZodiScope makes birth charts and had the tools to hand.

How to find your pet's zodiac sign

Take the birth date and read it off the same table you'd use for a person. The dates in the sign table below are the usual ones. The one wrinkle is that the boundaries shift by a day depending on the year, because the Sun doesn't enter each sign at the same moment every time round. If your pet was born between the 18th and the 23rd of a month, the year matters, and the Furscopes pet zodiac calculator handles it for you: enter the month and day and it shows the real boundary for every year from 2010 to 2027, with both candidates on a boundary day.

If you know the time and place as well, which usually means a breeder's litter or one born at home, a full chart is possible: Moon sign, rising sign and houses. You can enter a pet's details in a birth chart calculator, since the maths is the same for anyone born on Earth.

No birthday at all? You have two good options. Use the gotcha day, which a lot of owners do and which makes for a nice tradition, or take the shelter's age estimate, count back from the intake date, and treat the result as an approximate birthday. Nobody paid for a place here and none of these are affiliate links. We ranked them on how they handle birth details and how well the writing captures the pets we know.

1. Furscopes

The best written of the pet astrology sites, and the one that treats the birthday most carefully. The free calculator asks for month and day, lists the sign boundaries by year, and has a personality quiz for pets whose birthday you don't know. The dog zodiac signs and cat zodiac signs guides pair each sign with a breed, drawing on the AKC and CFA breed standards. The Cosmic Profile and Reading costs $9.99 and uses the planet positions on your pet's birthday. You can read it straight after payment with no account, and if you change your mind you have 14 days to ask for a refund. It covers their nature, their days, the year ahead and how the two of you fit. If you buy one pet reading, buy this one.

2. AstroAnimal

AstroAnimal is an iOS and Android app from a small London company, and the one to pick if you have a real birth time and want a full chart. It builds a chart for your pet and one for you, then reads the two together. In-app purchases are $3.99 and $24.99, and the app was updated in July 2026.

3. Pawsigns

Pawsigns is another small app, iOS and Android, with a good idea at its centre: a rescue assessment that uses age and adoption details to suggest a birth range, then asks questions to build a zodiac profile when there's no birthday to go on. It takes a time and place when you have them, covers 169 dog and 72 cat breeds, and runs from $3.99 a month or $4.99 for a one-off birth chart. The Android app was updated in April 2026, the iOS one in April 2025.

4. PawCalculator's pet horoscope

PawCalculator is a general pet calculator site, and its free pet horoscope runs in the browser with no account. It has separate descriptions for dogs and cats and explains how the reading works. Another free option for a sign and a short profile.

5. Cosmic Pet Club

Bruna Fabregat, a New York astrologer, prepares each Cosmic Pet Club reading personally. Her pet astrology reading is $170 per pet, delivered as a PDF and a recorded audio message within five business days, with 5% of every order going to rescue organisations. She works with whatever birth details you have, including none. An option if you'd like an astrologer to prepare a reading for your pet.

How sure can you be when the birthday is an estimate?

If your pet's birthday is an estimate, how much could its sign change? A shelter birthday is usually a vet's estimate from teeth, eyes and weight, and for adult animals it can be loose: a 2015 study of 295 dogs tested an age estimate built from eye and dental measurements and found a standard error of about 2.3 years. So we calculated what happens when the possible birthdays are a few days or weeks apart.

We took every calendar day from 2015 to 2026, found the Sun sign at noon UTC, and compared it with the sign on every day inside a window of ±N days, treating each day in the window as equally likely. The share of comparisons that land in a different sign is the average risk under that model. Your own pet's risk depends on how close its possible birthdays sit to a boundary.

Computed 13 September 2026 with the pyephem ephemeris library over 4,383 days. The rate barely varies by sign, from 23.0% for Cancer to 24.9% for Capricorn at ±14 days, because every sign is between 29.5 and 31.5 days long.

In our model, about three quarters of comparisons inside a two-week window kept the same sign. For your own pet, check every sign the possible birthday range covers. A short range often stays inside one sign, which gives you a clear answer. If it crosses into the next sign, read both and see which sounds more like your pet. If you only know a rescue's age in years, the gotcha day gives you a sign to read and an anniversary to celebrate.

Why so many pets are spring and summer signs

Cats breed by day length, and a study of 5,414 cats spayed at an RSPCA clinic in Manchester, published in the Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery in 2016, found the pregnancy rate peaked in April and bottomed out in November and December, 13.9% in spring against 3.8% in winter. US shelter data shows the same season from the other end: kitten intakes climb from February and peak in May. Dogs lean the same way. A 2018 paper in Scientific Reports plotted the birth months of 129,778 US dogs from the Orthopedic Foundation for Animals registry and found a May peak, with March to July the busy months.

These UK and US records show seasonal patterns in cat reproduction and dog births. They give a clue that Taurus, Gemini, Cancer and Leo are busier pet signs than Capricorn or Aquarius, though they don't count pets by sign, and one UK assistance-dog colony found no regular seasonal pattern.

What a birth time adds

A date gives you the Sun sign, and on most days the Mercury, Venus and Mars signs as well, since those planets spend weeks in each sign. The Moon is quicker. It changes sign roughly every two to three days, which means it changes sign partway through a lot of days: across the UTC days from 2010 to 2026 it moved signs during 44% of them. On those days a birth time settles which Moon sign the pet has, and without one you have two to choose from. For the rising sign you need the birth time and place, since it changes roughly every two hours.

With a known birthday you can usually find the Sun and the slower planets. A recorded time and place let you add the Moon, the rising sign and the houses. A short history, for the curious

Astrology for animals is older than it looks. Lorenzo Rusio's Hippiatria, a horse-care manual written in Rome in the early 1300s and printed in Paris in 1532, maps the zodiac onto the horse's body the way physicians mapped it onto people, with Taurus governing the shoulders. Modern examples include Stella Andromeda's Dog Astrology and Cat Astrology from Hardie Grant in 2021, and in a 2023 OnePoll survey of 2,000 US pet owners, 28% of respondents felt their pet's personality matched its sign.
