Pluto in the 7th House: Hope for Marriage, Power Struggles, and What the Astrologers Said

Does Pluto in the 7th house mean a marriage won't last? On Reddit, the threads about this placement are full of people asking whether they're doomed in love. They aren't. Stephen Arroyo and Howard Sasportas, two of the modern astrologers who wrote about it in detail, both describe marriages that go through big changes and still last. What they warn about is power, who has it and who's afraid of losing it, more than any fixed ending.

Everything below is about the Pluto you were born with. The moving Pluto that later passes through your 7th house is a transit, a different reading, and the section near the end covers it.

Quick answer

Pluto in the 7th house means Pluto sat in the house of marriage and committed partners when you were born. Modern astrologers read it as relationships that change you deeply and bring questions of control to the surface. It doesn't mean divorce or a doomed marriage, and it can't tell you whether a marriage will last.

First check that your Pluto really is in the 7th. In our model of 400,000 simulated U.S. births from 1940 to 2024, built on CDC birth-time data, a birth time 15 minutes off moved Pluto into another house about 1 time in 8, and an hour off did it about half the time. A wrong date mattered far less, because Pluto barely moves in a day.

Is there any hope for marriage with Pluto in the 7th house?

Yes, there is hope for marriage with Pluto in the 7th house. Stephen Arroyo, who covers Pluto house by house in Astrology, Karma & Transformation, calls marriage and close relationships "the dominant field within which his own personal transformation can take place." He's frank about the cost, "Often there are compulsive and painful emotional problems with close relationships," and he puts a condition on the good outcome: "With this position of Pluto, a marriage can be long-lasting, but only if the person accepts the personal changes required to make it work" (2nd edition, 1992, ch. 4).

Howard Sasportas, in The Twelve Houses, describes relationships that survive repeated crises. Pluto in the 7th, he wrote, "suggests that a relationship can endure a number of mini-deaths and rebirths, coming up stronger each time, and lasting many, many years" (p. 250). His advice is to stop expecting a "'happily ever after' affair" and to treat a partnership as a place where both people change (p. 249).

Both men allow for long marriages. Neither tells you how many crises to expect, or whether a particular relationship is worth keeping, and a hard patch isn't proof of anything about your chart. Every word of it is modern: Pluto was only discovered in 1930, so there's no older doctrine behind any 7th-house Pluto reading, Western or Vedic.

The divorce question, with real numbers

Liz Greene gives the clearest version of the divorce claim. In The Astrology of Fate (1984) she listed what she had seen in clients with this placement, and "Divorce is common" heads the list, along with love triangles and power battles (p. 54). That's an experienced astrologer's impression from her own practice. It isn't a count, and we found no published one.

For scale, the CDC's provisional figures for 2023 give a U.S. divorce rate of 2.4 per 1,000 people, from 45 reporting states and D.C. (CDC FastStats). Nobody has broken that down by Pluto's house, and our birth model can't: it counts how often placements occur, not what happens to marriages. And a population rate can't tell you the odds for one marriage anyway.

So the passages give no divorce rate for this placement. Greene saw divorce often in her clients; Arroyo and Sasportas describe long marriages. None of them can tell you whether yours will last.

Who holds the power: you, or the person you chose?

The other big fear with a 7th-house Pluto is a controlling partner. The modern writers turn that around. Greene described clients who experienced the partner as "vicious, violent, treacherous," and then added: "Naturally it is not really the other who is all these things, but rather, a deity, a primeval power in life which one perceives via the other" (p. 55). In her reading, the partner is the face of a larger force the person meets, not its source.

Sasportas makes the same point from the other side. Afraid of losing the relationship, people with this placement "may try to dominate, possess and control the partner," and "such behaviour often serves to drive the other person away, thereby bringing about the situation which they most dreaded" (p. 249). In his reading, "the issue of who has the power in the relationship is brought sharply into focus" (p. 250). So the honest question has two halves: "will I attract control?" and "where do I hold on too tight?"

None of this is a reason to stay in a harmful relationship. A birth chart doesn't explain abuse or excuse it. If you're unsafe, the National Domestic Violence Hotline (1-800-799-7233) is the place to start, not an astrology page.

Your own 7th-house Pluto, or a partner's Pluto in your chart?

Your natal Pluto in the 7th is about how you do partnership, with anyone. A partner's Pluto falling in your 7th house is synastry, a comparison of two birth charts, and it describes that one bond: astrologers read it as a relationship that feels fated and pulls power struggles into the open. Synastry needs your accurate birth time and place, because your houses are the frame, while the other person's Pluto needs only a birth date unless it lands near one of your cusps. Your own placement never names a particular partner. How to read a synastry chart for free walks through the overlay.

One 7th-house Pluto in five sits in an intercepted sign

Placidus houses, the system we use, come in different sizes at U.S. latitudes. When a house is wide enough to hold a whole sign with no cusp in it, that sign is called intercepted. In our model of 400,000 simulated U.S. births from 1940 to 2024, built on CDC birth-time data, about 1 in 5 seventh-house Plutos (19.0%) sat in an intercepted sign. It doesn't change the house. It only means the sign Pluto is in has no house of its own starting in it.

The 7th also shifts in a particular direction between house systems. In the same model, a Placidus 7th-house Pluto was never in the whole-sign 6th. In 53.2% of the modeled births it moved forward to the whole-sign 8th, and in 4.7% it moved two houses. If one app calls your Pluto 7th and another calls it 8th, both can be following their own rules, and our explainer on how the twelve houses work shows where those systems part ways.

Once you know the house, three things change the reading most. The first is how close Pluto sits to the Descendant, the cusp that opens the 7th: astrologers give a Pluto within a few degrees of it far more weight than one near the far end of the house. The second is Pluto's aspects to your personal planets, above all Venus and the Moon; a Venus square Pluto colors relationships more than the house alone does. The third is the sign on the 7th cusp and where its ruling planet sits. A 7th-house Pluto with no close aspects and a long way from the Descendant is a much quieter thing.

Older generations got it more often

Pluto stays in one sign for many years, so you share your Pluto sign with a broad age group, unless you were born near a sign change. The house is personal. But the sign still tilts the odds, because the 7th is above the horizon and some signs spend more of the day up there than others at U.S. latitudes. In our model of 400,000 simulated U.S. births from 1940 to 2024, built on CDC birth-time data, this is how often each generation got a 7th-house Pluto:

Pluto signBorn aboutModeled charts with Pluto in the 7th
Leo1939 to 19569.3%
Virgo1956 to 19718.7%
Libra1971 to 19837.7%
Scorpio1983 to 19957.3%
Sagittarius1995 to 20086.9%
Capricorn2008 to 20246.8%

The switch years went back and forth, so anyone born in 1956 to 1958, 1971 or 1972, 1983 or 1984, 1995, 2008 or 2023 to 2024 should check their own chart. The pattern is geometry: Leo degrees sit north of the celestial equator and stay above the horizon longer, Sagittarius and Capricorn degrees sit south and spend less time there.

Sartre, Beauvoir and two other well-timed charts

Each chart below comes from a birth record rated AA by Astro-Databank, computed by us on Placidus houses. In each, Pluto sits at least 7 degrees inside the 7th and stays there with the birth time moved 30 minutes either way.

  • Jean-Paul Sartre, philosopher: born 6:45 p.m. Paris time, June 21, 1905, Paris. Pluto at 21°25′ Gemini in the 7th.
  • Simone de Beauvoir, philosopher and writer: born 4:30 a.m. Paris time, January 9, 1908, Paris. Pluto at 23°21′ Gemini in the 7th. She and Sartre were companions from 1929 until his death in 1980, in an open relationship that lasted half a century.
  • Billie Jean King, tennis champion: born 11:45 a.m., November 22, 1943, Long Beach, California. Pluto at 8°43′ Leo in the 7th on Placidus houses (the whole-sign 8th). She beat Bobby Riggs in straight sets in the 1973 "Battle of the Sexes" at the Houston Astrodome.
  • Barack Obama, 44th U.S. president: born 7:24 p.m., August 4, 1961, Honolulu. Pluto at 6°59′ Virgo in the 7th on Placidus houses (the whole-sign 8th). He met Michelle Robinson at a Chicago law firm where she was assigned as his mentor, and they married in 1992.

Sartre and Beauvoir both had Pluto in Gemini and in the 7th. Their close birth dates explain the shared sign; their birth times explain the shared house, and that part is a coincidence, not proof. King's chart fits the 7th house's old meaning of the open rival, the opponent you face in plain sight, and it's a reminder that the house is about every one-to-one bond, not only marriage. Jeff Green, in Pluto: The Evolutionary Journey of the Soul, read the placement as a long education in "lessons of equality, relativity, and of listening" (vol. 1, p. 131), a useful counterweight to all the talk of power. Elbert Benjamine's 1941 reading, the oldest list we found, is wider still: "association with groups is shown" (p. 151).

The other end, and Pluto's Aquarius years for Leo risings

The 7th faces the 1st across the chart: the 1st is about the self, the 7th about partners and open opponents. Pluto in the 1st house and the intimidating first impression covers the self side of the same axis.

The transit is separate again. Pluto entered Aquarius for good on November 19, 2024, and stays until it first reaches Pisces on March 8, 2043 (US Eastern dates). In whole-sign houses, that whole stay crosses the 7th house of everyone with Leo rising, a long run of partnership change that the Leo rising guide also tracks. It's a transit lasting years, not the birth placement this page is about.

Transit note, October 2026

Pluto has been in Aquarius since November 19, 2024 and moves into Pisces on March 8, 2043 (US Eastern dates). In whole-sign houses that puts transiting Pluto in the 7th house for Leo risings for the whole stay, and when it reaches Pisces the same transit passes to Virgo risings. It stations direct on October 15, 2026 at 3°04′ Aquarius, and its next retrograde begins on May 8, 2027. Pluto covers only about 1.6 degrees of Aquarius a year, so on a Placidus chart the years depend on where your own house cusps fall. This is a transit lasting years, not the birth placement this page is about.

FAQ

Does Pluto in the 7th house mean divorce?

Pluto in the 7th house doesn't mean divorce: no placement decides whether a marriage lasts, and we found no study linking Pluto's house to divorce. Liz Greene listed divorce among the experiences she saw in clients with this placement, but that was her impression from practice, not a count. Stephen Arroyo wrote that a marriage can be long-lasting if the person accepts the changes it asks for, and Howard Sasportas described relationships that survive many crises and last for years. The U.S. divorce rate was 2.4 per 1,000 people in 2023 (provisional CDC figures from 45 reporting states and D.C.), and nobody has measured it by Pluto's house.

Does Pluto in the 7th house mean you will attract controlling partners?

With Pluto in the 7th house, modern astrologers make power the theme of the house, but they don't promise a controlling partner. Greene wrote that the force people meet through the partner is "not really the other" but something larger they see through that person. Sasportas added that people with this placement may try to control the partner themselves, out of fear of loss. If a relationship is abusive, that is a safety issue, not an astrology one, and the National Domestic Violence Hotline (1-800-799-7233) can help.

Can Pluto in the 7th house keep you in a relationship too long?

Howard Sasportas thought Pluto in the 7th house can do that. He wrote that in many cases he had seen, people with Pluto in the 7th had difficulty letting go of a relationship. In his account, the fear of losing a bond can make it hard to leave. Astrologers read that as the placement's hard side, and it's worth asking whether you stay out of love or out of fear of what ending would mean.

What does Pluto in the 7th house say about the person you'll marry?

Pluto in the 7th house says little about the person you'll marry. No source we read describes a spouse's looks or job from this placement, and those predictions have no evidence behind them. Modern astrologers describe the kind of bond instead: serious, transforming and tied up with questions of power. Sasportas also called the placement useful in the charts of lawyers, healers, counselors and psychologists, people whose own work is close one-to-one encounters, which is about you, not your spouse.
